Abstract

The invention achieves the object of obtaining convenient operation and stable locking free from play at each selected height adjustment of the arm-and backrests for a minimal constructional outlay. A device which combines wedge and catch fastening is proposed. A supporting element (1, 21) - a bar piece or an angle - for receiving the adjusting part (3, 23), in the shape or for attachment of the arm-or backrest, has a surface structure, e.g. a wedge-angle toothing (2, 22), and with a wedge (4, 24) which bears a surface structure (2', 22') for positive engagement therewith, the adjusting part (3, 23) is locked at the selected height position. By means of an unlocking device (8, 28), the wedge (4, 24), which is pressed against the supporting part (1, 21) by a spring (6, 26), can be released for the adjusting operation. <IMAGE>

Description

The invention relates to a device for the step-like adjustment of ergonomically, in height, adjustable arm and backrests for chairs, in particular office work chairs.

The vast majority of all people working in offices work primarily in a seated position with the known negative health consequences. A variety of constructive efforts have therefore been made to reduce the strain on the muscles, tissues and skeleton. This subheading includes the adaptability of various chair parameters to the body stature of the respective user. So up to 50 cm difference in body size must be compensated. In addition to adjusting the height of the seat, adjustment mechanisms have also been created to adjust the height of the armrests and backrests.

Several designs of such adjustment devices for armrests and backrests are known. When designing a backrest adjustment, a vertical wire bracket is provided which has grid-like indentations. A holding plate is attached to the backrest, which is attached to the user side of the wire bracket, while a counter plate can be screwed onto a common threaded pin by means of a handwheel. The embossed structure of the holding and counter plate engages in the indentations of the wire bracket and thus fixes the backrest at the selected height by screwing. This device is very cumbersome to use due to the screw connection. You can hardly adjust the height in the sitting position make. First the handwheel has to be loosened by several turns, for which the user will stand behind the chair. Then pre-lock the chair back height in a seat test and finally screw the handwheel back behind the chair.

A more recent version of a height adjustment for a chair back provides for a vertically attached support rail on the back, which has a large number of locking holes. This support rail is retractable in the chair frame, an unlocking by lever actuation with a locking pin engaging in the locking hole of the support rail corresponding to the respective height. The height is therefore variable by moving the support rail out more or less. The disadvantage of this design is that you have to reach far behind you to achieve unlocking. Even more unfavorable is a certain shakiness of the support rail in the holder, due to the necessary play between the support rail and the guide, or between the locking pin and the locking hole.

An equally inadequate construction with a fixed support rail and sliding backrest is known from US-A-4 662 682.

The situation is similarly unsatisfactory with the known adjusting devices for positioning the height of armrests. A wide variety of designs have been developed here. The height is adjusted, for example, by means of threaded rods that can be unscrewed, which cause a change in height as a result of different lifting off the base frame. Support rails with a series of locking holes or locking notches are also used, in which pins or pins engage for locking. The same as for the height settings for the backrests the previous shortcomings in the form of awkward handling or instability due to play in the guide and the locking also in the case of the adjusting devices for armrests.

Thus, the present invention has set itself the task of proposing a device for step-like height adjustment for arm and backrests, which ensures comfortable operation, that is, the control valves must allow uncomplicated handling and the obviously same height should be quickly adjustable for both armrests of a chair his. The ergonomically sensible height gradations are to be realized. All in all, the adjustment process may only take a few simple steps and seconds. In addition, the device must allow stable locking at any selected height setting. Finally, the design has to allow efficient series production.

This object is achieved by the device according to the invention as defined in independent claim 1. Preferred design variants result from the dependent patent claims.

First, an embodiment of the inventive design of the device, with respect to the step-like height adjustment of an armrest, will be described with reference to Figures 1 to 3. The figures only show the invention itself - on a backrest side - without the chair as a whole.

The support part 1 - preferably a piece of rod made of metal or resistant plastic - is fixed at its lower end, load-bearing for the armrest, attached to the chair frame. Facing the seated person, in the direction of escape of the armrest, the support part 1 has an approximately 10 mm wide and 2 mm high, practically horizontal wedge angle toothing 2. This wedge angle toothing 2 extends over a length which corresponds to the adjustment range, plus the upper and lower edge zones caused by the device. The armrest, the adjustment part 3, which has a vertical bore in its rear area for receiving the support part 1 inserted from below, is plugged onto the support part 1. The actual adjustment mechanism is located behind the hole entrance in an extended room. A wedge 4 is in the locked state - the unlocking 8 is not actuated - with its longitudinal side 5, which carries a wedge-angle toothing 2 ′ that is suitable for the wedge-angle toothing 2 of the support part 1, with positive and positive locking on the wedge-angle toothing 2. The wedge is pushed onto the support part 1 by the spring 6 acting indirectly on it and the guide bevel pointing him towards the support part 1. As the load on the support part 1 increases - for example by placing the user's arms on the armrest - the wedging increases. The spring 6 sits on the one hand rigidly on the adjusting part 3 and on the other hand acts against the unlocking 8, which in turn is rotatably mounted on an axis 9 located on the adjusting part 3. The unlocking 8 has a nose 10 which engages in a groove 11 of the wedge 4 and in this way transmits the pressure of the spring 6 for inserting the wedge 4 into the constriction between the support part 1 and the guide bevel 7.

Fig. 3). There follows the explanation of the adjustment process on the armrest (see FIG. 3). If a change in the height setting is required, the unlocking 8 must be pressed against the spring 6 by the user. As a result, the unlocking 8 move down about the axis 9 and the nose 10. Since the nose 10 is in engagement with the groove 11 of the wedge 4, the wedge 4 is pulled downwards out of the constriction between the support part 1 and the guide bevel 7. The use of a wedge angle toothing 2 and 2 'with a large tooth angle at a low height enables - as has been shown - the problem-free loosening of the wedge 4. If the wedge 4 is loosened, an air gap 12 is created between the support part 1 and the wedge 4, which Teeth of the spline teeth 2 and 2 'are out of engagement. This makes it possible to push the adjusting part 3 up or down, depending on the requirement. When the desired position is reached the user no longer actuates the unlocking 8, whereupon the wedging between the supporting part 1 and the adjusting part 3 becomes effective again in the new position by means of the wedge 4.

An exemplary embodiment for the inventive design of the device in the step-like height adjustment of a backrest will now be described with reference to FIGS. 4 and 5. The figures again only show the invention itself, the chair and the back of the chair as a whole are not shown.

The support member 21 - preferably a metal bracket or made of resistant plastic - is fixed with its smooth, shorter leg, load-bearing for the backrest, on the chair frame so that the longer leg runs virtually vertically in the back of the user. This vertical leg has on its outward-facing side an approximately 2 mm high wedge angle toothing 22 which extends over the entire width of the leg and runs practically horizontally. The wedge angle toothing 22 is incorporated over the entire length, which corresponds to the adjustment range, plus the upper and lower edge zones caused by the device. On the support part 21, a wedge 24, which on its longitudinal side 25 and the support part 21, bears a wedge angle toothing 22 ′ which is suitable for the wedge angle toothing 22 ', is non-positively and positively. The wedge 24 is pushed onto the support part 21 by the spring 26 acting directly on it and the guide bevel 27 of the adjustment part 23 pointing it towards the support part 21. The chair backrest is then attached to the adjustment part 23 in a conventional manner, or is attached to the chair backrest from the outset the adjustment part 23 is integrally formed. The spring 26 sits in one Slot 32 of the wedge 24, it is supported on a stop 33 on the adjusting part 23 and causes the wedge 24 to be pushed up. The wedge 24, the supporting part 21 and, in part, the unlocking 28 are also received by the adjusting part 23. These units are covered and held together by a closure plate 34 which is screwed to the adjusting part 23.

The following explains the adjustment process on the backrest. If a re-adjustment of the backrest height is desired, the unlocking 28 must be pressed by the user, indirectly against the spring 26. The release 28 is rotatably mounted on an axis 29 located on the adjusting part 23. A nose 30 of the unlocking 28 engages in a groove 31 of the wedge 24. By pressing the release 28 - it can be made more economical to handle by means of an additional lever 28 '- the release 28 moves about the axis 29 and thus the nose 30 downwards. By engaging the nose 30 in the groove 31, the wedge 24 is pulled down and thus loosened. An air gap is created between the support part 21 and the wedge 24. The adjustment part 23 with the backrest attached to it can now be pushed up or down as desired. When the desired position has been reached, the user releases the release 28, whereupon the wedge 24 becomes effective again for locking the adjusting part 23.

The dimensioning of the wedge angle toothing 2, 2 ', 22, 22' named for the above exemplary embodiments is of course also dependent on the design of the other components. However, it has proven useful to have a fairly large tooth angle, i.e. one provide coarse toothing in order to disengage the toothed parts with a short switching distance. In addition, a coarse toothing, with the result of noticeable height levels, enables easier locking of both armrests of a chair at the same level.

The invention is not limited to a wedge angle toothing with a symmetrical tooth shape and a horizontal tooth course on the mutually form-fitting support parts and wedges. For various functions or loads, it may be advantageous to design the suitable toothing on the support part and the wedge in terms of tooth shape and tooth profile, e.g. an asymmetrical tooth shape and a V-shaped tooth course. Finally, the invention can be implemented, in addition to toothing, using other form-fitting surface structures on the interlocking surfaces of the support parts and the wedges, e.g. protruding knobs on the one hand and suitable recesses on the clamping surface of the counterpart.

The combination of wedge and snap-in bracket achieves excellent play-free and torsionally stable snap adjustment for the special requirements of arm and backrests on office chairs. Because surfaces were blocked against one another in the inventive device, a substantial improvement in stability could be achieved.
