- the object of the system of the invention is to offer to an operator engaged in operations of demining a space-saving system providing an assistance function for the identification and handling of mines during mine clearance, all in him leaving free use of his hands and his vision natural.
- the system of the invention forms a tool for shaping to facilitate and secure work a minesweeper.
- the volume regarding software size and the mines database, after compression data, is approximately 500 MB, which fits in a CD-ROM. This feature is very interesting, because it ensures the autonomy of a user, including in operation, without having to use a satellite link to a central database.
- the mine clearance assistance system of the invention is intended to facilitate and secure the work of an operator. It consists of material laptop with mining database that the operator can consult at any time moment. This system can be used on the one hand to training of deminers to facilitate their instruction and training, and on the other hand, operation, for mission preparation and assistance recognition of objects to be neutralized and associated traps, and to facilitate the mission proper.
- the training is notably presented in direct vision on operating sequences, summary or recorded, which guide: the student or the operator (the usual method presents gestures in reverse vision facing the teacher or student).
- the voice control and assisted recognition of objects being processed reassures the operator by giving him freedom of movement (hands free).
- FIG. 2 illustrates the central unit, as well as the various peripherals which can be connected.
- the camera can be used while deferred. We can thus record a gesture with the camera. We can then scroll through this image and compare to the base image of data obtained in the helmet.
- the various elements of the whole hardware can be arranged in two suitcases.
- a first suitcase contains all of the device hardware and connections, one second is reserved for viewing and immersion headphones.
- An additional connection allows, if necessary, connect the assembly to a projector video, or to a television, or even several, for one wider audience.
- An internal battery allows about two hours of autonomous operation.
- the operator 15 first detects the presence of a mine 17, the updates, and is ready to begin deactivation.
- the operator can call to visualization, for each step of the demining, on the diagram of the mine, the parts concerned.
- the operating process of demining can be provided, either as text or as graphics, either as an audio instruction.
- the operator can call or eliminate all or part of the visualizations.
- schema databases as well as instructions, can be changed between each mission, to take account of new information.
- the software organization chosen for the system of the invention mainly consists of a database allowing to manage a large number of mines (about 1,000, 700 in the current version) described by around fifty characteristics and represented by several images, real or synthesis, fixed or animated. Processing software allows you to create effects intended for approximate the actual image acquired by the camera, or by direct vision, with the images of the base. These images can be saved for future use.
- Database replication is bidirectional thus enriching the base portable from the main base and conversely, to integrate the experience acquired on the land which can be transferred to the main base from a recording of the portable terminal.
- the database is organized from 32-bit software to allow creation not ambiguous text and image files. Furthermore the update and interrogations of this database were made as intuitive as possible, accessible without special computer skills.
- the integrated information is extracted from the database UN data "Mines Fact”.
- the executables provided allow the replication of this database on desktop, or on portable terminals, meeting the criteria of selection retained for this model.
- Images can come from documents "Scanned” or photographed either from a digital camera either from the camera miniature.
- Images can be stored after compression.
- the choice of compression ratio and the quality level represent a compromise between the size and quality of the virtual images memory.
- Video footage can be acquired by a camcorder or using the miniature camera. As with the pictures, you should choose when recording the best compromise between size stored files and image quality recorded.
- the database can be used on field. For this use it seems interesting to privilege the possibilities of mine research and identification.
- the operator can scroll through the base by all with buttons, VCR style, or choose to display a list of all mine names by clicking a button. By clicking on a mine selected, it brings up the form principal of this mine.
- the operator does not know the name of the mine: by observing it, it can define some obvious criteria, for example the form, the country of use or manufacture.
- the system of the invention favors this type of query. He can search for a word in the entire base. For example “yellow” and all mines containing this criterion will be displayed successively (as with a simple word processor). It can also limit display at mines meeting several criteria.
- the thesaurus For most fields that can do the subject of a search by criteria, we define a list of terms (the thesaurus). This list is not limitative, it is always possible to add additional information (up to 255 characters, numbers or letters). However it is essential that one of the words in the thesaurus be employee. This basic functionality also allows avoid spelling errors that could make a search inoperative, for example "Cylundre" is not found when searching "Cylinder”.
- the database replication function data allows updating all replicas of the base without limitation as to their number, by example a fixed workstation accommodates all important changes to the database. Changes carried out are passed on, on request, by any computer, network or modem connection to portable equipment, which allows updating worldwide (using a link on Internet, telephone, satellite, and ..).
- a remote user in the field can also enter new data to enrich the base if he has administrative rights. During its connection, it is possible to update the main base from the data obtained on the ground.
- the database has eight fields for hosting multimedia documents. These can be of different natures. he can both textual data: reports, or course material, with or without images, without size limitation other than that of memory available. They may contain graphics, diagrams, photographs, animations in images synthesis, sound or silent video films.
- Each mine is described by approximately fifty parameters some of which allow access quick by name, origin, dimensions, materials used, shape, color, weight, the explosive used, the method of installation, the range, the detectability, its image, an animated sequence of standard neutralization, its history (date and places among others).
- This base is replicable. She may be modified taking into account certain requests but this results in a resumption of treatment even if the basic principles do not change.
- image controls (photograph or video sequence) enriches the consultation, facilitates the instruction of the range neutralization operation, accelerates the acquisition of automated gestures. It therefore contributes to secure the deminer in operation.
- This screen has different headings, called fields.
- the management of the database is made from MICROSOFT ACCESS software (32 bit software) from which it takes over features.
- Window management is that of WINDOWS: closing by clicking on the top right of the window, enlargement by clicking on the square of it, reduction by clicking on the icon.
- the "Enter” key validates a operation
- the "Esc” key cancels it.
- the "Tab” key allows you to navigate a section, or field, to the next, the "F2" function key select a whole field, the "F3” key searches the next word in an operation of search / replace, the "F4" key takes place the elevator of the current field, if it exists, the key "F5" allows you to position the cursor directly in the window showing the mine number.
- Another method can be used to select a field, just scroll down list of fields at the top right of the screen and click on the name of the field research. For this it is necessary to know the nomenclature of fields.
- a third method of selecting a any field of the current mine is to click on the "data sheet mode” icon, which appear the list of mines with all fields grouped on a single line (one line per mine). To find the desired field, simply move in his column using the key “Tab”. To return to the presentation in mode "Form”, click on the "mode” icon form ".
- buttons navigation at the bottom of the screen, which allow faster moving through the database.
- the computer completes the word outline written with the first value contained in the thesaurus included in the database. This thesaurus can be selected by clicking on the drop-down arrow for the field.
- the selection may to be important. In this case, it is better restrict the selection, the latter adding values in new form fields.
- the selection may be empty. In this case, it widen the selection by deleting a value or one of the selected fields of the form.
- This option corresponds to a request composed of the mine selection style "Antipersonnel”, or "anti-tank”, manufactured in France or Belgium ”.
- buttons navigation it is possible to move in the selection using the buttons navigation.
- the first field at the top left of the screen is not listed; it corresponds to mine identification number in the database UN.
- the button "Comparison image” allows you to call the images, still or animated, and the "Image” button camera ”allows you to select the video image of the camera connected to the equipment (animated sequence or fixed in case of freeze frame).
- the image of comparison when called, is a floating window that remains on the screen as long as do not press its elimination icon represented by a cross. This allows the compare to images from other mines or to those from the camera (side-by-side comparison).
- An enlarged image (“Zoom") can be obtained by clicking on the binoculars associated with this image or by clicking on the "Magnifying Glass” icon. To exit the “Zoom”, click on the image itself or on the "Magnifying Glass” icon.
- Each line has a field label tracking the value of it for the mine considered.
- Some fields are check boxes: security device, arming delay, self-destruct ... Numeric fields are indicated with their unit.
- the image fields are represented in the form of vignettes; they are followed by the "comparison image” buttons and "Live camera” for viewing enlarged images (still or moving).
- a new mine is created after selecting the last existing mine from the database, by clicking on the navigation button " Next ".
- the first seven thumbnails are accompanied by a pair of binoculars. Clicking on this one, we get an enlargement of the image corresponding. To return to the screen containing the eight thumbnails, just click on the image enlarged.
- the operator equipped with the helmet visualization, sees animation on its screen defined above as a direct view the execution of the standard sequence. Compared to the reverse vision of classic demonstrations, this presentation is both more realistic and more convenient for the operator. He can compare the typical sequence with real vision, in progress of execution, which he can see through the part headphone bass.
- the reference sequence should not be too fast because it's more about acquiring automatisms that of a contest.
- the operator can train for reproduce the typical gesture to be performed in all security.
- the operator starts the start of the view, by clicking on the "Camera” button. His gestures are then recorded by the camera. To the end of the operation, he must click on the button "Stop”.
- a database replication can be performed by a person authorized to do so by the administrator of the base.
- the characteristics of a mine can be inserted in a text or table created at using external software to process the mining database. These connections cannot be performed only if the software in question accept the OLE (Object Linking and Embedding ") from Microsoft (for example, WORD and EXCEL).
- OLE Object Linking and Embedding
- the home screen shown in Figure 4 is the backbone of database processing mines. After any operation performed, it is advised to return to this screen, by clicking, general, on a "STOP" button.
- This screen contains text fields, buttons, icons, image fields, a bar indicators.
- the computer By entering a value for this field, the computer displays the first thesaurus values including the first letters are identical to those which have just been typed. This makes it possible to homogenize the characteristics of mines in the database.
- This field consists of an image at the bottom from the home screen. By clicking on the binoculars to the left of this image, we make a "Zoom”. he then just click on the enlarged image to return to the home screen.
- Image 1 This image, the most characteristic of the mine concerned, is the first of eight images; it is called “Image 1" in the screen of mines.
- the comparison image remains active as long that we did not select its closure in clicking on the cross at the top right of this window.
- the "Camera image” field allows you to select the moving image captured by the camera. It is therefore necessary to correctly orient the front camera to start this operation.
- the operator can stop recording the camera at any time clicking on the "Stop” button. He can then scroll through the camera recording using the navigation cursor with the ability to do freeze frame and "drag and drop” the stopped image to one of the seven thumbnails "Image 1" to "Image 7".
- the icon used to present the database in mine name list mode is located in the middle of the navigation buttons at the top of the screen. In this mode, the mines are listed sequentially, one mine by line, each one is identified by its UN number and by name.
- the list of mines represents, possibly the result of a sort, ascending or descending, carried out on one of the fields.
- the two icons "To WORD” and “To EXCEL” are located to the right of the icon “Datasheet mode”. They allow to export mining characteristics from the database to a text in WORD or a table under EXCEL.
- the link thus created allows update a text transparently or an array, since the base is itself changed.
- This function allows you to add exterior images, for example that recorded by the camera possibly after retouching, or computer generated images.
- search word icon next » displays a screen of research.
- the search can be limited to one single field or extended to the entire base.
- the other method is to launch a search on a given word identifying the mine sought.
- buttons To the right of these buttons is a drop-down window, in which the name of the field currently displayed selected.
- the new mine icon is grayed out, and therefore not usable, if the operator has not had the rights authorizing him to do so.
- the icon in the middle of the screen home, to the left of the print icon, also provides access to the list of mines, but in form mode with the list of all fields (about 50), accessible to using an elevator to the right of the screen.
- Print icon in the middle of the home screen allows you to obtain, after a print preview, edit all characteristics of a mine on a single page.
- This screen is called by clicking on the icon in the middle of the navigation buttons at the top from the home screen.
- the home screen icon bar is found on this secondary screen, as for other secondary screens below, except for the "Images of mines" screen.
- the list of selected mines appears there (one line per mine). On each line is displayed the title “Type mine” followed by the name of the mine.
