Abstract
Alternative designs, materials and manufacturing methods for guidewires. Some embodiments pertain to a composite guidewire having proximal and distal section, and a connector adapted and configured for permanently joining the proximal section to the distal section. In some embodiments, at least one of the sections is made of a linear-elastic nickel-titanium alloy. Several alternative guidewire tip constructions and/or designs including methods and techniques of construction are also disclosed.
Claims (33)
1. A guidewire comprising:
an elongated shaft including a proximal section and a distal section;
a tubular attachment member disposed about a portion of the shaft; and a coil member disposed over at least a portion of the shaft, the coil member being connected to the tubular attachment member.

a tubular attachment member disposed about a portion of the shaft; and a coil member disposed over at least a portion of the shaft, the coil member being connected to the tubular attachment member.
2. The guidewire of claim 1, wherein the coil member is disposed over at least a portion of the distal section of the shaft.
3. The guidewire of claim 1 or 2, wherein the elongated shaft includes an elongated core member including a proximal section and a distal section, the tubular attachment member is disposed about a portion of and connected to the core member;
and the coil member is disposed over at least a portion of the core member and a least a portion of the attachment member.

4. A guidewire comprising:
an elongated shaft including a proximal section and a distal section;
a coil member defining a lumen, at least a portion of the coil member being disposed over at least a portion of the shaft such that the portion of the shaft extends within the lumen, the coil member being connected to the shaft at a first location along the length of the shaft; and means for attaching the coil member to the shaft at a second location along the length of the shaft and for maintaining the axial and lateral position of the coil relative to the shaft.

a coil member defining a lumen, at least a portion of the coil member being disposed over at least a portion of the shaft such that the portion of the shaft extends within the lumen, the coil member being connected to the shaft at a first location along the length of the shaft; and means for attaching the coil member to the shaft at a second location along the length of the shaft and for maintaining the axial and lateral position of the coil relative to the shaft.
5. The guidewire of claim 4, wherein the means for attaching includes a tubular attachment member.
6. The guidewire of any of claims 1-2, or 5, wherein the tubular attachment member is connected to the elongated shaft.
7. The guidewire of any of claims 1-2, or 5, wherein the coil member is disposed about at least a portion of the tubular attachment member.
8. The guidewire of any of claims 1-3 or 5-7, wherein the tubular attachment member includes a portion that defines an outer diameter, and the coil member includes a portion that defines an inner diameter that is substantially the same as the outer diameter of the tubular attachment member.
9. The guidewire any of claims 1-8, wherein the coil member comprises MP35N.
10. The guidewire of any of claims 1-3 or 5-9, further including an elongated shaping structure, and a portion of the shaping structure disposed between the shaft and the tubular attachment member.
11. The guidewire of claim 10, wherein the portion of the shaping structure is attached to the shaft and to the tubular attachment member.
12. The guidewire of clann 10 or 11, wherein the shaping structure is a shaping ribbon that includes a distal portion that extends distally beyond the distal section of the shaft.
13. The guidewire of any of claims 1-3 or 5-12, wherein the tubular attachment member is connected to the elongated shaft using a first attachment technique, and the coil member is connected to the tubular attachment member using a second attachment technique different from the first attachment technique.
14. The guidewire of any of claims 1-3 or 5-12, wherein the tubular attachment member is connected to the shaft using an attachment technique employing LASER energy.
15. The guidewire of any of claims 1-3 or 5-12, wherein the tubular attachment member is connected to the shaft using a LASER diode soldering technique.
16. The guidewire of any of claims 1-3 or 5-12, wherein the coil member is connected to the tubular attachment member using an attachment technique employing LASER energy.
17. The guidewire of any of claims 1-3 or 5-12, wherein, wherein the coil member is connected to tubular attachment member using a LASER welding technique.
18. A method of making the guidewire of any of claims 1-3 or 5-17, the method comprising:
providing the elongated shaft including the proximal section and the distal section;
disposing the tubular attachment member about the portion of the shaft;
disposing a coil member about at least a portion of the shaft and at least a portion of the tubular attachment member; and attaching the coil member to the tubular attachment member.

disposing the tubular attachment member about the portion of the shaft;
disposing a coil member about at least a portion of the shaft and at least a portion of the tubular attachment member; and attaching the coil member to the tubular attachment member.
19. The method of claim 18, wherein the tubular attachment member is connected to the elongated shaft first, and thereafter, the coil member is disposed about at least a portion of the shaft and at least a portion of the tubular attachment member and attached to the tubular attachment member.
20. The method of claim 18, further including:
disposing an elongated shaping structure between the shaft and the tubular attachment member; and attaching the elongated shaping structure to the shaft and to the tubular attachment member.

21. A method of making the guidewire of claims 4, the method comprising:
providing the elongated shaft including the proximal section and the distal section;
disposing at least a portion of the coil member over at least a portion of the shaft such that the portion of the shaft extends within the lumen;
connecting the coil member to the shaft at a first location along the length of the shaft; and providing means for attaching the coil member to the shaft at the second location along the length of the shaft and for maintaining the axial and lateral position of the coil relative to the shaft.

disposing at least a portion of the coil member over at least a portion of the shaft such that the portion of the shaft extends within the lumen;
connecting the coil member to the shaft at a first location along the length of the shaft; and providing means for attaching the coil member to the shaft at the second location along the length of the shaft and for maintaining the axial and lateral position of the coil relative to the shaft.
22. A medical device comprising:
an elongated shaft having a length;
a coil member defining a lumen, at least a portion of the coil member being disposed over at least a portion of the shaft such that the portion of the shaft extends within the lumen, the coil member being connected to the shaft at a first location along the length of the shaft; and a tubular attachment member disposed within the lumen of the coil and disposed about the elongate shaft at a second location along the length of the shaft, the second location being spaced from the first location, the tubular attachment member being connected to the shaft, and the coil being connected to the tubular attachment member.

a coil member defining a lumen, at least a portion of the coil member being disposed over at least a portion of the shaft such that the portion of the shaft extends within the lumen, the coil member being connected to the shaft at a first location along the length of the shaft; and a tubular attachment member disposed within the lumen of the coil and disposed about the elongate shaft at a second location along the length of the shaft, the second location being spaced from the first location, the tubular attachment member being connected to the shaft, and the coil being connected to the tubular attachment member.
23. The medical device of claim 22, wherein the first location is located at a position more proximal than the second location along the length of the shaft.
24. The medical device of claim 22 or 23, wherein the coil member includes a length and includes a proximal end and a distal end; and wherein the proximal end of the coil member is connected to the shaft at the first location along the length of the shaft.
25. The medical device of claim 22, 23, or 24, wherein the coil member comprises MP35N.
26. The medical device of any of claims 22-25, further including an elongated shaping structure, and a portion of the shaping structure is disposed between and connected to the shaft and the tubular attachment member.
27. The medical device of claim 26, wherein the shaft includes a distal end, and the shaping structure is a shaping ribbon that includes a distal portion that extends distally beyond the distal end of the shaft.
28. The medical device of any of claims 22-27, wherein the tubular attachment member is connected to the elongated shaft using a first attachment technique, and the coil member is connected to the tubular attachment member using a second attachment technique different from the first attachment technique.
29. The medical device of any of claims 22-28, wherein the tubular attachment member is connected to the shaft using an attachment technique employing LASER energy.
30. The medical device of any of claims 22-29, wherein the tubular attachment member is connected to the shaft using a LASER diode soldering technique.
31. The medical device of any of claims 22-30, wherein the coil member is connected to the tubular attachment member using an attachment technique employing LASER energy.
32. The medical device of any of claims 22-31, wherein the coil member is connected to tubular attachment member using a LASER welding technique.
33. A method of malting the medical device of any of claims 22-32, the method comprising:
providing the elongated shaft;
disposing at least the portion of the coil member over at least the portion of the shaft such that the portion of the shaft extends within the lumen;
connecting the coil member to the shaft at the first location along the length of the shaft;
disposing the tubular attachment member within the lumen of the coil and about the elongate shaft at the second location along the length of the shaft, the second location being spaced from the first location;
connecting the tubular attachment member to the shaft; and connecting the coil to the tubular attachment member.
providing the elongated shaft;
disposing at least the portion of the coil member over at least the portion of the shaft such that the portion of the shaft extends within the lumen;
connecting the coil member to the shaft at the first location along the length of the shaft;
disposing the tubular attachment member within the lumen of the coil and about the elongate shaft at the second location along the length of the shaft, the second location being spaced from the first location;
connecting the tubular attachment member to the shaft; and connecting the coil to the tubular attachment member.
