Abstract

2112887 9301918 PCTABS00019 Segmented guard bar wherein segments (70) of adjacent guard bars are tapered such that the skin flow through spaces between the segments is reduced. According to one preferred, illustrated embodiment, the distance between the rearward portion of adjacent segments (70) is less than the space between the forward portions of those segments. Though not limited to any specific type of razor, the present invention is particularly suited for use with a flexible razor head having a cap member (40), at least one and preferably two blades (50, 60) separated by a spacer (35), a blade seat (20) having a plurality of blade support portions (21) separated by corrugations (23), and a segmented guard bar with each segment (70) independently connected to the blade support portions (21).

Description

~ ~ 12~3'1 WO93/01918 PCT/~S92/0~6 SE~M~NTED G~ARD~BAR

The present invention is directed to a guard bar for a afety razor and, mor~ particularly, to a guard ~ar comprising a plurality of separate s~gm~nts at least one of which is designed to minimize the flo~ of skin through the space~ betwPen the segm~nts.

In recognition of the fact that ~urface~ being shaved ar~ not perfectly planar, a razor head comprising a cap, two blades s~parated by a spacer~ and a guard bar have been designed such that the entire razor head fl xes as a unit during shavîng. In order to maximize the fle~ibility of the blade ~eat, one design includes a guard ~r ormed of a plurality of discrete segments. Thes~
segm~nts are independently supported by the blade seat.
Adjacent se~ments of:the guard bar are thus separated by . spaces, This seqm~n~ed guard bar d~sign has prove~ very : ~uc¢ess~ul i~providing overall ~lexibility to the razor : h~ad without noticeable distortions to the blade geome~ry 20 : ~uri~g shavi~5- ~
~; The ~on~is~ent achieve~ent of a rlose, .
c~o~ortable sha~e~depends upon careful control of th~
blade geomet~y. To this end, the:pre~ent inv~ntion i5 directed to furth~r i~pro~emen~s in r~zor heads utili~ng eg~ented ~uard bars.

Those:skilled i~ the art appreciate that a guard bar, which is designed to be the fir~t ~lement of a safety razor to contact 'a given area during a shaving stroke, affects the manner in which the skin approaches the edg~
o~ the at blade. During a shaving stroke, skin typically flows over a guard bar and into th~ spare ; betw~en the ~uard bar and seat bla~e some distance below a tangent drawn from the top of the gu~rd b~r to khe blade e~ge~ The degree to which s~in may flow below such a ; : tangent linP depends upon the seat blade span, i.e. the distance between the guard bar and sea~ blade edge.

.

WO 93/~1918 ~ US92tO~46~

Though the spaces between segments of a segmented guard bar have been designed to minimize the amount of skin which is not actually contacted by the guard bar segments during a shaving stroke ~, varia~tioals in the skin flow may still result. The skin ~lowing through the spaces between the segments may contact the se~t ~lade edge at a different angle than the skin flowing over the guard bar segments. Additionally, when a ~lexible razor he~d having a segmented guard bar flexes in response to force~ encountered during shaving, the space between at least some o~ the segme~lts increases. This space irlcrease further increases l:he possibility of a non ~ unifor~ skin fl~w i~ediately forward of the ~orward hlade. A non-uni~orm skin fls~w ~ay advsrsely affect the com~ort of the shave.

It would therefore be desirable to pro~ide greater ~;kin f low con~rol te~ a ~egment:ed ~uard bar to ~urther ~inimize~and pref~ra~ly eli3~in~te po~ential : ~ 20 varlation~ in ~kin flow over a segmerlted guard bar and thereby proYide; :b~er con~rol of the blade geometr3r during sh~ving.

The skin flow con~rol ~nembe~rs o~ one illu~:trated embodiment are best understood with re~ere~ce to Figures 1-5. As illustrated, blade seat 20 is 21~ 37 WO93/01918 PCT/~S~2/0~6-integrally formed with a plurality of blade supports 21 sep~rated by corrugations 23 and ha~ing holes 25 adapted to receive locking pins of cap me~ber 4~. The guard bar segments 70 are individually suppQrted by~blade supports 21 via connectors 27, with the exception~of 0nd segments 71 which are integrally formed with the sidewalls of blade seat 20 and attachment members 30.

Greater skin flow control is provided to the segmented guard~bar by this embodiment o~ th~ ~resent in~ention by providing at least one of the guard bar segm~nts 70 with a tapered portion 71 and by reducing the space between adjac~nt s~gments 70. The tapered portion : in the illustrated embodiment is advantageously form~d to provide a smaller space between the rearward portion of : th~ guard bar segments than the respectiYe forward ;: ~ port:ian ~ According to th~ illustrated embodimen~, each segm~nt 70: is preferably tapered bo~h laterally and ~ r arw~rdly thereby providing a s~ooth transition between : 20 :; th~ forward and:rearward portions~c~ ~djacent guard bar seg~ents.
