Abstract

发明领域
本发明涉及一种具有一个通过一对不对称锥体或圆盘无源地馈给电磁信号的辐射元的全向天线。本发明特别适合于包括无线局域网内发送和接收数据的小型化天线应用。
发明背景
在建筑物内无线局域网(WLAN)应用中很希望使用小型化(low-profile)天线。然而,对于建筑物内的通信应用,在天线被限制为一个很小的机械结构的情况下,在技术上很难平衡高增益和所需天线方向图的要求。
天线设计人员很清楚,天线增益可以通过将辐射元安置在一个诸如接地面之类的大导电面上得到提高。大的接地面还可以支持使天线方向图成为所需的形状。对小型化天线的接地面的一般设计要求是用导电材料形成一个比较大的表面,通常要大于5个波长。可以用该导电材料形成一个完整的表面或者一个孔直径小于0.1波长的栅网。虽然无限大的接地面在理论上提供了一个理想的导电表面,但是传统的小型化天线设计通常面临着现实条件的限制。因此,小型化天线由于室内工作环境的实际限制,接地面尺寸减小,辐射元物理尺寸有限,通常性能受到限制。例如,一个用有源信号直接馈电而且受小型化结构限制的偶极子天线可能增益不足以支持在典型的室内WLAN应用的强多径环境内有效地进行无线通信。
在先前的天线设计中,设计人员通过将层叠锥体和/或盘形部件作为天线装置的一部分获得了附加增益和合乎需要的辐射方向图。传统的天线设计采用了一些锥形或盘形的部件,串接起来以类似于喇叭天线的方式反射电磁能量。另一些先前的天线设计采用一些层叠的双锥形部件形成一个辐射元阵列,通常由一根中央同轴馈线或一个波导分配网络馈电。例如,已经用一些垂直层叠的空心圆锥形部件实现了一种盘锥形天线设计,可以消除信号反射和改善天线带宽。然而,这些先前的天线设计没有显示出针对可用的最差现实条件的小型化天线应用所需的物理性能。

发明内容
本发明由于提供了一种以高增益和所需的输出方向图发送射频(RF)能量的小型化天线,因此通常对于在一个建筑物内无线局域网(WLAN)中的数据传输来说,与现有技术相比具有明显的优越性。概括地说,本发明提供一种具有一个诸如偶极子之类的辐射元的天线,这个辐射元无源地接收一对垂直层叠的不对称形状的锥体部件馈给的信号。这对锥体部件或圆盘形成了一个双锥体装置,由处在间接连接每个锥体顶点形成的接合部的同轴电缆输入集中馈电。这种独创性的天线装置可以安装在标准墙面或已装在天花板上的机壳上,使得这个小型化天线通常位于一个用作接地面的金属机壳盖板之下。
本发明总的来说提供了一种小型化的全向天线系统,用一个不对称的双锥体结构为一个诸如偶极振子之类的辐射元无源地馈电。所馈送的信号可以由一根传统的同轴电缆传送,这根同轴电缆将信号集中地馈给一对安装在偶极振子下面的层叠的导电双锥体部件。同轴电缆用来将来自信号源的电磁能量分配给双锥体部件,同轴电缆的内导体连接到上锥体上,而外导电护套或丝网连接到下锥体上。在天线的垂直面内层叠的双锥体部件在由安装在每个锥体的顶点上的绝缘子形成的公共接合部处间接地连接在一起。也可用一个或多个绝缘子来隔离上、下层叠锥体和垂直安装的偶极振子。偶极振子由上锥体支撑,处在天线的垂直面内。这种结构导致在天线装置的垂直面内将电磁能量无源地耦合给偶极振子。
对于本发明的一种情况,安装在上、下锥体之间的双锥体绝缘子可以提供对上锥体的唯一机械支撑。就本发明的一种情况来说,双锥体绝缘子可以是一个由非导电材料形成的具有UNF 4-40内螺纹和UNC 10-24外螺纹的螺纹绝缘子。双锥体绝缘子的凹形接头插孔接纳上锥体的底端,而它的凸出接头部插入下锥体的一个开孔内,从而形成在上、下锥体部件之间的公共接合部。双锥体绝缘子控制上、下锥体之间的介电常数。由于同轴馈电电缆的内导体穿过双锥体绝缘子内的一个通孔接到上锥体,因此这个绝缘子为低阻抗同轴传输线提供了介电负载。可以理解,这种独创性的天线的各部件不用工具和不需将馈电同轴电缆的内导体焊接到天线本身上就可以组装在一起。这有利于以低成本实现诸如室内应用之类的无线通信应用所需的小型化天线。
对于本发明的一种情况,这种天线可以与装有通信设备的装在天花板上的机壳连接在一起使用。在这种工作环境内,天线的辐射元通常与作为导电接地面的导电机壳盖板垂直安装。由于机壳及其盖板通常沿着室内的天花板安装,天线的辐射元因此头向下地朝向室内。接地面可以由金属天花板片的整表面或栅网状表面提供,用来增大天线增益和在俯仰面内形成具有所需宽度的波束。具体地说,装在天花板上的接地面与辐射元的无源馈电网络组合在一起,使天线在俯仰面内波束宽度减小,同时具有所需的波束翻平特性。所得到的翻平的辐射方向图特别合乎在天花板安装的WLAN应用的需要。

典型实施例详细说明
本发明的天线主要用于在诸如无线局域计算机网(WLAN)之类的需高效率而又不显眼的应用中发送和/或接收射频(RF)信号。虽然这种独创性的天线可以作为一个没有接地面的单极天线,但优选的工作环境是将这种天线的典型实施例与导电的接地面相配合。在这样的优选应用中,天线装置可以安装在一个象天花板片或栅网这样的导电接地面上。对于典型的墙面或天花板安装的天线应用来说,接地面的导电表面通常由一个定制或现有的机壳盖板(例如遮盖HVAC通风口或者音频或寻呼系统的扬声器的那种类型的盖板)提供。
可以理解,接地面有利于增大天线增益或在俯仰面内形成所需宽度的波束。具体地说,接地面与这种独创性的天线配合可以得到一个在俯仰面内波束宽度减小同时具有合乎需要的波束翻平特性的天线。在与由一块导电天花板材料实现的接地面配合时,这种天线通常连接到一个装在天花板机壳上的支持WLAN的通信设备上。因此,在天线与一块作为导电接地面的天花板垂直安装时,天线的辐射元通常头向下指向房间内部。
下面结合附图说明本发明的典型实施例,在这些附图中同样的数字编号所指示的是同样的部件。图1为示出本发明的天线的一个典型实施例的主要部件的分解图。图2和3示出了图1所示的天线的在装配好的情况下的侧视图和剖视图。图4示出了这个典型天线的同轴接口的详细情况,包括一个同轴电缆输入端、一个不导电的适配器、一个底锥体、一个绝缘子、一个插销和一个上锥体。虽然下面结合图1-4主要说明天线在发送时的工作情况,然而熟悉该技术领域的人员根据天线设计的电磁信号的互易原理可以理解该天线也能支持接收操作。因此,对这种独创性的天线的辐射元在支持发送应用中的工作情况的说明也适用于该天线部件在接收电磁信号时的接收应用情况。
如图1-2所示,典型天线20包括一个底锥体1、一个上锥体3和一个偶极振子5。底锥体1和上锥体3形成了一个双锥体组件,具有由这两个锥体的顶点形成的中间接合部,由一个诸如同轴电缆的传输媒体馈给电磁能。可以将一个绝缘子2安置在这个中间接合部,在机械上将锥体1和3分开,从而使这两个锥体的导电表面电隔离。由适配器4形成的绝缘子使上锥体3与垂直安装的由偶极振子5形成的辐射元相连接。底锥体1最好具有大张角的圆锥形状,而上锥体3最好具有小张角的圆锥形状。这对锥体1和3形成的这种优选不对称结构支持在天线20的垂直面内与偶极振子5进行电磁能无源耦合。这对锥体的不对称形状将影响位于锥体接合部的中心馈电点的输入阻抗,同时还支持天线20可以在相对宽的频率范围内工作,而且增大了与偶极振子5的耦合。
底锥体1最好为一个用铝或类似的导电材料制成的大基底截顶锥体。底锥体1的一个典型实现是空心的,有一个开放的基底和一个修平的上表面,上表面中间开有一个孔。绝缘子2也称为双锥体绝缘子,可以安装在底锥体1的外部,通常在这个锥体的中心孔处。底锥体1可以由底座绝缘子7支持,底座绝缘子7用来将天线20安装到所希望的基底结构上。
上锥体3最好是一个颠倒安置的用铝或类似导电金属形成的小张角实心锥体。在上锥体3的较窄的底端部,开有一个中央凹口,其大小适合容纳一个销插座9。在上锥体3的较宽的另一端,开有一个中央凹口,其大小适合容纳一个不导电的圆柱形适配器4的成形底部。圆柱形适配器4使上锥体3与在天线20的垂直面内的杆形偶极振子5相连接。偶极振子5端接一个通常为了安全而用的塑料端帽6。
电磁信号可以由传输媒体承载,传送到位于底锥体1与上锥体3之间的中间接合部。绝缘子2最好具有低介电常数,安装在下锥体1与上锥体3之间的这个接合部。对于这个优选实施例来说,传输媒体用一根包括内导体8a和外护套8b的同轴电缆8实现。开有一个贯穿全长的通孔的圆柱形适配器10设置在底锥体1的空心部分内,接纳同轴电缆8。适配器10建立了外导电护套8b与底锥体1的导电内表面之间的电连接。同轴电缆内导体8a穿过圆柱形适配器10的沿长度方向的通孔,一直伸出到底锥体1的上表面的中心孔外。同轴电缆内导体8a穿过在紧贴底锥体1的中心孔外部的绝缘子2内的中心通孔,端接位于上锥体3的一个凹口内的销插座9。
由绝缘子2隔离的底锥体1和上锥体3以串联方式工作,在有信号有源馈给时在天线装置的垂直面内产生电磁场。具体地说,电磁能量通常通过端接处在上锥体3的销插座9的同轴电缆内导体8a送至上锥体3。由底锥体1和上锥体3组成的垂直层叠阵列产生的电磁场无源地馈给通过插入隔离适配器4垂直安装在锥体阵列上面的偶极振子5。由同轴电缆向一对各具有以各自中心轴对称的形状的锥体馈电的中心性质导致使电磁能量耦合给偶极振子5,产生一个全向辐射方向图。这样将电磁能量无源耦合到偶极振子5(和从偶极振子5耦合电磁能量)最终由该偶极子产生一个发送(接收)信号,具有增益显著增大的特性。
如图3和4所示,同轴电缆外导体或护套与底锥体1的内部的耦合是通过与适配器10的互连来实现的。相反,同轴电缆的内导体8a通过贯穿底锥体1和绝缘子2的通孔后端接安装在上锥体3的顶点的凹口内的销插座9,直接对上锥体3馈电。绝缘子2使同轴电缆内导体8a的导电表面与底锥体1的导电表面相隔离。类似,绝缘子2也使底锥体1的顶点与上锥体3的顶点在机械上分开,从而使这对锥体的导电表面相隔离。通过同轴电缆内导体8a发送给天线20的信号提供直接馈电,激励上锥体3,在上锥体3和接地底锥体1的垂直面内产生一个所希望的电磁场。插在底锥体1与上锥体3之间的绝缘子2使得以由底锥体1和上锥体3的相对不对称所确定的方式在这两个锥形部件之间建立该电磁场。
最好是,绝缘子2或者说双锥绝缘子为上锥体3提供唯一的机械支撑。对于一个典型实施例,绝缘子2用非导电材料形成,具有UNF 4-40内螺纹和UNC 10-24外螺纹。绝缘子2的顶部有一个接纳上锥体3的底端(和销插座9)的凹形接头插孔。绝缘子2的底部有一个可以插入底锥体1的顶部平面内的通孔的凸起接头部。绝缘子2中沿着长度延伸的通孔可以接纳同轴电缆8的内导体。绝缘子2的这种结构控制双锥部件1和3之间的介电常数,形成一个低阻抗同轴传输线的介电负载。
图5A示出了这种对于小型化天线应用的天线装置的另一个实施例。参见图5A,天线装置20′包括一个偶极振子5′,它具有一个开路线圈或者弹簧型结构,而不是图1-4所示的偶极振子5的直杆型结构。这种开路线圈结构在满足为在小型化工作环境内的天线节省现实可用空间要求的同时,为一些暴露的天线应用提供了更好的耐用性。与天线20类似,偶极振子5′通过绝缘的适配器4与上锥体3相连接,而在另一端(即线圈的端点)有一个塑料端帽6。上锥体3的另一端通过绝缘子2间接地与底锥体1的顶端相连接。绝缘子2使这两个锥体的导电表面电隔离,同时支撑它们在天线装置20′的垂直面内层叠在一起。这对形状不对称的锥体1和3可以将电磁能量无源耦合给偶极振子5′和从偶极振子5′耦合电磁能量,情况与上面对天线20所说明的类似。这样,偶极振子5′可以支持天线装置20′的发送和接收操作。
图5B示出了按照这种独创性的天线的另一个典型实施例设计的由一个绝缘子隔离的双锥形部件的组合的部件分解图。注意由配置在下锥体1′与上锥体3′之间的绝缘子2′形成的接合部,内导体8a穿过下锥体1′和绝缘子2′插入上锥体3′的插孔。内导体8a可以通过调整一个位于上锥体3′一侧贴近接纳内导体8a的锥体插孔处的固定螺钉16,连接到上锥体3′上。这样,内导体8a就可在不用焊接的情况下与上锥体3′相连接。固定螺钉插入上锥体3′一侧的螺孔,通过人工拧动在螺孔内的固定螺钉进行调整。内导体8a与上锥体3′的这个非焊接段使天线可以不需要工具进行低成本的组装。
图6A和6B示出了一个安装在典型的WLAN工作环境内进行工作的天线装置,这是在具有一个或多个通过无线通信网与中央计算机通信的无线网接入点的一个设施内部的天花板(或墙面)安装。这种工作环境和天花板/墙面安装情况以及为一个诸如无线网接入点之类的通信设备所配的机壳,在1998年6月5日递交的并已转让给本申请的受让方的美国专利申请N0.09/092,621中有详细说明,该申请全部内容在这里引用为参考。例如,可以将一个无线网接入点封装在建筑结构内部天花板或墙面上安装的机壳内。这个无线网接入点的天线可以是图1-4所示的天线装置20,也可以是图5A的天线装置20′。该天线可以安装到一个位于机壳的盖板上或者在机壳本身内的插座上,通常伸入房间环境内。因此,天线装置20和20′的小型化特征特别适合这种无线通信应用。
如图6A和6B所示,对于典型的天花板安装情况来说,层叠天线装置安装在一块天花板片14的导电表面的中心,天花板片14焊接在一个可以配置在常规的天花板栅格12内的机壳的安装框架13上。这个机壳内通常装有一个与天线连接的诸如无线网接入点之类的计算设备,以支持诸如WLAN应用之类的无线通信。可以用图1-4所示的天线装置20或图5的天线装置20′实现的天线装置11头朝下与天花板片14垂直地安装在它的天花板位置处。天线装置20可以直接安装在天花板片14的外部,也可以安装在机壳内穿过天花板片14上的孔伸出。例如,可以将一根接至安装在机壳内的计算设备的同轴电缆穿过天花板片14上的孔向天线装置11集中馈电。
在天线装置11安装在天花板片14的导电表面上时,由这块材料的金属表面提供的更大的接地面产生一个更强的电磁场。这导致在垂直面内更强地将电磁能量无源耦合给偶极振子5(或偶极振子5′)。与在WLAN应用中现有的天线相比,本发明的典型实施例有着在室内工作环境内最终导致信号质量提高和安装在天花板上不显眼的明显优点。
图7示出了另一个安装在一个保护性天线罩内的天花板安装天线的实施例。如图7所示,天线装置20(或天线装置20′)可以安装在一个天线罩15内,以防止这些天线部件暴露在工作环境内。可以改变天线罩15的非导电表面的形状,使它更加适合具体应用的天线20的形状和更加美观。天线罩15最好采用对于安装在天线罩内的天线装置发送和接收的射频信号基本上是透明的材料制成。
从以上说明中可以看到,本发明提供了一种天线装置,它包括一种将电磁信号无源耦合到一个天线振子和从这个天线振子无源耦合电磁信号的锥体组合。很清楚,以上只是对本发明的一些典型实施例作了说明,可以在不背离如所附权利要求书阐明的本发明的实质和范围的情况下进行多种改变。
Claims (27)
1.一种天线装置,所述天线装置包括:
一个用来在天线装置的垂直面内无源耦合电磁信号的锥体组件;以及
一个在天线装置的垂直面内安装在锥体组件上的天线振子,用来响应由锥体组件无源耦合的电磁信号而辐射电磁信号。
2.在权利要求1中所述的天线装置,其中所述锥体组件包括一个双锥体,这个双锥体具有一个由导电材料形成的底锥体和一个由导电材料形成的上锥体,上锥体在天线装置的垂直面内安装在底锥体上面。
3.在权利要求2中所述的天线装置,其中所述底锥体和上锥体包括两个由导电材料形成的不对称截顶锥体。

23.权利要求1的天线装置,其中所述锥体组件包括一个由导电材料形成的底锥体和一个由导电材料形成的上锥体,上锥体在天线装置的垂直面内安装在底锥体的上面,用一个具有低介电常数、配置在上锥体与底锥体之间的带螺纹绝缘子使上锥体与底锥体电隔离,这个带螺纹绝缘子有一个带螺纹的用来接纳上锥体的底部的凹形接头插孔和一个带螺纹的用来插入一个在底锥体的顶部内的孔的凸形接头部,其中所述带螺纹绝缘子有利于由底锥体和上锥体的组合形成的公共接合部的高效率组装。
24.权利要求23的天线装置,其中所述双锥体绝缘子控制上锥体与底锥体之间的介电常数。
25.权利要求23的天线装置,所述天线装置还包括一根用于将电磁能量传送给天线装置和从天线装置传送电磁能量的同轴电缆,该同轴电缆具有一个内导体和一个外导体,内导体穿过底锥体的孔进入带螺纹绝缘子中沿着长度延伸的通孔以连接到上锥体上,从而为低阻抗同轴传输线路提供一个介电负载。
26.权利要求25的天线装置,其中所述同轴电缆的内导体通过一个配置在内导体的端头的插座销连接到上锥体上,这个插座销在上锥体拧入带螺纹绝缘子的凹形接头插孔时伸入上锥体的一个孔内。
27.权利要求25的天线装置,其中所述同轴电缆的内导体通过由插座销与上锥体的连接形成的直接电连接与上锥体电连接,从而避免了用焊接使同轴电缆与天线装置电连接。
