子组件24被粘贴在微型模件26上。该模件26与TAB薄片22紧密配合共同构成了外罩模件28的墨仓30的底(图11)。墨仓30在外罩模件28的顶36上以外扩的形式开口形成一个注液漏斗38。一个柔软有弹性并不沾水的套环40安置在每个漏斗38之上。套环40密封地与墨盒16的墨盒模件32的互补填充结构或喷嘴42(图7)啮合在一起为芯片18输送墨水。
夹件或夹子44从外罩模件28的顶部36突出,把外罩模件28夹在墨盒16上。
TAB薄片22向上延伸到外罩模件28一个弯曲的侧壁46上并粘贴在合适的位置。外罩模件28的侧壁46为TAB薄片22的数据和电源接触板48(图8)提供了一个合适的承载面。
子组件24、微型模件26和外罩模件28共同构成了Memjet打印头模块12。多个这样的打印头模块12首尾相连以一定的角度连接在墨盒16上。墨盒16充当模块12的载体并提供四色墨管(图7),也就是青、洋红、黄和黑(CMYK)。四种颜色的墨水通过外罩模件28上各自的漏斗38输送到每个打印头模块12。
打印头模块12以成角度叠加的方式相互衔接在一起,参考图2和4。这就允许Memjet芯片18对角地叠加在一起,构成连续的从0.8英寸到72英寸(用于宽幅打印机)和更长的打印头长度。
Memjet芯片18长21.0mm,宽0.54mm,高0.3mm。一个高0.3mm的保护性的硅质喷嘴帽连接在Memjet芯片18的上表面。
每个Memjet喷嘴包括一个连接在活动的喷嘴组件上的热弹性传动装置。传动装置具有两个在结构上独立的钛氮化物(TiN)层,它在一端的硅基层上连接着一个电枢,在另一端连接着一个硅氮化物杆/喷嘴组件。顶部的TiN或“加热器”层形成了一个电路,它通过氮化物与墨水绝缘。活动的喷嘴置于从硅基层伸出的墨水供给通道上。墨水供给通道通过TiN密封圈沿着底片上的洞的外围密封。TiN圈和氮化物喷嘴组件之间的墨水泄露由于在1微米缝隙之间的表面张力的作用而被阻止。
一个1毫秒3伏27毫安的保险丝(85毫微焦耳)提供在加热层的接线端,通过焦耳加热增加加热器的温度。瞬态热区使得加热层膨胀,由于其他TiN层的存在使得加热层在结构上减轻产生“偏离平面”的挠曲。
传动装置末梢的挠曲被控制杆放大并迫使喷嘴组件朝向硅质的墨水供给通道。喷嘴组件的移动结合墨水供给通道中墨水的惯性和粘滞拖拽产生了一个正压区,它使得一个小墨滴喷出。
瞬态热区导致了Memjet的运动。被动的TiN层在小墨滴喷出后仅仅由热传导来加温。热能通过热传导消耗在底片和墨水中,使传动装置回到“休眠”的位置。热能通过喷出的小墨滴从打印头芯片消散。墨滴的喷出过程共需5毫秒。喷嘴在20毫秒内重新填墨并散热,允许50KHz的墨滴喷射率。
Memjet芯片18的每种颜色在每英寸上具有1600个喷嘴。这允许真正的1600dpi彩色打印,生成完全照片级的图像质量。一个21mm的CMYK芯片18具有5280个喷嘴。每个喷嘴具有一个移位寄存器、一个转换寄存器、一个激活门、一个驱动晶体管。十六根数据线驱动芯片18。
Memjet芯片18的一些配置需要一个喷嘴罩。这个喷嘴罩是一个显微机械加工的硅部件,它是一个薄片,粘接在薄片的前表面。它可以保护Memjet喷嘴接触外部的粒子和固体,并允许包封操作来提供更高的保护。
TAB薄片22是标准的单面TAB薄片,由聚酰亚胺和铜层组成。Memjet芯片18提供了一个狭槽。TAB薄片22包括镀金的接触板48,它连接着组件10的接线槽印刷电路板(PCB)54(图13)和组件10的母线58及60的母线触点56(图14),为芯片18获得数据和电力。凸出的接线是凸出的金属块,与Memjet芯片18的接线板相连。
在第一个实施例中,TAB薄片22和全部的芯片侧壁之间的结点由密封胶施加在它的前表面。然后子组件24被翻过来并在它的背面结点上施加密封胶。这样做完全把芯片18和TAB薄片22密封在一起,以保护电路接触,因为TAB薄片构成了打印头模块12的墨仓30的底。
接线槽PCB54是单面元件,它通过接触板为每个打印头模块12的TAB薄片22提供数据连接,它与每个TAB薄片22上的相应触点48连接。接线槽PCB54沿着外罩模件28弯曲的侧壁46与TAB薄片22以衔接的形式安装。接线槽PCB54通过压力板62(图7)保持与每个打印头模块12的TAB薄片电路接触。PCB54在墨盒16的墨盒模件32的相应弯曲的侧壁64下并沿着它包装。对着侧壁64的PCB54的一部分带有一个62针的连接器66。
墨盒16的墨盒模件32的侧壁64弯曲的角度与外罩模件28的侧壁46一致,这样,当打印头模块12连接到墨盒16时,TAB薄片22的触点48可以接触PCB54的触点。这个角度也使得拆除模块12更容易。接线槽PCB54通过可变形的压力板62的作用可以“弹起来”,压力板62允许施加正压力并保持接线槽PCB54的触点和TAB薄片22之间的接触。
微型模件26是一个精确的注塑模件,由乙缩醛型材料制成。它可以容放Memjet芯片18(已经与TAB薄片相连接)并与外罩模件28密切配合。
位于微型模件26底面的肋条元件68(图8)当它和TAB薄片22连接在一起时为TAB薄片22提供了支撑。TAB薄片22构成了打印头模块12的底,由于肋条的间距,它的结构足够统一来支撑一个接线薄片。TAB薄片22的边焊在外罩模件28的底面上。
芯片18连接在100微米宽的肋条70上,它超过了微型模件26的长度。肋条70之间形成的通道72把最后的墨水填充到Memjet芯片18的喷嘴中。
微型模件26的设计允许Memjet芯片18当其衔接成一条直线时物理叠加。因为Memjet芯片18形成了一条连续的具有很大容差的条带,它们可以数字化地调整来生成需要的打印图案,而不是依赖非常紧密的容差模件和特殊材料来实现相同的功能。模块12的间距是20.33mm。
微型模件26安装在外罩模件28的内部,微型模件26连接在一组从外罩模件28的顶部36延伸出来的垂直肋条74上。
外罩模件28是一个两色的精确的注塑模件,它由一个注塑的硬塑料壳(乙缩醛)和软弹性部件(合成橡胶)构成。这个模件与连接在微型模件26上的子组件24接合。当连接在合适的位置时,包含子组件24和微型模件26的子组件基底与外罩模件28的垂直肋条紧密配合来形成密封的墨仓30。
如上所述,每个仓30的开口都有一个套环40环绕。这些柔软的套环40由憎水的、弹性的化合物制成,它密封了墨盒16的墨水喷头42。外罩模件28上的夹件44使模块12参考墨盒16定位。
墨盒16包含墨盒模件32和一个盖模件76(图7)。墨盒模件32是一个简单的具有盖模件76的四仓注塑模件,盖模件连接在顶部为每个彩色墨水形成一个密封的环境。墨水供给管78(图12)安排在盖模件76的一端,与墨盒模件32之间的墨水通道相通。错综复杂的、憎水的气孔82位于盖模件76的另一端。这些气孔82用于在装料过程中排空通道80。当装料后,这些气孔82用自粘薄片84来覆盖。
盖模件76具有热桩88,(设计用来熔化并固定模件到另一部分的销),它定位并固定墨盒16处于冲压的金属片机架14中。另外的热桩90沿着墨盒模件32排列。如图1,一旦墨盒16被固定在机架14中,当变形后这些桩就被显示出来。
接收构件92沿着墨盒模件32的边形成,用于接收打印头模块12的夹子44。
如前所述,墨盒模件32的侧壁64为接线槽PCB54和数据连接器66提供了安装区域。墨盒模件32也带有元件便于V-和V+母线58和60分别准确安装。
金属机架14是一个精确冲压、折叠并镀金的金属机架,用来把打印头组件10安装到不同的产品中。墨盒16通过热桩88和90热植入到机架14中。机架14包括一个用机械力复原的边94。机架14可以很容易地定制以便打印头的安装和任何其他部件的增加。它也可以沿长度方向伸展来为更宽幅的打印提供多重的打印头组件10的阵列。
狭槽97位于机架14上,用来接近模块12的夹子44,以便把模块12从墨盒16上取下,使得可以更换一个或多个模块12。
细指条状的金属条母线58和60连接各自的V-和V+到每个打印头模块12的TAB薄片22上。两个母线58和60由一个绝缘条96(图14)分开。接线槽、指状的触点56沿每条母线58、60的一边排列。触点56与每个模块12的TAB薄片22的接触板48电路连接来为模块12提供电力。触点56通过一个位于墨盒模件32底面的小肋条分开。
包含母线58、60和绝缘条96的母线子组件98安装在墨盒16的墨盒模件32的侧壁的底面。子组件通过压力板62固定在侧壁64和外罩模件28的侧壁46之间。
一个扁头连接器100固定在母线58的突起102上用来接地。两个扁头连接器104安装在母线60相应的突起106上用来提供电力。其布置为,当装配子组件98时,扁头连接器104被安装在扁头连接器100的对面。在这种方式下,当安装组件10时,为组件10供电的极性接反的可能性降低了。在打印头模块12的安装或替换过程中,这些是第一个要断开的元件,以便切断模块12的电源。
为了装配打印头组件10,Memjet芯片18通过选择和放置自动仪在进行了飞行干燥测试,它也把薄片切成小片并传送芯片18到一个TAB薄片连接区域。当一个芯片18被接受,TAB薄片22被选择、连接并粘贴到芯片18。
接受芯片18并有粘结剂20的TAB薄片22上的狭槽,它的功能也作为一种密封剂,绕着芯片18的上表面和下表面的各个边粘贴。这个操作在芯片18的侧壁形成了完全的密封。连接线在这个过程中也被封装了。
Memjet芯片18和TAB薄片22子组件24被传送到另一个包含有微型模件26的机器用于安装和连接。粘结剂被粘贴到微型模件26的通道72中的小肋条70的底面和位于TAB薄片22正下面的底面肋条68的啮合面上。子组件24与微型模件26紧密结合在一起。
包含微型模件26和子组件24的微型模件子组件并传送到一个包含外罩模件28的机器上。当微型模件子组件和外罩模件28被连接在一起时,TAB薄片22被密封在外罩模件28的底面形成一个密封的单元。TAB薄片22进一步绕着外罩模件28并粘在它的侧壁46上。
芯片18、TAB薄片22、微型模件26和外罩模件28装配形成一个完整的具有四个密封的独立墨仓30和墨水入口38的Memjet打印头模块12。
墨盒模件32和外罩模件76连接在一起形成一个完整的密封单元。密封薄片84部分地放置在空气排出孔82上,这样不全部密封孔82。当完成在墨盒16中填装墨水时,孔82被薄片84密封。然后,墨盒16被固定并热植入到金属机架14中。
具有软垫粘结剂垫背的接线槽PCB54的全部长度都被连接到墨盒16弯曲的侧壁64上。接线槽PCB54终止在数据连接器66,它安装在墨盒16的侧壁64的外表面。
传动装置的V-和V+接线由两个相同的金属指条母线58和60传送到每个模块12。母线子组件98安装在墨盒模件32的侧壁64的底面的接线槽PCB54的上方。母线58、60和绝缘条96通过从墨盒模件32的侧壁64凸出的销(没有标出)相对于墨盒模件32定位,销穿过母线58、60和绝缘条96上的定位孔108被接收。
Memjet打印头模块12被夹在墨盒模件32的顶板上。模块12和墨盒模件32之间的精确对齐没有必要,因为在最终的QA测试中,整个打印头组件10将承受每个芯片18的数字化的调节。
每个打印头模块的TAB薄片22当它被夹在墨盒16上时,与接线槽PCB54和母线58、60相连。为了使打印头模块12与墨盒16断开连接,用户工具可以从上插入金属机架14上合适的狭槽97。工具“手指”滑下墨盒模件32的壁,在这里它们接触到外罩模件28的夹子44。进一步的压力把四个夹子44弄弯,使其脱离与接收形成物92的啮合,使打印头模块12脱离墨盒16。
为了用墨水填充墨盒16,软管110(图3)连接到管78上,从供给处来的过滤过的墨水被填充到每个通道80。墨仓外罩模件76的另一端上的开口82用于排放空气,在灌注过程中。开口82具有曲折的穿过表面的墨水路径,它连接到内部的墨水通道80。在灌注过程中,这些墨水路径部分地被连接的透明塑料薄片84密封。当墨水在墨水通道80中时,薄片84用来指示墨水,所以当灌注完成后,它们可以被完全除去。
为了电路连接和测试,电源和数据连接被连接到接线槽PCB54。然后,开始最终的测试来校准打印头模块12。在成功完成测试的基础上,Memjet打印头组件10在底面用塑料密封薄片密封打印头模块12,特别是,它的芯片18,直到产品被安装。
需要注意,在相邻的模块12之间有一个重叠。测试过程的一部分确定相邻芯片18的重叠部分的喷嘴哪些要被使用。
如图15,模块化的Memjet打印头组件10的设计允许它们以首尾相连的形式衔接。因此,有可能建立一个有效地、无限长度的多重打印头系统112。只要每个打印头组件10充满墨水,完全有可能考虑几百英尺宽的打印头。这意味着Memjet打印机产品宽度的限制仅仅在于想要的打印介质的最大生产尺寸。
图15显示了一个多重Memjet打印头系统112如何配置来用于宽幅打印。可替换的墨仓114,一种颜色一个,被插入到中间的墨盒116中,墨盒116总是有过滤过的墨水供给。软管118从墨仓118的底面出来,连接到每个打印头组件10的墨水入口管78上。
本领域技术人员可以明白,可以进行任何变化或修改而不脱离本发明的范围和要旨。因此,本实施例可以被看作是一个例子而不是限制。

Claims (9)

1.一种打印头系统,它包括一组首尾相连的打印头组件,每个打印头组件包括一组打印头模块,打印头模块首尾相连地排列并与组件的纵轴方向成一定角度,这样,相邻模块的打印头芯片在与通过组件的打印介质的运动方向相横切的方向上相互重叠。
2.如权利要求1所述的系统,其特征在于,在每个组件的一端的打印头模块有一个突出部分,它从组件的一端突出,在组件另一端的打印头模块有一个凹陷的部分,用来容纳位于相邻组件一端的打印头模块的突出部分。
3.如权利要求2所述的系统,其特征在于,打印头模块包含一个微型的电动机械打印头芯片,它包括多个喷墨嘴,相邻模块的重叠部分的喷嘴可以根据选择的数位来使用。
