Abstract
An extension arm apparatus (100) is provided for mounting devices such as flat panel monitors above a workspace. The apparatus (100) includes upper and lower channels (104, 106) connected to a pair of endcaps (102, 108). One endcap (102) may connect to the workspace and the other endcap (108) may connect to an extension arm (110) or to the device to be mounted. At least one of the channels (104, 106) includes a reinforcement structure (120) providing additional support to the apparatus. The reinforcement structure (120) is tapered. A forearm extension (110) may also include a reinforcement structure (214). The endcaps (102, 108) may have interior spacers (194) that provide clearance for the sidewalk (114, 142) of the channels (104, 106), which may be fabricated without parting lines.
Claims (66)
1. An adjustable extension arm, comprising:
a first channel member having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and a pair of sidewalls extending from the first end to the second end, the pair of sidewalls having a substantially planar uninterrupted exterior face;
a second channel member having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and a pair of sidewalls extending from the first end to the second end;
a first endcap having first and second ends, the first end of the first endcap being coupled to the first channel member about the first end thereof and to the second channel member about the first end thereof; and a second endcap having first and second ends, the first end of the second endcap being coupled to the first channel member about the second end thereof and to the second channel member about the second end thereof.
a first channel member having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and a pair of sidewalls extending from the first end to the second end, the pair of sidewalls having a substantially planar uninterrupted exterior face;
a second channel member having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and a pair of sidewalls extending from the first end to the second end;
a first endcap having first and second ends, the first end of the first endcap being coupled to the first channel member about the first end thereof and to the second channel member about the first end thereof; and a second endcap having first and second ends, the first end of the second endcap being coupled to the first channel member about the second end thereof and to the second channel member about the second end thereof.
2. The extension arm of claim 1, wherein the first channel member is an upper channel member and the second channel member is a lower channel member.
3. The extension arm of claim 2, wherein the lower channel member is partly nested in the upper channel member.
4. An adjustable extension arm, comprising:
a first channel member having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and a pair of sidewalls extending from the first end to the second end;
a second channel member having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a pair of sidewalls extending from the first end to the second end;
a first endcap having an interior surface and first and second ends, the first end including a plurality of bosses contacting the first and second channel members at the first ends thereof, the bosses of the first endcap providing a clearance between the interior surface of the first endcap and the sidewalls of the first and second channel members; and a second endcap having an interior surface and first and second ends, the first end including a plurality of bosses contacting the first and second channel members at the second ends thereof, the bosses of the second endcap providing the clearance between the interior surface of the second endcap and the sidewalls of the first and second channel members.

a first endcap having an interior surface and first and second ends, the first end including a plurality of bosses contacting the first and second channel members at the first ends thereof, the bosses of the first endcap providing a clearance between the interior surface of the first endcap and the sidewalls of the first and second channel members; and a second endcap having an interior surface and first and second ends, the first end including a plurality of bosses contacting the first and second channel members at the second ends thereof, the bosses of the second endcap providing the clearance between the interior surface of the second endcap and the sidewalls of the first and second channel members.
5. The adjustable extension arm of claim 4, wherein the first and second endcaps each include at least one stop for arresting movement of an extension and retraction means.
6. The adjustable extension arm of claim 5, wherein the stops of the first and second endcaps each include an angled end, wherein the angle permits an enhanced range of motion for the extension and retraction means.
7. The adjustable extension arm of claim 6, wherein the angle is between 15 to 75 degrees.
8. The adjustable extension arm of claim 4, wherein the bosses of the first endcap are integrally formed with the interior surface of the first endcap and the bosses of the second endcap are integrally formed with the interior surface of the second endcap.
9. The adjustable extension arm of claim 4, wherein the clearance is less than about three millimeters.
10. An adjustable extension arm, comprising:
a first channel member having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and a pair of sidewalls extending from the first end to the second end, the pair of sidewalls having a substantially planar uninterrupted exterior face;
a second channel member having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and a pair of sidewalls extending from the first end to the second end, the sidewalls including a plurality of bosses adjacent to the first and second ends;
a first endcap having an interior surface and first and second ends, the first end including a plurality of bosses, a first pair of the first endcap bosses contacting the substantially planar uninterrupted exterior faces of the first channel member about the first end thereof, the first pair of first endcap bosses providing a clearance between the interior surface of the first endcap and the substantially planar uninterrupted exterior faces of the first channel member, a second pair of the first endcap bosses contacting a pair of the second channel member bosses adjacent to the first end thereof; and a second endcap having an interior surface and first and second ends, the first end including a plurality of bosses, a first pair of the second endcap bosses contacting the substantially planar uninterrupted ext'erior faces of the first channel member about the second end thereof, the first pair of second endcap bosses providing a clearance between the interior surface of the second endcap and the substantially planar uninterrupted exterior faces of the first channel member, a second pair of the second endcap bosses contacting a pair of the second channel member bosses adjacent to the second end thereof.

11. The adjustable extension arm of claim 10, wherein the first and the second endcaps each include at least one stop for arresting movement of an extension and retraction means.
12. The adjustable extension arm of claim 11, wherein the stops of the first and second endcaps each include an angled end, wherein the angle permits an enhanced range of motion for the extension and retraction means.
13. The adjustable extension arm of claim 12, wherein the angle is between 15 to 75 degrees.

16. An adjustable extension arm, comprising:
a first channel member having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a pair of sidewalls extending from the first end to the second end, and a reinforcement structure extending between the pair of sidewalls, the reinforcement structure tapering from the second end to the first end;
a second channel member having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and a pair of sidewalls extending from the first end to the second end;
a first endcap having first and second ends, the first end being coupled to the first ends of the first and second channel members; and a second endcap having first and second ends, the first end being coupled to the second ends of the first and second channel members.
a first channel member having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a pair of sidewalls extending from the first end to the second end, and a reinforcement structure extending between the pair of sidewalls, the reinforcement structure tapering from the second end to the first end;
a second channel member having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and a pair of sidewalls extending from the first end to the second end;
a first endcap having first and second ends, the first end being coupled to the first ends of the first and second channel members; and a second endcap having first and second ends, the first end being coupled to the second ends of the first and second channel members.
17. The adjustable extension arm of claim 16, wherein the reinforcement structure is internal to the first channel member.
18. The adjustable extension arm of claim 16, wherein the reinforcement structure extends along at least 50% of the length between the first and the second ends of the first channel-member.
19. The adjustable extension arm of claim 16, wherein the reinforcement structure extends along substantially the entire length between the first and the second ends of the first channel member.
20. The adjustable extension arm of claim 16, wherein the reinforcement structure comprises a crossrib structure.
21. The adjustable extension arm of claim 20, wherein the crossrib structure includes at least one crossrib cell.
22. The adjustable extension arm of claim 16, wherein the reinforcement structure includes a series of ribs and spaces between the ribs.
23. The adjustable extension arm of claim 22, wherein at least one of the ribs is a spanning member connecting to the pair of sidewalls.
24. The adjustable extension arm of claim 23, wherein the spanning member is curved between the sidewalls, the spanning member having a first height along a central region of the first channel member and a second height adjacent to the sidewalls, the second height being greater than the first height.
25. The adjustable extension arm of claim 16, wherein the reinforcement structure tapers between one and five degrees.
26. The adjustable extension arm of claim 16, wherein the reinforcement structure tapers along a central portion of the first channel and does not taper in areas adjacent to the sidewalls of the first channel member.
27. The adjustable extension arm of claim 16, wherein the first end of the first channel member includes a central recess for permitting enhanced movement of an extension and retraction means at least partly disposed between the first and second channel members.
28. The adjustable extension arm of claim 16, further comprising a forearm extension coupled to the second end of the second endcap.
29. The adjustable extension arm of claim 28, wherein the forearm extension includes a forearm reinforcement structure.
30. The adjustable extension arm of claim 29, wherein the forearm reinforcement structure is a crossrib structure.
31. The adjustable extension arm of claim 16, wherein the reinforcement structure comprises a plurality of steps between the first and second ends of the first channel member.
32. The adjustable extension arm of claim 31, wherein each of the steps has a different height.
33. The adjustable extension arm of claim 16, wherein the first channel member further comprises a ball stud receptacle connected to the reinforcement structure.
34. The adjustable extension arm of claim 16, wherein the first channel member further comprises a ball stud support, the ball stud support including a support structure connected to at least one of the sidewalls, the first end, or the second end.
35. The adjustable extension arm of claim 34, wherein the support structure is integral with the reinforcement structure.
36. An adjustable extension arm, comprising:
a first channel member having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a pair of sidewalls extending from the first end to the second end, and a reinforcement structure extending between the pair of sidewalls, the reinforcement structure having a first height along a central portion of the first channel and having a second height in areas adjacent to the sidewalls of the first channel member, the second height being greater than the first height;
a second channel member having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and a pair of sidewalls extending from the first end to the second end;
a first endcap having first and second ends, the first end being coupled to the first ends of the first and second channel members; and a second endcap having first and second ends, the first end being coupled to the second ends of the first and second channel members.
a first channel member having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a pair of sidewalls extending from the first end to the second end, and a reinforcement structure extending between the pair of sidewalls, the reinforcement structure having a first height along a central portion of the first channel and having a second height in areas adjacent to the sidewalls of the first channel member, the second height being greater than the first height;
a second channel member having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and a pair of sidewalls extending from the first end to the second end;
a first endcap having first and second ends, the first end being coupled to the first ends of the first and second channel members; and a second endcap having first and second ends, the first end being coupled to the second ends of the first and second channel members.
37. The adjustable extension arm of claim 36, wherein the reinforcement structure has a curved taper from the secon~d height adjacent to the sidewalls and the first height along the central portion of the first channel member.
38. The adjustable extension arm of claim 37, wherein the reinforcement structure further includes a longitudinal taper from the first end to the second end.
39. The adjustable extension arm of claim 36, wherein the first channel member further comprises a ball stud receptacle connected to the reinforcement structure.
40. The adjustable extension arm of claim 36, wherein the first channel member further comprises a ball stud support, the ball stud support including a support structure connected to at least one of the sidewalls, the first end, or the second end.
41. The adjustable extension arm of claim 40, wherein the support structure is integral with the reinforcement structure.
42. A channel for use in an adjustable extension arm, the channel comprising:
a body having first and second spaced apart sidewalls and a bottom wall therebetween, the body having a longitudinal axis and spaced apart first and second ends; and a reinforcement structure overlying the bottom wall between the spaced apart sidewalls, the reinforcement structure comprising a plurality of ribs extending along the bottom wall between the first and second ends of the body, the ribs varying in height between the first and second ends of the body.
a body having first and second spaced apart sidewalls and a bottom wall therebetween, the body having a longitudinal axis and spaced apart first and second ends; and a reinforcement structure overlying the bottom wall between the spaced apart sidewalls, the reinforcement structure comprising a plurality of ribs extending along the bottom wall between the first and second ends of the body, the ribs varying in height between the first and second ends of the body.
43. The channel of claim 42, wherein the ribs taper continuously in height between the first and second ends.
44. The channel of claim 42, wherein the ribs comprise a plurality of steps between the first and second ends, each of the steps being of different height.
45. The channel of claim 42, wherein the ribs are curved between the sidewalls.
46. The channel of claim 42, further comprising a ball stud receptacle connected to the reinforcement structure.
47. The channel of claim 42, further>comprising a ball stud support, the ball stud support including a support structure connected to at least one of the sidewalls or an endwall.
48. The adjustable extension arm of claim 47, wherein the support structure is integral with the reinforcement structure.
49. A channel for use in an adjustable extension arm, the channel comprising:
a body having first and second spaced apart sidewalls and a bottom wall therebetween, the body having a longitudinal axis and spaced apart first and second ends; and a reinforcement structure having a first height along a central portion of the longitudinal axis and having a second height along the sidewalls, the second height being greater than the first height.

a first one of the upper and lower channels including a body having first and second spaced apart sidewalls and a bottom wall therebetween, the body of the first channel having a longitudinal axis and spaced apart first and second ends, and a reinforcement structure overlying the bottom wall between the spaced apart sidewalls, the reinforcement structure comprising a plurality of ribs extending along the bottom wall between the first and second ends of the body, the ribs varying in height between the first and second ends of the body; and a second one of the upper and lower channels including a body having first and second spaced apart sidewalls and a bottom wall therebetween, the body of the second channel having a longitudinal axis and spaced apart first and second ends;
wherein the sidewalls of the second channel are spaced so as to nest inside the sidewalls of the first channel.

55. A forearm extension for use in an adjustable extension arm, the forearm extension comprising:
a body having first and second spaced apart sidewalls and a bottom wall therebetween, the body having a longitudinal axis and spaced apart first and second ends;
a first coupling for attaching to an endcap of the adjustable extension arm, the first coupling being connected to the first end;
a second coupling for attaching to a device supported by the adjustable extension arm; and a reinforcement structure overlying the bottom wall between the spaced apart sidewalls.
a body having first and second spaced apart sidewalls and a bottom wall therebetween, the body having a longitudinal axis and spaced apart first and second ends;
a first coupling for attaching to an endcap of the adjustable extension arm, the first coupling being connected to the first end;
a second coupling for attaching to a device supported by the adjustable extension arm; and a reinforcement structure overlying the bottom wall between the spaced apart sidewalls.
56. The forearm extension of claim 55, wherein the reinforcement structure comprises a plurality of ribs extending along the bottom wall between the first and second ends of the body.
57. The forearm extension of claim 56, wherein the ribs vary in height between the first and second ends of the body.
58. The forearm extension of claim 56, wherein the ribs vary in height between a central portion of the body and the sidewalls, the ribs having a first height along the central region and a second height adjacent to the sidewalls, the second height being greater than the first height.
59. The forearm extension of claim 55, wherein the sidewalls are symmetrical about the longitudinal axis.
60. The forearm extension of claim 59, wherein the body is angled.
61. The forearm extension of claim 60, wherein the angle is at least 30 degrees.
62. The forearm extension of claim 60, wherein the angle is less than 60 degrees.
63. The forearm extension of claim 60, wherein the angle is between 40 and 50 degrees.
64. A method of fabricating an adjustable extension arm, comprising:
casting a first channel member, the first channel member having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a pair of sidewalls extending from the first end to the second end, and a bottom wall extending between the sidewalls, the pair of sidewalls having a substantially planar uninterrupted exterior face without parting lines;
forming a second channel member having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a pair of sidewalls extending from the first end to the second end, and a bottom wall extending between the sidewalls;
forming a first endcap having first and second ends;
forming a second endcap having first and second ends;
coupling the first end of the first endcap to the first channel member about the first end thereof and to=. the second channel member about the first end thereof; and coupling the first end of the second endcap to the first channel member about the second end thereof and to the second channel member about the second end thereof.
casting a first channel member, the first channel member having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a pair of sidewalls extending from the first end to the second end, and a bottom wall extending between the sidewalls, the pair of sidewalls having a substantially planar uninterrupted exterior face without parting lines;
forming a second channel member having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a pair of sidewalls extending from the first end to the second end, and a bottom wall extending between the sidewalls;
forming a first endcap having first and second ends;
forming a second endcap having first and second ends;
coupling the first end of the first endcap to the first channel member about the first end thereof and to=. the second channel member about the first end thereof; and coupling the first end of the second endcap to the first channel member about the second end thereof and to the second channel member about the second end thereof.
65. The method of claim 64, further comprising:
forming a forearm extension having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a pair of sidewalls extending from the first end to the second end, and a bottom wall extending between the sidewalls; and coupling the first end of the forearm extension to the second end of the second endcap.
forming a forearm extension having a first end, a second end opposite the first end, a pair of sidewalls extending from the first end to the second end, and a bottom wall extending between the sidewalls; and coupling the first end of the forearm extension to the second end of the second endcap.
66. The method of claim 64, wherein casting the first channel member includes forming a reinforcement structure integral with the bottom wall.
