Abstract

A shunt rivet for implantation in the aorta and inferior vena cava to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and a method of treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Claims (30)

1. An intravascular connector, comprising:
at least a first pair of clinch members having a deployed configuration longitudinally disposed relative to contiguous portions of a first vessel and a second vessel such that the first pair of clinch members are biased to close upon contiguous parallel portions of the first and second vessels; and at least a second pair of clinch members having a deployed configuration transverse to the first pair such that the second pair of clinch members are biased to exert a nominal pressure on circumferentially spaced points on side walls of the first and second vessels.
2. The connector of claim 1 wherein each clinch member defines a slit therealong about which radial-deformation of the clinch members occurs when the connector is radially expanded.
3. The connector of claim 1 wherein the first pair of clinch members is biased to evert such that a distal portion of each apposed clinch member is proximate to one another when released in its deployed configuration.
4. The connector of claim 3 wherein the distal portion of each apposed clinch member is configured to form an atraumatic bearing surface there between for impingement on the first and second vessels.
5. The connector of claim 1 wherein the first pair of clinch members comprise a continuously formed clip absent an intervening waist segment.
6. The connector of claim 1 wherein the second pair of clinch members defines an angle relative to the first pair of clinch members.
7. The connector of claim 1 wherein the first vessel comprises an artery.
8. The connector of claim 7 wherein the clinch members of the first and second pair disposed within the artery are inclined towards an upstream or retrograde direction within the artery.
9. The connector of claim 1 wherein the second vessel comprises a vein.
10. The connector of claim 9 wherein the clinch members of the first and second pair disposed within the vein are inclined towards an upstream or retrograde direction within the vein.
11. The connector of claim 1 wherein the second pair of clinch members are biased to establish a slight compliance mismatch between the first and second vessels.
12. The connector of claim 1 wherein the second pair of clinch members each define a distal portion which is spaced apart from one another in the deployed configuration.
13. The connector of claim 1 wherein the second pair of clinch members comprise a continuously formed clip absent an intervening waist segment.
14. The connector of claim 13 wherein the second pair of clinch members form an arcuate or bow shape having a distal portion arcing outwardly relative to the connector.
15. The connector of claim 13 wherein the second pair of clinch-members is configured to form an atraumatic bearing surface therebetween for impingement on the first and second vessels.
16. The connector of claim 1 further comprising a therapeutic drug coating or membrane at least partially covering the connector.
17. An intravascular connector, comprising:

at least one pair of clips having a deployed configuration longitudinally disposed relative to contiguous portions of a first vessel and a second vessel;
at least one pair of tension springs having a deployed configuration transverse to the pair of clips such that the tension springs extend at least partially into the first and second vessels, and wherein an arrangement of the clips and tension springs define an opening therebetween such than an open flow path is maintained between the first and second vessels.
18. The connector of claim 17 wherein the pair of clips is biased to close upon contiguous parallel portions of the first and second vessels.
19. The connector of claim 17 wherein a distal portion of each clip member forms an atraumatic bearing surface for impingement on the first and second vessels.

22. The connector of claim 20 wherein the tension springs are comprised of a continuously formed member absent an intervening waist segment.
23. The connector of claim 17 wherein the tension springs are biased to exert a nominal pressure on circumferentially spaced points on side walls of respective first and second vessels.
24. The connector of claim 17 wherein the connector comprises at least two pairs of clips positioned outwardly relative to one another.
25. The connector of claim 24 further comprising at least two pairs of tension springs positioned outwardly relative to one another.
26. The connector of claim 25 wherein the pairs of clips and pairs of tension springs are positioned in a circular arrangement with a closed end of each clip or tension spring being secured to a closed end of an adjacent clip or tension spring such that an open end of each clip or tension spring is directed outwardly from the circular arrangement.
27. The connector of claim 26 wherein the pairs of clips and pairs of tension springs are arranged in an alternating manner.
28. The connector of claim 26 wherein the pairs of clips and pairs of tension springs are spaced between 30 to 90 degrees from one another in the circular arrangement.
29. The connector of claim 17 wherein a tip of each clip closes upon a point in a first or second vessel which is longitudinally spaced from the opening.
30. The connector of claim 17 further comprising a therapeutic drug coating or membrane at least partially covering the connector.
