Abstract
An apparatus for optically measuring and electronically recording a dose is disclosed. A holding means receives and holds a syringe, which has a barrel and a plunger, in a measurement position. A light source in optical communication with the barrel and the plunger generates light incident on the barrel and the plunger when the syringe is in the measurement position. An optical detector is positioned to detect a total amount of the light that is reflected from the syringe. A recording means in electrical communication with the optical detector records a dose datum indicative of the total amount of the light that is transmitted. The dose datum is indicative of the dose. A response enhancing element, connected with the plunger of the syringe and in optical communication with the optical detector, reflects light to the optical detector proportional to the dose datum.
Claims (10)
1. An apparatus for optically measuring and electronically recording a dose, said apparatus comprising:
a) a holding means for receiving and holding a syringe in a measurement position, said syringe having a barrel and a plunger;
b) a light source in optical communication with the barrel and the plunger, said light source for generating light incident on the barrel and the plunger when the syringe is in the measurement position;
c) an optical detector positioned to detect a total amount of said light that is reflected from said syringe;
d) a recording means in electrical communication with said optical detector, said recording means for recording a dose datum indicative of said total amount of said light that is transmitted, wherein said dose datum is indicative of said dose; and e) a response enhancing element connected with the plunger of said syringe and in optical communication with said optical detector, whereby the response enhancing element reflects light to said optical detector proportional to said dose datum.

d) a recording means in electrical communication with said optical detector, said recording means for recording a dose datum indicative of said total amount of said light that is transmitted, wherein said dose datum is indicative of said dose; and e) a response enhancing element connected with the plunger of said syringe and in optical communication with said optical detector, whereby the response enhancing element reflects light to said optical detector proportional to said dose datum.
2. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, further comprising an alignment means for aligning the syringe with said optical detector when the syringe is in the measurement position.
3. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, further comprising a housing, said housing enclosing said light source, said optical detector, and said recording means;
wherein said housing is sufficiently compact to be hand-held and carried by a patient.

4. An apparatus as claimed in any one of claim 1 to claim 3, wherein said total amount of light transmitted is indicative of a quantity of liquid in the syringe, said quantity of liquid being indicative of the dose.
5. An apparatus as claimed in any one of claim 1 to claim 4, further comprising a light source for generating light incident on the syringe.
6. An apparatus as claimed in any one of claim 1 to claim 4, further comprising a computing means and a calibration memory means, said computing means in electrical communication with said optical detector, with said recording means, and with said calibration memory means.
7. An apparatus as claimed in any one of claim 1 to claim 6, further comprising a housing, wherein said optical detector occupies a fixed spatial relationship to said holding means, and said holding means is mechanically coupled to said housing.
8. An apparatus as claimed in claim 7, wherein said holding means is internal or external to said housing.
9. An apparatus as claimed in any one of claim 1 to claim 7, wherein the computing means is for computing a dose datum indicative of an insulin dose from said total amount of said light that is transmitted; and wherein the apparatus further comprises a blood glucose meter for determining a blood glucose datum indicative of a blood glucose level;
and wherein the recording means is in electrical communication with said computing means and said blood glucose meter, for recording said dose datum and said blood glucose datum.

10. An apparatus as claimed in claim 9, further comprising a port connected to said recording means, for transmitting said dose datum and said blood glucose datum from said recording means to a host computer.
