Abstract

A system of downhole communication and control is provided in methods and associated apparatus for data retrieval, monitoring and tool actuation. In a described embodiment, an item of equipment (16) installed in a tubular string (14) has a first communication device associated therewith. A tool (12) conveyed into the tubular string has a second communication device therein. Communication is established between the first and second devices. Such communication may be utilized to control operation of the tool (12), retrieve status information regarding the item of equipment, supply power to the first device and/or identify the item of equipment (16) to the tool (12).

Claims (84)

1. A downhole plug system, comprising a plug assembly;
a first communication device;
a closure member selectively positionable in engaged and released positions relative to the plug assembly, the closure member blocking flow through the plug assembly in the engaged position, and flow through the plug assembly being permitted in the released position; and a tool positionable relative to the first device and operable to cause displacement of the closure member between the engaged and released positions, the tool including a second communication device, and communication being established between the first and second devices.
2. The plug system according to Claim 1, wherein the first device communicates data indicative of pressure applied to the closure member
3 The plug system according to Claim 2, wherein the first device is connected to a pressure sensor of the closure member.
4. The plug system according to Claim 2, wherein the first device communicates data indicative of a pressure differential across the closure member.
5. The plug system according to Claim 2, wherein data is communicated from the first to the second device, and wherein the tool transmits the data to a remote location.
6. The plug system according to Claim 1, wherein the tool is permitted to displace the closure member only when predetermined acceptable data is transmitted from at least one sensor via the first and second devices.
7. The plug system according to Claim 1, wherein the tool is permitted to displace the closure member to the released position only when a differential pressure across the closure member is within a predetermined range.
8. The plug system according to Claim 1, wherein the released position is an equalizing position configured for reducing a pressure differential across the closure member.
9. The plug system according to Claim 1, wherein the tool includes a first pressure sensor sensing pressure on a first side of the closure member, and the closure member includes a second pressure sensor sensing pressure on a second side of the closure member
10. The plug system according to Claim 1, further comprising a first pressure sensor sensing pressure on a first side of the closure member, and a second pressure sensor sensing pressure on a second side of the closure member.
11. The plug system according to Claim 1, wherein the tool includes an engagement member which is permitted to engage the closure member only when the second device is in sufficiently close proximity to the first device.

The plug system according to Claim 1, wherein the plug assembly is one of a plurality of structures interconnected in the tubular string, and wherein the plug assembly is selected from the plurality of structures for operation of the tool therewith in response to the communication between the first and second devices
13. The plug system according to Claim 12, wherein each of the structures has a communication device associated therewith, and wherein the tool is programmed to activate only the first device from a dormant state to an active state.
14. The plug system according to Claim 12, wherein each of the structures has a communication device associated therewith, and wherein the first device is activated from a dormant state to an active state only in response to communication from the second device.
15. The plug system according to Claim 1, wherein power for operation of the first device is supplied by the tool.
16. The plug system according to Claim 1, wherein power for operation of the first device is supplied by a power source of the closure member.
17. The plug system according to Claim 1, wherein the first device is connected to a sensor including a power source.
18. The plug system according to Claim 17, wherein power for operation of the first device is supplied by the sensor power source.
19. A downhole packer system, comprising:
a packer including a first communication device and an outwardly extendable seat member; and a tool positionable relative to the first device and including a second communication device, communication being established between the first and second devices.
20. The packer system according to Claim 19, wherein the first device communicates data indicative of pressure applied to the seal member.
21. The packer system according to Claim 20, wherein the first device is connected to a pressure sensor of the packer.
22 The packer system according to Claim 20, wherein the first device communicates data indicative of a pressure differential across the seal member.
23. The packer system according to Claim 20, wherein data is communicated from the first to the second device, and wherein the tool transmits the data to a remote location.
24. The packer system according to Claim 19, wherein the first device is remotely positioned relative to the remainder of the packer.
25. The packer system according to Claim 19, wherein the packer includes a first pressure sensor sensing pressure on a first side of the seal member, and a second pressure sensor sensing pressure on a second side of the seal member.
26. The packer system according to Claim 19, wherein the packer is one of a plurality of structures interconnected in the tubular string, and wherein the packer is selected from the plurality of structures for operation of the tool therewith in response to the communication between the first and second devices
27. The packer system according to Claim 26, wherein each of the structures has a communication device associated therewith, and wherein the tool is programmed to activate only the first device from a dormant state to an active state.
28. The packer system according to Claim 26, wherein each of the structures has a communication device associated therewith, and wherein the first device is activated from a dormant state to an active state only in response to communication from the second device.
29. The packer system according to Claim 19, wherein power for operation of the first device is supplied by the tool.
30. The packer system according to Claim 19, wherein power for operation of the first device is supplied by a power source of the packer.
31. The packer system according to Claim 19, wherein the first device is connected to a sensor including a power source.
32. The packer system according to Claim 31, wherein power to operate the first device is supplied by the sensor power source.
33. The packer system according to Claim 19, wherein the first device is connected to a seal member sensor.
34. The packer system according to Claim 33, wherein the seal member sensor is a temperature sensor.
35. The packer system according to Claim 33, wherein the seal member sensor is a compression sensor.
36. The packer system according to Claim 33, wherein the seal member sensor is a resistivity sensor.
37. The packer system according to Claim 33, wherein the seal member sensor is a strain sensor.
38. The packer system according to Claim 33, wherein the seal member sensor is a hardness sensor.
39. The packer system according to Claim 33, wherein the seal member sensor is a resonant frequency sensor.
40. The packer system according to Claim 39, wherein the seal member sensor induces vibration in the seal member.
41. The packer system according to Claim 19, wherein the packer includes a position sensor.
42. The packer system according to Claim 41, wherein the position sensor indicates a position of a seal assembly relative to the packer.
43. The packer system according to Claim 19, wherein the first device communicates data indicative of a position of a seal assembly relative to the packer.
44. A downhole tubular string monitoring system, comprising-a tubular string including a first sensor and a first communication device communicating data acquired by the first sensor; and a tool positionable relative to the first device and including a second communication device communicating with the first device.
45. The monitoring system according to Claim 44, wherein the communicated data is indicative of pressure applied to the first sensor.
46. The monitoring system according to Claim 44, wherein the first device communicates data indicative of a pressure differential across the tubular string.
47. The monitoring system according to Claim 44, wherein the tool transmits the data to a remote location.
48. The monitoring system according to Claim 44, wherein the first device is remotely positioned relative to the first sensor.
49. The monitoring system according to Claim 44, wherein the tool includes a second sensor sensing pressure on the interior of the tubular string, and wherein the first sensor senses pressure on the exterior of the tubular string.
50. The monitoring system according to Claim 44, wherein the first device is one of a plurality of communication devices interconnected in the tubular string, and wherein the first device is selected from the plurality of structures for operation of the tool therewith in response to the communication between the first and second devices.
51. The monitoring system according to Claim 44, wherein the first device is activated from a dormant state to an active state only in response to communication from the second device.
52. The monitoring system according to Claim 44, wherein power for operation of the first device is supplied by the tool.
53. The monitoring system according to Claim 44, wherein power for operation of the first device is supplied by a power source interconnected in the tubular string.
54. The monitoring system according to Claim 44, wherein the first device is connected to a sensor including a power source.
55. The monitoring system according to Claim 54, wherein power to operate the first device is supplied by the sensor power source.
56. The monitoring system according to Claim 44, wherein the first sensor is a strain sensor.
57. The monitoring system according to Claim 44, wherein the first sensor is a temperature sensor.
58. The monitoring system according to Claim 44, wherein the first sensor is a pressure sensor.
59. The monitoring system according to Claim 44, wherein the first sensor is associated with an item of equipment interconnected in the tubular string, and wherein the tool is permitted to displace a closure member of the item of equipment to an open position only when predetermined acceptable data is transmitted from the first sensor via the first and second devices.
60. The monitoring system according to Claim 59, wherein the predetermined acceptable data indicates an acceptable pressure differential across the closure member.
61. The monitoring system according to Claim 59, wherein the tool is permitted to displace the closure member to an equalizing position when the predetermined acceptable data is not transmitted from the first sensor.
62. A particle detection system, comprising:

a tubular member interconnnected in a tubular string;
a particle sensor configured for detecting flow of particles through the tubular member;
a first communication device connected to the particle sensor;
a tool received in the tubular string, the tool including a second communication device, and communication being established between the first and second devices; and a memory device interconnected to the sensor and connected to the first communication device.
63. The system according to Claim 62, wherein data is transferred from the memory device to the tool when the first communication device communicates with the second communication device.
64. A particle detection system, comprising:
a tubular member interconnnected in a tubular string;
a particle sensor configured for detecting flow of particles through the tubular member;
a first communication device connected to the particle sensor;
and a tool received in the tubular string, the tool including a second communication device, and communication being established between the first and second devices, indications of particle flow through the tubular member being transferred directly from the particle sensor to the tool via the first and second communication devices in real time.
65. A particle detection system, comprising:
a tubular member interconnected in a tubular string;

a particle sensor configured for detecting flow of particles through the tubular member;
a first communication device connected to the particle sensor;
and a tool received in the tubular string, the tool including a second communication device, and communication being established between the first and second devices, the first and second communication devices communicating via direct electrical contact.
66. A particle detection system, comprising:
a tubular member interconnected in a tubular string;
a particle sensor configured for detecting flow of particles through the tubular member;
a first communication device connected to the particle sensor;
and a tool received in the tubular string, the tool including a second communication device, and communication being established between the first and second devices, the second communication device supplying power to the first communication device, thereby permitting the first device to communicate with the second device.
67. The system according to Claim 66, further comprising a memory device interconnected to the sensor.
68. The system according to Claim 67, wherein the memory device stores indications of particle flow through the tubular member as detected by the sensor.
69. The system according to Claim 66, wherein the power is supplied by electromagnetic waves emanating from the second device.
70. The system according to Claim 9, wherein the electromagnetic waves are radio frequency waves
71. The system according to Claim 66, wherein the power is supplied by pressure pulses emanating from the second device.
72. The system according to Claim 72, wherein the pressure pulses are acoustic waves.
73. The system according to Claim 66, wherein the power is supplied by direct electrical contact between the first and second devices.
74. The system according to Claim 66, wherein the power is supplied by inductive coupling between the first and second devices.
75. The system according to Claim 66, wherein the second device activates the first device from a dormant state to an active state, thereby permitting communication between the first and second devices
76. The system according to Claim 75, wherein the communication between the first and second devices is via electromagnetic waves.
77. A particle detection system, comprising:
a tubular member interconnected in a tubular string;
a particle sensor configured for detecting flow of particles through the tubular member;
a first communication device connected to the particle sensor;
and a tool received in the tubular string, the tool including a second communication device, and communication being established between the first and second devices, the second device activating the first device from a dormant state to an active state, thereby permitting communication between the first and second devices, the communication between the first and second devices being via electromagnetic waves, the electromagnetic waves being radio frequency waves
78. The system according to Claim 77, wherein the communication between the first and second devices is via pressure pulses
79. The system according to Claim 78, wherein the pressure pulses are acoustic waves.
80 A particle detection system, comprising:
a tubular member interconnected in a tubular string;
a particle sensor configured for detecting flow of particles through the tubular member;
a first communication device connected to the particle sensor;
and a tool received in the tubular string, the tool including a second communication device, and communication being established between the first and second devices, the second device activating the first device from a dormant state to an active state, thereby permitting communication between the first and second devices, the communication between the first and second devices being via inductive coupling between the first and second devices.
81 A particle detection system, comprising a tubular member interconnected in a tubular string;
a particle sensor configured for detecting flow of particles through the tubular member;
a first communication device connected to the particle sensor;
and a tool received in the tubular string, the tool including a second communication device, and communication being established between the first and second devices, the communication between the first and second devices indicating when the tool is within a predetermined distance of an operative position of the tool relative to the item of equipment.
82. The system according to Claim 81, wherein the first device communicates to the second device that the tool is operatively positioned relative to the item of equipment.
83 The system according to Claim 66, wherein the particle sensor detects particle flow axially through the tubular member.
84. A particle detection system, comprising:
a tubular member interconnected in a tubular string;
a particle sensor configured for detecting flow of particles through the tubular member;
a first communication device connected to the particle sensor;
and a tool received in the tubular string, the tool including a second communication device, and communication being established between the first and second devices, the particle sensor detecting particle flow through a sidewall of the tubular member.
