ROBERT KLOTZ, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 3, 1911..
Application filed April 8, 1907. Serial No. 366,952.
To all 'whom it may concern.' i Be it known that I, Ronnn'r Kto'rz, a citi- `zen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a complete specification.
This invention relates to improvements in advertising devices and has for its object the production of a device of such unique design as to attract the attention of all, and also to provide a device suitable for use as a desk fixture, such as a combined stamp or label holder and ink well, and which Yacts when the stamp receptacle is opened, to present a dampened surface on which to moisten the stamps.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device embodying the bust of any person who-m it is desired to bring prominently before the public, as for inst-ance political personages, or persons whose names are associated With articles of manufacture OI' Commerce.
The invention consists of the matters hereinafter described in the specification and more fully pointed out and defined in the appended claims.
In th'e drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevatio-n of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
As shown in said drawings: The device embodies the general outline of the bust of the individual to be represented and comprises a casing 1 of any preferred construction and material, and on which the head 2 is mounted. Said casing may be of any desired shape, and, as shown, it is provided at each end thereof with a receptacle 1 for ink or other material and which opens at the top and is closed by a hinged lid 12. Said receptacles are adapted to contain ink or other material usually used about a desk.
The lower jaw 3 is pivoted in the rear portion of the head on pins 3 and the forward end thereof, or the chin, is adapted to drop down within the collar 4: when the mouth is opened. A shaft 45 is journaled in the side walls of the casing adjacent the lower rear corners thereof, and a rod or arm A6 is rigidly engaged on said shaft and extends upwardly into the head. Carried on the upper end of said arm 6 is the tongue comprising a plate 7 on which is carried, as shown, a sponge, or other absorbent material 8,
adapted to contain moisture. A forked lever 9 is rigidlyengaged at one end to the shaft 5 and normally extends upwardly and forwardly therefrom at an angle of approximately 45 degrees, as shown in full lines in Fig. 2. Near its forward end said lever is pivoted to the lower end of the link 9, the upper end of which is pivoted to the forward end of the jaw 3. The weight of t-he jaw is such that it tends to force the link 9 and consequently the forward end of the lever 9 downwardly, thereby projecting the tongue from the mouth, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
The casing is open at its front and a drawer 10 is slidably engaged therein and is provided with a downwardly inclined rear wall 10 adapted to slide beneath the lever 9, which has a roller 92 journaled on the front end thereof and is adapted to travel on said inclined wall. At the top of said inclined wall is a flat ledge 102 on which the roller rests when the drawer is closed.
A flanged receptacle 1l is provided in the crown of the hat 12, and a cover 1l fits over the crown and closes said receptacle. Connected to the bottom of said receptacle is a pipe 13 which opens into one side of the valve casing 13 supported b said pipe above the base of the tongue. n the opposite side of said casing from the pipe 13 is a pipe 132, which opens from the casing and extends forwardly and downwardly to near the mouth. A valve closure 13vs is rotatively engaged in said valve easing and is provided with an aperture therethrough which, when the closure is in one position, is in register with the pipes 13 and 13" and permits water from the receptacle to fiow therethrough onto the tongue. Said closure is provided at one end of the valve casing with a pair of arms 14. and 14, the former of which is directed downwardly and forwardly, and the latter of which is directed downwardly and rearwardly and are adapted to contact respectively with lugs 15 and 15 on the rear end of the tongue which act to operate the valve.
The operation is as follows: The receptacle 11 is filled with water and the drawer 10 may contain postage stamps or the like and when the drawer is opened, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the forward end of the jaw is permitted to drop as the inclined wall of the drawer is withdrawn from beneath the front end of the lever 9. As the tongue moves forwardly the lug l5 contacts with the arm let and turns the valve closure to open position, thereby permitting water to flow from the receptacle to the sponge on the tongue and wet the same. As the drawer is closed the incline is forced beneath the front end of the lever 9 thereby raising the jaw and drawing the tongue inwardly, and, as it moves inwardly, causes the lug l5 to engage the arm 14 and close the valve.
Thile I have shown the device as embodied in a stamp or label holder, it obviously is as well adapted for use as a match holder, in which case, the tongue may be provided with a roughened surface on which to ignite the matches. Obviously also many details of form and construction may be varied without departing from the principles of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
l. The combination with a head having a jaw pivoted therein, of a tongue supported in the head by means adapted to permit its protrusion, and a drawer normally in engagement with said means and adapted by disengagement therefrom to permit t-he jaw to open and the tongue to project simultaneously.
