UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANNIE CECELIA KNOWLSON, OF ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN.
NOSTRIL-EXPANDING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ANNE CECELTA KNowLsoN, of the'city of Ann Arbor, in the State of Michigan, one of the United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nostril-Expanding Devices, of which the following the specification.
My invention relates to improvements in nostril expanding devices, and the object of the invention is to produce a device of this class, which will facilitate easy breathing especially when asleep, and thus do away with conditions brought about by nasal obstruction and prolapse.
My invention consists of a spring member comprising a front bar terminating at each end in a coil from which extends an upwardly projecting portion on the end of which is afiixed a button with a soft pad on the outside and alooped wire extending from the button downwardly, then upwardly again and terminating in an outer button having apad on the inside and designed to co-act at each side with the first mentioned button, so as to grip the mucousmembrane and cuticle of the nose,'the parts being arranged and constructed in detail as. hereinafter more particularly explained.
Figure 1, is a perspective view showing my improved nostril expanding device in Fig. 2., is a perspective detail of the nostril expanding device.
In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
A is awire spring member, which is in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and has a central bar A terminating in coils A having upwardly projecting portions A A which extend into a button A of any suitable form with a rim A within which is held a pad A of comparatively soft material, such as cork. It will be noticed that the pad is on the outside. From the button A the wire extends downwardly in loop form A and then upwardly preferably above the level of the button A at which point a supplemental minor button A is Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May. '1, 1911.

provided having a soft inner pad A fitting within the rim A This pad may be also of cork or other suitable material. The object of having the pad of soft material is because it is designed to be pressed against the mucous-membrane of the nose.
To insert the nostril expander in position it is merely necessary to spread apart the button A from the button A with the thumb and fore-finger of each hand then insert it into the nose, and then release the buttons when they will spring inwardly of their own tension and securely grip the cuticle and mucous-membrane of the nose, and
hold such nostrils apart sufiiciently far to 7 provide for easy breathing, and prevent the walls of the nostrils collapsing. The resiliency of the nostril expander keeps these walls out as the spring pressure is outwardly.
The nostril expander may be readily adjusted at different widths of nostrils by bending the bar A, so as to bring the buttons close together.
WVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. A nostril expanding device comprising with a button and then downwardly in the form of a loop and then upwardly at each end and provided with a terminal button, the inner button at each side being provided with an outer pad and the outer button at each side with an inner pad as and for the purpose specified.
