In order to keep the manufacturing costs and thus the price of the device as low as possible, but nevertheless to enable the mascara to be dosed properly, at least the part (7) of the applicator (5) forming the application surface consists of a material which promotes the liquid mascara by capillary action. The material can be a directional fiber material or a porous sintered plastic material (Fig. 1).

Description

The invention relates to a device for applying flowable mascara (mascara) with the features according to the preamble of claim 1.

Devices for applying ink to the eyelashes for cosmetic purposes, so-called mascara sticks, are known. They have an applicator, which can have different designs, but in any case is designed so that the eyelashes are encompassed during the application process by the profiled application surface of the applicator and can thus be isolated, combed and also colored all around. In a known embodiment, the applicator is constructed as a brush, the bristles of which are arranged spirally. Furthermore, applicators in the form of an application pad made of porous flexible plastic foam (DE-A 34 34 405) and of a relatively solid material with a rib profile (US-A 33 63 635) are also known.

A generally criticized disadvantage of the known mascara sticks is that when the mascara is taken up - usually a paste or very viscous liquid - by immersing the applicator in an ink supply between the bristles, on the application pad or between the ribs of the rib profile too much ink accumulates. As a result, in the beginning too much ink is applied to the eyelashes, ie the application process is uneven. An even distribution of the mascara on the eyelashes is therefore only possible with great care.

In order to remedy this disadvantage, maskara sticks of the type specified above have also been proposed, in which the mascara is accommodated in a reservoir of the device and is supplied to the interior of the applicator via a connecting channel (DE-A 36 15 593). By applying pressure by means of a piston accommodated in the device, a predetermined amount of ink can be expressed through openings of the applicator opening towards the application surface, whereby the profiling of the application surface is wetted. The piston stroke is dimensioned or adjustable in such a way that only the amount of ink required for the respective use reaches the application surface, thereby avoiding excessive application and smearing of the device which occurs over time. However, these known mascara pens are very complex and therefore relatively expensive due to the device for feeding and metering the mascara.

Devices for applying make-up liquid, but not maskara sticks, are also generally known in the cosmetics field, the applicator of which has an application tip made of a capillary-promoting material (DE-A 27 05 576, US-P 33 99 020, US-A 36 05 764). The applicators of these known devices serve to apply the make-up liquid largely over a large area and for this purpose have a tapered or even - in the case of eyeliner drawers (ink liner) - tapered application area. In the case of such applicators made of a capillary-promoting material, the ability of the material to utilize liquid by capillary action in the longitudinal direction of the applicator towards the application surface or To promote peak orders.

The object of the present invention is to propose a device for applying mascara which, with a considerably simpler construction and therefore a low price, enables the mascara to be fed and dosed correctly to the application area.

According to the invention, this object is achieved by the configuration according to the characterizing part of claim 1.

Due to the use of a liquid by capillary action promoting material for at least the part forming the application surface of the applicator, which is connected to the liquid mascara in the reservoir, it is ensured that only that amount of mascara is added to the application surface by capillary action that by the application process is removed. The replenishment of mascara to the application area is therefore self-regulating, so that an excess leading to an excessive order cannot occur. The amount of mascara to be applied to the eyelashes can be determined by the number of application or combing operations. Due to the automatic regulation of the correct amount of mascara, no further constructive measures are required in order to deliver a correctly metered amount to the application area. The applicator can therefore be in constant communication with the amount of liquid received in the reservoir without fear of leakage or smearing. The entire applicator expediently consists of the capillary-conveying material and projects into the reservoir with a connecting part.

In particular in the case of a capillary-conveying material which consists of fibers running parallel to one another, the conveying effect for liquid in the longitudinal direction of the fiber is very pronounced, whereas it is only slight across the longitudinal direction of the fiber. It is therefore known in the art that cross-sectional interruptions in such a material reduce the ability to convey liquid and must therefore be avoided. This may be one reason why capillary-promoting material has so far been proposed for cosmetic make-up devices, the applicator of which has a closed application surface or application tip, but has never been used for mascara pens, the application surface of which is essentially a pen-shaped or cylindrical applicator arranged and interrupted by a strong profile.

In the device according to the invention, the conveying effect transverse to the longitudinal direction of the applicator, which is reduced by the interruptions of the application area in the form of ring ribs, is now used in order not to overly fill the cavities of the rib profile with mascara and thereby to obtain the self-regulation effect mentioned above.

The capillary-promoting material can be a directional fiber material or a porous sintered plastic material. To enable perfect capillary delivery, the cosmetic ink must be sufficient be fluid or liquid. Pigment dispersions with very fine-grain pigments, as are already known and used in eyeliner devices (ink liners), are suitable. These dispersions are conveyed through the capillary material in the manner described above.

The delivery intensity can be determined by the type and selection of the known fibrous or sintered capillary materials. If the cosmetic ink is received in the reservoir of the device in a free-flowing manner, less capillarity of the material may be indicated. The cosmetic ink can in turn be accommodated in a wick-shaped storage element as a reservoir. In this case, the capillarity or capillary suction effect of the applicator must exceed the capillary holding effect of the storage element and, as a rule, will therefore be relatively strong.

The capillary-promoting material which is known per se and which is used according to the invention for the applicator permits the formation of all known profiles which are known and suitable for the intended use. Thus, when the application device according to the invention is designed as a mascara pin, the profile of the applicator can be designed in the form of ring ribs which are sawtooth-shaped in the axial section and run around the rest of the cylindrical circumference of the applicator. An optionally sawtooth-shaped helical rib can also be provided. The ribs can also be interrupted as required or provided only on one long side of the applicator.

The applicator can be profiled, for example, by grinding with appropriately profiled discs. In the case of sintered plastic material, it is also conceivable to produce the profiling during the sintering or molding process of the applicator.

Instead of an essentially cylindrical shape, the applicator can also be conical or tapered outwards with a curvature. An applicator tapering to a tip at its free end, particularly if it otherwise tapers over its entire length and has a slight barrel-shaped curvature towards the outside, can be used with particular advantage at the same time as a mascara pencil and as an ink liner. In this way, the device according to the invention fulfills two purposes in one.

The device shown in Fig. 1 according to the invention has a tubular shaft 1 made of plastic, which forms a reservoir 2 for cosmetic ink in its interior. The shaft 1 is closed at its front end by a sealing body 3, through which a connecting part 4 of an applicator, designated as a whole by 5, is guided and kept sealed. The reservoir 2 can be a wick-shaped non-woven or fiber material which receives the cosmetic ink in a capillary-bound form. On the front end of the shaft 1 is the applicator 5 covering plastic cap 6 attached.

The applicator 5 is composed of the mentioned connecting part 4 and a part 7, which forms an application surface with a profile 8 and, in the exemplary embodiment shown, tapers conically in its end part 9 to a tip. In the embodiment shown, the applicator 5 consists entirely of a capillary-promoting fiber material or a porous sintered plastic, e.g. Polyethylene or polypropylene. Such a material is e.g. produced from polypropylene powder with an average particle size of 25 to 50 μ, preferably 30 to 40 μ, the polypropylene powder being pressed at a temperature of approximately 150 to 160 ° C. just below the melting range of the polypropylene and thereby being sintered. This creates capillary-acting pores or channels with a width of the order of 10 to 60 μ.

As a result of the formation of the applicator 5 from the capillary-promoting material described above, the connection shown between the applicator and the reservoir 2 causes cosmetic ink to be sucked in from the latter by the capillary action and conveyed to the application surface of the applicator part 7. If the applicator 5 is saturated with the cosmetic ink, there is no further replenishment and there is no dripping or smearing of the applicator. If, when using the device designed here, for example, as a mascara pencil, cosmetic ink is applied from the application surface to the eyelashes, then the capillary action on the surface, which takes place when cosmetic ink is removed from the application surface, causes a further re-feeding of ink accordingly the withdrawn quantity.

Instead of the design of the applicator 5 shown in FIG. 1, the shapes and profiles shown in FIGS. 2 to 5 can be used, in addition to further modifications not shown here. These are all suitable for use as mascara pens, and the embodiments according to FIGS. 1 and 5 can also be used as ink liners. In Fig. 2 the applicator is substantially cylindrical and carries a number of sawtooth-shaped ring ribs 51 in the axial section, which run closed around the circumference of the applicator. According to FIG. 3, the applicator, which is also essentially cylindrical, has a helical rib 52 with a sawtooth profile. According to FIG. 4, sawtooth-shaped ribs 53 are formed only on one long side of the applicator, while according to FIG. 5 the applicator essentially has a slightly barrel-shaped shape tapering to a tip and ring ribs 54 of the one shown in FIG. 2 in its rear section Has type, whose diameter, however, becomes smaller towards the tip in accordance with the taper of the applicator.
