rootr-rnorno'ron.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 5, 1910.
Patented Sept. 123, 1911. Serial No. 553,633.
To (all whom it may. concern.
Be it known that l, Jon'n C. \Vnrson, citizen of the United States, residing at Kellerman, in the county of Tuscaloosa and State of Alabama. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot- Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention ,relates to foot protectors and has for its-objectthe provision of a comparatively simple and thoroughly efficient device of this character, especially designed to be worn by miners when working in coal and other ore and which serves to prevent fine particles of coal or ore from entering the shoe and cutting or otherwise lacerating the foot of the wearer.
A further object is to provide a foot protector including a legging having a water proof body portion, the lower end of which is extended laterally to form a guard adapted to cover the instep of the wearer, said body portion being connected by an elastic strip which encircles the leg and serves to retain the legging in posit-ion thereon.
A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency, as well as to reduce the cost of manufacture.
Further objects and advantages will ap pear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construe tion may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe protector or logging constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the application of the same; I ig. 2 is a perspective view of the elastic strip forming the. rear portion of the legging; Fig. 3 is a similar "'liew of the strip of water proof material forming the front of the legging; Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view.
Corresponding and like pa rts are referred,
to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The foot protector or legging forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises a body portion 5 preferably formed of a single strip of leather, canvas or other water proof material and having its opposite longitudinal edges connected by an elastic strip 6 which encircles the leg of the wearer and serves to re n the legging in position thereon. The lower end of the strip of water proof material constituting the body of the legging is flared outwardly shield 7, is a strap 10 preferably formed of copper and having its free end provided with a series of perforations 11, one of which is adapted to engage a hook or similar fastening device 12 secured to the guard 7 at the inner face of the shoe. The lower edge of the material constituting the guard or shield 7 is preferably folded upon itself to form a reinforcing bead 13, thus to pre vent raveling of the material. It will here be noted. that the elastic strip 6 extends from the attaching band 9 to the base of the guard or shield 7 so that the lower end of the elastic strip fits over the heel of the shoe, as indicated at 14. It will also be noted that the intermediate portion of themctallic strap 10 extends beneath the instep of the shoe and bears against the heel of the latter so that when the strap 10 is adjusted, the guard or shield 7 will be forced downwardly over the instep, thus to prevent accidental displacement of said guard.
The legging preferably extends the entire height of the leg of the wearer and is positioned on the leg next to the skin so as to prevent fine particles of coal from working downwardly between the legging and the shoe and cuttingor otherwise lacerating the foot of the wearer.
The device is extremely simple in construction and admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A legging including an impcrforate front scctionformcd of a single piece of nonelastic water proof material having smooth continuous interior and exterior walls and adapted to embrace the major portion of the circumference of the leg of the wearer between the knee and instep, a rear section formed of a single strip of elastic material of the same length as but of less Width than the front section and havingits opposite longitudinal edges overlapping and permanently secured to the longitudinal edges of the front section and its interior and exterior Walls smooth and unobstructed throughout the entire length thereof, said front section having its lower end flared laterally to form an integral guard for the instep and provided with a terminal reinforcing bead entirely surrounding the lower edge of said guard. an elastic band encircling the legging at the top thereof and having its lower edge only permanently secured to the upper edges of the front and rear sections, a fastening device secured to one side of theguard above the reinforcing bead, and an attaching strap fastened to the other side of the guard and adapted to extend beneath the mste of the shoe and in contact With the rein orcing head for engagement with said fastening device.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
