Die den Gegenstand vorliegender Erfindung bildende Vorrichtung beruht auf der Eigenschaft mehrerer Körper, daß ihre elektrische Leitfähigkeit mit steigender Temperatur in außerordentlich hohem Maße zunimmt. Ein solcher Körper ist z. B. das metallische Bor, welches bei einer Temperatur von 520 ° etwa ein Hunderttausendstel des bei 27° gemessenen Widerstandes besitzt, ferner die in den Nernstlampen verwendeten Oxyde verschiedener Erdmetalle, welche bei gewöhnlicher Temperatur Nichtleiter und von 5 bis 600 ° ab gute Leiter sind. Die Vorrichtung besteht aus einer tragbaren elektrischen Stromquelle, in deren Stromkreis ein derartiger Widerstandskörper und eine beliebige elektrische (optische oder akustische) Signalvorrichtung geschaltet ist. Der Widerstandskörper ist mit einem katalytisch wirkenden Überzug aus Platinschwamm o. dgl. versehen, eventuell unter Zwischenschaltung einer isolierenden, hitzebeständigen Schicht, wie Glimmer, Quarz o. dgl., welcher mit dem zu prüfenden Gasgemisch in Berührung gebracht wird. Während in reiner Luft die Leitfähigkeit des Widerstandskörpers so gering ist, daß er einen Stromdurchgang durch die Signalvorrichtung praktisch verhindert, wird bei einem Gehalt der Luft an brennbaren Gasen die katalytische Substanz und damit der Widerstandskörper erwärmt; letzterer vermindert seinen Widerstand auf einen wesentlich geringeren Wert, und die Signalvorrichtung wird nunmehr in Tätigkeit gesetzt. Die ganze Vorrichtung ist derartig in einem Schutzgehäuse eingeschlossen, daß die zu untersuchende Luft freien Zutritt zu der katalytischen Schicht d hat. Die Vorrichtung wirkt nach dem oben beschriebenen Prinzip in der Weise, daß nur bei Vorhandensein von brennbaren Gasen die Signalvorrichtung f zur Wirkung kommt, weil alsdann der Widerstand des Körpers c infolge seiner Erwärmung durch die katalytische Substanz d sich bedeutend verringert.The accompanying drawing shows an embodiment of the device in connection with an electric lamp.
