It is known to improve the running of carbon brushes by
that they are divided into several partial brushes standing one behind the other in the tangential direction
will. Such brushes have already been designed as so-called spreading brushes,
which are wedge-shaped on their head, as explained in Figure i.
gezeichnet, einstellt.A wedge-shaped head piece i .presses the two part brushes 2 and 3 in the holder box apart and against the side walls. The wedge angle α has generally been chosen to be i2o °, since the wedge forces which occur are completely sufficient to press the upper part of the brushes against the box walls. The frictional forces between the brush and commutator, which lead to the partial brushes being tilted, as shown in exaggerated form in Figure 2, are not taken into account. This is particularly disadvantageous in railway operations, because the motor is expected to change direction frequently, so that the two brushes form two different tracks. In Figure 2, this process is shown in the partial brush 3, namely AB is the no longer in engagement track, which comes from the operation in a direction of rotation with the clock, while the now still engaged track BC is against during operation clockwise as shown.
Keilwinkel a liegen etwa zwischen 3o .und 70°.According to the invention, this deficiency is: avoided by the
Selects the wedge angle of the piece i so acute that the forces acting on the wedge are sufficient,
to spread the brushes over their entire length and thus also to the bottom of the system
to force on the box side walls. It turns out that this is most beneficial with
a wedge angle a of only 5o ° can be achieved. In picture 3 you can see such a design
shown. The side forces that occur are not yet so great that they
prevent the brushes from moving in the box. The one between the brushes and the box wall
the resulting friction is more of an advantage, as it reduces the contactless time,
when the brushes fly off the commutator due to some irregularity
occurs. It has been shown that this contactless time when running with
A wedge angle of about 50 ° can be reduced by about 10% compared to a
Execution without side forces; the brushes, i.e. without significant wall friction.
This corresponds roughly to the theoretically possible optimum, that by such wall friction
is attainable at all. The angle may deviate from 5o °. But the angle will

Wedge angles a are approximately between 30 and 70 °.
etwa zylindrisch gekrümmte Flächen auszubilden, vorzugsweise konvexe Flächen an
The inclined surfaces on the heads of the two brush parts 2 and 3 and
the wedge surfaces of the pressure piece i can be flat. But it is also possible
to form approximately cylindrically curved surfaces, preferably convex surfaces
the brushes and matching concave surfaces on the pressure piece. This will make the
