Abstract

The method is based on a picture data programme containing the original pictures and also pictures with faults due to irregular perceptions or impressions. The two groups are separated and coded using a reduction factor to concentrate on motifs or themes, for passing to an evaluation unit for subjective evaluation, and to a picture quality unit (40) for objective evaluation. The results from the evaluation unit are examined in a multi-dimensional statistical analysis unit. This analysis employs the effects of the algorithms on the pictures to produce weighting coefficients. These are added in a linear combination to give an objective evaluation.

Description

25-28, 1994 "Picture Quality Evaluation based on Error Segmentation" bekannt. The invention relates to a method according to the preamble of Claim 1. Such a method is for two-dimensional images from the Proceedings SPIE, Vol. 2308, Visual Communications and Image Processing ′94, Chicago, Sept. 25-28, 1994 "Picture Quality Evaluation based on Error Segmentation ".

Zu diesen Aspekten zählen:To assess the quality of data compression methods for video signals have so far been time-consuming and costly subjective tests with a large number selected subjects. To make the image quality objective and therefore To be able to assess time and cost-effectively, it is from the above mentioned Literature known, the image to be rated with the undisturbed original image to be compared under certain aspects (segmentation). On these aspects counting:

  • a) Zusätzliche Kanten, die im originalen Bild nicht vorhanden sind,a) Additional edges that are not present in the original image,
  • b) Fehler an und in der Nähe von vorhandenen Kanten, beispielsweise unscharfe Kantenübergänge, undb) Defects at and near existing edges, for example blurred ones Edge transitions, and
  • c) sonstige Fehler, beispielsweise Rauschstörungen.c) other errors, for example noise disturbances.

However, this known image processing by segmentation and comparison is not only complex and limited to two-dimensional images, but takes the subjective perception - which is the actual standard for the Quality assessment represents - only in the context of a visual preprocessing of the evaluating images.

In contrast, the object of the invention is to provide a method at the outset to create the type mentioned, in which both two-dimensional and three-dimensional images can be assessed objectively and based on which the subjective perception psychological perceptual performance is taken into account.

This object is achieved by the characterizing features of Claim 1 solved.

Advantageous further developments and refinements of the invention result from the Subclaims.

Allgemeine Bemerkungen zum Wesen der ErfindungGeneral remarks on the essence of the invention

In a multidimensional investigation of the influence of coding errors on the subjective quality of three-dimensional television pictures with data-reduced transmission, it has been shown that the subjective quality of the examined pictures is almost completely described by the subjective assessment of "blurring", "noise" and "total block interference" can. In addition to these three perceptions, six other assessment aspects were examined, which, however, only played a subordinate role in the subjective quality assessment. The relationship between the subjective analysis of the image assessment and an objective assessment of the image quality derived from the resulting results is shown in FIG. 1.

The starting point for the subjective and objective evaluation is an image database 10 which contains the original images and the disturbed images. The image errors are based on certain specifications 11 , which are understood to mean the coding methods used for the data compression, the available transmission data rates or the resulting reduction factors and a representative selection of image motifs. As indicated by lines 12 and 13 in FIG. 1, the images of the database 10 are first fed to a block 20 which symbolizes the assessment of the images in a subjective test. The results of the subjective assessment (block 20 ) are examined in an evaluation device 30 . The resultant examination results form the basis for an objective quality assessment of the image database 10 in the blocks 40 and 50 of an objective evaluation device. For this objective, automatic quality assessment, the images of the database 10 are fed to the block 40 via lines 14 , 15 . The separation between subjective examination and objective evaluation is indicated in FIG. 1 by dashed line 70 . It is essential that the subjective examination is only necessary as an initialization step for the design of the objective evaluation, which - after initialization - takes place without further action for all types of disturbances present in the image database 10 (which are due to the coding methods and reduction factors used).

In the one-off subjective evaluation (block 20 ) of the image database 10 , the viewers or test subjects have to assess nine different aspects for each image, which describe the technical reproduction quality of the images viewed in different ways. The starting values of the subjective assessment (block 20 ), ie the assessed aspects 21 to 29 , are the subjective assessments of all images based on the nine different assessment aspects.

The assessments of the nine aspects 21 to 29 from the images of the database 10 are then evaluated in the evaluation device 30 on the basis of a multidimensional, statistical analysis - the factor analysis mainly known from psychology. All quality components 34 to 36 including the associated weighting factors 31 to 33, which are relevant for subjective quality perception and thus also for objective evaluation, result. The weighting factors 31 to 33 serve to linearly combine in a block 50 the quality components 41 to 43 objectively assessed in block 40 to form an objective image quality judgment 51 .

For in the evaluation device 30 for the subjective image quality evaluation as relevant determined objective quality components 34 to 36, the invention methods provides, with which the subjective ratings of the components be well modeled 34 to 36 for the objective assessment in block 40 as possible in algorithms. In the evaluation device 30 , the nine assessed aspects are traced back to two assessment dimensions on which the subjective assessment is based. The two assessment dimensions can be interpreted with the aid of the nine assessed aspects on the basis of a factor load matrix, which is shown graphically in FIG . The loads of the factor load matrix indicate the correlation of the individual aspects with the two determined dimensions of assessment. For simplification, only the actually relevant aspects of the nine aspects, namely the image quality BQ, the sharpness SF, the noise RA and total block disturbances BA, are taken into account in FIG. 2.

In FIG. 2, orthogonally positioned vectors mean that the relevant aspects are completely independent of one another, while parallel vectors indicate a connection between the relevant aspects. From Fig. 2 it can be seen that the assessment aspect "image quality" 90 is very strongly related to the aspect "sharpness" 84 and less strongly to the aspects "noise" 80 and "block noise" 82 . The projections 81 , 83 and 85 of the three disturbance perceptions on the axis 90 of the image quality assessment indicate the connection of the aspects 80 , 82 , 84 with the quality assessment. The weighting factors 31 to 33 ( FIG. 1) are indicated with the reference symbols 81 , 83 and 85 .

The field of application of the method according to the invention for the objective assessment of images disturbed by data compression methods results from the coding methods and transmission data rates taken into account in the initializing, subjective test or the disturbances caused thereby. Insofar as certain faults, such as time-dependent faults, were not taken into account in the initializing, subjective test, the initializing loop via an expanded image database 10 , the subjective assessment (block 20 ) and the evaluation device 30 must be run through again in order to adapt the objective evaluation to such types of disturbance become. This may result in new weighting factors 31 to 33 , but possibly also completely new objective image quality components 41 to 43 , which must be integrated into blocks 40 and 50 . The coding errors taken into account for the evaluation method described below cover the possible disturbances of the currently standardized two-dimensional television image coding method.

Objektive Bewertung der relevanten KomponentenObjective evaluation of the relevant components

The objective evaluation of the television picture quality is carried out by a weighted combination in block 50 ( FIG. 1) of the picture quality components ( 41 to 43 ) objectively evaluated in block 40 . For the typical coding errors on which the image database (block 10 ) is based, ie coding errors which are to be expected on the basis of the transmission methods standardized today, the perceptions of "blurring", "noise" and "total block disturbances" have proven to be relevant. The independent assessment of these image quality components is shown graphically in block 40 ( FIG. 3): in blocks 44 to 46 , the image quality components "blurring", "noise" and "total block failures" for the input signals of original 14 and disturbed image 15 are independent of one another evaluated and supplied as output signals 41 to 43 to block 50 ( FIG. 1). The algorithms for emulating the subjective evaluation of the relevant assessment aspects in blocks 44 to 46 ( FIG. 3) are described below.

1. Beurteilung der Unschärfe1. Assessment of the blur

A blurred image impression is essentially caused by a decrease in the high spatial components in the frequency spectrum when comparing the original and the disturbed image. This observation is the basis of the algorithm described here for simulating the subjective focus assessment. The principle is shown in Fig. 4. First, the spatial frequency spectrum is calculated for the original 110 and the disturbed image 140 in blocks 120 and 150 . Only for certain extracts ( 131 to 134 and 161 to 164 ) from these spectra, which correspond to selected orientations, are the highest transmitted frequencies 141 to 144 and 171 to 174 determined in blocks 130 and 160 . In blocks 181 to 184 , the decrease in the highest transmitted spatial frequencies 141 to 144 and 171 to 174 from the original 110 to the disturbed image 140 is determined for the selected orientations. It is only in block 190 that the calculated frequency decreases 185 to 188 of the different orientations are combined to form an objective uncertainty assessment 191 .

The method for blur assessment, which is only shown schematically in FIG. 4, is shown in more detail in FIG. 5. After determining the spatial frequency spectra in blocks 120 and 160 , analogous to the orientation selectivity of the human visual system, only four extracts are evaluated that correspond to certain orientations of image structures in the original and disturbed image, namely the horizontal 134 and 164 , vertical 131 and 161 and diagonal orientations 132 , 133 and 162 , 163 . For each of these extracts from the two-dimensional spectrum, the highest transmitted spatial frequency is determined as follows: All frequency values of a logarithmic frequency scale below an (empirically determined) threshold 140 and 170 are neglected. From the values above this threshold, the one with the highest frequency is selected, it being necessary to ensure (in the simplest case, for example, by selecting the fifth highest frequency value) that individual values, such as e.g. B. 177 , which are above the threshold, incorrectly indicate the highest transmitted frequency of the image motif. In this way, the highest frequencies 141 to 144 and 171 to 174 are determined for all four orientations of original and disturbed image in blocks 135 to 138 and 165 to 168 . From this, the decrease in the highest frequency from the original to the disturbed image is determined in blocks 181 to 184 for each of the orientations. These reductions 185 to 188 are combined with one another in block 190 for the objective sharpness or blur assessment.

When linearly combining the frequency decreases for the different orientations, a distinction must be made between two-dimensional (2DTV) television images and three-dimensional (3DTV) television images: For the 2DTV assessment, the horizontal and vertical orientations 185 and 188 are weighted more than the diagonal extracts 186 and 187 , which corresponds to the orientation sensitivity of human perception. In contrast, the horizontal extracts in 3DTV images must be given greater weight than all other extracts, since the depth resolution of the visual system is also based on the horizontal components in binocular perception. It has been shown that the evaluation of the horizontal component of the two-dimensional frequency spectra alone provides a good agreement between the objective and subjective uncertainty assessment for both 2DTV and 3DTV.

2. Bewertung des Rauschens2. Assessment of noise

Mit der "Varianz" ist hier die mittlere quadratische Abweichung der Helligkeitswerte vom Mittelwert gemäß der nachstehenden mathematischen Beziehung gemeint:Noise is perceived in disturbed images by new pixels in the original caused whose brightness and color unrelated to the existing Image content stands. This reduces the redundancy of the image content in the disturbed Picture. This decrease can be done using the variances of brightness and Determine color values when comparing the original and the disturbed image. With the "Variance" here is the mean square deviation of the brightness values from the Mean value according to the following mathematical relationship:

For this purpose, the original 110 and the disturbed image 130 ( FIG. 6) are divided into a plurality of partial images of the same size. A size of four by four pixels has been found to be optimal (image blocks 401 and 421 ). For all partial images, the variance 402 and 422 of the brightness values is calculated in blocks 400 and 420 . With additional consideration of the color values, the agreement between objective and subjective assessment can be improved. The variances ( 402 and 422 ) of all partial images are then added up in blocks 410 and 430 for the original and independently of the disturbed image. The noise rating 441 results from the calculation of the increase in the sums of variance 411 and 431 from the original 110 to the disturbed image 140 in block 440 .

3. Bewertung totaler Blockstörungen3. Evaluation of total block faults

In the case of the transformation coding, the images to be transmitted are broken down into small partial images which are compressed independently of one another. The extent of interference in neighboring partial images (image blocks) can therefore be completely different. If the data of an image block is greatly reduced, only a few of the transformation coefficients are transmitted - in extreme cases only the direct component. Since the image blocks are compressed independently of one another, the block structure on which the coding is based becomes visible in the event of a strong reduction. Total block disturbances are particularly striking. FIG. 7 shows why they are so disruptive: a block ( 450 ) with a very strong reduction in the image information is surrounded by blocks ( 451 to 454 ), the information content of which is much less reduced. Such a total block disturbance can be arithmetically recognized by comparing the variance of color and brightness values within such an image block with the variances of the adjacent image blocks. The interference effect of such block disturbances within an image is determined by the summation of all total block disturbances of the compressed image.

The principle is shown in FIG . For all partial images 470 of a disturbed image 130 , it is checked in blocks 475 and 480 whether there is a total block disturbance or not. The size of the picture blocks 470 must correspond to that of the transformation coding (usually eight by eight picture elements large fields). The detection of total block disturbances is based on the principle in FIG. 7: First, for an image block 470 ( FIG. 8) or 450 ( FIG. 7), it is checked in block 475 whether the fluctuation in its brightness and color values is below a certain threshold 1 lies. If this is not the case ( 477 ), the next following image block is checked ( 478 ). If the fluctuation is smaller ( 476 ) than the predetermined threshold value 1 , then the fluctuations in the brightness and color values of the adjacent image blocks 451 to 454 ( FIG. 7) are calculated in block 480 . If the fluctuations of a defined number of adjacent image blocks are below ( 482 ) a threshold value 2 , there is no total block failure and the next image block can be checked ( 478 ). If enough neighboring image blocks have a fluctuation in their brightness and color values that is above the threshold value 2 , then this is a total block failure ( 481 ). The fluctuation of the color and brightness values in a partial image is determined by calculating the variance of the partial image:

All total block failures that are registered ( 481 ) during the examination of the partial images of an image are summed up in block 490 . The number of all total block disturbances detected during the examination of an image represents a measure 491 for the subjective perception of total block faults. If this method with the selected threshold values also (incorrectly) discover total block disturbances in the original, the value determined for the disturbed image has to be changed the value determined for the original can be reduced.

Normierung der objektiven BeurteilungenStandardization of objective assessments

The objectively determined assessments must be based on a uniform scaling for the combination in block 50 ( FIG. 1). Therefore, the scaling factors with which the objective evaluations can be adapted to the (uniform) scaling of the subjective evaluations must be determined (only once during the first objective evaluation).

Bildung eines Qualitätsurteils für 2DTV-BilderFormation of a quality judgment for 2DTV pictures

Fig. 9 gives an overview of the individual steps of the objective image quality evaluation. From the original 500 and the disturbed image 510 , the subjective assessments of the blur 520 , the noise 530 and the total block failures 540 are calculated in block 40 . These perceptions are simulated with the algorithms already described. The objective assessments 521 , 531 and 541 are then assessed with the weights 31 to 33 from the subjective analysis in block 50, first in 550, 560 and 570 . The weighted objective individual evaluations 551 , 561 and 571 are finally added to the objective image quality evaluation 581 in block 580 .

The dependence of the relevant assessment components determined in block 40 and the weights used in block 50 on an image database on which the subjective analysis is based (block 10 in FIG. 1) is indicated in FIG. 9 by the dashed arrows 511 to 513 .

Bildung eines Qualitätsurteils für 3DTV-BilderFormation of a quality judgment for 3DTV pictures

The procedures for assessing image quality for 2DTV and 3DTV images are almost identical. The difference is that each individual picture in the 2DTV evaluation corresponds to two pictures in the 3DTV evaluation ( FIG. 10): Each 3DTV picture ( 601 ) consists of one picture 602 for the left eye and one 603 for the right Eye.

For the two images of an original ( 600 ) and a disturbed ( 610 ) stereoscopic image pair, the monocular evaluations ( 621 and 622 for the blur) are first calculated in block 40 . In contrast to the 2DTV evaluation, the monocular evaluations must be summarized by forming the arithmetic mean for the binocular evaluation 623 , 633 and 643 of each image quality component. After normalization, the objective ratings 626 , 636 and 646 are weighted in 650, 670 and 680 . These weighted ratings are summed up in 680 to form a 3DTV image quality rating. The dependence on the disturbances present in the image database is indicated by the dashed arrows 611 to 613 .
