Beim Eisenbahnoberbau wird es bei vielen Schienenbefestigungskonstruktionen für notwendig erachtet, zwischen Schiene und Schwelle eine elastische Zwischenlage einzuschalten. Die Zwischenlage hat den Zweck, den Schienendruck gleichmäßig zu verteilen, Stöße zu dämpfen und das Wandern der Schienen zu erschweren. Die Deutsche Bundesbahn verwendet mit Erfolg 5 mm starke Blättchen aus Pappel- und Buchenholz (s. Abb. i). Neuerdings werden auch Zwischenlagen aus Gummi gefertigt. Sie haben den Vorteil, daß sich die elastischen Eigenschaften beliebig festlegen lassen. Abb. 2 zeigt eine solche Gummiplatte. Da Gummi inkompressibel ist, haben die Rippen den Zweck, Ausweichmöglichkeiten beim Druck zu schaffen und damit die Elastizität zu erzielen. Diese gerippten Gummiplatten werden gegenwärtig auf völlig ebene Flächen gelegt, Das sog.Wandern der Schienen, das imkomplizierten Kräftespiel beim Befahren des Gleises seine Ursache hat, bringt häufig eine starke Verschiebung und manchmal sogar eine Zerstörung der elastischen Zwischenlagen mit sich.
