Abstract
An intravascular balloon catheter (10) having an ultra soft tip. The catheter includes a braided reinforcement member (70) extending substantially the length of the elongate shaft (60). A balloon (50) is disposed at the distal end of the elongate shaft. An ultra soft tip is formed from a distal portion of balloon material extending distal of the distal end of the elongate shaft.
Claims (38)
1. A catheter comprising:
an elongate shaft having a reinforcement member having a proximal end and a distal end, an outer layer having a proximal end and a distal end disposed about a portion of the reinforcement member, the distal end of the outer layer terminating proximal of the distal end of the reinforcement member, a distal extension having a proximal end and a distal end disposed about a portion of the reinforcement member, the proximal end of the extension disposed distal of the distal end of the outer layer, an inflatable member having a proximal waist section and a distal waist section, the distal waist section secured to the distal extension, wherein a portion of the distal waist section extends distal of the distal end of the distal extension.
an elongate shaft having a reinforcement member having a proximal end and a distal end, an outer layer having a proximal end and a distal end disposed about a portion of the reinforcement member, the distal end of the outer layer terminating proximal of the distal end of the reinforcement member, a distal extension having a proximal end and a distal end disposed about a portion of the reinforcement member, the proximal end of the extension disposed distal of the distal end of the outer layer, an inflatable member having a proximal waist section and a distal waist section, the distal waist section secured to the distal extension, wherein a portion of the distal waist section extends distal of the distal end of the distal extension.
2. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the proximal end of the distal extension is adjacent the distal end of the reinforcement member.
3. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the portion of the distal waist section extending distal of the distal end of the distal extension forms a distal tip.
4. The catheter of claim 3, wherein the distal tip is an ultra soft tip.
5. The catheter of claim 4, wherein the ultra soft tip has a durometer hardness of between about 5A to about 40A.
6. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the elongate shaft further comprises an inner layer disposed within at least a portion of the reinforcement member.
7. The catheter of claim 6, wherein the inner layer has a proximal end and a distal end, the distal end of the inner layer disposed proximal of the distal end of the distal extension.
8. The catheter of claim 6, wherein the inner layer includes a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).
9. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the outer layer includes a thermoplastic polyester elastomer.
10. The catheter of claim 9, wherein the thermoplastic polyester elastomer is HYTREL.
11. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the distal extension includes a low-density polyethylene (LDPE).
12. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the inflatable member includes a thermoplastic rubber elastomer.
13. The catheter of claim 12, wherein the thermoplastic rubber elastomer is CHRONOPRENE.
14. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the reinforcement member is a braided member.
15. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the reinforcement member is a micromachined hypotube.
16. A catheter comprising:
an elongate shaft including a braided member having a proximal end, a distal end and a lumen extending therethrough, an outer layer disposed about at least a portion of the braided member, the outer layer having a distal end extending distal of the braided member, an inner layer disposed in at least a portion of the lumen of the braided member, the inner layer having a distal end disposed proximal of the distal end of the outer layer, and an inflatable member having a proximal waist section and a distal waist section, the inflatable member disposed about a distal portion of the elongate shaft, the distal waist section having a portion extending distal of the distal end of the outer layer, wherein the distally extending portion of the distal waist section forms a distal tip.
an elongate shaft including a braided member having a proximal end, a distal end and a lumen extending therethrough, an outer layer disposed about at least a portion of the braided member, the outer layer having a distal end extending distal of the braided member, an inner layer disposed in at least a portion of the lumen of the braided member, the inner layer having a distal end disposed proximal of the distal end of the outer layer, and an inflatable member having a proximal waist section and a distal waist section, the inflatable member disposed about a distal portion of the elongate shaft, the distal waist section having a portion extending distal of the distal end of the outer layer, wherein the distally extending portion of the distal waist section forms a distal tip.
17. The catheter of claim 16, wherein the outer layer includes a first section having a proximal end and a distal end and a second section having a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the first section includes a first material and the second section includes a second material.
18. The catheter of claim 17, wherein the proximal end of the second section and the distal end of the first section form an interface.
19. The catheter of claim 18, wherein the distal waist section is disposed distal of the interface.
20. The catheter of claim 16 wherein the distal tip is an ultra soft tip.
21. The catheter of claim 20, wherein the ultra soft tip has a durometer hardness of between about 5A to about 40A.
22. The catheter of claim 16, wherein the distal waist section of the inflatable member includes a thermoplastic rubber elastomer.
23. The catheter of claim 22, wherein the thermoplastic rubber elastomer is CHRONOPRENE.
24. The catheter of claim 17, wherein the first material includes a thermoplastic polyester elastomer and the second material includes a low-density polyethylene (LDPE).
25. The catheter of claim 24, wherein the thermoplastic polyester elastomer is HYTREL.
26. The catheter of claim 16, wherein the inner layer includes a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).
27. A method of forming a catheter including the steps of:
providing an elongate shaft including a braided reinforcement member having a proximal end, a distal end and a lumen extending therethrough, disposing an outer layer about at least a portion of the braided reinforcement member, the outer layer having a proximal end and a distal end, disposing a sleeve having a proximal end and a distal end about a portion of the braided reinforcement member distal of the distal end of the outer layer, the sleeve extending distal of the distal end of the braided reinforcement sleeve, disposing an inflatable balloon having a proximal waist segment and a distal waist segment about a distal portion of the elongate shaft, wherein the distal waist segment is disposed about the sleeve and a portion of the distal waist segment extends distal of the distal end of the sleeve, and forming a distal tip with the portion of the distal waist segment extending distal of the distal end of the sleeve.
providing an elongate shaft including a braided reinforcement member having a proximal end, a distal end and a lumen extending therethrough, disposing an outer layer about at least a portion of the braided reinforcement member, the outer layer having a proximal end and a distal end, disposing a sleeve having a proximal end and a distal end about a portion of the braided reinforcement member distal of the distal end of the outer layer, the sleeve extending distal of the distal end of the braided reinforcement sleeve, disposing an inflatable balloon having a proximal waist segment and a distal waist segment about a distal portion of the elongate shaft, wherein the distal waist segment is disposed about the sleeve and a portion of the distal waist segment extends distal of the distal end of the sleeve, and forming a distal tip with the portion of the distal waist segment extending distal of the distal end of the sleeve.
28. The method of forming a catheter according to claim 27, further comprising the step of:
disposing an inner layer within at least a portion of the lumen of the braided reinforcement member, the inner layer having a distal end disposed proximal of the distal end of the sleeve.
disposing an inner layer within at least a portion of the lumen of the braided reinforcement member, the inner layer having a distal end disposed proximal of the distal end of the sleeve.
29. The method of forming a catheter according to claim 27, wherein the distal tip is an ultra soft tip.
30. The method of forming a catheter according to claim 29, wherein the ultra soft tip has a durometer hardness of between about 5A and about 40A.
31. The method of forming a catheter according to claim 27, wherein the outer layer includes a thermoplastic polyester elastomer.
32. The method of forming a catheter according to claim 31, wherein the thermoplastic polyester elastomer is HYTREL.
33. The method of forming a catheter according to claim 27, wherein the sleeve includes a low-density polyethylene (LDPE).
34. The method of forming a catheter according to claim 27, wherein the inflatable balloon includes a thermoplastic rubber elastomer.
35. The method of forming a catheter according to claim 34, wherein the thermoplastic rubber elastomer is CHRONOPRENE.
36. A catheter comprising:
an elongate shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, and an inflatable member disposed about a distal portion of the elongate shaft, the inflatable member having a material, the inflatable member including a distal waist section including the material extending distal of the distal end of the elongate shaft to form a distal tip including the material, wherein the material has a durometer hardness of between about 5A to about 40A.
an elongate shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, and an inflatable member disposed about a distal portion of the elongate shaft, the inflatable member having a material, the inflatable member including a distal waist section including the material extending distal of the distal end of the elongate shaft to form a distal tip including the material, wherein the material has a durometer hardness of between about 5A to about 40A.
37. The catheter of claim 36, wherein the material is a thermoplastic rubber elastomer.
38. The catheter of claim 37, wherein the thermoplastic rubber elastomer is CHRONOPRENE.
