W. A. SHARP OF'TAMA CITY, IOWA.
Letters Patent No. 101,5'73, dated April 12, 18,70; antedated April 7,1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN IMPLEMENT.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, W. A. SHARP, of Tama City, in the county of Tama and State of Iowa, have invented an Improved Combination Tool; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to combine in one tool under a convenient arrangement, a number of tools, such as are used by house-joiners, several of which are especially adapted for weather-boarding, but including, also, implements useful for other purposes.
The invention comprises the combination in one tool of a siding-hook or gauge, level, plumb, compass, calipers, try-square, bevel, foot-rule, edging-plane, rabbet-plane, screw-driver, tape-measure, and marking-gauge.
Figure 1 represents a front side view of my improved tool.
Figure 2 represents a rear side view.
Figure 3 represents an edge view.
Figure 4 a transverse section; and
Figure 5 a detail.
A represents a block of wood, preferably twelve inches in length, and of any suitable width and thickness, covered with smooth brass, copper, or other plates, the one on the side B being wider than the block, and projecting at the' edge E beyond it.
Both side-plates are provided with scales of inches and fractions thereof, as shown at D D.
The front side is also provided with an inch scale, beginning at E, and marked with figures as high as six. Between the three and six inch marks on this scale a slot, F, is made, and a gauge-plate, G, adjust- Q the points that is required for the parts of the boards exposed to the weather, and placed against the lower edge of the board last nailed on, and the other point pressed into the board near the top, where a nail may be temporarily driven, so as to support the lower edge of the board till secured by a nailing.
At K I have placed a compass in a recess in the stock, and at L a spirit-level, at right angles with the edges, to indicate vertical or plumb lines.
In the end opposite,M represents a tape-measure and reel. f
N is a plane-iron secured in a suitable seat at the edge overlapped by the side-plate B, and secured by a wedge, O, driven laterally.
This plane serves as an edging-plane for narrow stuff, and a rabbit-plane on wider stuff. A 1ng,P, projects-from one side of this plane, iron for tapping with a hammer for driving it in or out.
Q represents a long slot in the front side of the stock; and
'R a narrow one on the opposite side, wherein a marking-gauge, or knife S, works, the shank T of which is provided with a spiral spring arranged to keep the point above the surface of the lower side of the stock, when not required for use; it is forced down when being used. I
This gauge is designed for marking the siding for cutting off for fitting the ends to the corner boards,
window-flames, gables, 850., and the gauge-plates U and V are provided for use in connection with it.
The plate U is provided with a proj ection, W, which, in connection with the gauge-plate V, serves, by being placed against the edge of the corner board, or window-frame, or gable-end boards, to hold thestock at the proper point across the piece of siding for the mark to be made by the marker S, coincident with the edge ofthe boards, by which mark the boards may be cut to fit.
For marking off the boards for any required bevel,
or to mark for sawing miters, the gauge U alone is used. The straight part X being placed against the edge of the board, a hole, as, is provided for removing the knife-for sharpening. The head of the shank screws oil for this purpose.
Y represents a tongue, pivoted at Z, between one of the side-plates and the block, and arranged to shut in between the same, and to be opened outward for use as a bevel. It may, also, be drawn out perpendicular to the stock, and then shoved back, the end being slotted (as shown in dotted lines) so as to be held between the rivet and end-plate of the stock, rigidly, for use as a try square.
A represents a screw-driver with a projecting head, B, and provided with a scale, 0. This is arranged to slide in and out of a recess at one end of the stock, and serves, also, for use as calipers.
D representsthe spirit-level in the edge, whereby the stock may be used as an ordinary level.
It will be seen that any one of these several instrnments-may be made use of without being interfered with by the others.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combined tool consisting essentially of the spirit-level L, try-square, bevel, siding-gauge S T, footrule D, plane N, and marking-gauges, all arranged upon the stock A, substantially at herein shown and described.
