Abstract

A platform (10) for supporting telephone network applications (11) includes Network Interface Units (NIU) (19) for interfacing between the telephone network (12) and the platform. A disk storage system (23) is included for storing voice messages to be sent over the network and voice messages received from the network. Voice messages are conveyed between the NIUs and the disk storage system by Voice Interface Modules (VIM) (25). The platform is installed on a general purpose digital computer and includes an Applications Interface Module (AIM) (15) responsive to an AIM command set comprising:
Send Voice Message; Delete Voice Message; Connect Call, Terminate Dialog, Collect Digits, Initiate Call; Terminate Call; Get Message Numbers, Get Voice Message;
Create Void Message, Pivot and Split Call. In response to Send Voice Message, a designated message stored on the disk system is sent to the network via the VIM. Send Voice Message has a. Receive Voice Message (105) option whereby a message is received from the network after the Send data is transmitted-and stored on disk. In response to Get Voice Message, the Receive data is copied to an application specified file. The platform initiates a call to the network in response to Initiate Call and an application is informed of an incoming call to the network by an Incoming Call Response from the AIM to the application.
DTMF
digits (124) entered during a call are returned to the application in response to Collect Digits or an AIM command which processes digits such as Send Voice Message. The digits are processed in accordance with Digit Rules (43) for collecting a predetermined number of digits or collecting digits until a digit in an application provided Delimiter List (45) in encountered. Transmission of voice messages is terminated in response to receipt of a digit in an application provided Break List. The ports (20) of the NIUs are connected;
disconnected and interconnected in. response to Connect Call, Terminate Call; Pivot Call and Split Call: Voice messages are deleted from the disk storage system in response to Delete Voice.
