Such an image projection device is described for example in DE 102 54 911 A1. The light source used herein has a board with a plurality of red, green and blue light emitting diodes. A drive circuit is used to send out the diodes which emit light of the same color at the same time, and the diodes which emit light of different color sequentially, ie in temporal succession. Furthermore, a polarization beam splitter, a reflective display field on which image information is specified, and a projection module comprising a projection optical system and a projection surface are provided.
The different colors of the light emanating from the diodes repeatedly fall sequentially in the polarization beam splitter and from there, depending on the Polarization direction of the radiation components, to the display field, by which the image information is impressed on the light. The projection module makes the image information visually perceptible to a viewer.
The reflective display field is designed as LCoS display. In principle, LCoS displays are reflective LCD displays. The image-forming surface of an LCoS display consists of a liquid crystal layer, which is provided on the back with a reflective aluminum layer. The liquid crystals form a large number of surface areas, so-called pixels, with edge lengths of 8 × 8 μm to 20 × 20 μm. In the following description, these pixels will be referred to predominantly as picture display elements. Electrodes can be applied to each of these pixels separately an electrical voltage (in this case, an AC voltage). Depending on whether or not voltage is applied to a pixel, the polarization direction of the light is rotated or not as it is reflected at that pixel. With the application of the voltage, that is, with control of the pixels, the polarization direction of the light, with respect to each individual pixel, is influenced. Namely, the polarization direction of the light is rotated through 45 ° each time through the liquid crystal layer, so that when entering the display and the exit from the display, a rotation of 90 ° comes about.
A major disadvantage of the image projection device described in DE 102 54 911 A1 is that the light coming from the light source is not efficiently utilized, since only a partial beam path with a first polarization plane to the projection module, while the partial beam path with the second polarization plane to an absorber is steered and thus lost for image presentation.
Based on this, the invention has the object, image projection devices of the type described above so that the light output is significantly increased compared to the known in the prior art solutions.
This object is achieved according to the invention with an image projection device of this type, in which the image modulation arrangement comprises a polarization beam splitter and two reflective display fields, each of the display fields having an array of separately controllable image display elements, with the control of certain image display elements image information are given and by the specific image display elements, the polarization direction is changed by incident and then reflected light, the still unmodulated illumination beam path is first directed onto the polarization beam splitter for splitting into an s-polarized part beam path and a p-polarized part beam path, the s-polarized part beam path emanating from the polarization beam splitter is directed onto the image display elements of the first display field, the p beam originating from the polarization beam splitter polarized part of the beam path is directed to the image display elements of the second display panel, which is reflected by the specific image display elements of the first display field, thereby changed in its polarization direction and now p-polarized light to the projection optics, and reflected from the specific image display elements of the second display field, while in its polarization direction changed and now s-polarized light is also directed to the projection optics.
The reflective display panels are preferably designed as LCoS displays. In principle, however, DLP displays can also be provided as imaging elements.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the light source comprises a plurality of light source modules, wherein each light source module emits monochromatic light of a predetermined wavelength. A beam coupling optical system ensures that the light emitted by the individual light source modules is combined in a beam path, hereinafter referred to as an illumination beam path.
Advantageously, three light source modules are provided, each of the light source modules emitting monochromatic light of a wavelength. Each of these wavelengths corresponds to a base color. For example, a light source module can be provided which emits light of the primary color red; a light source module which emits light of the primary color green; and a third light source module which emits light of the primary color blue.
In the context of the invention, it is of course also to provide light source modules that emit light other than the aforementioned three primary colors red, green, blue, or light sources with light source modules for emitting light in more than three primary colors.
Particularly advantageous is an embodiment of the invention in which the beam coupling optics has two dichroic mirrors, wherein a first dichroic mirror is designed so that it reflects the light of the primary color red and transmits the light of the primary color green, the second dichroic mirror so formed is that it reflects the light of the primary color blue and transmits the light of the base color green, and the dichroic mirrors are arranged in relation to the light source modules such that the light of the primary color red and blue coming from the light source modules is reflected towards the beam shaping device while the green light color coming from the light source module passes both dichroic mirrors and reaches the beam shaping device.
The beam shaping device can advantageously consist of focusing optics, which are arranged facing the light source within the beam shaping device, a collimator, which is arranged facing the image modulation device, and a light tunnel arranged between the focusing optics and the collimator.
The light tunnel can be embodied as an internally mirrored light guide, for example as a waveguide with a square cross section, as a light guide cable or as a bundle of light guide cables.
The light source drive circuit is designed for repeated, sequential activation of the light source modules, so that light of the wavelengths emitted by the individual light source modules arrives at the two display fields in a predetermined cycle in chronological succession.
Particularly advantageously, each of the light source modules on a plurality of light emitting diodes, hereinafter abbreviated 's as a LED, each emitting light corresponding to the desired wavelength, in the preferred case the wavelengths of red, green and blue. In the context of the invention, the term LED is used as a synonym both for the term "light-emitting diode" and for the more general term "semiconductor light source".
According to the invention, the light source drive circuit is designed according to the principle of pulse width modulation, wherein the control of the individual LEDs in function of the integration of the output from the light source optical power occurs.
Particularly advantageous is each LED coupled to a switch associated with it, which is electronically controllable with respect to the duty cycle of the associated LED, and wherein the switch is in communication with a drive circuit, through which the duty cycle in response to the radiated during the switch-on of the LED in question optical energy is given as the equivalent of the thereby emitted optical power.
In this regard, the object underlying the invention is also achieved with a method for generating light of a predetermined wavelength, in which semiconductor light sources HL n which emit light in n different primary colors GF k (k = 1... N; n> 2), be switched on sequentially for a respective predetermined time t, wherein the semiconductor light sources HL n are subjected to a constant electric voltage U and an electric current equivalent to the optical energy to be radiated during the time t from the semiconductor light sources HL n .
Semiconductor light sources HL 1 can advantageously emit light of a first primary color GF k (k = 1), semiconductor light sources HL 2 emit light of a second primary color GF k (k = 2), and semiconductor light sources HL 3 emit light of a third primary color GF k (k = 3) radiate.
Particularly preferably, the semiconductor light sources HL 1 emit light of the base color GF k (k = 1) red, the semiconductor light sources HL 2 light of the base color GF k (k = 2) green and the semiconductor light sources HL 3 light of the base color GF k (k = 3) blue from; Each switching sequence over the primary colors red, green and blue across is shorter than the switching sequence that can be perceived by the human eye, so that depending on the respective predetermined for the semiconductor light sources HL n electrical current to the human eye, a color impression is created that a mixture from the basic colors.
In den zugehörigen Zeichnungen zeigenThe invention will be explained in more detail with reference to embodiments. In the accompanying drawings show

In the beam path of the light emitted by the light source, the light source 1 is followed by a beam shaping device 3, an image modulation device 4, a projection optical system 5 and a projection surface 6.
The light source 1 comprises three light source modules 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3. Each of the light source modules 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 has an array of rows and columns arranged in LEDs, which emit when activated by the light source drive circuit 2 light of a particular wavelength. Thus, the light source module 1.1 consists of LED 's "R" emitting only light of the primary color red, the light source module 1.2 consists of LED 's "G" emitting only light of the primary color green, and the light source module 1.3 consists of LED 's "B", which emit only light of the primary color blue. In addition, the light source 1 has two dichroic mirrors 7.1 and 7.2. The dichroic mirror 7.1 is designed to reflect light of the primary color red and to transmit light of the primary color green, while the dichroic mirror 7.2 is designed to reflect light of the primary color blue and to transmit light of the primary color green.
The dichroic mirror 7.1 is arranged relative to the light source module 1.1 such that the light emitted by the light source module 1.1 and thus by the LED 's "R" whose beam path is indicated by R in FIG. 1 is reflected toward the beam shaping device 3 Analogously, the dichroic mirror 7.2 is arranged relative to the light source module 1.3 so that the light emanating from the light source module 1.3 or from the LED 's "B" is likewise directed in the direction of the beam shaping device 3. This beam path is indicated symbolically in FIG. The two dichroic mirrors 7.1 and 7.2 are arranged so that the light coming from the light source module 1.3 or emitted by the LED 's "G" (designated by G in FIG. 1) passes through both dichroic mirrors 7.1 and 7.2 and to the beam shaping device 3 arrives.
It should be expressly understood that only the one cell array extending in the drawing plane is visible from the LED 's "R", "G", "B" in Figure 1. Further lines are parallel above or below the plane of drawing, and it is the column in which the LED extend 's are arranged in a direction perpendicular to the drawing plane, so that each light source module 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 of an array of arranged in rows and columns LEDs exist.
As is further apparent from FIG. 1, the beam shaping device 3 consists of a focusing optics 8, which occupies a position within the beam shaping device 3 which faces the light source 1, from a collimator 9 which faces the image modulation arrangement 4 within the beam shaping unit 3 is, and a light tunnel 10, which is arranged between the focusing lens 8 and the collimator 9. The light tunnel 10 may preferably be formed as an internally mirrored light guide.
The image modulation arrangement 4 comprises a polarization beam splitter 11 and, according to the invention, two reflective display fields 12.1 and 12.2. Both display fields are exemplified here as LCoS displays. Available and suitable are LCoS displays with up to 2048 x 1536 pixels (referred to as picture display elements in the context of the invention), which have edge lengths of 8 × 8 to 20 × 20 μm.
Each of the display fields 12.1 and 12.2 has an array of arranged in rows and columns, separately controllable image display elements. With the control of certain, depending on the image information to be displayed image display elements to be selected the illumination beam path, this image information can be impressed or modulated, as will be explained in more detail below.
The polarization beam splitter 11 has a splitter layer 13 which, depending on the structural design, either passes s-polarized light and reflects p-polarized light or conversely allows p-polarized light to pass through and reflects s-polarized light.
The splitter layer 13 is positioned with respect to the two display fields 12.1 and 12.2 and with respect to the collimator 9 so that the passing through the splitter layer 13 portion of the light coming from the collimator 9 reaches the display panel 12.1 and the light reflected from the display panel 12.1 from the splitter layer 13 Projection optics 5 is directed, while the reflected from the splitter layer 13 portion of the light coming from the collimator 9 is directed to the display panel 12.2 and the reflected light from the display panel 12.2 through the splitter layer 13 also passes through to the projection optics 5.
The light emerging from the image modulation arrangement 4, now modulated with image information and entering the projection optics 5, is projected onto the projection surface 6 by the projection optics 5, so that the image information there is visually perceptible.
The basic design of a projection optical system 5 is known from the prior art, for example from US 2003/0133080 A1, and therefore need not be explained in detail at this point. The same applies to the projection surface 6. This can be a white wall surface in the simplest case.
As can also be seen from FIG. 1, an image presetting and control circuit 14 is present whose outputs are connected both to the light source drive circuit 2 and to the display fields 12.1 and 12.2. The Bildvorgabe- and control circuit 14 is equipped with a symbolically shown in Figure 1 interface 15, via which the user of this image projection device, the images or image sequences can be specified, which are to be displayed on the projection surface 6. These can be both dynamic (moving) and static (still) representations of objects or scenes.
Der Komparator 20 kann beispielsweise ein Trigger sein.FIG. 2 shows the principle of the light source drive circuit 2 according to the invention. Thereafter, the light source driving circuit 2 includes an RS flip-flop 16 which generates a switching voltage for a switch 17. This switching voltage is applied to the control input of the switch 17. With the switching voltage, the power supply for LED ' s 18, which passes through the switch 17, on and off. This may be 's be a plurality of LEDs 18 which emit red light, for example. 18 are arranged downstream of the LED 's in the block diagram in Figure 2, an integrator 19, a comparator 20, having an input for a reference voltage, and a D flip-flop 21, whose output is connected to a control input of the RS flip-flop sixteenth The comparator 20 may be, for example, a trigger.
The comparator 20 compares the coming from the signal output of the integrator 19 integrated voltage value with the reference voltage and transmitted as a result of this comparison, a signal to the D flip-flop 21, which is used to synchronize this comparator signal with an example of the Bildvorgabe- and drive circuit 14 (in Fig. 2 not shown) predetermined system clock is used.
The synchronized comparator signal is then at the RS flip-flop 16, after which for a predetermined time period t the switching voltage for the switch 17 is output from the RS flip-flop 16, so that the LED 's 18 for that period of time t supplied with current and emit light ,
The operation of the image projection device according to the invention will be described below.
After the image to be displayed or an image sequence to be displayed has been predefined by the operator of the image projection device via the interface 15 (FIG. 1), a clock is advantageously also provided manually via the interface 15 by means of the image specification and control circuit 14 is present for the system clock, a start signal is triggered, which ensures that in the light source drive circuit 2 by means of the RS flip-flop 16 (see Fig.2) switching voltage for the switch 17 is generated, so that the LED 's 18 provided for Power t are supplied with time and light (for example) radiate the primary color red.
The current flowing through the LED 's 18 is converted by means of a current-voltage converter, such as an electrical resistance or a current shunt, not shown, in a voltage equivalent to the current and obtained therefrom by means of the integrator 19 an integrated voltage value. In the comparator 20, the integrated voltage value is continuously compared with the reference voltage and, as soon as the rising integrated voltage value has reached the reference voltage, output from the comparator 20, a signal which, after synchronization with the system clock in the D flip-flop 21 via the RS flip-flop 16 for the Interruption of the switching voltage for the switch 17 provides.
In an analogous manner, as here based on LED s 's described that emit light of the primary color red, circuits for controlling LED' are available that produce light of the primary colors green and blue. Thus, after the generation of the light of the primary color red, the actuation of those switches which are coupled to LED ' s "G" to produce the primary color green is carried out, and then the activation of those switches connected to LED ' s "B" to emit light the primary color blue are provided.
Thereafter, in the manner already described again the control of the switch 17, and in turn light of the primary color red is generated. This switching sequence across the primary colors red, green and blue is shorter than the switching sequence that the human eye can perceive, so that a flicker-free image is formed on the projection surface 6.
According to the invention - in contrast to the prior art - generated by means of the circuit arrangement described in Figure 2 light of the three primary colors red, green and blue on the basis of the integration of the output from the respective light sources power. Thereby, it is not necessary to keep the electric current flowing through the semiconductor light sources constant. Only the voltage is evaluated, and the rise of the voltage controls the switching on and off of the light source modules.
As can be seen from Fig. 1, the light emanating from the LED 's "R" is radiated onto the dichroic mirror 7.1, reflected therefrom and thereby enters the focusing optics 8. The light emitted by the LED 's "G" both passes The dichroic mirror 7.1 as well as the dichroic mirror 7.2 and also enters the focusing optics 8. The light emitted by the LED 's "B" blue light strikes the dichroic mirror 7.2 and is also reflected by this to the focusing optics 8.
By means of the focusing optics 8, the light is focused and coupled into the light tunnel 10 which follows the focusing optics 8. Due to the spontaneous multiple reflection of the radiation components at the tunnel inner wall, the intensity of the radiation in the radiation cross section is homogenized. The collimator 9 images the output surface of the light tunnel 10 onto the adjacent display fields 12.1 and 12.2, the polarization beam splitter 11 being included in the manner already described above.
As shown in the display fields 12.1 and 12.2, for example, LCoS displays.
Each of the display fields 12.1 and 12.2 consists of an array of arranged in rows and columns, separately controllable image display elements of which certain, depending on an image to be displayed image display elements are driven, with the control of an electrical voltage applied to the electrodes of the image display element in question becomes. If a voltage is applied to the electrodes of an image display element, the polarization direction of the incident light and then reflected by this image display element is rotated. Thus, if s-polarized light enters the display field 12.1 or 12.2, p-polarized light returns from the picture display elements supplied with voltage; the light with respect to the direction of polarization is returned unmodified, ie s-polarized, from the picture reproduction elements which are not supplied with voltage. And vice versa, when p-polarized light enters, s-polarized light comes back from the powered picture display elements and p-polarized light from the non-powered picture display elements.
If light of the primary color red is now emitted by the light source 1 for the period t, this is directed to the cross-sectional shape of the exit surface of the light tunnel 10 by means of the collimator 9 in a planar manner on the splitter layer 13 of the polarization beam splitter 11.
In this case, as shown in Figure 3, s-polarized light passes through the splitter layer 13 and strikes the display panel 12.1. In this case, the area illuminated in the display field 12.1 corresponds in width and height proportionally to the size of the image to be displayed on the projection surface 6. It will be illuminated in this area on the display panel 12.1 image display elements with s-polarized light. Of the image display elements that are driven in response to the image to be displayed on the screen 6 or at the electrodes voltage applied, p-polarized light comes back, hits again on the splitter layer 13 and is directed by this to the projection optics 5.
The light reflected by the non-driven image display elements of the display panel 12.1 is not p-polarized, therefore passes through the splitter layer 13 and does not reach the projection optics 5.
In contrast, the p-polarized radiation component of the light coming from the collimator 9 and impinging on the splitter layer 13 is reflected by the splitter layer 13 and due to the 45 ° inclination of the splitter layer 13 is directed relative to the irradiation direction to the display field 12.2. Again, the area illuminated on the display panel 12.2 corresponds in width and height proportionally to the size of the image to be displayed on the projection surface 6. All picture display elements located in the display area 12.2 in this area area are illuminated with p-polarized light. Of the image display elements which are driven in response to the image information to be displayed on the projection surface 6 or to whose electrodes a voltage is applied, s-polarized light returns, passes through the splitter layer 13 and arrives at the projection optics 5. The light reflected by the non-driven image display elements of the display panel 12.2 is not s-polarized, is therefore deflected at the splitter layer 13 and does not reach the projection optics 5.
The s- and p-polarized radiation components, which are now modulated into the projection optics 5 with the image information, are projected on the projection surface 6 by means of the projection optics 5, so that the image to be displayed or an image sequence to be displayed can be visually perceived on the projection surface 6 ,
The projection optics 5 consists of optical lenses with spherical or aspherical curved Lichtein- and light exit surfaces. It collects the light coming from the display fields 12.1 and 12.2 or from the polarization beam splitter 11 and forwards it to the projection surface 6, whereby the image display elements of both display fields 12.1 and 12.2 are enlarged on the projection surface 6.
According to the invention, both the s-polarized and the p-polarized radiation components for displaying the image on the projection surface 6 are used in the manner described by means of the two display panels 12.1 and 12.2. As a result, in contrast to the prior art, in which only one display panel is used, the luminous efficacy is much higher, so that with the invention light sources can be used more effectively or operated with lower power and lower energy consumption. This has significant advantages in terms of the size of the image projection device and counteracts the desire for minimization.
In the exemplary case described here, in which the illumination light from LED 'emanating s, a multiplication of the light output by a factor of 2 is achieved since LEDs emit random polarized light and the light emitted by the LED's light equally between the is distributed to both displays.
As a result, s-polarized light first strikes the display field 12.1 and, modulated with image information, returns from there as p-polarized light. The display panel 12.2 at the same time encounters s-polarized light and returns therefrom as p-polarized light provided with the same image modulation. After passing through the polarization beam splitter 11, the radiation components of both polarization directions are also reunited here. In both cases, both according to Figure 3 and Figure 4, it is necessary to adjust the display fields 12.1 and 12.2 to each other so that within the illumination beam path, the positions of the image display elements on the display panel 12.1 the positions of the image display elements on the display panel 12.2 in order that the light reflected from a given position on the display panel 12.1 hits the projection surface 6 at the same location as the light reflected from the equivalent position on the display 12.2.
This adjustment can be done manually or with the aid of microscopes, after the adjustment both display fields 12.1 and 12.2 can be glued to the outer surfaces of the polarization beam splitter 11, so that a later positional shift is no longer possible.
