Abstract

A device for folding a balloon of a balloon catheter during balloon deflation includes a band and a plurality of elongated fingers that are attached to the band. The band is formed with a tab and a notch and the length of the band corresponds to the diameter of the catheter tube. The band is folded into an annulus to interlock the tab with the notch. The annulus is attached to the catheter tube of the balloon catheter with the fingers extending over the balloon in a substantially same axial direction. In operation, the fingers are moveable between an unstressed configuration, when the balloon is deflated, and a stressed configuration, when the balloon is inflated. In a stressed configuration, the fingers urge against the balloon and are biased toward the stressed configuration to return to an unstressed configuration.

Claims (20)

1. A device for folding a balloon of a balloon catheter onto a catheter tube during balloon deflation which comprises:
a band formed with a notch;
a plurality of elongated fingers attached to said band;
a tab attached to said band for engagement with said notch to configure said band as an annulus, said annulus being centered on an axis with said fingers extending therefrom in a substantially same axial direction; and a means for mounting said annulus onto said catheter tube to position said fingers over said balloon to fold said balloon onto said catheter tube during deflation of said balloon.
2. A device as recited in claim 1 wherein each said elongated finger has a first end and a second end, with said first end being attached to said band and said second end being rounded.
3. A device as recited in claim 1 wherein said device is made of stainless steel.
4. A device as recited in claim 1 wherein said balloon has a proximal end and a distal end and said device is mounted on said catheter tube proximal to said balloon with said fingers extending in a distal direction over said balloon.
5. A device as recited in claim 1 wherein said balloon has a proximal end and a distal end and said device is mounted on said catheter tube distal to said balloon with said fingers extending in a proximal direction over said balloon.
6. A device as recited in claim 1 wherein said plurality of fingers are moveable by said balloon between a first configuration, when said balloon is deflated, and a second configuration, when said balloon is inflated.
7. A device as recited in claim 6 wherein said plurality of fingers are stressed when said device is in said second configuration to urge against said balloon, and said fingers are biased in said second configuration to return said device to said first configuration.
8. A device as recited in claim 6 wherein each said finger is substantially unstressed and is inclined at an angle from said band toward said axis when said fingers are in said first configuration.
9. A device as recited in claim 8 wherein said angle is in a range from approximately five degrees to approximately fifteen degrees (5°-15°).
10. A folding device which comprises:
a fluid source;
a catheter tube defining an axis and having a first end and a second end, said second end of said catheter tube being connected to said fluid source;
a balloon mounted at said first end of said catheter tube in fluid communication with said fluid source for inflation and deflation of said balloon;
an annulus mounted on said catheter tube and centered on said axis; and a plurality of elongated fingers attached to said annulus and extending therefrom to position said plurality of fingers over said balloon to fold said balloon onto said catheter tube during deflation of said balloon.
11. A folding device as recited in claim 10 wherein each said elongated finger has a first end and a second end, said first end being attached to said annulus and said second end being rounded.
12. A folding device as recited in claim 10 wherein said annulus comprises a band having a tab and a notch, said tab interlocks with said notch to form said annulus.
13. A folding device as recited in claim 10 wherein said plurality of fingers extend from said annulus over said balloon in a substantially same direction toward said axis.
14. A folding device as recited in claim 10 wherein said plurality of fingers are moveable between an unstressed configuration, when said balloon is deflated and a stressed configuration, when said balloon is inflated.
15. A folding device as recited in claim 14 wherein said plurality of fingers move from said stressed configuration to said unstressed configuration to fold said balloon onto said catheter tube during deflation of said balloon.
16. A folding device as recited in claim 10 wherein said annulus and said plurality of fingers are made of stainless steel.
17. A folding device as recited in claim 10 wherein there are at least three said fingers.
18. A method for manufacturing a device useful for folding a balloon of a balloon catheter onto a catheter tube during balloon deflation, said method comprising the steps of:
providing a sheet of stainless steel;
stamping out at least one said device from said sheet, said device including a plurality of elongated fingers attached to a band with said band having a tab and a notch;
folding said band for engagement of said tab with said notch to configure said band as an annulus;
heat treating said fingers to establish a spring therewith; and mounting said band onto said catheter tube to position said fingers over said balloon to urge said fingers against said balloon to fold said balloon during deflation.
19. A method as recited in claim 18 wherein the mounting step is accomplished with a bonding solvent.
20. A method as recited in claim 18 wherein each said elongated finger has a rounded tip.
