Abstract
An apparatus and method for recording and/or reproducing data on a disc using padding information, and a corresponding information storage medium. The recording method includes recording a recording unit block in which invalid data is padded in part of the block and recording padding information indicating that the invalid data is included. According to the method, a disc drive becomes able to distinguish valid data from invalid data in an error correction block such that reliability of reproduction increases and stability of the system is improved.
Claims (58)
1. A recording method, comprising:
recording a recording unit block where invalid data is padded in part of the block;
and recording padding information indicating that the invalid data is included.
recording a recording unit block where invalid data is padded in part of the block;
and recording padding information indicating that the invalid data is included.
2. The recording method of claim 1, wherein the padding information is recorded corresponding to at least one recording unit block.
3. The recording method of claim 1, wherein the padding information is recorded corresponding to at least one reproducing unit block.
4. The recording method of claim 1, wherein the padding information is recorded in the recording unit block.
5. The recording method of claim 2, wherein the recording of the padding information comprises recording information indicating whether there is padded data in at least one recording unit block corresponding to the padding information.
6. The recording method of claim 2, wherein the recording of the padding information comprises recording information indicating the location of the padded data in at least one recording unit block corresponding to the padding information.
7. The recording method of claim 2, wherein the recording of the padding information comprises recording information indicating a value the data padded in at least one recording unit block corresponding to the padding information.
8. The recording method of claim 1, wherein the recording unit block is an error correction block of a predetermined size.
9. A reproducing method, comprising:
reading out at least one recording unit block wherein valid data is included in part of the recording unit block and invalid data is padded in a remaining part of the recording unit block; and obtaining the valid data based on padding information corresponding to the padded invalid data.

10. The reproducing method of claim 9, wherein the recording unit block is an error correction block.
11. The reproducing method of claim 9, wherein the obtaining the valid data comprises reading out the padding information, recorded to correspond to at least one reproducing unit block, from an information storage medium.
12. The reproducing method of claim 9, wherein the obtaining the valid data comprises reading out the padding information recorded in the recording unit block.
13. The reproducing method of claim 10, wherein the obtaining the valid data comprises determining from the padding information whether the invalid padded data is in at least one recording unit block or reproducing unit block corresponding to the padding information, and if there is the invalid padded data, obtaining the valid data excluding the invalid padded data.
14. The reproducing method of claim 10, wherein the obtaining the valid data comprises finding from the padding information, a location of the invalid padded data in at least one recording unit block or reproducing unit block corresponding to the padding information, and obtaining the valid data excluding the invalid padded data.
15. The reproducing method of claim 10, wherein a location of the invalid padded data is used to find a location of data last recorded on a disc.
16. The reproducing method of claim 10, wherein the obtaining the valid data comprises finding from the padding information a value of the invalid padded data in at least one recording unit block or reproducing unit block corresponding to the padding information, and obtaining the valid data excluding the invalid padded data.
17. A recording apparatus, comprising:
a pickup unit which records data on a disc; and a control unit which controls the pickup unit to record the data in a recording unit block where invalid data is padded in part of the recording unit block, and to record padding information indicating that the invalid data is included in the recording unit block.

18. The recording apparatus of claim 17, wherein the control unit records the padding information corresponding to at least one recording unit block.
19. The recording apparatus of claim 17, wherein the control unit records the padding information corresponding to at least one reproducing unit block.
20. The recording apparatus of claim 17, wherein the control unit records the padding information in the recording unit block.
21. The recording apparatus of claim 17, wherein the control unit records information indicating whether the padded invalid data is in at least one recording unit block or reproducing unit block corresponding to the information, as the padding information.
22. The recording apparatus of claim 21, wherein the control unit records information indicating a location of the padded invalid data in at least one recording unit block or reproducing unit block corresponding to the information, as the padding information.
23. The recording apparatus of claim 17, wherein the control unit records information indicating a value of the padded invalid data in at least one recording unit block or reproducing unit block corresponding to the padding information, as the padding information.
24. A reproducing apparatus, comprising:
a pickup unit which reads from an information storage medium at least one recording unit block where valid data is included in part of the recording unit block and invalid data is padded in a remaining part of the recording unit block; and a control unit which obtains the valid data based on the padding information.

25. The reproducing apparatus of claim 24, wherein the pickup unit reads the padding information from the information storage medium which is recorded so that the padding information corresponds to at least one reproducing unit block.
26. The reproducing apparatus of claim 24, wherein the pickup unit reads the padding information recorded in the recording unit block from the information storage medium.
27. The reproducing apparatus of claim 24, wherein the control unit determines from the padding information whether there is data padded in at least one recording unit block or reproducing unit block corresponding to the padding information, and if there is padded data, obtains the valid data excluding the padded data.
28. An information storage medium for use with a recording and/or reproducing apparatus, comprising:
a recording unit block where valid data is included in part of the recording unit block and invalid data is padded in a remaining part of the recording unit block; and padding information indicating that the invalid data is included.

29. The information storage medium of claim 28, wherein the padding information is recorded corresponding to at least one recording unit block.
30. The information storage medium of claim 28, wherein the padding information is recorded corresponding to at least one reproducing unit block.
31. The information storage medium of claim 28, wherein the padding information is recorded in the recording unit block.
32. The information storage medium of claim 29, wherein the padding information includes information indicating whether there is the invalid data padded in at least one recording unit block corresponding to the padding information.
33. The information storage medium of claim 32, wherein the padding information further comprises:
at least one of information indicating a location of the padded invalid data and information indicating a value of the padded invalid data.

34. The information storage medium of claim 33, wherein the information indicating the location of the padded invalid data is used to find a second location of the valid data last recorded on the information storage medium.
35. The recording method of claim 6, wherein the information indicating the location of the padded data is used to find a last location of the valid data last recorded on the information storage medium.
36. The recording apparatus of claim 22, wherein the information indicating the location of the padded data is used to find a last location of the valid data last recorded on the information storage medium.
37. The reproducing apparatus of claim 24, wherein information indicating a location of the padded invalid data is obtained from the padding information.
38. The reproducing apparatus of claim 37, wherein the information indicating the location of the padded invalid data is used to find a last location of the valid data last recorded on the disk.
39. A method of managing recording and/or reproducing of valid data stored on an information storage medium in unit blocks of a predetermined size, comprising:
storing padding information with a portion of the valid data to form the unit blocks of the predetermined size during a recording of the valid data on the information storage medium.

40. The method of claim 39, wherein the storing of the padding information comprises storing the padding information with each unit block.
41. The method of claim 39, wherein the storing of the padding information comprises storing the padding information with each of a corresponding group of the unit blocks.
42. The method of claim 39, wherein the storing of the padding information comprises storing the padding information with every two of the unit blocks.
43. The method of claim 39, further comprising:
encoding error correction data according to the valid data.
encoding error correction data according to the valid data.
44. The method of claim 43, wherein the storing of the padding information is stored before the encoding of the error correction data.
45. The method of claim 43, wherein the storing of the padding information is stored after the encoding of the error correction data.
46. The method of claim 39, further comprising:
indicating a presence of the padding information corresponding to each one of the unit blocks.
indicating a presence of the padding information corresponding to each one of the unit blocks.
47. The method of claim 39, further comprising:
reproducing the valid data from the information storage medium according to the padding information stored with the valid data.

48. The method of claim 47, wherein at least one of the unit blocks of the valid data comprises an error correction block.
49. A method of managing recording and/or reproducing of valid data stored on an information storage medium in unit blocks of a predetermined size, comprising receiving a command to record data of a first size on the information storage medium;
dividing the data of the first size into a whole number of recording unit blocks of a second size and storing the divided data on the information storage medium in successive recording unit blocks;
forming a remainder portion of the data which does not equal the second size of one of the recording unit blocks; and storing padding information with the remainder portion of the data to form a complete recording unit block of the second size comprising a portion of the data and the padding information on an information storage medium.

50. The method of claim 49, further comprising:
reproducing the data from the information storage medium according to reproducing unit blocks.

51. The method of claim 50, wherein the reproducing unit block corresponds to at least one recording unit block.
52. The method of claim 51, wherein when the reproducing unit block comprises the padding information only the remainder portion of the data is reproduced based on the padding information.
53. A recording and/or reproducing apparatus, comprising:
an optical pickup which records data on and/or reads the data from a surface of an information storage medium; and a controller which controls the optical pickup to record and/or reproduce the data on the surface of the information storage medium in unit blocks of a predetermined size, wherein the controller stores padding information with a remainder portion of the data, which is smaller than the unit blocks of the predetermined size, to form the unit blocks of the predetermined size during the recording of the data on the information storage medium, and reproduces the data from the information storage medium in the unit blocks of the predetermined size according to the padding information stored with the data.
an optical pickup which records data on and/or reads the data from a surface of an information storage medium; and a controller which controls the optical pickup to record and/or reproduce the data on the surface of the information storage medium in unit blocks of a predetermined size, wherein the controller stores padding information with a remainder portion of the data, which is smaller than the unit blocks of the predetermined size, to form the unit blocks of the predetermined size during the recording of the data on the information storage medium, and reproduces the data from the information storage medium in the unit blocks of the predetermined size according to the padding information stored with the data.
54. The apparatus of claim 53, wherein the remainder portion of the data is reproduced and the padding information is discarded.
55. The apparatus of claim 53, wherein the data is error correction data.
56. The apparatus of claim 53, wherein the padding information is stored in each unit block.
57. The apparatus of claim 53, wherein the padding information is stored in every other unit block.
58. The apparatus of claim 53, wherein the padding information comprises identification information identifying the data which is padding information and location information identifying a location of the padding information.
