Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for automatic ordering of Consumables for a device according to the preamble of the claims 1 and an arrangement for performing the method according to The preamble of claim 24.
- the solution below is for Renewal of consumables from franking machines applicable. It is irrelevant whether it is ink cartridges for ink jet printing units, thermal transfer ribbon cartridges, self-adhesive Franking strips or other consumables.
- Piracy products are used due to the lower price and may be easier to obtain than the original materials from a dealer.
- Franking machine dealers are often held responsible for deliveries to the customer and the customer thinks that the manufacturer is at fault if the deliveries do not arrive on time or are too expensive.
- the customer often does not plan his delivery requirements properly and then there is a risk of his mail processing coming to a standstill due to a lack of ink.
- the result is an urgent request for help from manufacturers for consumables, some of which have to be delivered by courier. This could be remedied by selling the consumables directly to the customer, which requires a timely request.
- the object of the invention is to provide a method for automatic Ordering supplies in equipment to develop which the use of inadmissible consumables largely is minimized and inexpensive and inexpensive for the customer. For different ones Consumables are designed to provide timely signaling approaching the replacement. An order to carry it out The procedure should have means that an order of Automatically trigger consumables at the responsible manufacturer.
- the task is with the features of the method according to the claim 1 and solved with the features of the arrangement according to claim 24.
- the approaching end of a consumption is recognized before a change of a consumable.
- the consumption size can be a temporal, physical, monetary or booking size or a quantity.
- An evaluation of a predetermined counter reading for the imprints before or after sensors detect a low ink level / residual value serves for the indirect detection of an approach of the end of consumption, for example before changing a (ink tank / ribbon) cassette of a franking machine.
- the ordering of the consumables takes place after the ordering party is identified on the basis of the identification code.
- a search is carried out in a database in which a corresponding consumable is assigned to each customer.
- This simple ordering routine only allows one order of a predetermined consumable.
- a scanner for scanning the consumable in the device is advantageously dispensed with, since the type of consumable does not change.
- Another ordering routine which also allows the ordering of various consumables in large numbers, requires not only an identification code to be communicated, but also an order number for the various consumables.
- a search in a database for an assigned consumable can be omitted.
- the order number can consist of several parts and includes an order code and / or an identification number for the consumables. It is assumed that the manufacturer aggregates the consumables with a generated order code and / or an identification number by adding both or the latter to a consumable intended for sale or by permanently assigning them by fastening or comparable measures. This also includes marking the consumable with this order code and / or with the identification number, which can be done in very different ways depending on the physical condition of the consumable.
- the device can have a chip card read / write unit for semi-automatic input or a scanner for automatic input of the order code and / or the identification number.
- an encrypted order message is generated and transmitted automatically in the device.
- the serial number of the device serves as an identification code.
- the order message includes the serial number of the device, the order code aggregated with the consumables and an identification number. The latter includes a number identifying the type of consumable and a number identifying the ordered quantity of consumable, possibly a check digit. After identifying the customer using the identification code (serial number of the device), the associated consumables are determined using the order message and the order is triggered by a shipping department.
- an authenticity of the order can be checked in the data center using the Compare operation if there is a match between the order code and a reference order code which is assigned to the serial number of the device in the database and thus indirectly to the orderer.
- Another ordering routine which permits the ordering of the same consumable in large numbers, requires not only an identification code but also an order number. The latter contains a number for the quantity corresponding to the number of consumables ordered.
- the serial number of the device can be used again as identification code.
- a search in a database for a consumable assigned to the serial number of the device can provide the type of consumable.
- the communication link is also used for notification of the device after checking the authenticity of the order. It is possible to change the operation of the device, if the successful Verification that the order has not been authenticated.
- FIG. 6 block diagram of the franking machine of the type JetMail®.
- the perspective view of a franking machine 1 of the T1000 type is shown from the front left according to FIG.
- the franking machine 1 has an internal modem and can be connected to a data center 100, for example, which has a database 130, for reloading credit via a first data connection 14.
- a chip card 10 is used, for example, to set the franking machine to a cost center under which billing is to be carried out.
- the franking machine 1 has a cassette compartment 7, which must be opened for inserting a thermal transfer ribbon cassette 9.
- the microprocessor When opening and / or removing the cassette, which detects a sensor (not shown), the microprocessor generates a display text and a warning appears on the display of a user interface 4 before a cassette 9 supplied by the manufacturer is removed and the franking machine continues to be operated 1 with a different cassette, because the cassette 9 removed cannot be used any longer.
- a marking is stamped on the beginning of the ribbon as a bar code. After the new ribbon cassette has been inserted into the franking machine, this marking is automatically detected by means of an optical scanner (not shown) in order to transmit the data content of the marking to the control unit of the franking machine, as is already known from EP 730 974 A2.
- an order is placed after a comparison of a consumption variable with a threshold value.
- the microprocessor works through an indirect or direct measuring method, which is adapted to the type of consumable and supplies the consumption size.
- the threshold value can be pre-programmed by the manufacturer, entered via the keyboard or loaded from a remote data center using a chip card or modem.
- a message is first generated to the customer and a user input which is to be evaluated to confirm that an order is to be triggered.
- the order is triggered after a message is generated and sent to the data center.
- the message can be encrypted to prevent an unauthorized order.
- a customer can also be given the opportunity to change the number of consumables to be ordered using the user interface. It is also provided that the number of consumables to be ordered can be changed to zero or at least one key is pressed in order to suppress the automatic order.
- Part of the notification is an order number and the serial number of the device, ie the security module (PSD) of the meter or franking machine.
- PSD security module
- the PSD Postal Security Device
- the PSD is part of modern franking machines and is used for billing and booking the franked mail and security-related routines such as credit reloading, and is therefore referred to below as the security module.
- Each of the requesting devices uses an automatic routine, which preferably uses the serial number of the device as an identification code. The latter allows the location of a franking machine to be determined and thus provides the destination address for sending the order.
- a service for consumables was installed in the data center, which checks the authenticity of the order based on an identification of the customer or the requesting user and an evaluation of the order number in the data center.
- the serial number of the device is assigned to a customer in a database of the data center.
- the order numbers for various consumables are listed in a list that is stored in a non-volatile memory in the device's memory.
- the aforementioned list can also be loaded from a remote data center using a chip card or a modem. It is a significant logistical advantage to be able to order different consumables, regardless of their type, using the same process, without the need for service personnel.
- the order number can consist of several parts.
- a first part consists of an order code that is only assigned to a certain group of consumables that can be reordered for the device and also enables proof that the order was automatically triggered by the device itself without any action on the part of a person.
- An identification number forms a second part and identifies the type of consumable.
- An optional third part contains the quantity and an optional fourth part contains a check digit to check the order for errors.
- the order number together with other data, forms the aforementioned message.
- An order code belonging to a certain group of consumables and an identification number for the type of consumable are generated by the manufacturer of the consumables.
- an order code for an ink tank cartridge is incorrect if the serial number belongs to a device with thermal transfer printing, because the ink tank cartridge naturally does not belong to a group of consumables for thermal transfer printers.
- the assignment of the order code to a certain group of consumables is stored in a database in the form of a data record with a reference order code together with the serial number of the device.
- This order code has a predetermined relationship to the reference order code.
- An identification number forms a second part of the order number and identifies the type of consumable.
- the authenticity can be checked using the order code. This does not rule out that in one variant the authenticity is determined on the basis of other data.
- At least part of the order message can also be transmitted in encrypted form and used for the authenticity check. The advantage of checking in the data center is that of course no manipulation can be carried out there.
- FIG. 2 A block diagram is explained with reference to FIG. 2, which applies to the franking machine 1 or any other device shown in FIG.
- a device has a microcomputer ⁇ P 19 for controlling the user interface 4 having a keyboard and a display with a controller, a modem 13 and a printer 17 and / or other actuators (not shown) which are connected to the microcomputer ⁇ P via an input / output interface 18 19 are connected.
- a scanner 15 is connected to the input / output interface 18 or a comparable means for entering at least parts of an order number on the consumable.

- the consumable is an ink ribbon for a franking machine according to FIG. 1.
- a postage computer scale 2 can be connected to the input / output interface 18 of the franking machine 1 via a cable 24 for data connection.
- Another data connection 14 is used to connect the modem 13 to the data center 100. If necessary, the scanner 15 can be omitted if the order number is entered via the user interface 4 and transmitted to the data center 100 via the modem 13 and the data connection 14.
- the postage calculator scale 2 has a weighing plate 21, a display 23 and a keyboard 25 for entering shipping information about a letter 33 to be conveyed. If the further data connection 24 exists between the devices of a system, one device, for example the postage calculator, Balance 2 of a franking system not only sends the weight, the postage value and other data to the franking machine 1 but also a message to the remote data center 100 via the modem of the franking machine 1, for example which rate PROM is used for the postage value calculation.
- the latter is located within a memory card 22, which can be inserted into the postage computer scale 2.
- the data center 100 can use data stored in a database 110 to distinguish whether an authorized or an unauthorized postage fee table is used.
- the solution according to the invention can also be applied to franking machines of a different type.
- the consumable is an ink jet print head with an integrated ink tank or a cartridge.
- Such a disposable print head is, for example, the Siemens type DHP50.
- FIG. 3 shows a circuit diagram of a detector which reliably detects the removal or replacement of the consumable even when the device is switched off and is not supplied with system voltage U s .
- the detector has a standard lithium battery BAT, which supplies a memory with a memory maintenance voltage of approx. 3V.
- a first switch S1 is actuated when the consumable is removed or changed. For example, a mechanical contact is opened, which interrupts the voltage supply to the memory by the lithium battery BAT.
- This voltage supply is detected and causes the closing of a second switch S2, which is preferably implemented as a CMOS circuit.
- the RESET input of the memory is thereby connected to ground (L level), which leads to the secure deletion of the memory content of the memory.
- the memory can be designed as an SRAM, which can be equipped with a code by the microcomputer 19 via the interface 18 by means of a shift register (not shown) and can be queried for the presence of the code.
- the consumable is an ink tank filled with ink.
- This solution also requires the presence of a modem and a sensor that detects the approach of a change or the use of a new consumable.
- the franking machine has a sensor and a control unit with processor, which is programmed to generate a message after the aforementioned recognition and to display it and, if necessary, to evaluate a user input in connection with the order, which is an encrypted order message is transmitted to the data center by modem.
- the consumable is in a non-solid state of matter.
- the consumable is a specific liquid for a letter humidifier and sealer.
- the latter can be part of an automatic letter feeder.
- a chip is used in which the code word is stored. By establishing a connection, for example via electrical contacts or wirelessly, the code word can be read out by scanner when the new consumables are installed.
- the code word can be read out by scanner when the new consumables are installed.
- FIG. 4 In the perspective view of a franking machine of the JetMail® type, shown from the right in FIG. 4, there is in principle an internal data connection to the integrated scale 20 whose rate PROM (not shown) can be checked in the same way as, for example, any other component that is modular removable form and has a memory.
- An automatic feeder 3 with an integrated separating device is arranged upstream of the franking machine 1.
- a pressure bracket 35 can be folded up and then presses on a stack of mail, from which the letters are separated by means of take-off rollers 32. Further parts of the separating device are located under a hood 34. A letter lies against a guide plate 31 and is moved downstream to the guide plate 11 of the franking machine 1, where the printing process called "franking" takes place. A franked letter moved on lies against a guide plate 81 of a locking module 8. A pair of closing rollers 82 ensures that envelope envelopes that are not yet completely closed are closed and are ejected via an insert 5 in the storage box 6.
- the structure of the franking machine of the JetMail® type is described in more detail, for example, in the unpublished German patent application DE 199 00 686.5-27 has been described under the title: Arrangement for closing envelopes.
- a chip card disk / reader unit 70 and an on / off switch 71 are arranged in the guide plate 11 of the franking machine 1. After switching on, a chip card 10 can be used in connection with the user interface 43, 45 to simplify the setting of the franking machine.
- the user interface 43, 45 is located on the meter 12 of the franking machine 1.

- a microprocessor (not shown) of the franking machine 1 monitors the fill level of an ink tank 95 shown in FIG an ink end sensor 92.
- the latter can according to the German Patent 196 13 944 C1 are in contact with two electrodes.
- sensors already deliver an end signal in JetMail, if a maximum of 200 franking postings are still possible, for one reason Avoid lack of ink incompletely printed franking image.
- the microprocessor may generate a display text Indicated on display 43: THE INK SUPPLY IS ALMOST USED UP. PLEASE REPLACE THIS SOON INK TANK! RESERVE IN PRINT: 200.
- the franking machine 1 can now continue to be operated with the reserve ink quantity.
- the microprocessor realizes a down counter in its memory space, which is preset to 200 by the ink end signal and is decremented by one with each additional franking.
- the number 200 results empirically from empirical values for a remainder of possible prints and a safety factor.
- the number identifying the rest can be displayed before the next franking.
- the microprocessor After each further franking, the microprocessor generates a status line which shows the number of remaining prints and finally issues the message: THE INK SUPPLY IS USED. PLEASE CHANGE THE INK TANK.
- the used ink tank 95 can be removed and put into a plastic bag which catches any ink residue that may leak.
- a new ink tank can be removed from the packaging and checked to ensure that the color of the ink is correct.
- a hole code on the back of the ink tank can be used for this.
- the new code word can be read.
- the ink tank is inserted into - not shown - side guide rails of the ink tank compartment and pushed in until it clicks into place.
- the microprocessor generates the message: THE INK TANK MISSING!
- a contact is automatically closed. The franking machine recognizes through this contact that a new consumable has been installed.
- the original ink type post red, fluorescent red, etc.
- the original ink type can be detected using suitably designed contacts.
- a user-adjustable threshold value is reached, which triggers an automatic consumable order.
- a connection is established with the manufacturer's data center.
- Modern franking machines are all already equipped with a modem so that they can communicate with the manufacturer's data center. This is usually used to get a credit amount loaded from the data center if the corresponding memory has been franked mentally.
- the transmission of the order message requires an additional communication routine.
- known data protection measures are used to prevent the code words from being eavesdropped on the transmission link.
- the data center receives the order message for a consumable 95 together with a serial number of the franking machine 1 or its security module.
- the appropriate code is searched for in the group of stored reference order codes. If the latter is found, the order of the consumables is considered authentic.
- FIG. 6 shows a block diagram of a franking machine of the JetMail® type with a control unit 40 to 58 having a processor 46 and with a base including an integrated scale 20, a rate PROM 22, a modem 53 and such a detector 96, which detects the Change or the use of a new ink tank cartridge 95 recognizes.
- the rate PROM 22 can alternatively also be implemented in the dashed memory module 51, 52 within the meter.
- the direct measuring method by means of the detector 96 can be replaced by an indirect measuring method which uses the existing sensors 92 and 97. It is provided that the microprocessor 46 is programmed so that the number of remaining prints is displayed each time the device is switched on and / or the consumables are changed.
- a predetermined residual amount of ink is detected by means of the electrodes 93, 94 and the sensor 92 and communicated to the microprocessor 46 via the assemblies SAS 59, sensor / actuator control interface ASIC 58, which then generates a display.
- a predetermined remnant of ink remains, which is sufficient for approximately 200 impressions, if the conductivity between the contacts 93, 94 falls below a predetermined threshold value.
- Switching the franking machine 1 on / off via the switch 71 can be detected via the sensor 97, which is also connected to the SAS 59. Switching off at the time when the postage meter machine only has the remaining ink can indicate an impending change.
- the microprocessor 46 is programmed to evaluate a predetermined count for the remaining impressions when sensors 97 and 92 detect a restart and an ink level.
- the microprocessor 46, sensor 92 and electrodes 93, 94 on the ink tank cartridge 95 are provided to detect the approach of a change of the ink tank cartridge 95.
- its order number can be entered, which is characteristic of a specific ink.
- a security module 60 developed by the applicant serves as the first Accounting module and has a hardware accounting unit 63 and one battery-supported non-volatile memory 61, in which by modem 53 a credit can be loaded.
- An OTP (One Time Programmable) processor 66 carries out security routines for both credit reloading, as well as to secure the register data with a MAC (Message Authentication Code).
- the advantage of the security module is that the reliability check and approval of the Franking and franking machine according to the invention by the Post carrier takes place, then only for the processor system concerned 60 and the connected printer module 55-57 is required.
- the chip card 10 forms a second processing module in connection with the chip card read / write unit 70.
- the microprocessor 46 and the first memory components 41, 42 then form a third processing module and the microprocessor 46 and the second memory devices 51, 52 (dashed lines) then form a fourth processing module etc.
- the microprocessor 46 with the associated memories 41, 42 is programmed to count the imprints in connection with the detection of an approaching change of the ink tank cartridge, and is used as a postage calculator and for pressure control.
- the accounting module 60 is used for accounting and calculation of encryption codes at least for communication with the data center for the purpose of reloading credit. Because of this division of tasks, the accounting module 60 has been further developed into a security module.

Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a method for automatic ordering of
Consumables for a device according to the preamble of the
Tintenmangel. Im Ergebnis resultieren dringende Hilfanforderungen an
Hersteller nach Verbrauchsmaterialien, welche teilweise per Kurier
zugestellt werden müssen. Abhilfe könnte ein direkter Vertrieb der
Verbrauchsmaterialien an den Kunden schaffen, was eine rechtzeitige
Anforderung voraussetzt.Franking machines have been known since the 1920s and are still being perfected today. The printing principle has changed from original purely mechanical solutions with a printing drum to electronic solutions with a thermal transfer or inkjet print head. From the 1970s, microprocessors and electronic credit memories were used in the increasingly electronic controls. In addition, special security measures have been developed to prevent or detect unauthorized manipulation to the detriment of the manufacturer or user or the mail carrier. The franking machine also consumes printing ink and wears out the parts belonging to the printing technology, it being in the interest of the user and the mail carrier if high-quality material of the manufacturer is used. However, if so-called piracy products are used, this affects the life and print quality of the machine. Piracy products are used due to the lower price and may be easier to obtain than the original materials from a dealer.
Franking machine dealers are often held responsible for deliveries to the customer and the customer thinks that the manufacturer is at fault if the deliveries do not arrive on time or are too expensive. The customer often does not plan his delivery requirements properly and then there is a risk of his mail processing coming to a standstill due to a lack of ink. The result is an urgent request for help from manufacturers for consumables, some of which have to be delivered by courier. This could be remedied by selling the consumables directly to the customer, which requires a timely request.
An upcoming change of consumables is already known shown on the display. Already in the German publication DE 195 49 376 A1 was proposed by the applicant Sensors for determining the amount of ribbon left on ribbon cartridges to use for a thermal transfer printer or the number of Counting by means of the control of the thermal transfer printer. Counting the number of prints on the piezo ink jet print heads is not possible Provide information about the amount of ink remaining in the ink tank, because one low to medium number of frankings per day of consumption by priming outweighs what the number of possible prints ever Ink tank filling reduced. With piezo ink jet print heads, unfortunately Primes lost much of their ink and can not get their heads back be fed. Therefore, for safe ink supply, it is important to recognize the end of the ink and to signal it in good time. The levy however, a requirement for consumables continues to exist left to the customer.
The object of the invention is to provide a method for automatic Ordering supplies in equipment to develop which the use of inadmissible consumables largely is minimized and inexpensive and inexpensive for the customer. For different ones Consumables are designed to provide timely signaling approaching the replacement. An order to carry it out The procedure should have means that an order of Automatically trigger consumables at the responsible manufacturer.
The task is with the features of the method according to the
By monitoring and evaluating a predetermined consumption quantity, the approaching end of a consumption is recognized before a change of a consumable. Depending on the consumable, the consumption size can be a temporal, physical, monetary or booking size or a quantity. During the evaluation, a combination of different consumption quantities can be taken into account for a more precise evaluation in order to trigger an order routine. An evaluation of a predetermined counter reading for the imprints before or after sensors detect a low ink level / residual value serves for the indirect detection of an approach of the end of consumption, for example before changing a (ink tank / ribbon) cassette of a franking machine. After establishing a communication link between the franking machine and a remote data center and automatic generation and transmission of an order message, the latter including an identification code, the ordering of the consumables takes place after the ordering party is identified on the basis of the identification code. After identification, a search is carried out in a database in which a corresponding consumable is assigned to each customer. This simple ordering routine only allows one order of a predetermined consumable. However, a scanner for scanning the consumable in the device is advantageously dispensed with, since the type of consumable does not change.
Another ordering routine, which also allows the ordering of various consumables in large numbers, requires not only an identification code to be communicated, but also an order number for the various consumables. A search in a database for an assigned consumable can be omitted. The order number can consist of several parts and includes an order code and / or an identification number for the consumables. The device can have a chip card read / write unit for semi-automatic input or a scanner for automatic input of the order code and / or the identification number.
After reaching a threshold value for a consumption quantity before changing a consumable and after establishing a communication connection to the remote data center, an encrypted order message is generated and transmitted automatically in the device. If one and the same user can be assigned to the device, the serial number of the device serves as an identification code.
In the aforementioned example, the order message includes the serial number of the device, the order code aggregated with the consumables and an identification number. The latter includes a number identifying the type of consumable and a number identifying the ordered quantity of consumable, possibly a check digit. After identifying the customer using the identification code (serial number of the device), the associated consumables are determined using the order message and the order is triggered by a shipping department. In the simplest case, an authenticity of the order can be checked in the data center using the Compare operation if there is a match between the order code and a reference order code which is assigned to the serial number of the device in the database and thus indirectly to the orderer.
Another ordering routine, which permits the ordering of the same consumable in large numbers, requires not only an identification code but also an order number. The latter contains a number for the quantity corresponding to the number of consumables ordered. The serial number of the device can be used again as identification code. A search in a database for a consumable assigned to the serial number of the device can provide the type of consumable.
- recognize the approach of a change of a consumable,
- after the aforementioned recognition, to display a message on the display and to generate an order message,
- to establish a communication connection to a remote data center for the transmission of the order message.
Optionally, the communication link is also used for notification of the device after checking the authenticity of the order. It is possible to change the operation of the device, if the successful Verification that the order has not been authenticated.

Figure 6, block diagram of the franking machine of the type JetMail®. The perspective view of a
In a first variant, an order is placed after a comparison of a consumption variable with a threshold value. The microprocessor works through an indirect or direct measuring method, which is adapted to the type of consumable and supplies the consumption size. The threshold value can be pre-programmed by the manufacturer, entered via the keyboard or loaded from a remote data center using a chip card or modem.
deshalb nachfolgend Sicherheitsmodul genannt.
In a second variant, after a comparison, a message is first generated to the customer and a user input which is to be evaluated to confirm that an order is to be triggered. The order is triggered after a message is generated and sent to the data center. The message can be encrypted to prevent an unauthorized order. A customer can also be given the opportunity to change the number of consumables to be ordered using the user interface. It is also provided that the number of consumables to be ordered can be changed to zero or at least one key is pressed in order to suppress the automatic order. Part of the notification is an order number and the serial number of the device, ie the security module (PSD) of the meter or franking machine. The PSD (Postal Security Device) is part of modern franking machines and is used for billing and booking the franked mail and security-related routines such as credit reloading, and is therefore referred to below as the security module. Each of the requesting devices uses an automatic routine, which preferably uses the serial number of the device as an identification code. The latter allows the location of a franking machine to be determined and thus provides the destination address for sending the order. A service for consumables was installed in the data center, which checks the authenticity of the order based on an identification of the customer or the requesting user and an evaluation of the order number in the data center. The serial number of the device is assigned to a customer in a database of the data center.
The order numbers for various consumables are listed in a list that is stored in a non-volatile memory in the device's memory. The aforementioned list can also be loaded from a remote data center using a chip card or a modem. It is a significant logistical advantage to be able to order different consumables, regardless of their type, using the same process, without the need for service personnel.
The order number can consist of several parts. A first part consists of an order code that is only assigned to a certain group of consumables that can be reordered for the device and also enables proof that the order was automatically triggered by the device itself without any action on the part of a person. An identification number forms a second part and identifies the type of consumable. An optional third part contains the quantity and an optional fourth part contains a check digit to check the order for errors. The order number, together with other data, forms the aforementioned message. An order code belonging to a certain group of consumables and an identification number for the type of consumable are generated by the manufacturer of the consumables. It is assumed that an order code for an ink tank cartridge is incorrect if the serial number belongs to a device with thermal transfer printing, because the ink tank cartridge naturally does not belong to a group of consumables for thermal transfer printers. The assignment of the order code to a certain group of consumables is stored in a database in the form of a data record with a reference order code together with the serial number of the device. This order code has a predetermined relationship to the reference order code.
An identification number forms a second part of the order number and identifies the type of consumable. In the data center, the authenticity can be checked using the order code. This does not rule out that in one variant the authenticity is determined on the basis of other data. At least part of the order message can also be transmitted in encrypted form and used for the authenticity check. The advantage of checking in the data center is that of course no manipulation can be carried out there.

It is provided that a sensor allows the presence of consumables to be determined directly or indirectly according to a physical principle of action, the consumable being a solid body. For example, the consumable is an ink ribbon for a franking machine according to FIG. 1. A
In principle, the solution according to the invention can also be applied to franking machines of a different type. For another franking machine - not shown - it is provided that the consumable is an ink jet print head with an integrated ink tank or a cartridge. Such a disposable print head is, for example, the Siemens type DHP50.
FIG. 3 shows a circuit diagram of a detector which reliably detects the removal or replacement of the consumable even when the device is switched off and is not supplied with system voltage U s . The detector has a standard lithium battery BAT, which supplies a memory with a memory maintenance voltage of approx. 3V. A first switch S1 is actuated when the consumable is removed or changed. For example, a mechanical contact is opened, which interrupts the voltage supply to the memory by the lithium battery BAT. This voltage supply is detected and causes the closing of a second switch S2, which is preferably implemented as a CMOS circuit. The RESET input of the memory is thereby connected to ground (L level), which leads to the secure deletion of the memory content of the memory. Otherwise, when the device is switched on, there is a positive voltage U s = +4.5 to + 5V (H level) at the reset input via a resistor R and diode D1, or a positive voltage U BAT = +2 via diode D2 when the device is switched off. 5 to + 3V (H level) on. The memory can be designed as an SRAM, which can be equipped with a code by the
For a franking machine according to FIG. 4 it is provided that the consumable is an ink tank filled with ink. This solution also requires the presence of a modem and a sensor that detects the approach of a change or the use of a new consumable. It is provided that the franking machine has a sensor and a control unit with processor, which is programmed to generate a message after the aforementioned recognition and to display it and, if necessary, to evaluate a user input in connection with the order, which is an encrypted order message is transmitted to the data center by modem.
For example, for any peripheral device, it is provided that the consumable is in a non-solid state of matter. For a peripheral device it is provided that the consumable is a specific liquid for a letter humidifier and sealer. The latter can be part of an automatic letter feeder. Usually, however, there is at least one container which is a solid body and can be provided with a marking.
In another case, a chip is used in which the code word is stored. By establishing a connection, for example via electrical contacts or wirelessly, the code word can be read out by scanner when the new consumables are installed.
In the perspective view of a franking machine of the JetMail® type, shown from the right in FIG. 4, there is in principle an internal data connection to the

heraus: DER TINTENVORRAT IST AUFGEBRAUCHT. BITTE
Kontakt geschlossen. Die Frankiermaschine erkennt durch diesen
Kontakt, daß ein neues Verbrauchsmaterial installiert wurde. In
The
After opening the
When the new consumable is docked, a contact is automatically closed. The franking machine recognizes through this contact that a new consumable has been installed. Depending on a hole coding on the back of the ink tank, the original ink type (post red, fluorescent red, etc.) can be detected using suitably designed contacts.
At an ink level before the ink tank cartridge is operated with the reserve ink quantity or at an ink low level after an end signal has been given, i.e. if less than 200 frankings are possible, a user-adjustable threshold value is reached, which triggers an automatic consumable order. To do this, a connection is established with the manufacturer's data center. Modern franking machines are all already equipped with a modem so that they can communicate with the manufacturer's data center. This is usually used to get a credit amount loaded from the data center if the corresponding memory has been franked frankly. The transmission of the order message requires an additional communication routine. When the franking machine is loaded remotely, known data protection measures are used to prevent the code words from being eavesdropped on the transmission link. It is therefore advantageous to encrypt the order message with a DES (Data Encryption Standard) or with another known encryption algorithm which is also used for data backup when loading the franking machine, for example with a credit.
The data center receives the order message for a consumable 95 together with a serial number of the

Tinte kennzeichnend ist.FIG. 6 shows a block diagram of a franking machine of the JetMail® type with a
