Abstract
Description
The invention is concerned with a photochemical Fixing process that quickly stabilizes a printed image can be.
It is applicable in ink jet printers that have a fuser level contain. However, it can also be used in other print image generators Find application, e.g. B. in a fax, in a copier or in a laser printer. The invention also relates to that Dye mixture that is used to generate the printed image on a Plain paper or a normal film is applied, the Way of applying for the invention not of is of primary importance. It is capable of all applied print images, be it through an inkjet nozzle be angry with an electrically charged and with image drum exposed to an intensity-modulated laser beam applied or be on a copier image drum applied to fix photochemically. The invention works with a light above the infrared range, especially with a UV light from a light generator the printed image (writing or image) on the paper or the film is delivered. The dye created by this light is fixed - a polymerization or a comes as a fixation Curing in question - is a substance added by Absorbing the light mentioned on them is curable or polymerizable. The color pigments are thereby integrated into the network structure and solidified (fixed).
This enables the invention to quickly print the image fixate and at the same time work energy-saving, because the im Known prior art fixation by heating can. The infrared dryer still used in EP 284 215 in an inkjet printer as a fusing stage can be used as the carrier significant losses of this device are eliminated according to the invention.
According to advantageous further development and specification, the fixation radiation above the infrared radiation with the Printing operations are coordinated (claim 4). For this the UV light generator (claim 3), according to an excimer lamp EP 254 111 or in particular according to DE-P 43 02 465 can only be then switched on when a paper is provided with a printed image becomes. Only then do electrical losses fall for this fixation compared to that by using the mentioned tube the infrared heating levels can be kept low. Additional advantages are the low noise of this fixation, because no fans are required, and the immediate Ready for operation - after switching on the lamp - because the pressure-delaying waiting phase until a thermal fixer is warmed up, not applicable.
The photochemical fixing can be done by an initiator or Catalyst are caused or accelerated (Reactant), if not the cross-linking or curing Component (polymerizer) itself already fixing under Allows light influence. In polymerizable or curable Substance can contain a solvent, in which case then the color pigments for an ink dissolved in the inkjet printer are (claim 12).
Corresponds to the absorption spectrum of the solvent itself not sufficient with the generated light spectrum of the UV generator, a catalyst can the dye mixture be added, the absorption maximum with the Emission maximum of the UV light generator coincides. It acts then catalytically to the crosslinking or curing reaction (photochemical fixation) that the color pigments quickly and stabilized with low energy.
Between the catalytic influence of the catalyst and the the direct polymerization of the solvent Use of an initiator that contributes to the photochemical reaction UV light causes and is chemically involved.
A mixture of two or more can be used as the reactant Photo initiators are used (claim 13).
Even without using thermal fixing steps, a Document authenticity is guaranteed, as is the case with laser printers and copiers are already granted today. Not today document-correct print images of an inkjet printer with the invention the products of copiers and laser printers equal.
Had been mentioned that in an inkjet printer that Ink mixture forming printing ink contains a solvent, because the methods of applying the Dye in a liquid phase in an inkjet printer require (claim 10), but the invention can also be one dry fabric to a dry toner - a thermoplastic - add the crosslinking of the dry toner underneath UV light induced and accomplished.
Will the solvent mentioned to form the printing ink added, so the larger volume of the ink Increased mobility of the initiator and polymerizer molecules, so that they can more easily find a reaction partner. This accelerates the setting on the surface and it less unreacted monomers remain.
Regardless of the color of the color pigments in the Dye mixture can be the same polymerizable or curable Substance or the same polymerization or curing favoring, acting as a catalyst or initiator UV activator can be used.
One lifts as a particularly advantageous form of use Invention of the inkjet printer, he is with the photochemical fixation through the open or "closed" Spotlight has become a print image generator that is true to documents Print copies are generated, without increasing energy consumption achieved and the low operating noise of a Inkjet printer not increased. The absorbency of the Thanks to the invention, paper is no longer essential Regardless, the fixation can be done in no time the solvent of the ink polymerize, so that also no unwanted curls of the paper are obtained.
A side effect of document authenticity is that a Users with wet hands cannot print the image they just created can blur more and the generated ones in the paper tray Documents will no longer be colored on both sides if that just filed document is not yet dry and already one new document is placed on the paper tray.
The application of the should be emphasized once again excimer radiators mentioned in the mentioned Patent applications are explained in detail and only one narrow-band emission in the UV range between 120 nm and 360 nm with only a few nanometers (about 1 to 2 nm) in width. These narrow-band emission can be well on the absorption range of the polymerizable substance in the dye mixture, the one Contain solvent or can be a solid, or the the polymerization accelerating UV reactant vote.
The proposals according to the invention should be based on the example of Inkjet printers are deepened in their understanding.
Fig. 1 is a section through a conventional inkjet printer, but already supplemented by a UV fixing stage 2 , which is arranged downstream of the print head 1 in the direction V of the paper.
Fig. 2 is an enlargement of the area in the mentioned ink jet printer, in which the print head 1 and the UV light emitting lamp 2 are arranged.
Fig. 3 is an example of a planar radiator as fixing unit. 2
Fig. 4 is an example of an open dielectric barrier discharge with emitter 2 ', which in addition to UV radiation also brings electron beams and radicals to the paper.
Fig. 1 zeigt ein Schema eines üblichen Tintenstrahldruckers. Fig. 1 shows a schematic of a conventional ink jet printer. It has a paper stack 31 in its lower area in which a plurality of A4 sheets of paper or foils to be printed are stored. The paper is fed flat to a printhead 1 via a deflection roller 32 via a transport with rollers, rollers and possibly belts, which is not highlighted. There it is printed with an ink 1 c, be it characters or images, in order to be subsequently placed on an outside tray 33 in the feed direction. In front of the tray 33 and after the inkjet application unit 1 , in the exemplary embodiment even immediately thereafter, a UV lamp 2 is attached, which preferably directs its light onto the area of the paper just printed. Due to its pure UV light emission, the lamp 2 can be brought very close to the paper 31 a, since it does not emit heat radiation that could damage the paper or the printed image. The lamp 2 can - as schematically shown in FIG. 1 - be arranged under a flap 28 . The cover 28 should be opaque to prevent damage to the human eye. The cover, which is opened for exchanging the print head or the ink container, can advantageously be used.
The printing ink application area and the fixation with the lamp 2 are emphasized in FIG. 2. V denotes the feed direction of the paper 31 a. The printing ink application unit 1 consists of a printing head 1 a provided with small nozzles, from which printing ink 1 c emerges in various ways and is applied to the paper or film 31 a. Above the immediate print head 1 a, the printing ink container 1 b is arranged. The entire printing ink application unit 1 can be moved in a controlled manner transversely to the feed direction V of the paper on a linkage, it is controlled via flexible electrical connections by a control unit (not shown in more detail) in such a way that exactly those micro nozzles of the print head 1 a ink 1 c are applied at exactly the right time spray, spray or radiate the paper 31 a to produce a desired print image.
An alternative is the print head or the ink nozzle to be arranged along the entire width of the paper so that none mechanical movement of the application unit is more required.
The print image produced with the printing ink 1 c is exposed to UV light immediately after application to the paper 31 a, which is formed in the example by an excimer lamp 2 . It emits a narrow-band emission in the UV range between 120 nm and 360 nm, which is only a few nanometers wide. It is explained in more detail in P 43 02 465 and is only indicated schematically here with the concentric electrodes 21 , 25 , between which there is a dielectric 22 , 24 which defines an annular discharge space 23 . The outer electrode 25 is transparent to the radiation which arises in the discharge space and which arises due to dielectrically impeded discharge with brief formation of excimers. With each rise in voltage at the electrodes, the short-term formation of excimers is repeated, so that a power regulation is possible by the choice of the excitation frequency or by modulation of groups of voltage pulses.
However, the coaxial structure is not mandatory, it can a planar shape of the excimer lamp can be chosen because that Gas mixture in the lamp has almost atmospheric pressure.
Due to the influence of UV light on the print medium (paper, light cardboard or foils), a photochemical reaction is triggered in the applied printing ink 1 c. Although the ink is at least partially already absorbed by the paper when it is applied by the printing unit 1 , there is still considerable moisture which is removed by the UV light L by means of the photochemical crosslinking reaction. The solvent component forming the liquid of the ink is cured or crosslinked (polymerized) by the UV influence. For this purpose, it is favorable if the absorption maximum of the solvent component corresponds exactly or approximately with the mean wavelength of the radiator 2 . If this cannot be ensured, a catalyst is added which has a catalytic effect on the actual polymerization reaction (so-called photoinitiators). Examples of components of the ink are DMP (dimethyloxydiphenylethanone), HMPP, ITX, EPD, AS (acrylic acid), NDEA (N-methyldiethanolamine), TMPTA (trimethylolpropane triacrylate), BPH (benzophenone), the latter in conjunction with other initiators.
Depending on the power of the UV lamp 2 used , the width in which the radiation L acts on the printed image can be varied. With only low power, a wider range of action and a particularly close arrangement of the radiator 2 to the printed image carrier 31 a can be selected. The speed of the paper feed V can also be adjusted to this. It should be noted, however, that despite the proximity of the paper, the printhead is not within the range of the emitter without shielding.
The excimer emitters used in the example do not need to be cooled with a small number of pages per minute. This benefits the operating noise of the already very quiet inkjet printer. Since the concentric excimer emitters 2 also have an elongated shape with a small cross section, only a small amount of additional space is required for their attachment to the compact inkjet printer. The planar lamp shape ( FIG. 3) can be assigned to a planar section of the paper transport path. Likewise, a lame with non-planar but parallel dielectrics can be adapted to any paper transport path.
The quiet noise of an inkjet printer is very low, since no thermal fixing stages and therefore no cooling fans are required, so that the noise level is reduced to a minimum in stand-by mode. This can also be connected to switching off the lamp 2 , so that the inkjet printer shown makes almost no noise. Only when printing is initiated is the paper feed activated and the lamp 2 can be switched on. Due to its UV spectrum and the photochemical fixing reaction in the printed image generated, the radiator 2 does not require any preheating and is ready for operation and fixing immediately after being switched on. After all the papers or foils 31 a have been run through for the respective printing process, the emitter 2 can be switched off again. This can be easily coordinated by the control of the inkjet printer. This is accompanied by an even lower energy consumption, so that the inkjet printer shown is even better than z. B. Laser printers can be used on stand-alone PCs, where the load on the printer is usually low, but spontaneous readiness for printing is desired.
In addition, it should be noted that the printing ink application unit 1 is not limited to black ink alone, but may well be suitable for multi-color images. The colors can be applied simultaneously to the carrier 31 a in a print job. For this purpose, different ink containers 1 b, 1 b ', 1 b''and different print heads 1 a, 1 a', 1 a '' can be arranged next to one another and at the same time apply their respective dissolved color pigments to the paper in order to produce a multicolored image. All differently colored inks can contain the polymerizable material mentioned or additionally the UV reaction medium mentioned.
A close association of UV lamp 2 and ink application unit 1 is advantageous in order to keep the exposure time of the moist ink in the printed image carrier 31 a only very short. Then it is also avoided that the paper curls due to a stronger application of ink, this avoids the immediately occurring radiation L of the UV lamp 2 . With the close assignment, however, it should be avoided that a radiation influence hits the ink application unit.
Except in a separate (self-contained) UV lamp 2 ( Fig. 1 and 2), the ultraviolet radiation can also be generated directly above the paper surface in air with an arrangement 2 '( Fig. 4). For this purpose, the second, usually the grounded, electrode 25 'is arranged below the plane of the paper web 3 . When a high voltage is applied, the dielectric barrier discharge (barrier discharge) ignites directly in the space 23 'between the first electrode 21 surrounded by a dielectric 22 and the paper.
In this embodiment, no absorption of the UV radiation occurs in the wall 24 of the lamp 2 . In addition, the fixation of the typeface will be supported by electron bombardment or radicals formed from the gas discharge.
It should also be mentioned that there are UV-curing substances with photoinitiators that require only a low power of the radiator 2 , 2 'to polymerize or cure quickly. In addition to the action of UV light in a narrow spectral range, the additional action of electron and other radiation from the open discharge 2 ', 23 ', can further accelerate the polymerization or curing.
An embodiment not shown relates to one Plotter using pens for drawing and at who used no ink and no toner, but an ink becomes. Here, too, the ink can be polymerized with the crosslinkable solvent components mentioned a quick Allow fixation of the plotted picture. After at one portable small plotter the image carrier (the slide or that Paper) and an X-Y-movable pin described or provided with drawings, a movable UV radiation source can be used, which retracted pen once across the fixed paper is moved.
If a large standing plotter is used, the one with a Roll of moving paper is loaded, only in the Y direction movable pin, so can above the pulley and in addition to the travel arrangement for the pen, a UV lamp across Direction of travel of the paper or parchment arranged and after completion - or several times in the course of Completion - the clamped paper or parchment from Start to end on the UV light generator that is then switched on be driven past.
