Description
H. S. THOMAS.
STILT.
PPLIGATION FILED AUG. 11, 1911 Patented J an. 2, 1912.
A TTOR/VEYS' HARVEY SHERMAN THOMAS, OF FORT THOMAS, KENTUCKY.
STILT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led. August 11, 1911.
Patented Jan. 2, 1912.
serial No. 643,521.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY S. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fort Thomas, in the county of Campbell and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Stilt, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to stilts, and it has for its object to provide one having an adjustable foot block, with means by which the adjustable foot block may be firmly held in position on the stilt staff after adjustnient.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following complete specification, in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, in which- Figure l is a perspective view showing a portion of a staff with a foot block, and the means which I provide for holding the block relatively to the staff; Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 8 of Fig. 2; and Fig. i is a perspective view showing the clamping member.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that a sta' 5 is provided, which is engaged by the upwardly extending portion 6 which is integral with the foot block 7. This upwardly extending portion 6 has sides 8, spaced from each other and normally disposed one at each side of the staff 5, the upwardly extending portion 6 of the foot block also having a transversely disposed portion 9, which connects the sides 8. This transversely disposed portion 9 of the foot block tapers downwardly to the body of the foot block as shown in Figs. l and 2 of the drawings. Disposed around the stati 5, and also around the upwardly extending portion 6 of the foot block 7, there is an angular member 10, with an opening 11. The side l2 of this angular member l0 is disposed obliquely relatively to the opposite side of the angular member 10, the side 12 fitting snugly against the tapering portion 9. of the foot block 7.
In using the stilt the angular member 10 is pressed downwardly, until its side 12 rests against the body of the foot block 7 when it will be found that the foot block 7 with its upwardly extending portion 6 may be adjusted up or down as desired on the staff 5. When the foot block 7 is disposed at the desired position relatively to the stad 5, the angular member l0 is pressed upwardly, which will hold the foot block with its upwardly extending portion 6 firmly'in place on the staff.
It will be understood that the foot block 7 may be used to serve as a bracket, and that this bracket may be secured at any desired height on the sta 5 in order that the bracket may be used for any desired purpose.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A vertical member, a block having an upwardly extending portion with sides disposed one at each side of the vertical member, and an outwardly extending portion, the first-mentioned sides being connected by the upwardly extending portion of the block which tapers downwardly to the body of the block, and a member fitting snugly around the vertical member, and the upwardly extending portion of the block, for holding the block in position relatively to the vertical member.
2. A vertical member, a block having an upwardly extending portion with sides disposed against opposite sides of the vertical member, the upwardly extending portion of the block tapering downwardly, and a member fitting snugly around the vertical member, and the upwardly extending portion of the block, the inner sides of the second-mentioned member converging downwardly for fitting the vertical member and the tapering surface of the block.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HARVEY SHERMAN THOMAS.
