Abstract

An endoscope has an elongate insertion section having a distal end with an illumination window and an observation window. An objective optical system is installed at the observation window, and a single solid state imaging element is provided with its imaging surface placed at the focus position of the objective optical system. A filter section is placed near the imaging surface of the solid state imaging element, and a first filter and a second filter are two dimensionally arranged on the filter section. The first filter has wide range wavelength transmission characteristics in a visible region, and the second filter has narrow band wavelength transmission characteristics in the visible region.
