Abstract

The airbag is inflated by a single gas generator at a programmed inflation rate. A control vent (4) can be opened to slow the inflation rate. The vent has a solenoid valve (5) operated by a switch (8) which monitors the fitting of the seat belt clasp into the seat belt lock. The fitting of the seat belt closes the solenoid circuit to move the valve into the venting position. If the solenoid is not powered the vent is closed and the airbag inflates at maximum rate. The maximum inflation rate is applied, e.g. when the seat occupant has not fitted the seat belt and a collision is detected. ADVANTAGE - Only one gas generator required per airbag; simple variation in airbag inflation rate.

Description

The invention relates to a restraint system for occupants of motor vehicles, with one in front of the occupant or his Seat arranged in the motor vehicle, auto in an accident inflatable gas bag using a gas generator (Airbag) and a safety device assigned to this occupant belt with actuated control device for it Inflation pressure of the gas bag.

Restraint systems in which an occupant through safety Belt and gas bag protected from injuries in accidents are generally known.

It is desirable to have the inflation pressure dependent of changing whether the respective occupant's safety belt or not.

In this context it is known, for example, equip the gas bag with two gas generators, which at an accident will both ignite if the occupant is has not fastened. This way the gas bag particularly inflated. If, on the other hand, the seat belt was created, only one gas ignites in an accident nerator, so that the airbag is correspondingly less tight is blown. This takes into account that the gas bag  is less stressed if the occupant Is strapped in. Accordingly, a diminisher is sufficient inflation pressure. This also ensures that otherwise possible minor facial injuries u. Like. Because of a very inflated gas bag be avoided.

For the rest, it is known from DE-PS 22 53 764, one to control two-stage inflatable airbag such that at the second in an accident with low impact intensity Stage only takes effect after a certain time delay, while both in an accident with high impact intensity Work stages practically simultaneously to make the gas bag special inflate quickly and plump.

The object of the invention is now a structurally easy executable way to create the inflation pressure of the Gas bags to optimally adapt to the respective needs.

This task is the beginning of a restraint system specified type according to the invention solved in that the Airbag has a controllable outflow opening, which at the seat belt is opened and the seat belt is not fastened Seat belt is closed or severely throttled. The invention is based on the general idea that Inflating the gas bag always for the maximum need to generate the necessary amount of gas and thus, if necessary derive existing gas excess.

This concept is particularly easy to implement by the discharge opening controlled by a changeover valve which is between a closed or throttle position and an open position is switchable.

To control the valve, it is expediently provided that the buckle of the seat belt with a switch valve to actuate actuating switch to couple, which at Locking the seat belt in the buckle from its Assigned the closing or throttle position of the changeover valve neten condition in its the open position of this valve corresponding state switches.

For this purpose, the changeover valve can be actuated electromagnetically, the electromagnet working against a return spring, the changeover valve in its closing or throttling position seeks to trace. In this case the switch is as simple electrical switch designed which the electrical magnets when the seat belt is locked in the lock connects to a power source or otherwise from the Power source decouples.

It is advantageous that the changeover valve is Closes or throttles if the power source should fail.

In the following, the invention is exemplified on the basis of the Drawing explained.

Dabei zeigtIt shows

Fig. 1 eine schaltplanmäßige Darstellung eines Gassackes mit durch Umschaltventil gesteuerter Abströmöffnung, wobei das Umschaltventil seine Schließstellung einnimmt, und Fig. 1 is a circuit diagram representation of an airbag with the outflow opening controlled by the changeover valve, the changeover valve assuming its closed position, and

Fig. 2 is a representation corresponding to FIG. 1 with the changeover valve open.

In a housing 1 , which is arranged, for example, in the hub area of a steering handwheel of a motor vehicle or in a dashboard or instrument holder of this vehicle, a folded gas bag 2 is accommodated together with its gas generator 3 , which, in the event of an accident, is signaled by signals, not shown, by impact sensors or the like. is automatically ignited and inflates the gas bag 2 like a balloon.

An outflow line 4 leads out of the interior of the gas bag 2 and is controlled by a changeover valve 5 . This switch valve 5 is urged by a return spring 6 in its closed position shown in FIG. 1 or held in this position and can be switched by energizing an electric magnet 7 against the force of the return spring 6 in the open position shown in Fig. 2. As soon as the electromagnet 7 is switched off again by the power source, the changeover valve 5 is brought back into the position shown in FIG. 1 by the return spring 6 .

A switch 8 , which is arranged in an electrical circuit formed by the electromagnet 7 and a battery 9 , is used to actuate the electromagnet 7 .

The switch 8 is drivingly coupled to the buckle 10 of a seat belt 11 , which together with the gas bag 2 serves to secure an occupant in the event of an accident. If the locking part 12 of the seat belt 11 is not inserted into the buckle 10 , the switch 8 is opened according to FIG. 1. If, on the other hand, the locking part 12 according to FIG. 2 is pushed into the lock 10 , the switch 8 assumes its closed position in which the electromagnet 7 is energized and accordingly the changeover valve 5 assumes the open position shown in FIG. 2.

Depending on whether the changeover valve 5 is open or closed, the gas bag 2 is inflated by the gas generator 3 in a different manner in an accident.

If the seat belt 11 is not used by the occupant, ie if the locking part 12 of the seat belt 11 is not inserted into the lock 10 , the changeover valve 5 remains closed, so that in the event of an accident the entire gas quantity generated by the gas generator 3 for inflating the gas bag 2 is available, which is inflated accordingly.

On the other hand, if the seat belt 11 is put on by the occupant and the locking part 12 is inserted into the lock 10 , the changeover valve 5 is opened, so that part of the gas generated by the gas generator 3 in an accident via the discharge line 4 thus opened against one of this line formed or arranged in this line throttle resistance stood (not shown) and only a reduced amount of gas for inflating the airbag 2 is available, which is accordingly inflated relatively soft, as is desirable for a belted occupant.
