Abstract

The insertion of filler mass (8) is carried out so that the undamaged paint surface (9) directly next to the damage point (6) is free from it. After the filler mass has dried, the excess at the damage point is smoothed away. After cleaning the smoothed damage point, paint is applied to it in the appropriate colour extending on all sides to between 4 and 6 cm and in a very thin layer, i.e. 10 to 20 micrometres. This constitutes a first repair cover paint layer (10). The paint sprayer is guided in a star-shaped manner and each time centrifugally away from the damage point. After drying of the applied colour paint a clear lacquer sprayed on to the damage point, extending on all sides between 2 and 4 cm, constituting a first repair clear lacquer layer (11).

Description

The invention relates to a method for the economical repair of a mechanical damage on a new exterior paint finish of a motor vehicle.

DE 38 33 225 C2 describes a method for the locally selective repair of painting errors in new paintwork on vehicle bodies. The flaw, e.g. a particle inclusion, a small bubble or a thin spot due to an oil droplet on the surface, is burned out by a focused laser beam and the resulting small cavity is filled with a small area with a curable repair compound that matches the surrounding paint and - also small-area - a clear lacquer coating applied. The repair compound is applied in different ways, namely the following procedures are described:
  • ▷ Locally targeted melting of a small amount of repair material by means of a focused laser beam from an applied film made of repair material and at the same time application of the melted amount into the exposed cavity.
  • ▷ Melting the repaired material, which has been pulverized and pressed into a small pellet, the pellet being placed on the cavity, and depositing such a small drop in the cavity.
  • ▷ Place a small droplet of an inherently liquid repair compound into the cavity, whereby the droplet is guided into the cavity at the tip of a needle.

The repair compound is usually cured thermally, but the document also mentions curing by UV radiation. The repair compound and the clear lacquer can be hardened successively or - when applied wet in wet - at the same time. In any case, curing also takes place by means of locally targeted, small-area heat supply, for example by means of a focused, high-energy jet, by spraying hot gas, etc. Any excess of the repair liquid applied over the cavity or a protrusion of the subsequently applied clear lacquer is mechanically removed over a small area. Due to the repair, the locally disrupted paint layer is closed, thereby restoring the protective function to the defect. The touch-up point may also look better than the untreated painting defect and is less noticeable than the original painting error. A disadvantage of the known selective paint repair process, however, is that the paint defect cannot be completely eliminated optically, i.e. the repair site remains recognizable, at least when the paint requirements are high and the test is accordingly critical.

The damaged area in the multi-layer coating is first sanded down to the metal sheet, resulting in a sanding area of approximately 5 cm in diameter. The sanding point is cleaned and filled with a known repair primer to form a film. Then the primed area is at least about 10 cm in diameter. A filler is applied to the primer to form a film; the repair site then measures at least 15 cm in diameter. A layer of paint that corresponds to the color-determining lacquer is applied to the filler layer in a covering layer thickness, the lacquer application being applied on the edge towards the old lacquer. A clear varnish is applied over this, which results in a further enlargement of the repair area. The individual orders are each before Apply the next layer to a stable film, either dry or partially dry. At least at the end the lacquer layers are hardened together at temperatures above 100 ° C; it is also indicated that individual layers can be stoved in between. A disadvantage of this repair process is that the - recommended here - limitation of the application of the color-determining lacquer layer and the clear lacquer layer to the repair point leads to recognizable color or brilliance differences in the transition area to the untreated old lacquer coating, which are particularly noticeable with light metallic lacquers. For this reason, the repair painting in the case of application to exterior body surfaces in the described procedure cannot be expected of the customer.

Therefore, when repairing defects and damage to new paintwork in the series production of vehicles, it is necessary and customary to coat the entire affected body part evenly with the color-determining lacquer layer and with the clear lacquer until the next body joint, in order to include unsightly color edges around the repair point Exclude security. Damaged areas can be repaired in a way that is no longer recognizable, but this requires considerable effort, which is not easily recognizable:
  • ▷ In addition to the body part to be repaired and painted, the entire vehicle must be covered with adhesive tape and temperature-sensitive built-in or add-on parts must be removed beforehand. Then of course these parts must be reassembled. This labor-intensive work is associated with high wage costs.
  • ▷ Large amounts of cover film are used, which can only be used once, which - apart from the film consumption - also generates a large, cost-causing amount of waste.
  • ▷ For the described preparation of vehicles for repainting, there is a large number of vehicles to be repainted requires a lot of space, which results in high investment costs for corresponding large halls and land areas.
  • ▷ The dismantling and assembly work in turn cause errors in the function of the reassembled parts. In addition, this work is occasionally the cause of renewed or further damage to the paint.
  • ▷ Due to the size of the repainting spot alone, there is the possibility and probability of repainting the paint.
  • ▷ The large-area repainting creates a relatively large amount of material and also takes a relatively long time, which is also reflected in the correspondingly high material and labor costs.
  • ▷ The energy required for baking and cooling the large-area repainting is correspondingly large, so that stationary heat radiator tunnels with subsequent cooling tunnels are required. As a result, the related investment costs and ongoing energy costs are correspondingly high.
Despite these cost disadvantages of large-area repainting, to the knowledge of the applicant, small-area repair paints have so far not been able to prevail in practice, at least for sophisticated exterior paintwork, because the repair points in the known painting repair processes have always been more or less clearly recognizable.

Starting from the described prior art, it is an object of the invention to optimize the repair process in such a way that damaged areas and small paint defects on new exterior paintwork of motor vehicles can be repaired, on the one hand, at significantly lower costs than before and, on the other hand, without optically recognizable traces.

This object is achieved by the entirety of the features of claim 1. The decisive advantage of the invention lies in a considerable cost-saving effect the reason for this is that the repair site according to the invention can be kept small, ie for example below a diameter of 20 to 25 cm. This will be discussed in more detail below. The breakthrough to a repair and refinishing point that was both small and technically perfect was achieved due to the procedure according to the invention. The repair site that was created afterwards meets strict standards and also withstands a critical examination. This functional advantage, which can only be achieved thanks to the invention, is also due, on the one hand, to the small size of the repair site and, on the other hand, to the thin, possibly repeated application of paint. On the one hand, cloudiness and, on the other hand, disruptive edge or transition effects can be avoided in a manner that can be safely controlled. The repair of the damaged area is no longer discernible to the practiced eye, even though the repair site merges freely into the undisturbed surface of the body part or into the original paint job.

The cost advantages that can be achieved by the repair method according to the invention are justified as follows:
  • ▷ Tight overall covers of the vehicle and disassembly and subsequent assembly of temperature-sensitive built-in or add-on parts as well as a cover or disassembly / assembly of the - also temperature-sensitive - vehicle wheels are unnecessary. This work is very personnel-intensive and therefore associated with high labor costs, which are now no longer necessary.
  • ▷ Due to the previously required total adhesive cover, very large amounts of cover film were used that could only be used once. In addition to the high film consumption, this also generated a large amount of waste, which had to be disposed of at a charge. Now the body parts only have to be covered with a small area of adhesive at the repair site. Both the consumption of sealing tape and adhesive tape and the corresponding amount of garbage have dropped to a small fraction of the original amounts. Incidentally, can now also be much cheaper obtainable and inexpensive disposable cover paper can be used. As far as the vehicle has to be covered over a large area when repairing, reusable cover parts can be used.
  • ▷ The space required for the previously necessary covering and dismantling / assembling was very large with the large number of vehicles to be repainted, so that due to this there were also high investment costs for the corresponding hall space. These costs no longer arise.
  • ▷ When converting an existing conventional re-painting to the re-painting according to the invention, hall space of around 15 to 20% of the space required is free for the overall painting of the vehicles, which can be used for other purposes.
  • ▷ Due to the elimination of dismantling and assembly work, a large number of error possibilities regarding the function of the newly assembled parts no longer apply. In addition, the previously required dismantling and assembly of parts was always the cause of renewed or further damage to the paint. By eliminating this work, the reject rate of refinishing is reduced.
  • ▷ The miniaturization of the touch-up points has the advantage - solely due to the smaller size of the repainting point - that the possibility of renewed lacquer defects is significantly reduced compared to a large-area repainting, so that refinishings according to the invention are almost in order, which is only the case with large-area repaintings Is part of the case.
  • ▷ The material and time required for small-area repainting is significantly reduced compared to large-area repairs, which is reflected in correspondingly lower material costs and further reduced labor costs.
  • ▷ The energy required for baking and cooling the small-area refinishing is correspondingly lower, so that, on the one hand, smaller heat radiators, for example individual movable infrared radiators, are required compared to complete, stationary heat radiator tunnels with subsequent cooling tunnels are. As a result - apart from the smaller space requirement already mentioned - the related investment costs for small radiant heaters and of course the running energy costs are also significantly lower.

Not only can minor mechanical damage, as a rule scratches or the like, be repaired effectively and inexpensively with the method according to the invention, but the method is also suitable for repairing small painting defects which initially do not have a cavity, but on the contrary, a small one Include particles or a small bubble in the solidified paint. If a fine cavity is carefully attached to such a paint defect and the defect is removed from the paint surface, the cavity can then be repaired in the manner mentioned, like a mechanical damaged area. The fine cavity can be generated mechanically or thermally.

Further expedient embodiments of the invention can be found in the subclaims; otherwise, the invention is explained below using an exemplary embodiment shown in the drawing; show:
1 to 7
Cross-sections through a defect in a paint to be repaired, with the display being greatly exaggerated in the paint thickness direction in various phases of the repair process.

The multilayer repainting 7 shown in cross-section in the figures is applied to a body panel 1, an electrophoretically applied dip primer 2 first on a phosphating layer (not shown), then a filler layer 3, then the color-determining topcoat 4, for example a silver metallic lacquer, and finally a clear lacquer layer 5 is applied. The paint contains mechanical damage 6 in the form of a cross-sectionally V-shaped scratch that is to be repaired.

To economically repair this mechanical damage 6 in the repainting 7 of a motor vehicle, the procedure is as follows:

First the damaged area itself is cleaned by blowing it out with compressed air and its surroundings with silicone remover (Figure 1).

Thereupon, the damaged area according to FIG. 2 is laid out sparingly, but with a slight excess, with a filler compound 8 approximated in the color of the respective coating, so that the undamaged paint surface 9 immediately next to the damaged area 6 remains free of filler compound 8. The filler is expediently applied with a fine needle. By adjusting the color of the filler to the color of the color-determining topcoat, it can be achieved that it can be applied very sparingly for covering with a later topcoat layer. The economical covering of the damaged area with filler has a similar effect: this means that the top coat can later be applied over a small area. A two-component filler material is used to lay out the damaged area, which hardens more quickly under the influence of heat than, for example, a comparable filler material based on solvents. The designed damage point is under a small, i.e. heat radiators essentially limited to the damaged area, namely drying at about 70 to 80 ° C. for about 5 minutes. In order not to overheat the surface, but still be able to maintain the desired drying temperature, a temperature-controllable heat radiator is preferably used which detects the object temperature without contact and accordingly can regulate this temperature automatically.

After the filler mass has dried, the supernatant of the filler mass is leveled (FIG. 3). To do this, the excess filler is first coated with a fine 1200 grit sandpaper and a manually guided sanding pad with a size of about 2 to 5 cm in diameter, sanded carefully and over a small area and then polished the sanding point with lambskin and polishing milk. The polished surface is then cleaned with silicone remover to remove polishing and varnish residues.

After the leveled damaged area has been cleaned, a topcoat corresponding to the color of the topcoat is applied to it in a small area and thinly (first topcoat layer 10 in FIG. 4), the application conditions being discussed in more detail below. The viscosity of the varnish used does not need to be changed compared to the topcoat used for the series coating. As far as the other formulation parameters of the topcoats are concerned, the series topcoats can also be used to a large extent for refinishing. Only with light metallic paints should a special repair paint be used, which differs from the standard metallic paint in that the distribution spectrum of the metal pigments in the area of large metal pigments is trimmed, i.e. the larger metal pigments are filtered off or screened off.

The topcoat should be applied as small a surface as possible during the refinishing, for example projecting the damaged areas on all sides by about 4 to 6 cm, and thinly, ie about 10 to 20 µm thick. When painting, the spray element is guided in a star shape and centrifugally each time away from the damaged area. After some practice, a skillful painter will be able to apply metallic paints without shadows and transitions to the original paintwork at the locally restricted repair site. The applicant used spray guns from Sata with the size designation 90 or the designation Mini Jet with nozzles with a size of 1.1 to 1.3 mm (normally about 1.8 mm and larger nozzles are used) for the top coat application . In terms of both the gun size and the nozzle size, smaller devices or device parts are used in the refinishing to keep the paint as small as possible and apply thinly. With the same objective, a reduced air pressure at the nozzle of only about 0.7 bar compared to normal painting conditions (about 2 to 3 bar) is used. Finally, the painter should guide the spray gun or nozzle closer than normal, ie at a distance of about 10 to 20 cm from the paint surface.

Before further treatment of the repair site, the applied top coat should at least flash off, for which purpose it can be blown on with dry air at about room temperature for about 3 minutes. It is also permissible to dry the applied lacquer at this stage, but it is not necessary.

After the applied topcoat has been vented (or dried), a clearcoat is applied to the repair area over a small area (first clearcoat layer 11 in FIG. 5), the clearcoat projecting beyond the surface previously repainted with topcoat paint by about 2 to 4 cm. A diluted clear coat, preferably as a two-component coat, is used to apply the clear coat. The viscosity of the clearcoat for the application here is set to be thinner than normal, specifically to a run-off time of 20 to 30 seconds, preferably 20 to 22 seconds, which is usually measured here according to DIN 53 211, the following applies to the measurement conditions according to DIN 53 211: Use a measuring cup with a 4 mm outlet nozzle and maintain a paint temperature of 20 ° C during the measurement. During the refinishing work on vehicles of the applicant, a fine jet spraying device from Sata with the size designation 90 and a nozzle with an opening diameter of 1.1 to 1.3 mm was used for the clearcoat application. A pressure of only about 1.5 to 2 bar, which was only slightly reduced compared to normal application technology, was set on the spray gun, and a reduced distance of the spray nozzle from the body surface of about 10 to 20 cm was maintained. For a uniformly thin and small-area application, it is also advisable to guide the spray gun in a star-shaped manner in the case of clear lacquer application, the nozzle being moved away from the center each time. Then the Transition area from the clear lacquer application to the original repainting by dissolving the original lacquer by means of a spray-on spray remover from the company BASF Farben + Lacke AG, Münster (DE) with the designation SV 46-0300. Despite its hardening, the surface 9 of the paint 7 nonetheless reacts to the spray-on solvent because the reactivity of the new paint is only lost after several days. By dissolving the newly applied clearcoat and the clearcoat of the original coating, both merge into one another at the edges of the touch-up point without matt appearances with a constant gloss. After waiting for a short exposure and application time, the paint applied at the repair site can be locally dried locally.

For drying the lacquer applied to the damaged area - as was already the case when drying the filler compound 8 - a temperature-adjustable heat radiator positioned in a constant position relative to the body and at a certain distance from the application point is used, which is movable and held by a tripod is. The lacquer is dried for 15 to 30 minutes, preferably for about 20 minutes, at an object temperature of 70 to 95 ° C, preferably about 80 ° C. After the repair point has cooled to about room temperature, it can be sanded manually, for example, with a 2000 grit sandpaper and then polished with polishing milk and a rotating lambskin disc.

When repairing body parts that were painted in dark solid colors or dark metallic paints with a low proportion of metal pigment, a single covering of the repair point is sufficient. Body parts, however, which are painted with bright uni-paints or with bright effect paints with a high metallic pigment content, especially with a silver metallic paint, had to be painted a second time with top coat paint to completely cover the repair area. Accordingly, with body parts of these colors, the above was based on the The sequence of steps described in the last three pages (sequence of steps c) to f) in claim 1) is repeatedly used, so that, in accordance with FIGS. 6 and 7, a second top layer 12 and a second clear lacquer layer 13 are applied at the repair point. This results in a good covering effect. The diameter of the two second layers of lacquer need not be larger than the corresponding first lacquer layers below.

The repair process described here can also be used to repair fine painting errors that occur during painting itself, be it repainting or repainting the body. Such painting errors usually arise from the fact that a small dust particle, a lint or the like before or during painting. falls on the object surface and is covered by the applied lacquer, which results in a small elevation in the lacquer.

To repair such a flaw, a cavity limited to the flaw is first applied locally without affecting the lacquer surface immediately adjacent to the flaw, the depth of the cavity still remaining within the multi-layer lacquering and not penetrating down to the metal sheet. Then this cavity is repaired like a mechanical damage in the manner mentioned. The fine cavity can be generated mechanically or thermally. One possibility for the fine mechanical removal of the lacquer defect is to mill the elevation with a manually guided, fine, high-speed pin mill in the manner of a dental-medical drill and to mill out a V-shaped cavity. Instead, it is also conceivable to gouge the cavity by means of a percussion needle, preferably driven in the ultrasound range. When thermally creating a fine cavity, for example, an energy-rich beam is focused on the defect and the cavity is thereby "burned out". A manually guided laser head of a pulse laser, in particular an Eximer laser can be placed on the workpiece surface at the defect.
