Abstract

Abstract The present invention relates to a medullar nail having a plug-like insert arranged in the end region of the metal nail, said insert consisting of a readily drillable or screwable material and being suitable for receiving a corresponding attachment element such as a bone screw or a bone pin.

Description

TRANS LATION
ro~11 2 1 0 8 2 4 9 Medullar Nail The present invention relates to a medullar nail.
While it is no problem in the case of lower arm and femur nails to securely hold these nails in their associated bone sections by attachment screws which extend transverse to the longitudinal axis of the nail, in the case of a humerus - nail (DE 88 11 634 Ul), there is the danger that by drilling the required holes for the attachment screws, nerves may be injured so that a secure fixing in position of a humerus nail has not been possible up to now.
It is, therefore, the object of the present invention to provide a medullar nail with whicb it is possible to dispense with drilling through the cortex on both sides of the nail, i.e. the nail i6 fixed in position only on one side by an attachment pin or a corresponding screw driven into the cortex and the nail.
i This object of the invention is achieved in accordance with the invention by a plug-like insert which iR arranged in the end region of the metal nail and which is directed transverse to the longitudinal axis of the nail, said insert debouching towards the outside at least on one side of the nail and consisting of a material which can readily be ~;
drilled, or into which a screw can readily be screwed.
By this measure, it is now possible to drill through the cortex of the humerus only on one side and to introduce ~;~ through said hole a screw or a pin which at one end is held `~ LAWYERS' AND MERCHANTS' TRANSLATION BUREAU INC.

_ securely in the cortex but engages at the other end lnto the insert within the nail without protruding on the other side out of the nail. In this way, an injuring or damaging of the sensitive nerves on the other side is reliably excluded.
It is provided in accordance with the invention that the insert be arranged in one or more blind holes or in cylindrical holes which are cylindrical over a large part of - their length but then taper conically so that, upon the insertion of the material into said hole, no cavities can be created by inclusions of air or the like.
The insert can consist of plastic, but it can also advantageously be made of a material which is biodegradable, the period for such biological degradation being, of course, longer than is required for healing a fracture of the humerus so that the nail can be removed again in due time. By using the biodegradable material, the result is, however, achieved that splinters of material produced upon the drilling cannot lead to inflammations or the like.
one embodiment of the invention will be explained below with reference to the drawing.
~ The drawing shows a part of a nail 1 in the one end ;~; region of which there is provided an insert 2 which, in the .~- embodiment shown, is arranged in a cylindrical hole developed a~ blind hole. This insert consists of a biodegradable ~; material. After drilling through the cortex, a screw can now be screwed into said insert which in this end region of the 3~
