Abstract

A liquid crystal display having an improved light use efficiency, and a light source constituting the liquid crystal display. This display comprises (I) a light source for emanating a linearly polarized light having one vibrational direction including (i) a light guide made of a transparent medium and having an end face on which a light from a light source falls, two faces opposed to each other and one acting as an output face, and a haze-anisotropic layer, (ii) a light source disposed on the end face of the optical guide, and (iii) a reflector disposed near the face opposed to the output face of the optical guide; and (II) a polarizer disposed on the output face side of the optical guide such that the axis of polarization is parallel with the direction in which the haze value in the haze-anisotropic layer takes the maximum.
