Abstract

The present invention is a process for producing activated textile semi-finished products from recycled carbon fibers. The process is characterized in that nonwovens, felts or mats which consist of more than 50% by weight of recycled carbon fibers are used as the precursor material. The activation of the precursor semi-finished products takes place in a continuous continuous furnace with a defined furnace atmosphere of nitrogen and an oxygen-containing process gas. Depending on the weight of the precursor and the process speed, the process temperature in the oven is between 300 and 1200 ° C. After activation, the textile semi-finished products have a basis weight between 10 and 1200 g / m2. Thanks to the large number of micro pores produced, the activated semi-finished textile products have a factor of 5 to 20 greater specific surface area compared to carbon powder. As a result, particularly high absorption and desorption rates and speeds can be achieved with the activated textile semifinished products. Through the use of recycled carbon fibers in the precursor, the costs for the production of activated semi-finished textile products are reduced by about 30-35% compared to conventional products based on cellulose, polyacrylonitrile or pitch. Seen along the entire production chain, energy consumption is reduced by more than 60%.

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of activated textile semi-finished products. The process is characterized in that nonwovens, felts or mats predominantly of recycled carbon fibers (more than 50% by weight) are used as precursors. Thanks to the recycling of already oxidized and carbonized precursors include those produced by the new process the activated semi-finished products, compared to the existing products, a smaller footprint CO 2 (carbon footprint) and a better price-performance ratio.

Stand der TechnikState of the art

Activated carbon fibers (AKF) represent a special form of activated carbon. These are widely used in the production of various filters, respirators, protective clothing, technical thermal and heat insulation, etc. The activated carbon fibers have a fiber diameter between 5 and 30 microns. The micropores on the fiber surface are about 15-20 Å in size. Thanks to these micropores, compared to carbon powder having a grain size in the range between 500 and 5000 μm, the fibers have a factor of 20 greater specific surface area. Thanks to the realized active surface area of approx. 700-2500 m 2 / g, the fibers can achieve particularly high absorption desorption rates and speeds. These unique properties of activated carbon fibers combined with their excellent temperature and chemical resistance make them irreplaceable in many applications, such as hot gas filtration, air and water filtration, and the recovery of organic substances and solvents.

An important advantage of the activated carbon fibers is their textile character. The AKF can be processed easily and without additional modifications on conventional textile machines to various textile structures, such as yarns, fabrics, nonwovens, and felts.

The realized intermediates are in turn easily made by cutting, sewing, gluing, etc., to form more complex semi-finished products.

The production of activated carbon fibers takes place according to already known technical and technological processes. In US4401588 . DE2715486 and in DE2345298 various technologies for the production of AKF are described in detail.

Precursors for the production of AKF are usually cellulose or acrylic fibers, which are first oxidized at high temperatures and in a suitable process gas atmosphere and then carbonized. The activation of the fibers takes place in a further process step in which micropores are formed on the fiber surface under the action of water vapor, N 2 , CO 2 or other chemicals.

The production of semi-finished textile products from activated carbon fibers takes place by means of various technologies. Widespread are the production methods used in DE69809718 . EP 199150 . US4401588 and US4565727 to be discribed. In all these technologies, a semi-finished textile product, such as. As woven, knitted or knitted fabric, fleece or felt, which is then thermally stabilized and activated. Raw materials for this are usually cellulose, polyacrylonitrile, pitch, etc. The thermal stabilization includes the process steps of oxidation and carbonization. The activation takes place in a separate process step, in a steam, nitrogen or CO 2 atmosphere or in a chemical bath. An application also finds a production process that works in DE19729642 is described. In this process, the thermal stabilization and activation processes are realized in a single process step.

Thanks to their excellent absorption and desorption properties as well as their good temperature and chemical resistance, the activated carbon fibers and the textiles based on them are widely used in the production of filters for various industrial sectors. Only the high price of the products prevents a wider application in the field of technology. The high production costs are mainly due to the enormous material losses and the energy costs during the oxidation, the carbonization and the activation of the starting material. During thermal treatment, the precursor loses between 65 and 95% of its weight. As a result, the precursor costs account for approximately 65% of the total cost of producing activated carbon fibers. Another 15% of production costs account for energy costs.

Non-wovens, felts and mats (non-wovens), which consist predominantly of recycled carbon fibers, are used as precursors in the production of the new activated semi-finished textile products. The collective term "recycled carbon fiber" includes all forms of secondary carbon fibers which are obtained by comminuting primary fibers, by comminuting and / or shredding roving residues, scrim, fabric, plaiting and nonwoven residues, edge trimmings and residues were reprocessed from preforming and tape and prepreg production. The collective term "recycled carbon fiber" also encompasses the fiber materials that have been recovered by a mechanical, thermal or chemical treatment of resinous wastes, hard CFRP parts and old components.

The proportion of recycled carbon fibers in the precursor is between 50 and 100% by weight. The recycled carbon fibers in the precursor have a diameter of 5 to 50 microns and a length between 3 and 150 mm.

In addition to the recycled carbon fibers, further functional fibers may also be contained in the precursor semifinished products. As functional fibers are metal fibers, glass fibers, basalt fibers, ceramic fibers, cellulose or acrylic fibers used. The functional fibers have a fiber length between 3 and 150 mm. The diameter of the functional fibers is in the range between 7 and 100 microns.

The weight per unit area of the textile precursor semi-finished products is 20 to 5,000 g / m 2 . The recycled carbon fibers as well as the functional fiber of the precursor semi-finished products may be random or with a preferred orientation. The precursor semi-finished products are thermally or by needling, sewing or water jet solidified.

A device for producing the activated textile semi-finished products from recycled carbon fibers is known in 1 shown schematically. The activation of the precursor semi-finished products ( 1 ) takes place in a continuous furnace ( 2 ) with a defined furnace atmosphere. The precursor is determined by means of a delivery device ( 3 ) fed to the continuous furnace with constant pulling force and at the end of the process by means of a winder ( 4 ) continuously wound up.

The furnace atmosphere contains nitrogen ( 5 ) and an oxygen-containing process gas ( 6 ). The nitrogen content in the furnace atmosphere is at least 40%. As oxygen-containing process gas CO 2 or water vapor are used. The proportion of oxygen-containing is a maximum of 60%. Both the nitrogen and the oxygen-containing process gas are preheated to at least 200 ° C before being fed into the furnace. Depending on the weight of the precursor and the process speed, the process temperature in the oven is between 300 and 1200 ° C.

After activation, the textile semi-finished products have a basis weight between 10 and 1200 g / m 2 . As a result of activation, a large number of micropores are generated on the fiber surface. The pore size is between 10 and 200 Å. Thanks to these micropores, the activated semi-finished textile products have a factor of 5 to 20 greater specific surface area compared to carbon powder with a particle size in the range between 500 and 5000 microns. Due to the realized active surface area of approx. 700 to 2500 m 2 / g, particularly high absorption and desorption rates and velocities can be achieved with the activated textile semi-finished products.

By using recycled carbon fibers in the form of nonwovens, mats or felts as precursors, the costs for the production of activated semi-finished textile products are reduced by about 30-35% compared to conventional products based on cellulose, polyacrylonitrile or pitch , Seen along the entire production chain, energy consumption is reduced by more than 60%. This will contribute to sustainability, resource and energy efficiency.

As a result of the reduced production costs in combination with the realized sustainable production, new fields of application and new markets for the activated carbon fibers and the textile semi-finished products based thereon are to be tapped.
