UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN S. WRIKEMAN, OF KILGORE, OHIO.
HINGE.
Application filed October 26, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. VRIKEMAN, citizen of the United States, residing at Kilgore, in the county of Carroll and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hinges, and has for its object to provide a simply constructed hinge whereby a door or other swinging closure may be readily connected with and detached from a door or other frame without employing screws or like fastening devices.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described.
The improved hinge may be applied to doors of various sizes and to doors employed upon different forms of closures, but is more particularly designed for the spring hinges of screen doors, and for the purpose of illustration the improved hinge is shown applied to a conventional screen door, but it will be understood that the invention is not necessarily limited to any specific form of door or other swinging closure.
In the drawings employed to illustrate the invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a conventional screen door with a pair of the improved hinges applied; Fig. 2 is a view of a portion of the door frame with one of the permanent fixtures attached; Fig. 3 is a per spective view from the inside of one of the improved hinges, illustrating the construction of the pocket which fits over the stationary member. Fig. 4 is a detached perspective view of one of the stationary fix tures.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The hinges of screen doors are usually provided with springs to maintain them yieldably in closed position, and when the improved hinge is employed upon a screen door hinges having springs will be supplied, but it will be understood that the improved device is not necessarily limited to hinges Specification of Letters Patent.

spring passing through the other slot and bearing upon the leaf 11. By this means the spring operates to maintain the door to which the leaf 10 is attached, and indicated at 16, yieldably in closed'position. The leaf 11 is provided in its inner face with a pocket or socket 17 having overhanging edges with its inner edge extending in parallel relations and the outer edge inclined oblique to the longitudinal plane or axis of the pintle as represented in Fig. 2. A supporting member forms a part of the improved device and comprises a plate 18 adapted to be connected by screws or other suitable fastening devices 19 to the window frame, indicated at 20, the sides of the member 18 being formed to overhang and with one of the overhanging edges inclined to the vertical plane of the door frame and corresponding with the inclined edge of the hinge socket 17 and the other edge extending in parallel relation to the vertical plane of the door frame and corresponding with the straight edge of the socket. The socket 17 of the hinge is thus adapted to fit over the member 18 and closely engage the same, the side edges of the member 18 being formed to correspond and its frame will be retained in the same relative positions by the straight side of the member 18, and will not be thrown farther away or nearer to the door frame by any adjustment or movement which may occur between the members 11 and 18. This is an important feature of applicants device and materially increases its efiiciency and utility. Thus no matter how much the parts may wear the door will always retain its proper positionrelative to the casing, and will not bind therein or become abnormally loose.
If preferred the member 18 may be provided with a stop shoulder 21 to limit the movement of the member 11 in one direction. The members 18 are relatively thin and do not present a conspicuous appearance when applied to the door frames, and when painted the same color as the frame their appearance during the time that the door is removed are not noticeable.
It will thus be obvious that a simply constructed device is produced whereby a door or other similar closure may be det-a-chably supported and removed from or connected to the frame without the use of screws or other like fastening devices.
The improved device, as before stated, is particularly adapted for use in connection with screen doors which are required to be removed in the fall and replaced in the spring, and by employing the improved device the labor and time incident to the hanging of screen doors is reduced to a minimum, and can be very quickly accomplished by any person without previous skill, and the true setting of the door insured, so that no danger exists of supporting the door so that it will not hang true and close squarely against the stops.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new is:
A hinge comprising two leaves swingingly united, one of said leaves having a socket with the edges overhanging and with one of said edges extending in parallel relations and the other edge extending obliquely to the vertical plane of the leaves, and a supporting member adapted to be attached to a door frame and conforming to and engaging in said socket.
In testimony whereof, I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
