Abstract
A method in a communication system wherein a user (1) is arranged to register with a control entity (22) comprises sending a message from the communication system to the user (1) requesting that the user re-register with said communication network. The user is caused to re-register with said network in response to said message.
Claims (34)
1. A method in a communication system wherein a user is arranged to register With a control entity, said method comprising the steps of:
sending a message from the communication system to the user requesting that the user re-register with said communication network; and causing said user to re-register with said network in response to said message wherein said user is re-authenticated when said user is re-registered.
sending a message from the communication system to the user requesting that the user re-register with said communication network; and causing said user to re-register with said network in response to said message wherein said user is re-authenticated when said user is re-registered.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said control entity is arranged to send said message.
3. A method as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein said message is sent in response to the occurrence of one or more specified conditions.
4. A method as claimed in claim 3, wherein said specified conditions comprise one or more of the following conditions:
a current registration of the user will expire in a predetermined time; one or more error conditions in the system; one or more error conditions in the control entity; and the system mistrusts the user.

5. A method as claimed in claim 4, wherein control entity error conditions comprise one or more of the following conditions:
congestion in said system; overloading in said system.

6. A method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the user is sent said message only if the user subscribes to a service providing said message.
7. A method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the message is sent to the user from the control entity via an intermediate control entity.
8. A method as claimed in claim 7, wherein said intermediate control entity is a proxy call state control function.
9. A method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein said control entity comprises a serving call state control function.
10. A method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein said user is arranged to send a request for re-registration in response to said message.
11. A method in a communication system wherein a user is arranged to register with a control entity, said method comprising the steps of:
sending a message from the communication system to the user requesting that the user initiate a procedure with said communication network, said procedure causing re-authentication of said user;
causing said user to initiate said procedure in response to said message; and re-authenticating said user.

12. A method as claimed in claim 11, wherein said control entity is arranged to send said message.
13. A method as claimed in claim 11 or 12, wherein said message is sent in response to the occurrence of one or more specified conditions.
14. A method as claimed in claim 13, wherein said specified conditions comprise one or more of the following conditions:
a current registration of the user will expire in a predetermined time; one or more error conditions in the system; one or more error conditions in the control entity; and the system mistrusts the user.

15. A method as claimed in claim 14, wherein control entity error conditions comprise one or more of the following conditions:
congestion in said system; overloading in said system.

1,6: A method as claimed in any of claims 11 to 15, wherein the user is sent said message only if the user subscribes to a service providing said message.
17. A method as claimed in any of claims 11 to 16, wherein the message is sent to the user from the control entity via an intermediate control entity.
18. A method as claimed in claim 17, wherein said intermediate control entity is a proxy call state control function.
19. A method as claimed in any of claims 11 to 18, wherein said control entity comprises a serving call state control function.
20. A method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein said communication system is a third generation communications network.
21. A method as claimed in claim 20, wherein said message is a session initiation protocol NOTIFY message.
22. A communication system comprising at least one user and a control entity, the user being arranged to be registered with a control entity in use, said communication being arranged to send a message from the communication system to the user requesting that the user re-register with said communication network, said user being arranged to re-register with said network in response to said message; wherein said user is re-authenticated when said user is re-registered.
23. A communication system as claimed in claim 22, wherein the user comprises a mobile user equipment.
24. A system as claimed in claim 22 or 23, wherein said control entity is arranged to send said message.
25. A system as claimed in claim 22, 23 or 24, wherein said message is sent in response to the occurrence of one or more specified conditions.
26. A system as claimed in claim 25, wherein said specified conditions comprise one or more of the following conditions:
a current registration of the user will expire in a predetermined time; one or more error conditions in the system; one or more error conditions in the control entity; and the system mistrusts the user.

27. A system as claimed in claim 26, wherein control entity error conditions comprise one or more of the following conditions:
congestion in said system; overloading in said system.

28. A system as claimed in any of claims 22 to 27, wherein the user is sent said message only if the user subscribes to a service providing said message.
29. A system as claimed in any of claims 22 to 28, wherein the message is sent to the user from the control entity via an intermediate control entity.
30. A system as claimed in claim 29, wherein said intermediate control entity is a proxy call state control function.
31. A system as claimed in any of claims 22 to 30, wherein said control entity comprises a serving call state control function.
32. A system as claimed in any of claims 22 to 31, wherein said user is arranged to send a request for re-registration in response to said message.
33. A system as claimed in any of claims 22 to 32, wherein said communication system is a third generation network.
34. A system as claimed in claim 33, wherein said message is a session initiation protocol SIP NOTIFY message.
