Description
Die Erfindung bezieht sich auf eigenklebrige, elastomere, in Lösungsmitteln dispergierbare, in Lösungsmitteln unlösliche,
polymere Mikrokugeln und auf ein Verfahren zur Herstellung desselben.
Die US-PS 3 691 14o beschreibt eigenklebrige Acrylatcopolymerisatmikrokugeln,
die als Hauptanteil mindestens einen Alkylacrylatester
und als kleineren Anteil ein ionisches Monomer enthalten.
Wie in dieser US-PS erörtert wird, können die Mikrokugeln überraschenderweise
durch Suspememonspolymerisation hergestellt werden, welche bisher als ungeeignet für die Herstellung von
klebrigen Polymerisaten angesehen worden ist* Nach der in dieser
US-PS beschriebenen Technik werden die Mikrokugeln unter Verwendung eines Emulgators in einer Menge größer als die kritische
Micellenkonzentration und unter Verzicht auf zusätzlich zugesetzte Schutzkolloide und dergl. hergestellt. Die Mikrokugeln

ι nach dieser US—PS sind copolymerischer Art und erfordern ein
ionisches Comonomer als wesentliche Komponente.
Es ist nun gefunden worden, daß eigenklebrige Mikrokugeln mit
physikalischen Eigenschaften ähnlich denen der US-PS 3 691 14o, d.h. mit Eigenklebrigkeit, Unschmelzbarkeit, Dispergierbarkeit
in Lösungsmitteln und Unlöslichkeit in Lösungsmitteln, hergestellt
werden können, welche nicht auf Copolymerisate beschränkt
sind, sondern auch Homopolymerisate sein können und nicht ein ionisches Comonomer enthalten. Die Mikrokugeln wer- \
\den durch wässrige Suspensionspolymerisation hergestellt, be- ~>
nötigen aber als einen wesentlichen Bestandteil bei ihrer Herstellung einen nachfolgend definierten Suspensionsstabilisator.
Die Erfindung schlägt eigenklebrige, unschmelzbare, in Lösungs-
i mitteln unlösliche, in Lösungsmitteln dispergierbare, elasto- !
mere polymere Mikrokugeln vor, die aus nicht-ionischen Monomeren gebildet worden sind und aus mindestens einem oleophilen, !
i in Wasser emuüigierbaren Alkyl acryl at— oder —me th acry la tester i
bestehen. !
Die Mikrokugeln der Erfindung v/erden durch wässrige Suspensionspolymerisation
unter Verwendung von Emulgatoren in einer Menge größer als die kritische Micellenkonzentration gemeinsam mit
einem ionischen Suspensionsstabilisator gebildet.
Geeignete Alkylacrylat- oder -methacrylatestermonomeren sind

solche, die oleophil und in Wasser emulgierbar sind, eine beschränkte
Wasserlöslichkeit haben und als Homopolymerisate im allgemeinen eine Glasübergangstemperatur unter etwa -2o C aufweisen.
Zu beispielhaften Alkylacrylat- und -methacrylatestermonomeren, die zur Herstellung der Mikrokugeln der Erfindung
geeignet sind, gehören n-Butylacrylat, sek.-Butylacrylat, 2-Methylbutylacrylat,
4-Methyl-2-pentylacrylat, 2-Äthylhexylacrylat,
Isooctylacrylat, Isodecylmethacrylat und dergleichen. Alkylacrylat- und -methacrylatestermonomeren mit Glasübergangstemperaturen
über -2o°C (z.B. Butylmethacrylat, Isobornylacrylat oder dergl.) können gemeinsam mit einem der oben beschriebenen
Monomeren verwendet werden, sofern die Glasübergangstemperatur des erhaltenen Polymerisats unter etwa -2o C
liegt.
Außerdern kann die klebrige Natur der Mikrokugeln durch Einschluß
eines kleineren Anteils eines Nicht-Acrylat- oder -methacrylatestercomonomeren,
das nicht-ionisch und in Wasser unlöslich ist, wie z.B. Divinylbenzol, N-tert.-Octylacrylamid
usv/., variiert v/erden.
Die Mikrokugeln der Erfindung werden durch wässrige Suspensionspolymerisation
unter Verwendung mindestens eines Emulgators in einer Konzentration größer als die kritische Micellenkonzentration
hergestellt. Die kritische Micellenkonzentration ist die kleinste Emulgatorkonzentration, die zur Bildung von Micellen
erforderlich ist, und ist für jeden Emulga;or etwas unterschiedlich, wobei geeignete Konzentrationen typischerweise

Die für die erfolgreiche Herstellung der eigenklebrigen Mikrokugeln
der Erfindung verwendeten Emulgatoren sind vorzugsweise anionischer Art, und typische Beispiele dafür sind Natriumdodecylbenzolsulfonat,
Natriumsalze von Alkylaryläthersulfonaten und dergleichen. Nicht-ionische Emulgatoren, wie z.B. äthoxylierter
Oleylalkohol, können ebenfalls verwendet v/erden, und zwar allein oder gemeinsam mit anionischen Typen. In dem letzterjai
Pail ist es vorteilhaft, wenn der anionische Emulgator vorherrscht.
Katalysatoren oder Polymerisationsinitiatoren für die Polymerisation
der Monomeren zur Bildung der Mikrokugeln der Erfindung sind solche, die normalerweise für freiradikalische Poly- i
merisation von Acrylatmonomeren geeignet und öllöslich sind S
j und eine sehr geringe Löslichkeit in Wasser haben, wie z.B.
Benzoylperoxid. Die Verwendung von wasserlöslichem Katalysator |
kann die Bildung· von erheblichen Mengen Latex bewirken, und j
die äußerst kleine Teilchengröße und die Löslichkeit in Lö- j
sungsmitteln desselben sind unerwünscht. I
Die Konzentration von Katalysatoren kann die Kugelqualität
beeinflussen und soll daher in der Größenordnung von etwa o,15 bis etwa o,66 Gew.-% der gesamten Monomeren und noch
vorteilhafter etwa o,25 bis etwa o,45Gew*-% liegen. Katalysatorkonzentrationen unter etwa o,15 Gew.—% können eine
Agglomeration der Mikrokugeln bewirken, während Konzentrationen

über etwa 0,66 Gew.—?ü zu Polymerisaten niedrigen Molekulargewichts
führen können, die nicht alle erwünschten Eigenschaften besitzen.
Ionische Suspensionsstabilisatoren, die die Bildung der Mikrokugeln
unterstützen, können durch eine Grenzflächenspannung von mindestens etwa 15,ο dyn je cm charakterisiert v/erden.
Unter Grenzflächenspannung ist hier der Wert zu verstehen, der
zwischen der Monornerphase und einer l,o-gew.-%igen wässrigen
Lösung des Stabilisators ermittelt wird. Zur Bestimmung der Grenzflächenspannung kann ein Standardtest, ASTM D-1331-56,
mit der Bezeichnung "Standard Methods of Tests for Surface and Interfacial Tension of Solutions of Surface Active Agents"
benutzt werden. Wenn die Grenzflächenspannung zwischen der Monomerphase und der 1, o-gew-?oigen wässrigen Stabilisator—
lösung unter etwa 15,ο dyn je cm liegt, ist eine unzureichende
Stabilisierung der fertigen polymerisierten Tröpfchen gegeben und findet Agglomeration statt.
Die ungefähre Konzentration eines einzelnenßtabilisators, die
zur erfolgreichen Herstellung der klebrigen Mikrokugeln der Erfindung erforderlich ist, kann auch anhand des Werts für die
Grenzflächenspannung ermittelt werden. Typischerweise entsprechen steigende Grenzflächenspannungswerte zwischen der
Monomerphase und der wässrigen Stabilisatorphase einer Verringerung der erforderlichen Konzentration des speziellen
Stabilisators für die erfolgreiche Bildung der Mikrobugeln.

Stabilisatorkonaentrationen über etwa Io Gew.-% bezogen auf
das Monomer, können dazu führen, daß die erhaltene Suspension nicht ganz optimale Eigenschaften hat.
Zu beispielhaften Stabilisatoren gehören Salze von Polyacrylsäure
mit einem Molekulargewicht von über etwa 5ooo (z.B. das Ammonium-, natrium-, Lithium- und Kaliurnsalz), carboxymodif5
zierte Polyacrylamide (z.B. "Cyanamer A-37o" von American
Cyanamid), Copolymerisate von Acrylsäure Lind Dimethylaminoäthylrnethacrylat
und dergl., quarternäre Amine (z.B. General Aniline and Film's "Gafquat 755", ein quarternisiertes PoIyvinylpyrollidoncopolymerisat,
oder Union Carbide's "JR-4oo", eine mit quarternisiertem Arnin substituierte Cellulose) und
carboxymodifizierte Cellulose (z.B. Hercules' "Natrosol CMC
Type >7L", Natriurncarboxymethylcellulose). Machfolgend wird eine
Tabelle angegeben, in der typische Stabilisatoren, die Grenzflächenspannung
derselben mit der Monomerphase und die Konzentration, die, wie festgestellt wurde, zur erfolgreichen Herstellung
der Mikrokugeln erforderlich ist, aufgeführt v/erden.

Obwohl einige Stabilisatoren bei Konzentrationen über Io %,
bezogen auf das Monomer, ihre Funktion ausüben können, können die erhaltenen Suspensionen aus mehreren Gründen unerwünscht
sein, z. B. können sie zu große Mengen von unerwünschten Latexpolymerisat
enthalten. Ferner kann die Einstellung der endgültigen Teilchengröße wegen der gegebenen hohen Viskositäten
schwierig werden, und außerdem kann eine überhöhte Konzentration zu einem Aufheben der Klebrigkeit der erhaltenen PoIyrnerisatkugeln
führen.
Nach- der Polymerisation ist die wässrige Suspension von PoIyrnerisatmikrokugeln
gegen Agglomeration oder Koagulation unter Raumtemperaturbedingungen beständig. Die Polymerisatsuspension
kann eine Konzentration an nichtflüchtigen Festsubstanzen von
etwa Io bis etwa 5o Gew.-% haben. Nach längerem Stehen können
sich die Suspensionen in zwei Phasen trennen, von denen eine wässrig und praktisch frei von Polymerisat und die andere eine
wässrige Suspension der Polymerisatkugeln ist. Der Grad und die Art der Trennung hängen von der Dichte der erhaltenen Polymerisate
ab. Die Abscheidung der Polymerisatphase führt zu einer wässrigen Suspension niedriger Viskosität mit einem Gehalt
an nicht-flüchtigen Festsubstanzen in der Größenordnung
von etwa 75 %. Diese Suspension kann beim Schütteln mit Wasser leicht wieder dispergiert werden.
Gewünschtenfalls kann die wässrige Suspension von Mikrokugeln
unmittelbar nach der Polymerisation zur Bildung eigenklebriger

Überzüge oder Klebstoffe benutzt werden. Die wässrige Suspension kann auch mit Methanol, gesättigten Salzlösungen oder
dergl. koaguliert werden, wonach sich ein Waschen und Trocknen anschließt. Diese trocknen Polymerisatkugeln lassen sich leicht
bei genügendem Bewegen in vielen gewöhnlichen organischen Lösungsmitteln wieder dispergieren. Sobald das Polymerisat jedoch
einmal trocken ist, ist es in Wasser nicht wieder disper-
! gierbar.
Die Polymerisatmikrokugeln haben typischerweise eine kleine
Teilchengröße, wobei der Durchmesser in dem Bereich von etwa 1 bis etwa 25o Mikron und der Durchmesser des größten Teils
der Kugeln in dem Bereich von etwa 5 bis etwa 15o Mikron liegt. Die Kugeln sind normalerweise klebrig und elastomer und in
organischen Lösungsmitteln unlöslich und bilden in den meisten herkömmlichen Lösungsmitteln mit Ausnahme hochpolarer Lösungsmittel,
wie Wasser, Methanol und Äthanol, Dispersionen. Typische geeignete Lösungsmittel sind Äthylacetat, Tetrahydrofuran,
Heptan, 2—Butanon und andere Ketone, Benzol, Cyclohexan und Isopropanol und höhere Alkohole. Die Mikrokugeln absorbieren,
wenn sie in solchen Lösungsmitteln dispergiere sind, das Lösungsmittel
und quellen auf etwa das Doppelte ihres ursprünglichen Durchmessers oder auf etwa das Achtfache ihres ursprünglichen
Volumens auf. Nach dem Dispergieren bleiben die Mikrokugeln, die et v/a 8o 70 Lösungsmittel enthalten, für eine längere
Zeitdauer homogen dispergierto Eine direkt auf eine der Polymerisatkugeln
ausgeübte Kraft verformt diese; doch wird die Kugelforrn nach Aufhebung des Drucks wieder .iiergestelli.».__Beim

Erwärmen schmelzen oder verfließen die Kugeln typischerweise
nicht, sondern behalten ihre Unversehrtheit bei, bis ihre Verkohlungstemperatur
erreicht ist.
Die Mikrokugeln können in Aerosolklebstoffen verwendet v/erden,
sie können auf Substrate als Klebstoff aufgetragen oder mit Bindemitteln vermischt und auf Substrate aufgebracht v/erden,
um wiederholt verwendbare Klebeoberflächen zu schaffen, wie
in der US-PS 3 857 731 beschrieben ist, und sie können mit einem Warmschmelzkleber auf einem Substrat kombiniert werden, um ein ·
positionierbares Warmschmelzklebsystem zu erhalten, wie es in
der deutsche Offenlegungsschrift 27 51 644 beschrieben ist.
Die Erfindung soll anhand der nachfolgenden, nicht-beschränkenden Beispiele, in denen alle Teile Gewichtsteile sind, falls es ;
nicht anders angegeben wird, spezieller erläutert werden.
In einen 3-Liter-Dreihalskolben, der mit Thermometer, Rückflußkühler,
mechanischem Rührer und Vakuum- und Stickstoffeinlaßrohr ausgestattet war, wurden 14o7,7 g deionisiertes Wasser
und 27,ο g "Good Rite K714" (Handelsbezeichnung für eine 15%ige j
wässrige Lösung von Polyacrylsäure mit einem Molekulargewicht von 2oo ooo, von B»F. Goodrich Co. im Handel erhältlich) eingetragen.
Der Kolbeninhalt wurde gerührt, bis dies gesamte Polyacrylsäure gelöst werden warr und konzentriertes Ammoiaiumhy-
droxid wurde zugegeben, bis ein pH von 7,ο erreicht worden v/ar.

Zu dieser Lösung wurden 5oo g Isooctylacrylat und I575 g
"Lucidol 7o" (Handelsbezeichnung für einen zu 7o % aktiven Benzoylperoxidkatalysator, der von Lucidol Division, Pennwalt
Corporation im Handel erhältlich ist) gegeben« Ein Vakuum wurde dann an den Kolbeninhalt angelegt, und der Druck wurde
bis auf 71o mm Hg herabgesetzt und für eine Minute bei diesem Wert gehalten, um gelöste Luft und gelösten Sauerstoff zu
entfernen. Das Vakuum wurde dann mit Stickstoff aufgehoben. Ein Stickstoffstrom wurde über dem Reaktionsgemisch während
der gesamten Reaktionszeit aufrechterhalten« 5 g Emulgator, "Siponate DS-Io" (Handelsbezeichnung für ein im Handel erhältliches
Natriumdodecylbenzolsulfonat, von AXcolac, Ine«),
v/urden zu dem Gemisch gegeben, und das Rühren wurde auf 4oo rpm eingestellt.
Das Reaktionsgemisch wurde dann auf 6o°C erwärmt und für 16 Stunden bei dieser Temperatur gehalten. Sobald sich die Temperatur
zu Beginn 6o°C näherte, wurde eine gelinde Wärmebildung und eine Temperaturerhöhung auf annähernd 7o C festgestellt,
so daß bis zum Aufhören der Wärmebildung gekühlt wurde, wonach der Kolben bei 6o°C gehalten wurde. Nach 16 Stunden
> konnte sich die Suspension auf Raumtemperatur abkühlen, und
j das erhaltene Suspensionspolymerisat wurde durch ein o,25-mm-Sieb
filtriert. Das erhaltene Homopolymerisat enthielt 25,14 % Festsubstanzen, und nach dem Stehen setzten sich die Polymerisatkugeln
an der Oberfläche ab, wurden aber leicht wieder dispergiert. Die mittlere Teilchengröße der Polymerisatkugeln betrug
Io bis 2o Mikron.

Diese Beispiele wurden unter Benutzung der Vorrichtung, des Monomeren und der allgemeinen Verfahrensweise des Beispiels 1
durchgeführt und erläutern den Einsatz verschiedener Stabilisatoren und anionischer Emulgatoren. Es wurde festgestellt, daß
die Mikrokugeln eigenklebrig, unschmelzbar und unlöslich, aber
in organischen Lösungsmitteln dispergierbar waren.

Dieses Beispiel erläutert die Verwendung eines nicht-ionischen oberflächenaktiven Mittels und wurde unter Benutzung der Vorrichtung
und der Arbeitsweise des Beispiels 1 durchgeführt. Das Monomer war Isooctylacrylat (5oo g). Der Stabilisator war ein
Copolymerisat von Acrylsäure und Dimethylaminoäthylmethacrylat im Holverhältnis 5o:5o (5 g), und der Emulgator war "Siponic
Y-5oo-7o", Handelsbezeichnung für einen äthoxylierten Oleylalkohol
von Alcolac, Inc. (5 g). Die wässrige Suspension der auf diese V/eise hergestellten eigenklebrigen Mikrokugeln enthielt

Claims (11)
1. Unschmelzbare, in Lösungsmitteln unlösliche, in Lösungsmitteln dispergierbare, eigenklebrige, elastomere polymere
Mikrokugeln, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß sie aus nicht-ionischen
Monomeren gebildet worden sind und aus mindestens einem oleo—
philen, in V/asser emulgierbaren Alkylacrylat- oder -rnethacrylatester
bestehen.
2. Mikrokugeln nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
der Ester aus der aus n-Butylacrylat, sek.-Butylacrylat, 2-MethyIbuty1acrylat,
4-Methyl-2-pentylacrylat, 2-Athylhexylacrylat,
Isooctylacrylat und Isodecylmethacrylat bestehenden Gruppe gewählt worden ist.
3. Mikrokugeln nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
sie Homopolymerisate sind und der besagte Ester Isooctylacrylat ist.
4. Gegenstand aus einem Substrat mit auf wenigstens einer seiner Oberflächen angeordneten unschmelzbaren, in Lösungsmitteln unlöslichen,
in Lösungsmitteln dispergierbaren, eigenklebrigen, elastomeren polymeren Mikrokugeln, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
die M.ikrokuaeln aus nicht-ionischen Monomeren gebildet worden

sind und aus mindestens einem oleophilen, in Wasser emulgierbaren Alkylacrylat- oder -methacrylatester bestehen.
5. Gegenstand nach Anspruch 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Ester aus der aus n-Butylacrylat, sek.-Butylacrylat,
2-Methylbutylacrylat, 4-Methyl-2-pentylacrylat, 2-Äthylhexylacrylat,
Isooctylacrylat und Isodecylmethacrylat bestehenden Gruppe gewählt worden ist.
6. Gegenstand nach Anspruch 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Mikrokugeln Homopolymerisate sind und der besagte Ester
Isooctylacrylat ist.
7. Suspensionspodymerisationsverfahren zur Herstellung von
Mikrokugeln nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man
a) in einen Reaktionskessel
i) mindestens ein Alkylacrylat- oder -methacrylatester-
monomer und
ii) mindestens einen Emulgator mit einer Konzentration über
ii) mindestens einen Emulgator mit einer Konzentration über
seiner kritischen Micellenkonzentration und
iii) einen im wesentlichen in Wasser unlöslichen Polymerisationsinitiator
und
iv) einen ionischen Suspensionsstabilisator mit einer Grenzflächenspannung
von mindestens etwa 15,ο dyn je cm einträgt,
b) das Reaktionsgemisch im Reaktionskessel bewegt, so daß man eine Emulsion bildet, und
c) die Emulsion unter Aufrechterhalten Has Βρμρ^ρπη prwärm1-.;
so daß elastomere, in Lösungsmitteln dispergierbare polymere Mikrokugeln aus der Emulsion gebildet werden.
8. Verfahren nach Anspruch 7, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man
das Estermonomer aus der aus n-Butylacrylat, sek.-Butylacrylat,
2-Methylbutylacrylat, 4-Methyl-2-pentylacrylat, 2-Äthylhexylacrylat,
Isooctylacrylat und Isodecylmethacrylat bestehenden Gruppe wählt.
9. Verfahren nach Anspruch 7, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der
Initiator in einem AYiteil von etwa o,15 bis etwa o,66 Gew.-%,
bezogen auf das Monomer, vorhanden ist.
10. Verfahren nach Anspruch 7, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
der Stabilisator in einem Anteil bis herauf zu etwa Io % des besagten Monomeren vorhanden ist.
11. Wässrige Suspemsion von eigenklebrigen Mikrokugeln, hergestellt
nach dem Verfahren des Anspruchs 7.
