Abstract

An air cleaner arrangement or assembly is provided. The air cleaner arrangement includes a serviceable filter cartridge. The air cleaner assembly also includes an arrangement for positioning the filter cartridge into a preferred, sealing, orientation and for securing the filter cartridge in that location. Preferred serviceable filter cartridges are provided, as well as methods of assembly and use.

Claims (33)

1. An air cleaner arrangement including:
(a) a housing having an inlet end and an opposite outlet end;
(i) the housing having a sidewall in extension between the inlet end and the outlet end and defining a top, a bottom and opposite sides;
(ii) the housing sidewall including an access cover removable from a remainder of the housing; and (b) a filter cartridge comprising:
(i) a z-filter media construction comprising a fluted sheet secured to a facing sheet, and having opposite inlet and outlet flow faces;
(ii) a sheath positioned surrounding the z-filter media construction;
(iii) a seal arrangement comprising a rubber like material positioned to axially seal the filter cartridge inside the housing;
(iv) a projection arrangement including projections extending outwardly from opposite sides of the sheath;
(v) the filter cartridge being sized to be positioned in, and to be removed from, an interior of the housing by passage through the housing sidewall when the access cover is removed; and (c) the filter cartridge being positioned inside of the housing with:
(i) the seal arrangement axially sealed to the housing; and (ii) a portion of the air cleaner arrangement in engagement with the projections on the sheath and thereby axially driving the filter cartridge and axially sealing the seal arrangement against the housing.
2. An air cleaner arrangement according to claim 1 wherein:
(a) the top of the housing includes the access cover;
(b) the z-filter media construction is coiled;

(c) the sheath is an impermeable, one-piece, plastic sheath;
(d) the projection arrangement is integral with the one-piece plastic sheath;
(e) the seal arrangement is axially sealed to the housing with the rubber-like material compressed in thickness; and (f) the seal arrangement is axially sealed against the housing by compression of the seal arrangement.
3. An air cleaner arrangement according to claim 2 wherein:
(a) the facing sheet is non-corrugated.
4. An air cleaner arrangement according to any one of claims 2 and 3 wherein:
(a) the seal arrangement comprises polyurethane.
5. An air cleaner arrangement according to claim 4 wherein:
(a) the seal arrangement comprises polyurethane foam.
6. An air cleaner arrangement according to any one of claims 2-5 wherein:
(a) the rubber like material is compressed at least 0.5 mm.
7. An air cleaner arrangement according to any one of claims 2-6 wherein:
(a) the rubber like material is compressed at least 0.75 mm.
8. An air cleaner arrangement according to any one of claims 2-7 wherein:
(a) the rubber like material is compressed between a portion of the sheath and a portion of the housing.
9. An air cleaner arrangement according to any one of claims 2-8 wherein:
(a) the housing access cover includes projections thereon positioned in engagement with the filter cartridge, to help secure the sheath in position.
10. An air cleaner arrangement according to any one of claims 2-9 including:

(a) a central support, inside the housing, in engagement with the filter cartridge.
11. An air cleaner arrangement according to any one of claims 2-10 wherein:
(a) the portion of the air cleaner in engagement with the projections on the sheath comprises a biasing and lock mechanism including:
(i) a slider construction having at least one slide mounted in the housing and biased against the projection arrangement.
12. An air cleaner arrangement according to claim 11 wherein:
(a) the slider construction includes two slides mounted on the housing on opposite sides of the filter cartridge, each of the two slides being biased against the projection arrangement.
13. An air cleaner arrangement according to claim 12 wherein:
(a) the biasing and lock arrangement comprises an actuator construction including an operator arm, opposite control arms and a pair of biasing members;
(i) the biasing arrangement being such that the operator handle is in a lowered position and the slides are biased by the biasing members to drive the cartridge into axial sealing engagement with the housing; and, (ii) the operator handle being positionable in a raised position when the access cover is removed, to release the cartridge from the axial sealing engagement with the housing.
14. An air cleaner arrangement according to any one of claims 2-13 wherein:
(a) the filter cartridge is axially driven inside of the housing without filter cartridge rotation.
15. A method of installing a filter cartridge into an air cleaner housing; the method including steps of:
(a) providing a filter cartridge comprising:

(i) a z-filter media construction comprising a fluted sheet secured to a facing sheet, and having opposite inlet and outlet flow faces;
(ii) a sheath positioned surrounding the z-filter media construction;
(iii) a seal arrangement comprising a rubber like material positioned to axially seal the filter cartridge inside of the housing;
(iv) a projection arrangement including projections extending outwardly from opposite sides of the sheath;
(b) providing an air cleaner housing with: first and second, opposite, ends; and a sidewall defining a top, a bottom and opposite sides; the housing sidewall including an access cover removable from a remainder of the housing;
(c) removing the access cover;
(d) inserting the filter cartridge through an access opening generated by removal of the access cover; the step of inserting including directing the projections extending outwardly from opposite sides of the sheath respectively toward the opposite sides of the housing; and (e) sealing the filter cartridge in position and closing the housing by positioning the access cover in place; the step of sealing including:
(i) engaging the projections extending outwardly from opposite sides of the sheath with structure inside of the housing and biasing the filter cartridge against an end of the housing with the seal arrangement providing an axial seal between the filter cartridge and the housing; and (ii) retaining biasing engagement between the housing and the filter cartridge, while the access cover is in position on the housing.
16. A method according to claim 15 wherein:
(a) the step of providing a filter cartridge includes providing:

(i) a z-filter media construction comprising a fluted sheet secured to a facing sheet and being coiled;
(ii) a sheath positioned surrounding the z-filter media construction and being an impermeable one-piece plastic sheath;
(iii) a projection arrangement including projections extending outwardly from opposite sides of the sheath; wherein the projection arrangement is integral with the one-piece plastic sheath;
(b) the step of providing an air cleaner housing includes providing an air cleaner housing with: a sidewall and first and second, opposite, ends;
and a sidewall defining a top, a bottom and opposite sides; the housing sidewall including an access cover removable from a remainder of the housing; wherein the housing top includes the access cover; and (c) the step of retaining biasing engagement between the housing and the filter cartridge, while the access cover is in position on the housing includes retaining biasing engagement between the housing and the filter cartridge, while the access cover is in position on a top of the housing.
17. The method according to claim 16 wherein:
(a) the step of sealing includes compressing the seal arrangement in thickness.
18. The method according to any one of claims 16 and 17 wherein:
(a) the step of sealing includes compressing the seal arrangement at least 0.5mm.
19. The method according to any one of claims 16-18 wherein:
(a) the step of closing includes a step of engaging the filter cartridge with projections on the access cover, to help secure the sheath in position.
20. The method according to any one of claims 16-19 wherein:
(a) the step of sealing comprises sliding the filter cartridge within the housing, without rotating the filter cartridge.
21. The method according to any one of claims 16-20 wherein:
(a) the step of providing a filter cartridge includes providing a z-filter media construction wherein the facing sheet is non-corrugated.
22. An air filter cartridge comprising:
(a) z-filter media coiled in a rectangular configuration having four rounded corners;
(b) an impermeable sheath construction positioned around the z-filter media providing end openings for air flow into and out of the z-filter media; and (c) a first seal member at an end of the sheath construction;
(i) the first seal member being a radial seal having a rectangular configuration with four rounded corners.
23. An air filter cartridge according to claim 22 including:
(a) a second seal member at an end of the sheath construction opposite the end on which the first seal member is positioned.
24. An air filter cartridge according to any one of claims 22 and 23 wherein:
(a) the first seal member is an outside radial seal member.
25. An air filter cartridge according to any one of claims 22 and 23 wherein:
(a) the first seal member is an inside radial seal member.
26. An air filter cartridge according to any one of claims 22-25 including:
(a) a mounting projection arrangement on the impermeable sheath construction with projections extending outwardly from opposite sides of the filter cartridge and at a location spaced from the first seal member.
27. An air filter cartridge comprising:
(a) z-filter media having an inlet end and an outlet end;
(b) an impermeable sheath construction positioned around the z-filter media and providing end openings for air flow into and out of the sheath construction;
(c) a first seal member positioned at an end of the sheath construction;
and, (d) a mounting projection arrangement on the impermeable sheath construction at a location spaced from the first seal member and toward an opposite end of the sheath construction.
28. An air filter cartridge according to claim 27 wherein:
(a) the mounting projection arrangement includes:
(i) at least a first projection on a first side of the sheath construction; and, (ii) at least a second projection on an opposite side of the sheath construction from the first projection.
29. An air filter cartridge according to claim 28 including:
(a) two mounting projections on a first side of the sheath construction;
and, (b) two mounting projections on a second side of the sheath construction.
30. An air filter cartridge according to any one of claims 27-29 including:
(a) a second seal member at an opposite end of the sheath construction from the first seal member.
31. An air filter cartridge according to any one of claims 27-30 wherein:
(a) the z-filter media comprises a coiled strip of media.
32. An air cleaner arrangement comprising:

(a) a housing having a straight through flow construction with an outlet end and an opposite inlet end;
(b) an air filter cartridge according to one of claims 22-31 positioned within the housing; and (c) a biasing arrangement operable to selectively bias the first seal member of the air filter cartridge toward the housing outlet end;
(i) the biasing arrangement including at least one slide mounted to the housing and positioned to engage a mounting arrangement on the air filter cartridge.
33. A method of installing a filter cartridge according to one of claims 22-31 into a housing to form the air cleaner arrangement of claim 28, said method including a step of:
(a) biasing the first slide member engaging the mounting projection arrangement, to move the filter cartridge toward the outlet end of the housing.
