Abstract
An ectrical socket comprises a wall mounted faceplate (17) with pin receiving apertures for a plug and an integral (built-in) cover having a cover panel (22) movable between an open position allowing access to the apertures and a closed position concealing the apertures. The cover panel (22) is secured in the closed position by engagement of latch pins (64) with latching means within the faceplate (17). The latch pins (64) are released by a key inserted into keyholes (66) in the side of the faceplate (17) and opens automatically under the biasing of a spring.
Claims (31)
1. A socket (or switch) comprising a face plate (17;41;92) provided with a plug receiving socket (43;74) (or switch) and at least one cover panel (22;45;98), said at least one cover panel (22;45;98) being movable between a closed position concealing the plug receiving socket (43;74) (or switch) and an open position providing access to the plug receiving socket (43;74) (or switch), said at least one cover panel (22;45;98) providing clearance to accommodate a plug (93) inserted in the plug receiving socket (43;74) such that the plug (93) is concealed behind said at least one cover panel (22;45;98) in the closed position, latch means (64;46;905) for holding said at least one cover panel (22;45;98) in the closed position; the latch means (64;46;905) being self-latching on movement of said at least one cover panel (22;45;98) towards the closed position to secure automatically said at least one cover panel (22;45; 98) in the closed position; actuator means (903) for releasing said at least one cover panel (22;45;98), and spring means (901) biasing said at least one cover panel (22;45;98) away from the closed position to move automatically said at least one cover panel (22;45;98) to the open position when the latch means (64;46;905) is released characterised in that the face plate (17;41;92) and said at least one cover panel (22;45;98) form an integral unit for connecting the face plate (17;41;92) to a mounting box with said at least one cover panel (22;45;98) attached to the face plate (17;41;92).

A socket (or switch) according to claim 1 wherein said at least one cover panel (22;45;98) is movably mounted with respect to a frame (21;42;94) integral with the faceplate (17;41;92) between the closed position, where it completely covers and encloses the faceplate (17;41;92) (and any plug or switch), and the open position, allowing access thereto.
3. A socket (or switch) according to claim 2 wherein the frame (21;42; 94) extends around the marginal edge of the faceplate (17;41; 92).
4. A socket (or switch) according to claim 2 or claim 3 wherein the latch means comprise a catch part (B) engaging with a retainer part (A).
5. A socket (or switch) according to claim 4 wherein one part of the latch means is on or adjacent an edge of the cover panel (22;45;98) and engages with the ether part on or in the frame (21;42;94).
6. A socket (or switch) according to claim 4 or claim 5 wherein one part (A) of the latch means is resilient and can be deflected to engage/disengage the other part (B).
7. A socket (or switch) according to claim 6 wherein the resilient pant is a flexible arm (A).
8. A socket (or switch) according to claim 6 or claim 7 wherein the resilient part (A) is deflected to engage automatically the other part (B) when the cover panel (22,45,98) is moved from the open position to the closed position.
9. A socket (or switch) according to nay of claims 6 to 8 therein the resilient part (A) is deflected to disengage the other part (B) under the control of the key operated release means (D).
10. A socket (or Switch) according to claim 9 wherein the key operated release means (D) includes at least one formation insertable through an opening (66;47;904) in the frame (21;42;94) (to engage the resilient part (A).
11. A socket (or switch) according to claim 10 wherein the opening (904) is protected by a movable shutter (113).
12. A socket (or switch) according to claim 10 or claim 11 wherein the resilient part (A) is deflected to disengage the other part (B) by rotational movement of the key operated release means (D).
13. A socket (or swatch) according to claim 10 or claim 11 wherein the resilient part (A) is deflected to disengage the other part (B) by axial sliding movement of the key operated release means (D).
14. A socket (or switch) according to any of claims 6 to 8 wherein the resilient part (A) is deflected to disengage the other part (B) by an electric actuator (1213).
15. A socket (or switch) according to claim 14 wherein the electric actuator (1213) includes a solenoid.
16. A socket (or switch) according to claim 15 wherein the solenoid controls a piston rod (1213) operable to deflect the resilient part to release the cover panel (1204).
17. A socket (or switch) according to any of claims 14 to 16 wherein the electric actuator (1213) is remotely operable.
18. A socket (or switch) according to claim 17 wherein the electric actuator (1213) is operable by a control signal.
19. A socket (or switch) according to claims 2 wherein the latch means comprises first and second latches (A,B;J,K) that are engaged to hold said at least one cover panel (CP) in the closed position and are released by the key operated means to allow said at least one cover panel (CP) to move to the open position.
20. A socket (or switch) according to claim 19 wherein the first and second latches (A,B;J,K) are engaged/disengaged in sequence.
21. A socket (or switch) according to claim 19 or claim 20 wherein the first and second latches (A,B;J,K) are engaged in response to movement of said at least one cover panel (CP) in different directions relative to the frame (CF).
22. A Socket (or switch) according to claim 21 wherein one latch (J,K) is engaged by relative axial movement parallel to the hinge axis of the cover panel (CP) and the other latch (A,B) is released by relative rotational movement about the hinge axis.
23. A socket (or switch) according to claim 22 wherein said one latch (J,K) is engaged first on closing said at least one cover panel (CF).
24. A socket (or switch) according to claim 22 or claim 23 wherein said other latch (A,B) is released first on opening said at least one cover panel (CP).
25. A socket (or switch) according to any of claims 22 to 24 wherein means (M) is provided to block relative axial movement parallel to the hinge axis in a direction to release said one latch (J,K) when said other latch (A,B) is engaged in the closed position.
26. A socket (or switch) according to claim 25 wherein said blocking means (M) comprises an abutment (M) on the frame (CF) that is located against a part of said at least one cover panel (CP) in the closed position.
27. A socket (or switch) according to claim 26 wherein on release of said other latch (A,B), said one latch (J,K) allows relative rotational movement of said at least one cover panel (CP) and frame (CF) to clear the abutment (M) blocking relative movement parallel to the hinge axis.
28. A socket (or switch) according to claim 27 wherein said at least one cover panel (CP) is biased in a direction parallel to said hinge axis and is movable against the axial biasing to release said one latch (J,K).
29. A socket (or switch) according to any of claims 26 to 28 wherein the abutment (M) includes a guide face (M1) to assist relative movement of said at least cover panel (CP) and base plate (CF) to engage said one latch (J,K).
30. A socket (or switch) according to claim 2 wherein cable exit means (96A) is provided including an opening in the frame (92) for passage of a cable lead (93A).
31. A socket (or switch) according to claim 30 wherein the cable exit means is arranged to transmit pulling forces applied to the cable lead (93A) to the frame (92).
