FOOT-COVERING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application tiled April 6, 1908. `Serial No. 425,343.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HA'rrIE PAULINE MERRICK, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brookline, county of Middlesex, Commonwealth lof Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Coverings, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the drawings which accompany the same.
My invention relates to a foot covering that may be made of paper, cloth or similar material, designed for more or less temporary use.
The object of my invention is to provide a foot covering, inexpensive in construction, for use in cases of infectious or contagious diseases by physicians, nurses and others employed in the. care of those having such diseases, to be worn as a foot covering while they are in the presence of the sick persons, or in the house where such persons are located. The foot covering is to -be removed and destroyed or sterilized or. leaving the rooms or the house where such persons are located, thus to prevent the spread of the germs of contagious or infectious diseases.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification-Figure l is a plan showing the form of the material from which my foot coverin is made; Fig. 2 is an isometric elevation o my improved foot covering folded and fastened together ready for use.
In the drawings, 1 designates the body part of material used in the manufacture of my improved foot covering, which material is preferably composed of a single piece cut out to the shape shown in Fig. 1.
When the foot covering is made of one piece of material of the shape shown in Fig. 1, it has the portion 2 shaped to form the top of the toe of the covering when folded back on the dotted line 3. The sides 4 and 5 are ,folded inwardly on the dotted lines 6 and 7, preferably' so that the portions 8 and 9 will overlap, as shown in Fig. 2. If the foot covering is made of aper or other inexpensive material it may e made sul ciently strong to serve the purpose by overlapping the portions 8 and 9 and by fastenin them together and to the portion 2.
he heel part is formed from the two inner 4portions 10 and 11 by first folding them on the dotted lines 12 `and 13 to stifen the back of the heel, and then overlapping The purpose of my invention is to make a foot covering thatis comparatively inexpensive; that may be easily put on and taken off the feet; that is flexible and easily folded for transportation or to be carried by the person who is to use it; and that can be quickly burned or sterilized after it has been used.
My improved foot covering is designed for use in surgical cases, and in cases of contagious or infectious diseases,`by surgeons, physicians, nurses or attendants, to prevent the carrying and spreading of the erms of infectious or contagious diseases rom. the presence of those suffering from such diseases, and to revent the carrying of germs into the surglcal wards or operating rooms of hos itals and such institutions by the feet o those having businesswithin such places.
What I claim is- A foot covering made of one piece of flexible material cut to form the sole and sides of the foot covering and folded upwardl from the toe, the sides thereafter foldedy upwardly to lap over the toeiece and each other at the toe and heel, an the folds secured together with fasteners at the heel and the top of the toe, substantially as shown and described, the folds of the toe, heel and upper so overlapping as to leave no seams or openings near the sole part of the foot covering.
In testimon whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, in t e presence of two subscribing witnesses, this the 23rd day of March, A. D.` 1908. l
I-IATTIE PAULINE MERRICK. Witnesses:
