Abstract

The application discloses a bit, comprising a plurality of two-part intervertebral disc implants (100) having different sizes; a plurality of implant dispensers (456) each said dispenser holding together one of said two-part intervertebral disc implants as a single implantable unit, wherein each said implant dispenser has indicia corresponding to the size of said intervertebral disc implant held by said implant dispenser.

Claims (25)

1. ~A method of inserting an intervertebral disc implant into a disc space comprising:
accessing a spinal segment having a first vertebral body, a second vertebral body and a disc space between the first and second vertebral bodies;
securing a first pin to the first vertebral body and a second pin to the second vertebral body;
using said first and second pins for distracting the disc space;
providing an inserter holding said intervertebral disc implant;
engaging said inserter with said first and second pins;
and advancing said inserter toward the disc space for inserting said intervertebral disc implant into the disc space, wherein said first and second pins align and guide said inserter toward the disc space.
2. ~The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said inserter includes an inserter head having an upper channel and a lower channel.
3. ~The method as claimed in claim 2, wherein during the advancing step, said first pin is in contact with said upper channel and said second pin is in contact with said second pin.
4. ~The method as claimed in claim 2, wherein said channels taper inwardly toward one another for urging said first and second pins away from one another as said inserter advances toward the disc space.
5. ~The method as claimed in claim 2, wherein said inserter head has a distal end adapted to contact vertebral bone and a proximal end, and wherein said upper and lower channels taper inwardly toward one another between said proximal and distal ends of said inserter head.
6. ~The method as claimed in claim 5, wherein said inserter head includes distally extending arms for securing said intervertebral disc implant.
7. ~The method as claimed in claim 6, wherein each of said distally extending arms includes an inwardly extending projection engageable with said intervertebral disc implant.
8. ~A method of inserting an intervertebral disc implant into a disc space comprising:
accessing a spinal segment having a first vertebral body, a second vertebral body and a disc space between the first and second vertebral bodies;
securing a first pin to the first vertebral body and a second pin to the second vertebral body;
using said first and second pins for distracting the disc space;
engaging a chisel guide having a distal head with said first and second pins; and advancing said chisel guide toward the disc space for inserting said distal head of said chisel guide into said disc space, wherein said first and second pins align and guide said chisel guide as said chisel guide advances toward the disc space;
coupling a chisel having one or more cutting blades with said chisel guide and advancing said one or more cutting blades toward said first and second vertebral bodies for forming channels in one or more endplates of said first and second vertebral bodies.
9. ~The method as claimed in claim 8, further comprising:

providing an inserter holding said intervertebral disc implant;
after forming channels in the one or more endplates of said first and second vertebral bodies, disengaging said chisel guide from said first and second pins and engaging said inserter with said first and second pins; and advancing said inserter toward the disc space for inserting said intervertebral disc implant into said disc space, wherein said first and second pins align and guide said inserter as said inserter advances toward the disc space.
10. ~The method as claimed in claim 8, wherein said distal head of said chisel guide has a top surface with at least one groove formed therein for guiding said one or more chisel blades toward the disc space.
11. ~A kit comprising:
a plurality of two-part intervertebral disc implants having different sizes;
a plurality of implant dispensers, each said dispenser holding together one of said two-part intervertebral disc implants as a single implantable unit, wherein each said implant dispenser has indicia corresponding to the size of said intervertebral disc implant held by said implant dispenser.
12. ~The kit as claimed in claim 11, wherein the indicia includes a color code.
13. ~The kit as claimed in claim 11, wherein the indicia includes text indicating the size of said intervertebral disc implant held by said implant dispenser.
14. ~The kit as claimed in claim 11, wherein each said intervertebral disc implant has a top element including a bone engaging surface and an articulating surface and a bottom element including a bone engaging surface and an articulating surface, wherein said implant dispenser holds the articulating surfaces of said top and bottom elements in contact with one another.
15. ~The kit as claimed in claim 11, wherein said implant dispensers are flexible.
16. ~The kit as claimed in claim 15, wherein each said implant dispenser comprises:
a first arm engaging a top element of said intervertebral disc implant;
a second arm engaging a bottom element of said intervertebral disc implant;
a connecting element for interconnecting said first and second arms, wherein said connecting member is flexible for enabling said first and second arms to move away from one another for releasing said intervertebral disc implant.
17. ~The kit as claimed in claim 11, further comprising a plurality inserters, said inserters being adapted to couple with said implant dispensers for transferring said intervertebral disc implants from said implant dispensers to said inserters.
18. ~The kit as claimed in claim 17, wherein said intervertebral disc implants are transferable from said implant dispensers to said inserters while being maintained as a single implantable unit.
19. ~The kit as claimed in claim 11, wherein each said inserter has indicia corresponding to the size of one of said intervertebral disc implants.
20. ~The kit as claimed in claim 17, wherein the indicia on said inserter includes a color code.
21. ~A template for marking score lines on a spinal segment including a superior vertebral body, an inferior vertebral body and a disc between the superior and inferior vertebral bodies, said template comprising:
a shaft having a proximal end and a distal end;
a template marker provided at the distal end of said shaft, said template marker comprising a cruciform-shaped structure including:
a first vertical arm, a second vertical arm that extends away from said first arm, said first and second vertical arms being aligned with one another along a first axis, a first lateral arm, a second lateral arm extending away from said first lateral arm, said first and second lateral arms being aligned with one another along a second axis, wherein distal surfaces of said first and second lateral arms form a concave curved surface that conforms to an anterior surface of the disc between the superior and inferior vertebral bodies.
22. ~The template as claimed in claim 21, further comprising a central pin provided at said distal end of said shaft for being inserted into the disc.
23. ~The template as claimed in claim 21, further comprising a plurality of pins extending along the lateral arms for being inserted into the disc.
24. ~The template as claimed in claim 22, wherein said vertical arms and said lateral arms spread outwardly from said distal end of said shaft.
25. ~The template as claimed in claim 21, wherein said first vertical arms includes a first distally extending tack for engaging an anterior surface of the first vertebral body and said second vertical arm includes a second distally extending tack for engaging an anterior surface of the second vertebral body.
