Abstract

A valve is disclosed and can include a valve body having a central bore for passage of fluid there through and a longitudinal axis.
The valve can also include a seal installed within the valve body along the central bore. The seal can include a first seal member (152) having an annular ring portion (156) and a hub portion (158) extending from the annular ring portion. The seal can also include a second seal member (154) including an annular ring configured to engage a distal end of the hub portion and create a sealing engagement between the hub portion and the annular ring when a compressive force is applied to the first and the second seal members.

Claims (15)

1. A valve, comprising:
a valve body defining a central bore for passage of fluid there through, the central bore having a longitudinal axis;
a seal installed within the valve body along the central bore, wherein the seal comprises:
a first seal member comprising an annular ring portion and a hub portion extending from the annular ring portion; and a second seal member including an annular ring configured to engage a distal end of the hub portion and create a sealing engagement between the hub portion and the annular ring when a compressive force is applied to the first and the second seal members.
2. The valve of claim 1, wherein the annular ring portion of the first seal member includes an outer diameter, ODR, wherein the hub portion of the first seal member includes an outer diameter, ODH, and wherein ODR is greater than ODH.
3. The valve of claim 1 or 2, further comprising a disc installed perpendicularly within the seal, wherein the disc is movable between a first position in which fluid communication through the seal is blocked and a second position in which fluid communication through the seal is permitted.
4. The valve of claim 3, further comprising an actuator rod extending through the valve body and into the seal wherein the actuator rod is coupled to the disc and wherein the actuator rod is rotatable to rotate the disc within the seal.
5. The valve of claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the distal end of the hub portion of the first seal member and the annular ring of the second seal member have a complementary engagement structure.
6. The valve of claim 5, wherein the complementary engagement structure includes a tongue and groove structure.
7. The valve of claim 6, wherein the complementary engagement structure is rectangular, wedge-shaped, K-shaped, or a combination thereof.
8. The valve of claim 5, wherein the complementary engagement structure includes a groove and a generally curved flange.
9. A seal assembly, the seal assembly comprising:
a first seal member having an annular ring portion and a hub portion; and a second seal member include an annular ring, wherein the first seal member and the second seal member include a complementary engagement structure configured to create a seal interface within a valve in which the seal assembly is installed.
10. The seal assembly of claim 9, wherein the complementary engagement structure is configured to provide the sealing interface when the seal assembly is compressed along a longitudinal axis.
11. The seal assembly of claim 9 or 10, wherein the seal comprises a generally rigid, corrosion resistant material.
12. The seal assembly of claim 9, 10 or 11, further comprising a first interior rib extending from an interior surface of the hub portion and a second interior rib extending from the interior surface of the hub portion opposite the first interior rib.
13. The seal assembly of claim 12, wherein the first interior rib and the second interior rib form an angle, .alpha., with respect to an axis through a mid-plane of the seal assembly.
14. The seal assembly of claim 9, 10, 11 or 12, wherein the hub of the first seal member defines a width, W, wherein a central axis of the butterfly valve lies approximately along the midpoint ~ 2% of W, wherein a seal interface established by the first seal member and the second seal member can be spaced a distance, D, from the central axis, and wherein D = 0.5 x W.
15. The seal assembly of claim 9, 10, 11, 12 or 14, wherein the hub portion of the seal includes a disc engagement thickness, T DE, and an edge hub thickness, T HE, and wherein T DE/T HE is less than or equal to 0.8.
