Elektrophoretische Bildwiedergabevorrichtung
Die Erfindung bezieht sich auf eine elektrophoretische Bildwiedergabevorrichtung, die enthält:
eine elektrophoretische Suspension, die aus einer Dispersion von Pigmentteilchen und einem Ladungsmaterial zum Laden der Pigmentteilchen in einer dielektrischen
Suspensionsflüssigkeit besteht;
eine erste transparente Elektrode auf einem ersten Substrat, und

mindestens eine segmentierte Elektrode auf einem zweiten Substrat, wobei der Raum zwischen den genannten
Substraten eine Zelle zur Aufnahme der genannten elektrophoretischen Suspensionen bildet.
Elektrophoretische BiIdwiedergäbevorrichtungen,
die nachstehend als EPID-Zellen bezeichnet werden (Electrophoretic
Image Display), sind bereits in der Literatur beschrieben (siehe US-PS 3 612 758 und US-PS 3 668 I06).
Im allgemeinen enthält eine EPID-Zelle zunächst
eine Dispersion von Pigmentteilchen in einem flüssigen dielektrischen Suspensionsniedium, dem ein Farbstoff zugesetzt
wird, um zu bewirken, dass das Dispersionsmedium eine kontrastierende Farbe in bezug auf die Farbe der
Pigment teilchen erhält, und ein Ladungsmaterial zum Laden der Pigmentteilchen.
Die Dispersion befindet sich in einer Zelle, die durch zwei nahe beieinander liegende Elektroden gebildet
wird, die mittels eines dünnen Abstandhalters aus Isoliermaterial
miteinander verbunden sind. Eine der Elektroden - die vordere oder Frontelektrode - ist transparent und
die hintere Elektrode, die derart ausgebildet ist, dass sie dem (den) gewünschten wiederzugebenden Bild(ern) entspricht,
kann gegebenenfalls transparent sein.
Ein elektrisches Feld wird über der Suspension mit Hilfe einer Gleichspannung erzeugt, die an die vordere

und die hintere Elektrode angelegt wird.
In Abhängigkeit von der Ladung der Pigmentteilchen und der Polarität der Elektroden werden die
Pigmentteilchen entweder zu der vorderen oder zu der hinteren Elektrode hin gezogen.
Wenn die Pigmentteilchen negativ geladen sind, die vordere Elektrode positiv und die hintere Elektrode
negativ ist,.werden die Pigmentteilchen zu der vorderen
Elektrode in Form der hinteren Elektrode gezogen. Der Beobachter sieht ein Bild in der Farbe des Pigments gegen
die Farbe des Dispersionsmediums als Hintergrund. Umkehr der Polarität zwischen den Elektroden hat zur Folge, dass
sich das Pigment zu der hinteren Elektrode .bewegt, wo es hinter dem Dispersionsmedium verborgen wird.
Die Abschaltung des elektrischen Feldes führt nicht zu einer Unterbrechung des Bildes, weil die Pigmentteilchen
während einer gewissen Zeitspanne in der vorher aktivierten Lage bleiben. Auf diese Weise hat die Zelle
eine gewisse Speicherwirkung.
Bei den bekannten EPID-Zellen ergibt sich u.a.
das Problem, dass sie verhältnismässig lange Schaltzeiten aufweisen, d.h., dass die Zeit, die Pigmentteilchen
benötigen, um sich von der vorderen zu der hinteren Elektrode zu bewegen oder umgekehrt, verhältnismässig lang

und dem Abstand und der angelegten Spannung zwischen den Elektroden andererseits wird gemäss der Formel

bestimmt, in der t die Schaltzeit, d den Abstand zwischen der vorderen und der hinteren Elektrode, c die Dielektrizitätskonstante
und /"7 die Viskosität des Suspensionsmediums
darstellen, während ^ das Zetapotential und V die angelegte Spannung ist.
Wie sich erkennen lässt, hängt die Schaltzeit in erheblichem Masse von dem Abstand zwischen den Elektroden
ab, derart, dass sie gemäss einer quadratischen Funktion dieses Abstandes zunimmt.
Aus praktischen Gründen ist dem Abstand zwischen den Elektroden eine minimale Grenze gesetzt, so dass die
minimale Schaltzeit für einen bestimmten Potentialunterschied für eine bestimmte Suspension beschränkt ist.
Für viele Anwendungen ist eine Schaltzeit, die kürzer als die Schaltzeit der bisher bekannten EPID-Zellen
ist, sehr erwünscht.
Ein weiteres Problem ist die Notwendigkeit, Farbstoffe
in der Suspension zu verwenden, um das Pigment dem Auge zu entziehen, wenn es sich auf der hinteren
Elektrode befindet.
Die Erfindung bezweckt u.a., eine EPID-Zelle
zu schaffen, die eine kürzere Schaltzeit als die bereits
bekannten EPID-Zellen aufweist.

Weiter bezweckt die Erfindung, eine EPID-Zelle zu schaffen, die bei einer herabgesetzten Spannung arbeiten
kann.
Ausserdem bezweckt die Erfindung, eine EPID-Zelle '
zu schaffen, in der die Suspension frei von Farbstoffen ist.
Nach der Erfindung ist eine elektrophoretische Bildwiedergabevorrichtung der eingangs erwähnten Art
dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass eine transparente Isolierschicht auf der genannten segmentierten Elektrode angebracht ist,
und dass eine Maschenelektrode in Form der segmentierten Elektrode, die Offnungen aufweist, die mit dem blossen Auge
kaum sichtbar sind, auf der genannten transparenten Isolierschicht angebracht ist, wobei entweder die genannte Maschenelektrode
oder die genannte segmentierte Elektrode aus einem lichtreflektierenden Metall hergestellt ist, während
die Vorrichtung weiter elektrische Mittel enthält, mit deren Hilfe eine umkehrbare Spannung zwischen der genannten
Maschenelektrode und der genannten segmentierten Elektrode angelegt wird.
Die EPID-Zelle nach der Erfindung wirkt wie folgt:
Wenn eine reflektierende Maschenelektrode und
ein schwarzes negativ geladenes, in einer klaren Flüssigkeit suspendiertes Pigment verwendet werden, wobei die
hintere und die vordere Elektrode in bezug auf die Maschenelektrode negativ sind, ist die ganze Pigmentmenge

auf der Maschenelektrode abgelagert und siebt der dorel*

Fenrr die Polarität der Maschenelektrode und der hinteren Elektrode umgekehrt werden, wird das Pigment
in den Maschenöffnungen abgelagert und sieht der Beobachter
das freigelegte reflektierende Metallder Masche.
Infolge der Tatsache, dass sich das Pigment nur zwischen der Maschenoberfläche und den Offnungen zu bewegen
und nicht den viel grösseren Abstand zwischen der vorderen Elektrode und der hinteren Elektrode zurückzulegen braucht,
um den Schaltvorgang auszulösen, wird die Schaltzeit in den EPID-Zellen nach der Erfindung erheblich verkürzt.
Die zum Betreiben der Zelle erforderliche Spannung wird ebenfalls erheblich herabgesetzt, weil das Pigment
zum Auslösen des Schaltvorgangs einen viel geringeren Abstand zurückzulegen braucht.
Die Erfindung wird nachstehend beispielsweise an Hand der Zeichnung näher erläutert, deren einzige Figur
einen Querschnitt durch eine EPID-Zelle nach der Erfindung
zeigt.
In der Zeichnung liegt einer vorderen transparenten Elektrode 1, die z.B. aus Indiumoxid besteht, eine Dicke
von etwa 1000 A aufweist und sich auf einem transparenten z.B. aus Glas oder Methylmethacrylatharz bestehenden

Substrat 2 befindet, eine hintere transparente Elektrode gegenüber, die z.B. aus Indiumoxid besteht und eine Dicke
von etwa 1000 A aufweist.
Die hintere Elektrode 3 befindet sich auf einem transparenten Substrat 4, das aus Glas oder einem anderen
geeigneten nichtleitenden transparenten Material bestehen kann. Die hintere Oberfläche des Substrats 4 wird mit Hilfe
einer Schicht aus schwarzer Farbe 5 schwarzgefärbt.
Die vordere Elektrode 1 und die hintere Elektrode sind durch eine 50/um dicke Abdichtung 6 aus Epoxydharz
voneinander getrennt.
Auf der Oberfläche der hinteren Elektrode 3» die der vorderen Elektrode 1 zugekehrt ist, liegt eine dünne
transparente dielektrische Schicht 7» die aus einem Photoresistmaterial, wie AZ 135OJ, hergestellt von Shipley Co.,
mit einer Dicke von 5000 X besteht. Die Oberfläche der dielektrischen Schicht 7. die der vorderen Elektrode 1
zugekehrt ist, ist mit einem dünnen Maschengitter 8 aus reflektierendem Aluminium oder einem anderen reflektierenden
Metall überzogen. Das Maschengitter 8 weist Offnungen mit einem Durchmesser von 8/um in Mittelabständen von 19/Um auf.
Eine undurchsichtige Maske 12, die aus einer dünnen Schicht aus schwarzer Farbe besteht, befindet sich
auf der Oberfläche der vorderen Elektrode 1, die der
hinteren Elektrode 3 gegenüber liegt.

Das Metallmaschengitter wird dadurch erhalten, dass eine dünne Aluminiumschicht auf die dielektrische
Schicht 7 aufgedampft und dann die Aluminiumschicht mit einem Atzmittel, wie Phosphor- und Salpetersäure, über eine
Photoresistmaske geätzt wird, um die Öffnungen in der
Aluminiumschicht und das resultierende Maschengitter 8
zu bilden.
Eine elektrophoretische Suspension, die ein Gemisch
von Perchloräthylen und Xylol in einem Volumenverhältnis von 7 : 3 enthält, dem 2 Gew.% Diarylid (gelbes Pigment)
und 1 Gew.$ "Chevron OLOA-370" zugesetzt werden, um die
Dispersion zu stabilisieren und das Pigment negativ aufzuladen, wurde in die Zelle injiziert, die dann abgedichtet
wurde. Gleichspannungen wurden über Leitungen 9i 10 und
an die hintere, die vordere bzw. die Maschenelektrode angelegt.
Das Anlegen einer Spannung von -100 V an die
Maschenelektrode 8 und die vordere Elektrode 1 in bezug auf Erde (die hintere .Elektrode 3) hatte zur Folge, dass
sich das negativ geladene Pigment grösstenteils in den Maschenöffnungen befand, wodurch die reflektierende
Oberfläche der Maschenelektrode 8 durch die vordere Elektrode 1. hindurch sichtbar war. Wenn die Polarität
zwischen der Elektrode 3·' und dem Maschengitter 8 derart

Die Vorrichtung arbeitete mit Erfolg mit Spannungen von sogar nur 2Q V.

Claims (6)
- PHA. 20 760. 25.10.77.PATENTANSPRÜCHE:( 1. ' Elektrophoretische Bildwiedergabevorrichtung, die enthält:eine elektrophoretische Suspension, die aus einer Suspension von Pigmentteilchen und einem Material zum Laden der Pigmentteilchen in einer dielektrischen Suspensionsflüssigkeit besteht;eine erste transparente Elektrode auf einem ersten Substrat,mindestens eine segmentierte Elektrode aus einem zweitenSubstrat, wobei der Raum zwischen den genannten Substraten eine Zelle zur Aufnahme der genannten elektrophoretischen Suspension bildet, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass eine transparente Isolierschicht auf der genannten segmentierten Elektrode angebracht ist, und dass eine Maschenelektrode in Form der segmentierten Elektrode, die Offnungen aufweist, die mit dem blossen Auge kaum sichtbar sind, auf der genannten transparenten Isolierschicht angebracht ist, wobei entweder die genannte Maschenelektrode oder die genannte segmentierte Elektrode aus einem lichtreflektierenden Metall besteht, während die Vorrichtung weiter elektrische Mittel enthält, mit deren Hilfe eine umgekehrte Spannung zwischen der genannten Maschenelektrode und der genannten segmentierten Elektrode angelegt wird.809823/0619 ORIGINAL INSPECTEDPHA. 20 76O.25.10.77.
- 2. Bildwiedergabevorrichtung nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Maschenelektrode aus einem lichtreflektierenden Metall besteht.
- 3. Bildwiedergabevorrichtung nach Anspruch 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die erste transparente Elektrode aus einer dünnen Uberzugsschicht eines transparenten elektrisch leitenden Materials auf der Oberfläche eines transparenten elektrisch isolierenden Substrats besteht.
- 4. Bildwiedergabevorrichtung nach Anspruch 3» dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die segmentierte Elektrode transparent ist.
- 5. Bildwiedergabevorrichtung nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass.sich die segmentierte Elektrode auf einem transparenten elektrisch isolierenden Substrat befindet.
- 6. Bildwiedergabevorrichtung nach Anspruch 3> dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die reflektierende Maschenelektrode aus Aluminium besteht.7· Bildwiedergabevorrichtung nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass eine undurchsichtige Maske auf der genannten ersten transparenten Elektrode angebracht ist, wobei diese undurchsichtige Maske lichtdurchlässige Gebiete in Form der genannten segmentierten Elektrode aufweist.
