To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PETER B. BUCH, citizen of the United States, residing at University Place, in the county of Lancaster and State ofNebrasla, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foun-` tain-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention has to do with fountain brushes and incre particularly fountain brushes of the flexible-tube type; and it has for its object to provide a simple, compact and efficient fountain brush in which a flexible conduit, of non-porous material, is utilized to serve the two-fold function of discharging the substance to be spread and lending increased strength and durability to the fieXible dauber by which the spreading of the contents is effected, and is also utilized to prevent the dauber absorbing oil from the substance.

The invention will be best understood by reference to the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying illustration of one specific embodiment thereof, while its scope will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In the drawings which are hereby made a part hereof: Figure l is an elevation of a fountain brush constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vert-ical sect-ion of the upper portion of the brush. Fig. 8 is a view of the discharge end of the brush as it appears with the cap removed. Fig. t is a cross-section taken through the dauber and the flexible tube which the dauber surrounds on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 shows a modification of the cap.

Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referring to which:

A is a paste-container which is preferably a collapsible tube, formed in the ordinary manner and of the conventional material or of any other material suitable to its purpose, and is closed at one end c. In furtherance of my invention the tube A is provided at its opposite end with a central discharge nipple o, of tin or other suitable stiff material, a wall c, of similar material, which surrounds the base of said nipple and is suitably joined to the sides of the tube A, and a wall d, of the same material as the nipple b and wall c, which is fixed to said wall c and surrounds and is separated by an intervening 1 Y space from the nipple o. The nipple o is provided with downwardly and outwardly inclined prongs e, and the wall l with downwardly and inwardly inclined prongs f; the said prongs being preferably employed in retaining in position the flexible discharge conduit B and the dauber C.v The flexible discharge conduit B is formed of rubber, oil-cloth or analogous material in order to enable it to serve the highly important purpose of preventing the absorption of oil from the paste in tube A by the dauber C, and its connection to the nipple b is preferably strengthened by a fine wire f that is tightly bound around its lower and inner portion, as shown. The dauber C may be made of bristles, sheeps skin or other material suitable to the purpose of my invention without involving' departure from the scope thereof, though I prefer to form it of felt and to arrange it snugly between the conduit B and the wall Z in which position it will be securely retained by the before mentioned barbs f on wall (Z. The outer ends of the conduit B and dauber C are arranged iush, and consequently it will be manifest that while the conduit will lend increased strength and durability to the dauber and will efficiently lead paste from the interior of the tube to the surface to which the paste is to be applied, it will in no measure interfere with the manipulation of the dauber necessary to properly spread the paste over the surface.

I) is a metallic cap which is designed to be placed over thedauber C and wall CZ as shown in Fig. l. When the said cap is in the position sta-ted it will obviously prevent evaporation of the contents of the tube A, and when it is removed the contents of the tube may be forced therefrom by compressing the tube.

My novel fountain brush is designed more particularly for containing and applying shoe paste, and by virtue of the described construction and relative arrangement of the nipple o, fiexible conduit B and dauber C, the dauber will last in a state of eiliciency until all of the contents of the tube have been discharged and used.

It will be gather-ed from the foregoing that notwithstanding the utility of the dauber C and its appurtenances the same adds only a little to the cost of the paste container.

As shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the modified cap D of the device is bell shaped although it may equally as well be of the form shown in the preceding figures of the drawings.

While I have shown and described one form of niy invention, it is to be understood that I am not limited to the details or the forni or relative arrangements of parts disclosed, but that modifications may be made therein, without departing from the spirit thereof.

I-Iaving described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

A fountain brush comprising a container having a relatively short neck formed with outwardly and downwardly inclined barbs, a

relatively long conduit fitted upon the neck and held thereon by the barbs, the said conduit being elastic and flexible throughout the greater portion of its length, a wall upst-anding from the container and surrounding the conduit and spaced therefrom with inwardly extending barbs, a dauber held between the said wall and the conduit and having its upper edge in substantially the saine plane with the edge of the upper end of the conduit of the container, and a cover' fitted removably upon the dauber.
