Abstract

A digital television (DTV) receiving system includes an information detector, a resampler, a timing recovery unit, and a carrier recovery unit. The information detector detects a known data sequence which is periodically inserted in a digital television (DTV) signal received from a DTV transmitting system. The resampler resamples the DTV signal at a predetermined resampling rate. The timing recovery unit performs timing recovery on the DTV signal by detecting a timing error from the resampled DTV signal using the detected known data sequence. The carrier recovery unit performs carrier recovery on the resampled DTV signal by estimating a frequency offset value of the resampled DTV signal using the detected known data sequence.

Claims (20)

  1. [1] A digital television (DTV) receiving system comprising:
    an information detector configured to detect a known data sequence periodically inserted in a digital television (DTV) signal;
    a resampler configured to resample the DTV signal ;
    a timing recovery unit configured to perform timing recovery on the DTV signal by detecting a timing error from the resampled DTV signal using the detected known data sequence; and a carrier recovery unit configured to perform carrier recovery on the resampled DTV signal by estimating a frequency offset value of the resampled DTV signal using the detected known data sequence.
  2. [2] The DTV receiving system of claim 1, wherein the timing recovery unit comprises:
    a timing error detector configured to detect the timing error from the resampled DTV signal using the detected known data sequence;
    a loop filter configured to perform low pass filtering on the detected timing error;
    and a numerically controlled oscillator (NCO) configured to control a sampling time of the resampler based on the filtered timing error.
  3. [3] The DTV receiving system of claim 1, wherein the timing recovery unit comprises:
    a first timing error detector configured to detect a first timing error for a first data area of the resampled signal including the known data sequence;
    a second timing error detector configured to detect a second timing error for a second data area of the resampled signal including no known data sequence;
    a multiplexer configured to select any one of the first and second timing errors;
    a loop filter configured to perform low pass filtering on the selected timing error;
    and a numerically controlled oscillator (NCO) configured to control a sampling time of the resampler based on the filtered timing error.
  4. [4] The DTV receiving system of claim 1, wherein the timing recovery unit comprises:
    a buffer configured to temporarily store the resampled DTV signal;
    a decimator configured to decimate the stored DTV signal;
    a timing error detector configured to detect a timing error from the decimated DTV signal using the detected known data sequence;
    a loop filter configured to perform low pass filtering on the detected timing error;

    a numerically controlled oscillator (NCO configured to control a sampling time of the resampler based on the filtered timing error.
  5. [5] The DTV receiving system of claim 1, wherein the timing error is detected by calculating correlation between the detected known data sequence and a reference data sequence.
  6. [6] The DTV receiving system of claim 5, wherein the timing error is detected by calculating a correlation value between an entire portion of the known data sequence and an entire portion of the reference data sequence.
  7. [7] The DTV receiving system of claim 5, wherein the timing error is detected by calculating correlation values between a plurality of divided portions of the known data sequence and a plurality of divided portions of the reference data sequence, respectively.
  8. [8] The DTV receiving system of claim 1, wherein the timing error is detected by calculating a correlation value between two known data sequences detected by the information detector.
  9. [9] The DTV receiving system of claim 8, wherein the correlation value is calculated in a frequency domain.
  10. [10] The DTV receiving system of claim 2, wherein the timing error is detected by calculating a correlation value between two consecutive known data sequences detected by the information detector.
  11. [11] A method of processing a digital television (DTV) signal in a DTV
    receiving system, the method comprising:
    detecting a known data sequence which is periodically inserted in a digital television (DTV) signal;
    resampling the DTV signal in a resampler;
    performing timing recovery on the DTV signal by detecting a timing error from the resampled DTV signal using the detected known data sequence; and performing carrier recovery on the resampled DTV signal by estimating a frequency offset value of the resampled DTV signal using the detected known data sequence.
  12. [12] The method of claim 11, wherein performing timing recovery on the DTV
    signal comprises:
    detecting the timing error from the resampled DTV signal using the detected known data sequence;
    performing low pass filtering on the detected timing error information; and controlling a sampling time of the resampler based on the filtered timing error.
  13. [13] The method of claim 11, wherein performing timing recovery on the DTV
    signal comprises:

    detecting a first timing error for a first data area of the resampled signal including the known data sequence;
    detecting a second timing error for a second data area of the resampled signal including no known data sequence;
    selecting any one of the first and second timing errors;
    performing low pass filtering on the selected timing error; and controlling a sampling time of the resampler based on the filtered timing error.
  14. [14] The method of claim 11, wherein performing timing recovery on the DTV
    signal comprises:
    temporarily storing the resampled DTV signal in a buffer;
    decimating the stored DTV signal;
    detecting a timing error from the decimated DTV signal using the detected known data sequence;
    performing low pass filtering on the detected timing error; and controlling a sampling time of the resampler based on the filtered timing error.
  15. [15] The method of claim 11, wherein the timing error is detected by calculating cor-relation between the known data sequence and a reference data sequence.
  16. [16] The method of claim 15, wherein the timing error is detected by calculating a correlation value between an entire portion of the known data sequence and an entire portion of the reference data sequence.
  17. [17] The method of claim 15, wherein the timing error is detected by calculating cor-relation values between a plurality of divided portions of the known data sequences and a plurality of divided portions of the reference data sequences, re-spectively.
  18. [18] The method of claim 11, wherein the timing error is detected by calculating a correlation value between two known data sequences detected from the DTV
    signal.
  19. [19] The method of claim 18, wherein the correlation value is calculated in a frequency domain.
  20. [20] The method of claim 11, wherein the timing error is detected by calculating a correlation value between two consecutive known data sequences detected from the DTV signal.
