Description
The present invention relates to a method for distance measurement, in which an object is illuminated with intensity-modulated electromagnetic radiation, and the intensity of the radiation reflected and / or scattered by the object is detected with at least one detector in a time-sensitive or phase-sensitive manner. Moreover, the invention relates to a device for carrying out the method described above.
From the prior art, an optical method for distance or distance measurement is known in which the distance of an object from a reference point on the basis of the duration of an intensity-modulated optical signal is determined by an object to a detector. This measuring method is also referred to as time-of-flight (TOF) measurement or transit time measurement.

If the optical signal used for the measurement is pulsed, then the measurement can be carried out in the manner of a stop clock, while with periodically modulated signals, the propagation time measurement is performed by measuring the phase difference between the intensity modulation of the optical signal and the reference signal.
Since the modulation of the intensity of the electromagnetic radiation or the amplitude of the electrical reference signal is typically periodic, for example a sine or square wave signal or else a periodic sequence of pulses, the TOF measurement with the aid of a TOF detector is usually ambiguous connected. This is due to the fact that due to the periodicity of the signal, the uniqueness of the measurement is limited to a distance which corresponds to the time duration of a period of the signal. If a TOF measurement is to be carried out which has an increased uniqueness range, it is possible, for example, to carry out further measurements with different modulation frequencies or a quasi-periodic signal (pseudo-noise modulation, quasi-noise modulation) can be used. However, such an extended uniqueness range can only be achieved with considerable additional technical effort.
Furthermore, it proves to be disadvantageous that TOF detectors generate an erroneous distance signal as soon as they are illuminated simultaneously with radiation which is reflected by two objects located at different distances from the detector. Such a situation occurs in typical collinear TOF arrangements in which the beam produced by the source is reflected back into itself by the object. If a transparent material, for example a glass pane in the beam path, is located in front of a solid, the surface reflections of the glass pane and the reflection from the surface of the solid body coincide with the same TOF detector element. Even when an object enters the beam path, such simultaneous incidence of two signals with different lengths of propagation time occurs on the TOF detector element and subsequently on the output of a faulty (mixed) signal.
Against the background of the prior art described above, the object of the present invention is to provide an optical measuring method which avoids the aforementioned disadvantages, allows an extended uniqueness range of the measurement and an increased accuracy. Moreover, it is an object of the present invention to provide a device which enables the implementation of an optical distance measurement with extended uniqueness range and increased accuracy.
This object is achieved in that a method for distance measurement is provided in which an object is illuminated with intensity-modulated electromagnetic radiation and the intensity of the reflected and / or scattered by the object radiation with at least one detector is detected run-time or phase-sensitive, wherein at least another optical distance measuring method is used, the further optical distance measuring method being a triangulation method, the at least one detector comprising a two-dimensional array of TOF elements configured as photonic mixer detectors, and the TOF elements, respectively be supplied with an electrical reference signal, which is correlated with the intensity modulation of the electromagnetic radiation, in each case the falling on the TOF element intensity-modulated electromagnetic radiation is mixed with the reference signal u nd wherein the transit time difference between the reference signal and the intensity-modulated electromagnetic radiation is detected.
Embodiments of the present invention are preferred in which the at least one further optical distance measuring method is a triangulation method, a stereo triangulation method or an interferometric method. However, any combination of said methods may be used. Examples of possible combinations are: time-of-flight method with triangulation method and interferometric method or time-of-flight method with stereo triangulation method and interferometric method.
It is expedient if the at least one detector is used both for the transit time or phase-sensitive detection of the intensity-modulated electromagnetic radiation and for the further optical method for distance measurement.
Particularly preferred is an embodiment of the invention in which the at least one detector has at least one TOF element and the TOF element is supplied with an electrical reference signal correlated to the intensity modulation of the electromagnetic radiation, which is applied to each of the TOF elements falling intensity-modulated electromagnetic radiation is mixed with the reference signal and wherein the phase shift between the reference signal and the intensity-modulated electromagnetic radiation is detected. Hereinafter, a single sensor element of a detector is referred to as the TOF element.
Particularly preferred is an embodiment of the present invention in which the electromagnetic radiation is in the infrared, visible or UV frequency range. In this frequency range can be used on known from the prior art technologies for producing corresponding TOF detectors.
It is expedient here if the modulation frequency of the electromagnetic radiation is in the range between 1 kHz and 500 GHz, preferably between 100 kHz and 100 MHz. The modulation frequency must be adapted to the distance range for which the measuring method is to be used. It is advantageous if the modulation frequency of the electromagnetic radiation is tunable, so that the measuring method is applicable in different situations.
An embodiment of the invention is preferred in which the electromagnetic radiation reflected and / or scattered by the object is focused onto the detector with an imaging element.
To increase the uniqueness range of the time-of-flight measurement, an embodiment of the invention is preferred in which the at least one further method for distance measurement is a triangulation method. For carrying out the method, the source of the electromagnetic radiation and the at least one detector must have a known distance from one another, which is preferably variable.
In the simplest case, in the triangulation method, the object is illuminated with a punctiform intensity-modulated electromagnetic beam. The beam reflected from the object then strikes the detector at a distance from the source, the distance between the source and the point of impact of the electromagnetic radiation depending on the distance of the object from the source or a reference plane. The distance between object and reference plane is a unique function of the point of impact of the reflected radiation. In the simplest case, the point of impact can be determined by shifting a single detector with only one pixel or TOF element until the detector is in the range of the reflected radiation.
However, an embodiment of the invention is particularly preferred in which the at least one detector comprises a row of at least two photonic mixer devices arranged next to one another having. Such a line-shaped detector can be used with a fixed distance to the source of the electromagnetic radiation, this distance is also called a triangulation base. Depending on the distance of the object from the reference plane or the source of the electromagnetic radiation, the electromagnetic radiation scattered or reflected by the object fills different TOF elements or pixels of the line-shaped detector. Depending on which of the TOF element detects the scattered radiation, the distance of the object from the reference plane can be calculated with the help of the triangulation calculation.
A preferred embodiment of the invention uses a line-shaped detector in which several TOF elements are arranged in a row next to one another.
In each case two TOF elements can be combined to form a pixel. The two TOF elements combined into a pixel are preferably arranged in two superimposed lines, which reduces the measurement error, since both TOF elements are arranged at the same position in the line. The two combined TOF elements are supplied with two reference signals, which have a relative phase shift of 90 ° to each other, so that with a single measurement, the two quadrature components and thus the phase of the incident electromagnetic radiation is detected.
As an alternative to the line-shaped arrangement of the TOF elements in the detector, a two-dimensional arrangement of TOF elements can also be used so that the entire image of the object can be detected with a detector. When using, for example, a line illumination, the distance of the object from the position of the image of the line illumination on the two-dimensional detector can be calculated (light-section method).
In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the at least one further optical distance measuring method is a stereo triangulation method. In such a method, at least two detectors are arranged side by side, wherein the at least two detectors each have a one- or two-dimensional arrangement of TOF elements. The two detectors are offset from each other so that they observe the illuminated by the intensity modulated electromagnetic radiation object under two angles. The distance (base distance) between the two detectors is known. From the position of the two images generated on the detectors to each other and the known base distance of the two detectors, the distance of the object from the reference plane or the reference point can be determined uniquely.
The combination of the stereo triangulation method with the TOF method provides additional range information in addition to the two-fold range information from the TOF measurements of the two TOF detectors. Depending on the system design, this redundancy can be used to expand the uniqueness range of the TOF measurement and also to increase the accuracy. In addition, a massive expansion of the dynamic range can be achieved. The combination of the time-of-flight measurement with the aid of the TOF detectors with the triangulation method described above provides, as it were, two scales for distance measurement. In this case, for example, the distance of the object from the reference plane is roughly determined by means of the triangulation method, while a fine determination is carried out with the aid of the simultaneously executed time-of-flight method. Thus, the uniqueness range of the time-of-flight measurement is increased by the application of the second method.
Alternatively, triangulation can be used for more accurate near-field resolution and TOF for longer distances.
Another advantage of all described combinations of the TOF method with triangulation method is that the radiation reflected at objects at different distances from the detector strikes the detector at different angles, so that in principle never a TOF element simultaneously with the reflected radiation of different distances from the Detector of distant objects is illuminated. In this way it does not come to the output of erroneous distance information. For example, successively arranged transparent and non-transparent objects are detected separately.
Particularly preferred is an embodiment of the present invention, wherein the at least one further optical distance measuring method is an interferometric method.
In interferometry, one uses the wave property of electromagnetic radiation for relative or absolute distance measurement. Two coherent electromagnetic waves are spatially superimposed on a detector. Due to the spatial superposition and the coherence of the light, interference phenomena occur between the two waves. Depending on its phase difference, the integral intensity on the detector changes. The phase difference of the two electromagnetic waves depends on theirs Duration difference or their path length difference from. If the transit time difference corresponds exactly to half the wavelength of the electromagnetic radiation or an odd integer multiple thereof, then the two electromagnetic waves destructively interfere with each other. The intensity of the measured radiation is then minimal. On the other hand, if the two waves overlap constructively, ie with a transit time difference corresponding to an entire wavelength or an integral multiple thereof, then the intensity is maximal. Depending on the transit time difference, all intensity values between the minimum for destructive interference and the maximum for constructive interference can be achieved. From the intensity can thus be calculated back to the transit time difference between the two electromagnetic waves.
Such an interferometric method can be combined with the time-of-flight method by additionally directing a reference optical beam path from the source directly to the detector so that there is interference on the detector between the electromagnetic wave that has passed the reference beam path and the electromagnetic wave which has passed over the object in the measuring beam path takes place.
An embodiment of the invention is preferred in which the length of the reference beam path is varied. This can be achieved, for example, by moving a mirror in the reference beam path.
Due to the short wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation in the optical or infrared frequency range, small interferences and changes in the order of magnitude of a few nanometers can already be measured with the interferometric method. While the uniqueness range of the time-of-flight measurement is limited by the periodicity of the intensity modulation of the electromagnetic radiation, the uniqueness range of the interferometric measurement is dependent on the wavelength or frequency of the monochromatic electromagnetic radiation used. In white light interferometry or interferometry with low coherence length radiation, the uniqueness range depends on the coherence length of the radiation.
In order to increase the uniqueness range of the interferometric measuring method in a preferred embodiment of the invention, an intensity-modulated electromagnetic radiation with a white, d. H. broadband spectrum used. Such white electromagnetic radiation is characterized by its low coherence length. Ie. Only with substantially matched in their length beam paths of the reference or measuring beam interference can be observed at all. The visibility of the interference pattern varies greatly within the coherence length, so that a significantly improved uniqueness range is achieved. In this case, a first estimate for the magnitude of the distance of the object from the reference plane can already be made from the adaptation of the reference beam path to the length of the Meßstrahlpfads.
The combination of the time-of-flight method with interferometric methods makes it possible to determine the distance of the object from a reference plane with a significantly higher accuracy than would be possible with the time-of-flight measurement alone. The TOF measurement also makes it possible to supplement the relative interferometric measurement to an absolute measurement.
It will be understood that the time-of-flight method can be combined not only with one of the above mentioned optical distance measuring methods but also with several of these methods simultaneously.
Further features, advantages and possible applications of the present invention will become apparent from the following description of preferred embodiments and the dazugeörigen figures.
