Abstract

In a digital oscilloscope with envelope-curve operating mode, the input of the analog/digital converter is associated with a switching device which shortcircuits the input of the A/D converter in one switching position so that the in each case maximum and minimum amplitude values of the inherent noise are determined during a number of successive evaluation time intervals, from which values the temporal mean value and from this, finally, the difference between these mean values is formed and stored; in the other switching position of the switching device, the input of the A/D converter is supplied with the measurement signal and during the determination and representation of the maximum and minimum amplitude values of the measurement signal, this stored difference value is taken into consideration so as to reduce the representation of the inherent noise. <IMAGE>

Description

The invention relates to a digital oscilloscope according to Ober concept of the main claim.

Digital oscilloscopes of this type are known (news from Rohde & Schwarz, No. 112, pp. 12-17). With the here so-called envelope mode it is possible Lich, despite a certain number of samples the maximum possible along the time axis of the screen fully utilize the sampling frequency of the A / D converter and so even with a large time scale the course of the hochfre to present possible measurement signals as error-free as possible. At a sampling frequency of 200 MHz for the A / D converter and a time axis (screen width) of 100 µsec 20,000 measurement samples can be obtained. Since the Dar position on the screen, however, only for example Allowing 1000 sampling points are in successive Evaluation columns of 100 ns each have 20 samples determined from which then after the envelope function principle, however, only one maxi per evaluation column painter and minimum amplitude value is determined. The for example to 1000 maxima and 1000 minima values compressed function of the measurement signal to be displayed then corresponds to the envelope of the measurement signal. Instead of the determination of the  Maxima and minima values during an evaluation column the envelope function could also be replaced by an analog one Peak rectification.

This envelope mode has the undesirable characteristic shaft, the maximum peak values of the inherent noise of the Representation of the measuring system optically enhanced.

It is an object of the invention to use a digital oscilloscope Envelope creation to create the display that is due to the inherent noise of the measuring system Amplitude values is largely reduced.

This task is based on a digital oscilloscope according to the preamble of the main claim through its drawing features solved. Advantageous further training result from the subclaims.

According to the invention, for example, once at Switch on the envelope mode or if necessary also at certain intervals during the envelope curve Operating mode repeated by averaging each time temporally adjacent maximum values and averaging from respectively temporally adjacent minimum values of time mean of the positive and negative peaks values of the system's own noise, the differences The limit of these two averages is then a measure of the mean amplitude of the self-noise of the measuring system. By taking appropriate account of the evaluation and representation of the subsequently in the envelope operation Art in the usual way evaluated measurement signal can the proportion of self-noise can be significantly reduced. When presenting an ideal and not with noise affected sinusoidal measurement signal is no longer as before  a parallel double sine Darge on the screen but just a slightly thickened single line Sinusoid. With a device according to the invention can the noise impression and the measuring accuracy by approx. 6 dB be improved. Taking into account the difference values during the subsequent envelope evaluation happen in different ways according to the dependent claims. The principle of self-noise reduction according to the invention is not only applicable to digital oscilloscopes with envelope Assessment applicable but could just as well be example used with keyed peak rectifiers , where the noise is also annoying can be. Here, too, in the sense of the invention Own noise can be reduced accordingly.

The invention will now be described more schematically Drawings explained in more detail using an exemplary embodiment.

Fig. 1 shows the basic circuit diagram of a digital oscilloscope with envelope mode, in which by means of an analog-to-digital converter 1 controlled via a sampling control circuit 2, the high-frequency measurement signal 5 fed to the input 3 via a switch 4 is sampled and converted into corresponding digital values . In a closing envelope evaluation device 6 , the maximum and minimum amplitude values of the measurement signal 5 are determined in a known manner during predetermined evaluation times S , which are then stored in a memory 7 and are shown as successive sampling points 8 on the screen 9 of the oscilloscope. This representation corresponds to the envelope curve of the measurement signal 5 . If the measurement signal is an ideal sine without noise, a double line 17 is shown on the screen 9 due to the inherent noise of the measurement system.

In order to avoid this disadvantage, an additional evaluation device is provided according to the invention, which works controlled as follows via a control device 10 :

A/D-Wandlers 1 also gegen Masse kurzgeschlos sen. When switching on the envelope mode on the oscilloscope cop the control device 10 is activated and thus the switch 4 is opened and the switch 11 which is open in the normal envelope mode is closed, the input of the A / D converter 1 is therefore short-circuited to ground. At the same time, the means 12 and 13 for averaging, an adding circuit 14 and a memory 15 are activated. Thus, only the maximum and minimum amplitude value of the self-noise of the measuring system is evaluated in the envelope mode, as shown in Fig. 2 for three successive evaluation columns S 1 , S 2 and S 3 . With a time axis of 100 µsec per line and a permissible number of 1000 sampling points, 8 per line, the evaluation time is 100 ns per evaluation column. With a sampling frequency of 100 MHz for the A / D converter, this is 20 samples per evaluation column. With a short-circuited input of the A / D converter, only the noise spectrum shown schematically in FIG. 2 is evaluated, namely a maximum value 20 and a minimum value 21 is determined during the evaluation column S 1 , while a maximum value 22 and a maximum is determined during the evaluation column S 2 value 23 , during the evaluation column S 3, a maximum value 24 and a minimum value 25, and in all successive further 1000 columns corresponding to the other 1000 columns, not shown, further maximum and minimum values. From these maximum and minimum values of the successive evaluation columns, which are determined chronologically one after the other in a row, the mean value of all maximum values 20, 22, 24 etc. is formed in a device 12 connected downstream of the envelope evaluation device 6 , in the same way in the device 13 each because the average of all minimum values 21, 23, 25 etc. In a subsequent adding circuit 14 , the difference D is then formed from these average values A and B of the maximum values and minimum values of the positive and negative intrinsic noise peaks, and this difference value D is finally in the Memory 15 stored. This averaging and difference formation is controlled by the control device 10 associated with the scanning device 2 , depending on the required accuracy in several successive evaluation columns, it is not absolutely necessary to use a full line for this, it would also suffice, only for a few successive ones Valuation columns to calculate the mean and the difference.

If this difference formation carried out over several evaluation columns is completed, the switch 11 is opened again via the control device 10 and the switch 4 is closed, at the same time the devices 12, 13 and 15 are deactivated, so that now a conventional envelope evaluation of the input 3 applied measurement signals 5 can be performed. However, the maximum and minimum values determined in turn in successive evaluation columns are not fed directly to the memory 7, but rather to an interposed evaluation device 16 , in which the previously determined difference value D is taken into account in the sense of reducing the system's own noise. In the evaluation device 16 , for example, the previously determined difference value D can be subtracted from each determined maximum value of the measurement signal and supplied to the memory 7 as a corrected maximum value while the minimum value remains uncorrected. Conversely, the difference value D can be added as a correction value in the evaluation device 16 to the minimum value of the measurement signal determined for each evaluation column, while the maximum value remains uncorrected. A third possibility is to correct both the maximum value and split the minimum value of each evaluation and subtract per evaluation column of the determined maximum value in each case half the difference value D / 2 and hinzuzuaddieren to the respective minimum value of half the difference value D / 2. This corrective measure no longer writes a double-stroke sine 17 but rather a slightly thicker single stroke 18 on the screen 9 .

The self-noise envelope evaluation carried out when the device is switched on, with a short-circuited input of the A / D converter, can, if appropriate, also be repeated at specific time intervals, for this purpose the control unit 10 only has to be reactivated at certain time intervals.

The averaging and difference formation according to the invention during the self-noise assessment with a short-circuited Receipt and subsequent consideration of this difference value thus determined during the actual Envelope mode of operation for the measurement signal can itself understandable also in a suitably programmed Microprocessor, especially if the actual envelope evaluation in one such a microprocessor is carried out.
