Description
本发明涉及广播系统的领域。具体来说,本发明涉及收集和提供观众对广播的反馈的技术。
近年来,电视、无线电和互联网广播节目的种类和数量显著增加。如在当前,数字电缆系统和卫星天线系统提供一天二十四个小时的数百个频道的广播节目。类似地,因特网提供对无数联机交互式事件的存取。即使使用常规的天线也会有几十个电视和无线电频道充斥在许多商用电波中。通过所有观看、收听和交互选项进行挑选可能会耗时且烦人。
广播节目指南会有所帮助,但大部分广播节目指南只以时隙和频道的方式列出广播。由于有数百个频道,包括免费频道、各类付费频道、按次付费频道、视频点播频道等,所以广播节目指南变得非常长且令人烦乱。观众可能要花费大量时间来阅读给定时隙中的一系列广播并且辨别出观众实际上可获得哪些广播。
很多时候,观众根据情况只能选择轻按(flip)一些频道或大量的频道,直到他或她找到他或她能够接受的广播为止。当观众失去兴趣时,他或她会轻按其它一些频道,无目的地寻找感兴趣的节目。同时,广告业主、电视供应商和其它广播节目供应商希望他们的节目影响尽可能多的观众。可选择数百个频道的观众无目的地轻按频道很容易错过吸引人的广播或广告。因此,无论是观众还是广播节目供应商都希望能够识别可能会使特定观众感兴趣的广播。
一种预测特定观众将有多大的可能性能够找到感兴趣的广播的方法是检查以前观众的反馈;特别是具有类似特征的以前观众。例如,如果85%的年龄在25到35的女性观众非常喜欢一个广播,则年龄在25到35的绝大部分以后的女性观众同样会欣赏该广播。数年来,广播节目供应商已使用了焦点群(focus group)、调查、尼尔森等级(Nielsonrating)等来设法预测观众的偏好,从而使广播吸引尽可能多的观众或者以某些观众为目标。但这些方法有它们的局限性。例如,这些方法对于观众寻找最可能使它们感兴趣的广播来说是没有什么帮助的。因此,无论是观众还是广播节目供应商都需要一种改进的方法和设备来根据观众的特征收集和提供观众对广播的反馈。
本发明提供一种收集和提供观众对广播的反馈的改进方法和设备。根据本发明的一个方案,一个广播的收视率(rating)由服务器系统产生。该收视率至少部分基于观众对该广播的反馈,并且收视率表示以后潜在的观众对该广播感兴趣的可能性。之后存取该收视率以预测以后潜在的观众是否对该广播感兴趣。
根据本发明的另一个方案,收视率由服务器系统提供给一个娱乐系统,并且在该娱乐系统中可根据服务器系统产生的收视率来选择广播进行观看。在一个实施例中,观众反馈在娱乐系统中通过响应反馈征询表接收。

图1示出了本发明的一个实施例。本发明收集观众对广播的反馈并且至少部分基于该观众反馈以及在某些实施例中基于观众的特征产生该广播的收视率。收视率表示以后潜在的观众对同一个广播或系列广播中的其它广播感兴趣的可能性。收视率信息可向多个观众收集并且以后潜在的观众和广播节目供应商可以使用。根据观众的特征,一个广播可具有几种类型的收视率。例如,在一个实施例中,一个广播的收视率可表示回应的5279个4到6岁的儿童中93%的人喜欢该广播并愿意再看一次,回应的2497个25到35岁的成人中23%的人喜欢该广播并愿意推荐给儿童,回应的238个超过75岁的成人中6%的人喜欢该广播并愿意推荐给儿童,如此等等。
正如下面将详细描述地,图1的娱乐系统100表示种类繁多的音频、视频和交互式媒体系统。在系统控制器110的控制下,通过提供征询表115并接收观众反馈120,娱乐系统100收集来自观众130的关于广播的观众反馈。广播可包括范围广泛的广播节目,包括新闻摘要、情景喜剧、电影、纪录片、商业广告和联机交互式事件等。

多个同时的观众的观众特征也可相互参考。各种集合技术可用于组合收视率。例如,在一个实施例中,如果一个观众的特征与几个收视率的分类相匹配,则可针对特定的广播使用收视率的加权平均。在一个例子中,观众特征与三个分类相匹配。在分类A中,500人中的50%对该特定广播的回答的肯定的。在分类B中,2000人中的75%的回答是肯定的。在分类C中,200人中的90%的回答是肯定的。对于这种特定的收视率分类的集合来说,该广播的加权平均是71.481%的回答是肯定的。

作为响应,系统控制器110识别该广播。在一个实施例中,当前正在观看的广播被识别。另外,该广播也可通过提示观众从新近观看的广播清单中识别该广播来识别。接着,系统控制器110可存取一个存储媒体以检索该广播的专用征询表,如果有的话,或存取该广播的普通征询表。该存储媒体可本地存储数百个征询表,它们与广播节目指南一起从广播节目指南服务器170下载。另外,系统控制器110也可在接收到反馈请求时存取广播节目指南服务器170以下载征询表。
在图示的实施例中,该专用征询表包括广播摘要,这样,观众可验证他或她是否在对正确的广播提供反馈。除了反馈问题之外,该征询表还包括用于收集特征信息的问题。一旦完成并提交该征询表,该信息就可发送到广播节目指南服务器170。其它的特征信息也可从诸如观众特征文件中发送。在某些实施例中,在发送到广播节目指南服务器170之前,针对几个广播的几个回答可被存储。
图5示出了可由广播节目服务供应商使用的一种输出格式的实施例。收视率是根据对于广播节目供应商来说重要的某些特征进行分类的。例如,其结果可帮助具有政治动机的广播节目供应商决定是否把广播发送给更多的观众,并且如果这样的话,则根据观众特征发送给以该广播为目标的观众。
该反馈也可被用于在再次播送该广播之前或者更多观众可获得该广播之前对表演进行变化。在一个实施例中,在实况表演期间可向观众收集反馈。在此情况下,可以向该演出的提供者或作者以条形图的格式显示收视率,以便于容易阅读这些收视率。随后,根据该反馈,提供者或作者可选择中途内容修改。
图6示出了一种电影评论征询表的实施例。该征询表包括名称、风格和摘要信息,所有这些信息都可以从广播节目指南中获取,并且可包括在一种通用电影评论征询表中。但是,图示的征询表包括了针对该特定电影的专门问题。例如,广播节目供应商想知道观众是否对具有相同特点的更多电影感兴趣,并且向儿童提出与父母不同的问题。
图7示出了使用由图6的征询表产生的收视率的一种输出格式。在屏幕的最上方,观众指示出一些特征。此处,观众对具有一定教育内容的儿童动画故事感兴趣。观众10岁。其它的特征信息可由观众特征文件提供。屏幕下方列出了从当前可获得的广播中的搜索结果。该清单包括每个广播的名称和摘要以及收视率信息。根据观众的特征,该清单中的第一个广播往往是最可能使观众感兴趣的广播。
在另一些可选的实施例中,征询表和输出屏以弹出(POP-UP)窗、全屏显示、侧条(side-bar)显示的方式显示。征询表和输出屏可包括许多其它形式的广播分类数据,诸如广播识别号、供应商、发行商、广播长度、父母引导警告等。广播识别信息可与广播节目指南一起下载或者从广播节目指南服务器170中单独检索。
图8示出了图1所示典型娱乐系统100的系统元件的框图。系统100包括电视/显示设备802、录象机/重放设备806、数字视盘(DVD,也称作数字多用盘)记录器/重放设备814、音频/视频调谐和/或放大器810、音频重放/记录设备822和光盘(CD)播放器812,它们全都与公用输入/输出(I/O)总线808耦合。可以理解,公用I/O总线808的使用仅仅是为了方便该图的解释,并且路由输入和输出信号的其它一些装置也可被有益地采用。例如,音频输入和输出可使用适当数目的独立音频“插接线”电缆进行路由,视频信号可使用独立的同轴电缆进行路由,并且控制信号可使用双线串行线路或红外(IR)通信信号或射频(RF)通信信号进行路由。在另一个例子中,音频、视频和/或控制信号也可沿着一个或多个总线路由,这些总线可基于通用串行总线规范,修订1.0(1996年1月15日),或高性能串行总线IEEE标准1394,IEEE std.1394-1995,草案8.0v3,1995年12月12日批准。
另外,系统100包括扬声器系统816、话筒818、摄像机820和无线输入/输出控制设备832。在一个实施例中,无线I/O控制设备832是一个娱乐系统遥控单元,它通过IR信号与系统100的元件进行通信。在另一个实施例中,无线I/O控制设备832可以是无线键盘和/或光标控制设备,它通过IR信号或RF信号与系统100的元件通信。在又一个实施例中,无线I/O控制设备832可以是IR或RF遥控设备,字面类似于典型的娱乐系统的遥控器,具有跟踪球或其它光标控制装置的附加特征,从而允许用户确定光标在系统100的显示器上的位置。
在系统100的核心是系统控制器11O,它结合上述本发明的特征并且配置用于控制与系统元件有关的各种特征。如图所示,系统控制器110根据需要通过I/O总线808与系统的每个元件耦合。在一个实施例中,除了I/O总线808之外,或者是取代I/O总线808,系统控制器110可配备无线通信发射机(或收发信机),它能够通过IR信号或IF信号808与系统元件通信。无论什么控制媒体,系统控制器110都可配置用于控制系统100的每个娱乐系统元件,当然应当理解,每个元件也可使用无线I/O设备832单独控制。
系统控制器110检索和存储可从种类繁多的信号源获得的娱乐广播节目信息。在系统100的操作期间,系统控制器110动态配置系统100的工作参数并提供其它值的附加的特征,以增强系统100的用户乐趣,这些特征可以是诸如上述本发明的特征。在一个实施例中,系统控制器110可以是结合本发明教导的计算机系统,这将在下面详细描述。在另一个实施例中,系统控制器110可以是具有必要的处理功率且结合本发明教导的“机顶”盒。无论是什么特定的实施例,系统控制器110均可另称为“会聚系统”,它设计用以把数量众多的娱乐系统与计算平台结合在一起以实现诸如本发明的优良效果。
尽管本发明是在附图所示的典型实施例的上下文中描述的,但根据这些描述,本专业技术人员应当理解,本发明并不限于这些实施例,而是可在其它各种实施例中实施。相应地,本发明的创新特征也可在比图8所示系统复杂性高或低的系统中实施。例如,可在系统100中增加设备,或从系统100中去除设备(例如,摄像机820、话筒818、DVD记录器/重放设备814等)。
如图8所示,系统100可配置用于接收来自种类繁多的各种信号源的音频/视频广播节目输入。在一个实施例中,系统100接收来自下面信号源的全部或任意之一的广播节目输入:有线广播824、卫星广播826(例如通过卫星的抛物面天线)、广播网络834的甚高频(VHF)或特高频(UHF)射频通信(例如通过架空天线)、和/或电话/计算机网络接口828。另外,本专业技术人员应当理解,有线广播输入824、卫星广播输入826和VHF/UHF输入834可包括模拟和/或数字广播节目。另外,音频/视频广播节目经系统100的重放设备(DVD记录器/重放设备814)而从CD-ROM、DVD或其它数字或模拟存储设备中接收。因特网、娱乐网或其它网络也可通过接口828提供音频/视频广播节目。
除了广播节目输入之外,系统100还配备有若干通用控制输出830,它们可配置用于控制任意数量的设备。例如,在一个实施例中,当系统控制器804配置系统100播放一个电影时,它也可以使房间中的灯光变暗至预定的程度以进一步增强观看的环境。允许计算设备控制诸如光线、恒温设置和其它室内器具(例如通过室内的电线)的控制电路在相关技术中是熟知的,因而不再进行描述。
除了结合本发明的上述教导之外,系统控制器110往往表示相关技术中已知的范围更广的计算设备。这种计算设备的一个例子是台式计算机系统,配备有高性能的微处理器、如Pentium处理器、PentiumPro处理器,或PentiumII处理器,这些处理器由加利福尼亚州的Santa Clara的Intel公司生产并且通常可从其获得。这种计算设备的另一个例子是因特网的“应用”设备,如可从新泽西州的Park Ridge的索尼电子公司或Tennessee,Knoxville的菲利普消费电子公司获得的WebTVTM因特网终端。可以理解,系统控制器110的外壳大小和结构可以改变,从而允许其更好的配合系统100。
还应当理解,图8所示的几种娱乐系统元件可被有益地组合。例如,系统控制器110可结合到电视/显示设备802、DVD记录器/重放设备814或音频/视频调谐器和放大器810中。
图9示出了适于本发明使用的计算设备的一个实施例。根据一个实施方案,图1的系统控制器110是图9的计算设备900。在图9所示的实施例中,设备900包括处理器902和高速缓冲存储器904,如图所示它们彼此耦合。另外,设备900还包括高性能输入/输出(I/O)总线906和标准I/O总线908。主桥接器910使处理器902连接高性能I/O总线906,而I/O总线桥接器912使两个总线906和908彼此耦合。耦合总线906的是网络/通信接口924和系统存储器914。耦合总线908的是海量存储器920、键盘和指向设备922和I/O端口926。总之,这些元件往往表示类型广泛的硬件系统,包括但不限于基于加利福尼亚州的Santa Clara的Intel公司生产的Pentium处理器、PentiumPro处理器,或PentiumII处理器的通用计算机系统。
在一个实施例中,各种电子设备也可与高性能I/O总线906耦合。如图所示,模拟调谐器/数字卫星/电缆设备928也与高性能I/O总线906耦合以允许设备900“调谐至”各种广播节目输入频道。
这些元件902-928执行它们在相关技术中已知的传统功能。特别是,网络/通信接口924用于在设备900和种类繁多的任意一种传统网络之间提供通信,这些网络可以是以太网、令牌环、因特网等。可以理解,接口924的电路根据设备900正在耦合的网络类型而定。
海量存储器920用于为执行上述功能的广播节目指令和数据提供永久存储器,而系统存储器914用于为处理器902执行的广播节目指令和数据提供临时存储器。I/O端口926是一个或多个串行和/或并行通信端口,用于在可耦合设备900的其它外围设备之间提供通信。
可以理解,设备900的各种元件可以重新排列。例如,高速缓冲存储器904可以是具有处理器902的单片缓存器。另外,缓存器904和处理器902可打包在一起以作为“处理器模块”,其中处理器902被称作“处理器的核心”。而且,本发明的某些实施方案并不需要包括上述的所有元件。例如,海量存储器920、键盘和指向设备922和/或网络/通信接口924可不包括在设备900中。另外,耦合标准I/O总线908的所示外围设备可耦合高性能I/O总线906;另外,在一些实施方案中只有一根总线,设备900的元件与这根总线耦合。而且,其它元件可包括在设备900中,如另外的处理器、存储设备、总线或存储器。
在一个实施例中,本发明作为由图9所示设备900运行的一系列软件程序来实施。这些软件程序包括由硬件系统中的处理器执行的多个或系列指令,处理器可以是图9所示的处理器902。最初,系列指令存储在诸如海量存储器920的存储设备中。应当理解,系列指令也可使用任意的传统存储媒体存储,如软盘、CD-ROM、磁带、DVD、激光盘、ROM、快速存储器等。还应当理解,系列指令不必本地存储,而是可以通过网络/通信接口924从诸如网络服务器的远程存储设备中检索。这些指令可从诸如海量存储器920的存储设备中复制到存储器914,并在随后由处理器902存取和执行。在一个实施方案中,这些软件程序使用C++编程语言书写。但应当理解,这些程序可使用种类繁多的任意一种编程语言来实施。
在另一些可选的实施例中,本发明在分立的硬件或固件中执行。例如,一个或多个专用集成电路(ASIC)可被编程以执行本发明的功能。在另一个例子中,本发明可在插入到图9所示硬件系统900的附加电路板的一个或多个ASIC中实施。
在一个实施例中,硬件系统900包括用以通过网络/通信接口924从系统存储器914、海量存储器920或广播节目指南服务器170中检索征询表的控制电路。处理器902或一些其它形式的硬件设备如数字信号处理器(DSP)或一个或多个ASIC可包括该控制电路。通过响应反馈请求检索征询表。如上所述,反馈请求可在诸如特定广播的结尾或观众点播时自动产生。征询表可使用电视/显示设备802上显示的观众接口经I/O端口926提供给观众130。用户接口也可经扬声器系统816提供,并且可通过电视/显示设备802上的光标控制设备、诸如无线I/O设备832上的小键盘、或通过话筒818的语音识别来接收观众输入。
在阅读前面的描述之后,本专业技术人员应当认识到,其它一些可选的实施例也是可能的。例如,广播节目指南服务器170可以是一种分布式应用,在几个不同区域或娱乐系统的每一个中都具有不同的服务器。在另一个实施例中,广播节目指南服务器170也可与广播节目服务供应商160组合。
在某些实施例中,根据广播类型的不同,并不总是可以公开得到节目的收视率。例如,商业广告的收视率可能仅仅对播送商业广告节目的广播节目供应商可用。而且,广播节目供应商能够请求特定的收视率不可用。例如,如果收视率非常低,则最好播送没有收视率的广播来取代不受欢迎的广播。
因此,描述了用以收集和提供对广播的反馈的方法和设备。鉴于本专业技术人员在阅读前述描述后将会理解本发明的许多变化和改进,因而可以理解,由附图描述和显示的特定实施例并不被认为是限制本发明。因此,对特定实施例细节的参考并不限制权利要求的范围。
Claims (28)
1.一种方法包括:
由服务器系统产生第一广播的收视率,所述收视率至少部分基于观众对第一广播的反馈,并且所述收视率用以表示以后潜在的观众对第一广播感兴趣的可能性;并且
在服务器系统中,提供对第一广播的该收视率的存取,以预测以后潜在的观众对第一广播感兴趣的可能性。
2.根据权利要求1的方法还包括:
接收来自娱乐系统控制器的反馈,所述反馈响应关于第一广播的征询表。
3.根据权利要求1的方法还包括:
从娱乐系统控制器接收提供了对第一广播的反馈的观众的特征信息;
其中所述产生第一广播的收视率至少部分基于对第一广播的反馈和提供了对第一广播的反馈的观众的特征信息;并且
其中以后潜在的观众对第一广播感兴趣的所述可能性根据以后潜在的观众的特征而定。
4.根据权利要求1的方法包括:
通过局域网、广域网、互联网、有线电视线路、双扭线、光纤线路、和射频通信的至少之一经数字传输和模拟传输的至少之一向以后潜在的观众提供该收视率。
5.根据权利要求1的方法包括:
接收一个特定的以后潜在的观众的特征信息;
根据多个广播中的每个广播的广播分类数据与接收到的特征信息的比较来汇编多个广播,所述多个广播中的每一个广播具有一个至少部分根据对相应广播的反馈和提供了对相应广播的反馈的以前各个观众的特征信息而定的收视率;并且
根据基于该特定的以后潜在观众的特征的收视率把多个广播分级。
6.根据权利要求5的方法还包括:
向该特定的以后潜在的观众提供多个广播中的至少是最高分级的广播的确定目标的广告。
7.根据权利要求5的方法还包括:
接收至少一个其它以后潜在的观众的特征信息;
其中所述汇编处理包括把该特定的以后潜在的观众共有的特征信息与广播分类数据相匹配;并且
其中所述分级处理包括根据基于该特定的以后潜在观众和至少一个其它以后潜在的观众所共有的特征的收视率把多个广播分级。
8.一种方法包括:
在一个娱乐系统显示要观看的所选广播,选择根据服务器系统产生并提供给娱乐系统的该广播的收视率而定,所述服务器系统用以至少部分根据来自该广播的以前观众的反馈产生收视率,所述收视率表示以后潜在的观众对该广播感兴趣的可能性。
9.根据权利要求8的方法包括:
把反馈征询表从娱乐系统提供给该广播的以前观众;
在娱乐系统接收来自以前观众的反馈,所述有关该广播的反馈响应该反馈征询表;并且
把该反馈从娱乐系统提供给服务器系统。
10.根据权利要求8的方法还包括:
获得有关以前观众的特征信息,所述服务器系统用以至少部分基于以前观众的反馈和特征信息产生该广播的收视率,所述收视率用以根据以后潜在的观众的特征指示以后潜在的观众对该广播感兴趣的可能性。
11.根据权利要求9的方法,其中所述反馈征询表询问有关以前观众的特征信息,其至少包括年龄、性别、种族、教育程度、地理位置、职业和收入之一。
12.根据权利要求10的方法,其中以前观众的特征信息是以下信息之一:存储在娱乐系统中且具有提供给服务器系统的反馈的信息,以及存储在服务器系统中且根据具有来自娱乐系统的反馈的观众标识符进行检索的信息。
13.根据权利要求8的方法,其中娱乐系统包括娱乐系统控制器,该控制器包括机顶盒、个人计算机和集成到电视的元件之一。
14.根据权利要求8的方法,其中广播包括以下的至少一种:新闻摘要、情景喜剧、纪录片、电影、商业广告和联机交互式事件。
15.根据权利要求8的方法,其中娱乐系统和服务器系统通过局域网、广域网、互联网、有线电视线路、双扭线、光纤线路、和射频通信的至少之一经数字传输和模拟传输的至少之一通信耦合。
16.根据权利要求9的方法,其中征询表在显示设备上以弹出窗、全屏显示和侧条显示之一的形式提供给观众。
17.根据权利要求9的方法,其中提供反馈征询表是以下两种情况之一,观众响应提供反馈的请求以及自动在广播结束时提供。
18.根据权利要求8的方法还包括:
把来自娱乐系统控制器的广播识别数据提供给服务器系统,所述广播识别数据至少包括广播标识符、标题、供应商、发行商、摘要、广播长度、父母引导警告以及一种或多个广播风格之一。
19.根据权利要求8的方法还包括:
提供奖励给以前的观众以便提供观众反馈。
20.根据权利要求9的方法,其中提供反馈征询表、接收反馈和提供反馈针对该广播的其它观众而重复,其中收视率至少部分根据其它观众的反馈而定。
21.一种存储了机器可执行指令的机器可读存储媒体,所述机器可执行指令的执行用以实施一种方法,该方法包括:
由服务器系统产生第一广播的收视率,所述收视率至少部分基于观众对第一广播的反馈,并且所述收视率用以表示以后潜在的观众对第一广播感兴趣的可能性;并且
在服务器系统中,提供对第一广播的该收视率的存取,以预测以后潜在的观众对第一广播感兴趣的可能性。
22.一种存储了机器可执行指令的机器可读存储媒体,所述机器可执行指令的执行用以实施一种方法,该方法包括:
在一个娱乐系统显示要观看的所选广播,选择根据服务器系统产生并提供给娱乐系统的该广播的收视率而定,所述服务器系统用以至少部分根据来自该广播的以前观众的反馈产生收视率,所述收视率表示以后潜在的观众对该广播感兴趣的可能性。
23.一种设备包括:
一个娱乐系统控制器,用于把反馈征询表提供给广播观众,并且从响应反馈征询表的有关该广播的观众接收反馈;并且
所述娱乐系统控制器用以向服务器系统提供观众的特征信息和对该广播的反馈,所述服务器系统用以至少部分根据对该广播的反馈和观众的特征信息产生该广播的收视率,根据以后潜在的观众的特征,所述收视率用以表示以后潜在的观众对该广播感兴趣的可能性。
24.根据权利要求23的设备,其中娱乐系统控制器包括:
控制电路,用以通过响应反馈请求检索来自存储介质的征询表;
观众接口,通过使用该接口,所述控制电路提供检索的征询表给观众;和
通信接口,通过使用该接口,所述控制电路把对该广播的反馈提供给服务器系统。
25.根据权利要求24的设备,其中控制电路至少包括微处理器、数字信号处理器和专用集成电路之一。
26.根据权利要求24的设备,其中观众接口至少包括显示设备和音频输出设备之一,并且至少包括光标控制设备、小键盘和语音识别设备之一。
27.一种设备包括:
服务器系统,用以接收来自娱乐系统控制器的反馈,所述反馈响应广播,并且用以接收提供了对该广播的反馈的观众的特征信息;
所述服务器系统用以至少部分根据观众的特征信息和对该广播的反馈产生该广播的收视率,根据以后潜在的观众的特征,所述收视率用以表示以后潜在的观众对该广播感兴趣的可能性。
28.根据权利要求27的设备,其中服务器系统是集中式和分布式之一。
