Abstract

A seal assembly (100) for reception of an elongated surgical instrument (110) is provided which includes housing components (114, 116) having at least one opening configured, dimensioned to permit entry of an elongated surgical instrument (110), and defining a central longitudinal axis. The seal assembly (100) further comprises a seal member (118) formed of a resilient material and defining an aperture therein, the aperture being configured and dimensioned such that insertion of the surgical instrument (110) into the aperture causes the resilient material defining the aperture to resiliently contact the outer surface of the surgical instrument (110) in a substantially fluid tight manner; and a fabric layer (128) juxtaposed relative to the resilient material. A coating (418) may be applied to seal member (118) to reduce friction between seal member (118) and surgical instrumentation (110) inserted therein. The coating (418) is preferably a hydro-cyclo-siloxane membrane deposited by plasma polymerization process.
