ARTHUR BELL, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
BOX-LID.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. v15, 1911.
Application filed September 22, 1910. I Serial No. 583,194. 7 v 1 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in'the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Lids; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same.
This invention relates to improvements in box covers or lids.
The invent-ion consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box having a cover constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 1s a vertical cross sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 1s a plan view of a modified form of the invention. Fig. 4 is a ver-- tical sectional view of the same.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1. denotes the box which may be of any size and shape and which is here shown as of rectangular form. The cover 2 of the box may be removably engaged therewith as shown-1n Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings or may be hinged thereto as shown in F 1g. ,4 by means of a fabric strip 2. The cover 2 is formed of an outer section 3 of a size and shape corresponding to the box to which it is to be applied; having therein a View opening 4 and provided with a flange 2 extending from the edge thereof with an inner section 5 corresponding in shape to the outer section 3, the outside diameter of which is substantially the same as the inside diameter of the section 3 to adapt said inner section to fit into and closely engage the outer section, said sections being held together by The inner section has formed therein a View opening. 6 corresponding in size and shape with the opening 4: inthe outer section.
Between the apertured top or body portime of the inner and outer sections 3 and 5 is arranged a sheet 7 of transparent material, which is preferably formed of celluloid, gelatin, mica or similar light material same size as the body portion of the sections 3 and 5 and when arranged as described will form a transparent panel between the openings in the sections of the cover.
.In Figs. 1 and 2 the cover is shown as having arranged between the sections and below the transparent panel a lining 8 preferably of paper having any suitable decorations in colors or formed by perforations representing lace work, and which projects inbeyond the edge of the opening to the desired extent, to form a neat and attractive border or edging around the transparent panel; The transparent sheet 7 and the lining when used are both held in place in the outer section of the cover by the inner section without the use of paste or other fastening means. The inner edges of the two sections of the cover are preferably covered and securely held together by the inwardly turned and pasted edges of the outside paper covering of the box.
A box constructed in accordance with theinvention may have a View opening in its cover of any desired size or shape, said box being provided for the purpose of holding and exhibiting handkerchiefs, necktics, confectionery and the like.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invent-ion will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A box cover comprising similar inner and outer sections with alined openings formed therein, a transparent panel and a lining arranged between the sections and held in place in the outer section by thev .inner section, said lining projecting into the.
opening in the inner section, and a covering for the outer section extending over the edges of both sections to secure the sections together and clamp the panel and lining in place.
'2. As an article of manufacture, a box cover comprising similar inner and outer sections telescopingly engaged with each other and formed with contacting flanges at their edges and in their central portions with alined openings, a transparent panel corre-. sponding in size w th'the top'of the inner ecti n and aflenged to engage the under In testimony whereof I hzfire hereiii toset face of t e enter section whereby it will be my hand in presence of two subscribing Witheld in pesi lqn between the two sections to nesses.
close said openings, and a binding strip ARTH R BELL. 5 folded, over and secured to the edge flanges Witnesses:
of both sections to unite the latter and clamp HERMAN F. DEYERBERG,
the panel in position. J. ARTHUR HOFFMAN.
