Description
Die US-PS 36 91 140 beschreibt eigenklebrige Acrylatco
polymerisatmikrokugeln, die als Hauptanteil mindestens
einen Alkylacrylatester und als kleineren Anteil ein
ionisches Monomeres enthalten. Nach dieser US-PS werden
die Mikrokugeln unter Verwendung eines Emulgators in
einer Menge größer als die kritische Micellbildungskon
zentration und unter Verzicht auf zusätzlich zugesetzte
Schutzkolloide hergestellt. Diese bekannten Mikrokugeln
sind Copolymerisate und erfordern ein ionisches Comono
meres als wesentliche Komponente.
Es ist gefunden worden, daß eigenklebrige Mikroku
geln mit physikalischen Eigenschaften ähnlich denen der
US-PS 36 91 140, d. h. mit Eigenklebrigkeit, Unschmelz
barkeit. Dispergierbarkeit, aber Unlöslichkeit in Lösungs
mitteln, hergestellt werden können, die nicht auf Co
polymerisate beschränkt sind, sondern auch Homopolymeri
sate sein können und kein ionisches Comonomer enthalten.
Die Mikrokugeln werden durch wäßriges Suspensionspoly
merisation hergestellt, benötigen aber als einen wesent
lichen Bestandteil bei ihrer Herstellung einen nachfol
gend definierten Suspensionsstabilisator.
Der Gegenstand der Erfindung ist durch die Ansprüche
gekennzeichnet.
Geeignete Alkylacrylat- oder -methacrylatestermonomeren
sind solche, die oleophil und in Wasser emulgierbar
sind, eine begrenzte Wasserlöslichkeit haben und als
Homopolymerisate im allgemeinen eine Glasübergangstempe
ratur unter etwa -20°C aufweisen; als solche kommen
n-Butylacrylat, sek.-Butylacrylat, 2-Methylbutylacrylat,
4-Methyl-2-pentylacrylat, 2-Äthylhexylacrylat, Isooctyl
acrylat, Isodecylmethacrylat in Frage. Alkylacrylat- und
-methacrylatestermonomeren mit Glasübergangstemperaturen
über -20°C (z. B. Butylmethacrylat, Isobornylacrylat)
können gemeinsam mit einem der oben beschriebenen Mono
meren verwendet werden, sofern die Glasübergangstempera
tur des erhaltenen Polymerisats unter etwa -20°C liegt.
Außerdem kann die klebrige Natur der Mikrokugeln durch
Einschluß eines kleineren Anteils eines Nicht-Acrylat-
oder -methacrylatestercomonomeren, das nicht-ionisch und
in Wasser unlöslich ist, wie z. B. Divinylbenzol oder N-
tert.-Octylacrylamid, variiert werden.
Das Verfahren gemäß der Erfindung wird durch wäßrige
Suspensionspolymerisation unter Verwendung eines Emulga
tors in einer Konzentration größer als die kritische
Micellbildungskonzentration durchgeführt. Die kritische
Micellbildungskonzentration ist die kleinste Emulgator
konzentration, die zur Bildung von Micellen erforderlich
ist, und ist für jeden Emulgator etwa unterschiedlich,
wobei geeignete Konzentrationen typischerweise von etwa
1,0×10-4 bis etwa 3,0 Mol je Liter reichen.
Die für die erfolgreiche Herstellung der eigenklebrigen
Mikrokugeln verwendeten Emulgatoren sind vorzugsweise
anionischer Art, und typische Beispiele dafür sind
Natriumdodecylbenzolsulfonat oder Natriumsalze von Alkyl
aryläthersulfonaten. Nicht-ionische Emulgatoren, wie
äthoxylierter Oleylalkohol, können ebenfalls verwendet
werden, und zwar allein oder gemeinsam mit anionischen
Typen. Im letzteren Fall ist es vorteilhaft, wenn der
anionische Emulgator vorherrscht.
Die ionischen Suspensionsstabilisatoren, die die Bildung
der Mikrokugeln unterstützen, werden durch eine Grenz
flächenspannung von mindestens etwa 15,0 dyn je cm
charakterisiert. Unter Grenzflächenspannung ist hier der
Wert zu verstehen, der zwischen der Monomerphase und
einer 1,0gew.-%igen wäßrigen Lösung des Stabilisators
ermittelt wird. Zur Bestimmung der Grenzflächenspannung
kann ein Standardtest, ASTM D-1331-56, "Standard Methods
of Tests for Surface and Interfacial Tension of Solu
tions of Surface Active Agents" benutzt werden. Wenn die
Grenzflächenspannung zwischen der Monomerphase und der
1,0gew-%igen wäßrigen Stabilisatorlösung unter etwa
15,0 dyn je cm liegt, ist eine unzureichende Stabilisie
rung der fertigen polymerisierten Tröpfchen gegeben und
findet Agglomeration statt.
Die ungefähre Konzentration eines einzelnen Stabilisators,
die zur erfolgreichen Herstellung der klebrigen Mikrokugeln
gemäß der Erfindung erforderlich ist, kann auch
anhand des Werts für die Grenzflächenspannung ermittelt
werden. Typischerweise entsprechen steigende Grenzflä
chenspannungswerte zwischen der Monomerphase und der
wäßrigen Stabilisatorphase einer Verringerung der erfor
derlichen Konzentration des speziellen Stabilisators für
die erfolgreiche Bildung der Mikrokugeln. Stabilisator
konzentrationen über etwa 10 Gew.-% bezogen auf das
Monomer, können dazu führen, daß die erhaltene Suspen
sion nicht ganz optimale Eigenschaften hat.
Zu beispielhaften Stabilisatoren gehören Salze von
Polyacrylsäure mit einem Molekulargewicht von über etwa
5000 (z, B. das Ammonium-, Natrium-, Lithium- und Kalium
salz), carboxymodifizierte Polyacrylamide, Copolymerisate
von Acrylsäure und Dimethylaminoäthylmethacrylat, quar
ternäre Amine: ein quarternisiertes Polyvinylpyrollidon
copolymerisat, oder eine mit quarternisiertem Amin
substituierte Cellulose und carboxymodifizierte Cellu
lose: Natriumcarboxymethylcellulose. Nachfolgend wird
eine Tabelle angegeben, in der typische Stabilisatoren,
die Grenzflächenspannung derselben mit der Monomerphase
und die Konzentration, die zur erfolgreichen Herstellung
der Mikrokugeln erforderlich ist, aufgeführt werden.
Obwohl einige Stabilisatoren bei Konzentrationen über
10%, bezogen auf das Monomer, ihre Funktion ausüben
können, können die erhaltenen Suspensionen aus mehreren
Gründen unerwünscht sein, z. B. können sie zu große Mengen
von unerwünschten Latexpolymerisat enthalten. Ferner
kann die Einstellung der endgültigen Teilchengröße wegen
der gegebenen hohen Viskositäten schwierig werden,
außerdem kann eine überhöhte Konzentration zu einem
Aufheben der Klebrigkeit der erhaltenen Polymerisatku
geln führen.
Katalysatoren oder Polymerisationsinitiatoren für die
Polymerisation der Monomeren zur Bildung der erfindungs
gemäßen Mikrokugeln sind normalerweise für freiradikalische
Polymerisation von Acrylatmonomeren geeignet,
öllöslich und haben eine sehr geringe Löslichkeit in
Wasser, wie z. B. Benzoylperoxid. Die Verwendung von
wasserlöslichem Katalysator kann die Bildung von erheb
lichen Mengen Latex bewirken, und die äußerst kleine
Teilchengröße und die Löslichkeit in Lösungsmitteln
desselben sind unerwünscht.
Die Konzentration von Katalysatoren kann die Kugelquali
tät beeinflussen und soll daher in der Größenordnung von
etwa 0,15 bis etwa 0,66 Gew.-% der gesamten Monomeren
und vorteilhafter von etwa 0,25 bis etwa 0,45 Gew.-%
liegen. Katalysatorkonzentrationen unter etwa 0,15 Gew.-%
können eine Agglomeration der Mikrokugeln bewirken,
während Konzentrationen über etwa 0,66 Gew.-% zu Polyme
risaten niedrigen Molekulargewichts führen können, die
nicht alle erwünschten Eigenschaften besitzen.
Nach der Polymerisation ist die wäßrige Suspension von
Polymerisatmikrokugeln gegen Agglomeration oder Koagula
tion unter Raumtemperaturbedingungen beständig. Die
Polymerisatsuspension kann eine Konzentration an nicht
flüchtigen Festsubstanzen von etwa 10 bis etwa 50 Gew.-%
haben. Nach lägerem Stehen können sich die Suspensionen
in zwei Phasen trennen, von denen eine wäßrige und
praktisch frei von Polymerisat und die andere eine
wäßrige Suspension der Polymerisatkugeln ist. Der Grad
und die Art der Trennung hängen von der Dichte der
erhaltenen Polymerisate ab. Die Abscheidung der Polyme
risatphase führt zu einer wäßrigen Suspension niedriger
Viskosität mit einem Gehalt an nicht-flüchtigen Festsub
stanzen in der Größenordnung von etwa 75%. Diese
Suspension kann beim Schütteln mit Wasser leicht wieder
dispergiert werden.
Gewünschtenfalls kann die wäßrige Suspension von Mikro
kugeln unmittelbar nach der Polymerisation zur Bildung
eigenklebriger Überzüge oder Klebstoffe benutzt werden.
Die wäßrige Suspension kann auch mit Methanol oder gesättigten
Salzlösungen koaguliert werden, wonach
sich ein Waschen und Trocknen anschließt. Diese trockenen
Polymerisatkugeln lassen sich leicht bei genügender
Bewegung in vielen üblichen organischen Lösungsmitteln
wieder dispergieren. Sobald das Polymerisat jedoch
einmal trocken ist, ist es in Wasser nicht wieder
dispergierbar.
Die Polymerisatmikrokugeln haben typischerweise eine
kleine Teilchengröße, wobei der Durchmesser in dem
Bereich von etwa 1 bis etwa 250 µm und der Durchmesser
des größten Teils der Kugeln in dem Bereich von etwa 5
bis etwa 150 µm liegt. Die Kugeln sind normalerweise
klebrig und elastomer und in organischen Lösungsmitteln
unlöslich und bilden in den meisten herkömmlichen Lö
sungsmitteln mit Ausnahme hochpolarer Lösungsmittel, wie
Wasser, Methanol und Äthanol, Dispersionen. Typische
geeignete Lösungsmittel sind Äthylacetat, Tetrahydrofuran,
Heptan, 2-Butanon und andere Ketone, Benzol, Cyclo
hexan, Isopropanol und höhere Alkohole. Die Mikroku
geln absorbieren, wenn sie in solchen Lösungsmitteln
dispergiert sind, das Lösungsmittel und quellen auf etwa
das Doppelte ihres ursprünglichen Durchmessers oder auf
etwa das Achtfache ihres ursprünglichen Volumens auf.
Nach dem Dispergieren bleiben die Mikrokugeln, die etwa
80% Lösungsmittel enthalten, für eine längere Zeitdauer
homogen dispergiert. Eine direkt auf eine der Polymderi
satkugeln ausgeübte Kraft verformt dieses; doch wird die
Kugelform nach Aufhebung des Drucks wieder hergestellt.
Beim Erwärmen schmelzen oder verfließen die Kugeln
typischerweise nicht, sondern behalten ihre Unversehrt
heit bei, bis ihre Verkohlungstemperatur erreicht ist.
Die Mikrokugeln können in Aerosolklebstoffen verwendet
werden, sie können auf Substrate als Klebstoff aufgetragen
oder mit Bindemitteln vermischt und auf Substrate
aufgebracht werden, um wiederholt verwendbare Klebeober
flächen zu schaffen, wie in der US-PS38 57 731 be
schrieben ist, und sie können mit einem Warmschmelzkleber
auf einem Substrat kombiniert werden, um ein posi
tionierbares Warmschmelzklebsystem zu erhalten wie es in
der DE-OS 27 51 644 beschrieben ist.
In den
Beispielen sind alle Teile Gewichsteile, falls es nicht
anders angegeben wird.
In einen 3-Liter-Dreihalskolben, der mit Thermometer,
Rückflußkühler, mechanischem Rührer und Vakuum- und
Stickstoffeinlaßrohr ausgestattet war, wurden 1407,7 g
deionisiertes Wasser und 27,0 g einer 15%igen wäßrigen
Lösung von Polyacrylsäure mit einem Molekulargewicht von
200 000 (im Handel erhältlich), eingetragen. Der Kol
beninhalt wurde gerührt, bis die gesamte Polycarylsäure
gelöst, und konzentriertes Ammoniumhydroxid zugegeben,
bis ein pH-Wert von 7,0 erreicht worden war. Zu dieser
Lösung wurden 500 g Isooctylacrylat und 1,75 g eines zu
70% aktiven Benzoylperoxidkatalysators, der im Handel
erhältlich ist, gegeben. Ein Vakuum wurde an den Kol
beninhalt angelegt, der Druck bis auf 94,6 KPa herabge
setzt und für 1 min bei diesem Wert gehalten, um gelöste
Luft und gelösten Sauerstoff zu entfernen. Das Vakuum
wurde dann mit Stickstoff aufgehoben. Ein Stickstoff
strom wurde über dem Reaktionsgemisch während der gesam
ten Reaktionszeit aufrechterhalten. 5 g Emulgator, ein
im Handel erhältliches Natriumdodecylbenzolsulfonat,
wurden zu dem Gemisch gegeben, und das Rühren wurde auf
400 Upm eingestellt.
Das Reaktionsgemisch wurde dann auf 60°C erwärmt und für
16 Stunden bei dieser Temperatur gehalten. Sobald sich
die Temperatur zu Beginn 60°C näherte, wurde eine gelinde
Wärmebildung und eine Temperaturerhöhung auf annähernd
70°C festgestellt, so daß bis zum Aufhören der Wärmebil
dung gekühlt wurde, wonach der Kolben bei 60°C gehalten
wurde. Nach 16 Stunden konnte sich die Suspension auf
Raumtemperatur abkühlen, und das erhaltene Suspensions
polymerisat wurde durch ein 0,25-mm-Sieb filtriert.
Das erhaltene Homopolymerisat enthielt 25,14% Festsubstanzen.
Nach dem Stehen setzten sich die Polymerisatkugeln
an der Oberfläche ab, wurden aber leicht wieder disper
giert. Die mittlere Teilchengröße der Polymerisatkugeln
betrug 10 bis 20 µm.
Diese Beispiele wurden unter Benutzung der Vorrichtung,
des Monomeren und der allgemeinen Verfahrensweise des
Beispiels 1 durchgeführt und erläutern den Einsatz
verschiedener Stabilisatoren und anionischer Emulgatoren.
Es wurde festgestellt, daß die Mikrokugeln eigen
klebrig, umschmelzbar und unlöslich, aber in organischen
Lösungsmitteln dispergierbar waren.
Diese Beispiele wurden unter Benutzung der Vorrichtung
und der allgemeinen Verfahrensweise des Beispiels 1
durchgeführt und erläutern die Herstellung von eigenkleb
rigen Mikrokugeln aus unterschiedlichen Monomeren unter
Benutzung von 5 g Natriumdodecylbenzolsulfonat als
Emulgator und 5 g Copolymerisat aus Acrylsäure und
Dimethylaminoäthylmethacrylat im Molverhältnis 50 : 50 als
Stabilisator.
Dieses Beispiel erläutert die Verwendung eines nicht
ionischen oberflächenaktiven Mittels und wurde unter
Benutzung der Vorrichtung und der Arbeitsweise des
Beispiels 1 durchgeführt. Das Monomer war Isooctylacrylat
(500 g). Der Stabilisator war ein Copolymerisat aus
Acrylsäure und Dimethylaminoäthylmethacrylat im Molver
hältnis 50 : 50 (5 g), und der Emulgator ein äthoxy
lierter Oleylalkohol (5 g).
Die wäßrige Suspension der
auf diese Weise hergestellten eigenklebrigen Mikrokugeln
enthielt 25,3% nicht-flüchtiges Material. Die Mikroku
geln hatten eine mittlere Teilchengröße von 37,4 µm.
Claims (6)
1. Unschmelzbare, in organischen Lösungsmitteln unlösliche,
aber mit Ausnahme von hochpolaren Lösungsmitteln darin dis
pergierbare, eigenklebrige, elastomere polymere Mikrokugeln,
dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß sie aus mindestens einem oleo
philen, in Wasser emulgierbaren Alkylacrylatester oder Alkyl
methacrylatester deren Homopolymerisate eine Glasübergangs
temperatur unter etwa -20°C aufweisen, ohne ionische Comono
mere hergestellt worden sind.
2. Mikrokugeln nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
sie aus Isooctylacrylat hergestellt worden sind.
3. Verfahren zur Herstellung der polymeren Mikrokugeln nach
einem der Ansprüche 1 und 2, wobei mindestens ein monomerer
Alkylacrylatester oder Alkylmethacrylatester, aus der Gruppe
n-Butylacrylat, sek.Butylacrylat, 2-Methylbutylacrylat, 4-
Methyl-2-pentylacrylat, 2-Äthylhexylacrylat, Isooctylacrylat
und/oder Isodecylmethacrylat in Gegenwart mindestens eines
Emulgiermittels in einer oberhalb der kritischen Mizellbil
dungskonzentration liegenden Menge und eines im wesentlichen
wasserunlöslichen Polymerisationsinitiators in wäßrigem Me
dium in einem Reaktionskessel polymerisiert werden, dadurch
gekennzeichnet, daß zusätzlich ein ionischer Suspensions
stabilisator mit einer Grenzflächenspannung von mindestens
etwa 15,0 dyn/cm zugesetzt und der Inhalt unter Bildung einer
Emulsion gerührt und erhitzt wird.
4. Verfahren nach Anspruch 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
der Initiator in einer Menge von 0,15 bis 0,66 Gew.-%,
bezogen auf das Monomere, eingesetzt wird.
5. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 3 bis 4, dadurch
gekennzeichnet, daß der Stabilisator in einer Menge bis zu 10
Gew.-% des Monomeren eingesetzt wird.
6. Verwendung der Mikrokugeln nach einem der vorhergehenden
Ansprüche zum Auftragen als Klebstoff auf Substrate.
